In the 1870 Federal Census, R. Remington (female age 74) is living at Tinmouth, Rutland Co., VT, with Ezekiel & Filena Hill and their daughter Laura. I am assuming that Filena is Rebecca's daughter.

Pat Boyden's Remington genealogy says Rebecca died 27 Nov 1888. I have not verified her date of death.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Rufus & Pruda are living at Wallingford, Rutland, VT, with their four children. They are near Rufus Sr., Amos, & John J. B. Remington and their families.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Amos & Phebe E. Remington are living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, with their two daughters Phebe E. 3 & Rebecca 4 months.

In 1860, 1870, and 1880 the family is at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. In 1870 and 1880 they are next to John & Susanna; John is Amos's presumed uncle. This needs more research ro confirm.

In the Federal Census of 1910, Amos Remington, aged 93 wd, is living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY, with Charles & Julia (Judah) R. Cole and their adopted son.

His middle initial is not given in any of the censuses, but is in the gravestone transcription.

The intersection of NY Rts. 3 & 812 in Diana, Lewis Co., NY, is called "Remington Corners."

Pat Boyden's Remington genealogy says David died in 1829 and his gravesite is in the Hill-Roberts Cemetery, Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT. This needs more research.

According to notes from Norman Charles Hill, David died from burns suffered in a fatal fire.

According to a genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, this is John Julius Remington, b.30 Nov 1822 at Wallingford, VT. This differs slightly from his age of 25 in the 1850 census, which suggests he was born c1825. However, he is listed a second time in the 1850 census, and that time his age is 28.

In the 1850 Federal Census, John J. B. Remington and his wife Laura are living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, with their son Passo, 7 months old. Also in the household is John's sister, Sylvia, age 18. They are living nearby other family members, such as Rufus, Amos, and their parents Rufus, Sr., & Rebecca.

In 1850, John & Laura Remington are listed a second time in Wallingford: John age 28, Laura age 28, and John 6 months. On this census page they are living near two Edgerton families, probably relatives of Laura. Nearby are Rufus & Rebecca, and Amos and family.

In 1860 they are still at Wallingford. John J. & Laura E. Remington are ages 36 & 38, and have two sons: Julius K, 10, and Oscar E., 4. They are next to Rufus & Rebecca Remington, ages 65 & 63.

John & Laura are at Wallingford in 1870 with their two sons.

In 1880 John B. & Laura Remington are both age 58, still living at Wallingford, VT. In the household is John's mother, Rebecca, age 84, and a daughter-in-law, Ellen Remington, 20 (Oscar's widow).

In 1900 Julius J. Remington is age 74 and still living at Wallingford, VT. He is a widower, and a stone mason.

John married Laura E. Edgerton 20 Mar 1850, Union Church, South Wallingford, VT. Laura (daughter of Jonathan Edgerton and Phoebe Sayles) was born 17 May 1821, Lincoln, VT; died 14 Oct 1895. [Group Sheet]

During the Civil War, Edmond was a Sergeant in Company B 27th Regiment, Michigan (infantry), serving under Col. Wait in Capt. Nelson Truckey's Company. When he enlisted as a volunteer in 1862, Edmond was age 38 and a farmer; it was for a three-year enlistment. After being wounded on 3 June 1864 and discharged at VA on 3 March 1865, Edmond returned home to MI and later went to SD with his second wife, Hannah. On 30 Oct 1875, Edmond made a signed and sworn statement concerning his military service, in connection with his pension application. An accompanying form says he lives about 4 miles northwest from Elk Point, Union Co., SD.

When Edmond died in 1882, he was drawing a military pension of $8 per month.

In a deposition which was part of the pension process for Edmond's widow, Hannah, Oliver D. Bishop stated that he became acquainted with Edmond & Jemima at the village of C___ City of Marquette, MI. In the summer of 1859 Edmond & Jemimah moved to the township of Chocolay. In the fall of 1860 Jemima M. Remington became sick and continued to become more feeble. She died 29 Mar 1861; Oliver was at her funeral and burial. Less than four months later, Edmond married his second wife, Hannah Welch, at Oliver Bishop's home. (statement signed by Oliver D. Bishop and dated 13 or 14 Aug 1894 Minneapolis, MN)

In another deposition, dated 4 Feb 1897, Warren Fisk, farmer of Elk Point, Union Co,m SD, stated that he knew Edmond (Edward) Remington well. "When we came out here we both located on the prairie about a mile apart and were just as intimate as neighbors could be. He bought meat in my shop the night before he killed himself with strychnine, in the summer of 1883. When he died he had about 110 acres of land, 1/4 mile from the Wisconsin ]Missouri ?] River, just south of this town [Elk Point]. The widow Hannah never has derived an income from the land . . . she went to Oklahoma to live and now her son Thomas works the place but pays her nothing. About 30 acres is under cultivation. She is a good, honest, industrious woman."

The notes in the following two paragraphs are from a descendant, Shirley Herbert: "His military records state he was born in Wallingford . . . , but with no reference to his mother or father . . . He married Jemima and was one of the first settlers in Marquette . . . Edward's wife died and he and his son-in-law, Jerome, enlisted in the 27th Michigan. They saw many battles and they were both injured. Upon returning home, Edward married again, a Hannah Welsh; had more children, and moved his family to Elk Point, SD . . . where he died [in 1882] . . .

"Edmund enlisted on August 15, 1862. He signed the volunteer enlistment papers as Edmond R. Remington. The Certificate of Disability for Discharge states: '. . . and find him incapable of performing duties of a soldier because of gunshot wound of left leg by minnie ball received June 3rd, 1864 at Battle of Bethesda Church. Injured thru tibia and fractured fibula causing lameness to a degree that incapacitates him for service in the field or Veteran Reserve Corps. Disability 3/4." s/ Wm Ingalls, Surgeon.' Edmond was discharged the 3rd of March, 1865 at camp [in VA]. He and his son-in-law, had been in a military hospital for almost a year."

Research notes from Norman Charles Hill state that Edward R. Remington, s/o Rufus & Rebecca, married Margaret and was in Cherry Creek, MI, in 1862. (My note -- perhaps Jemima's middle name was Margaret?)

Note from Shirley Herbert: Cherry Creek is in Marquette Township, just outside the City of Marquette. Edmond's son-in-law, Jerome N. White, had a house there, so maybe Edmond did too.

My notes:

Edmond's military papers describe him as 5'9" (or 5'6"), weighing about 150 - 156 lbs., having blue eyes and dark hair, and either dark or fair complected (depending on the particular year; two say dark and one says fair).

I am not absolutely sure that Edmond belongs in this family group. However, a descendant, Mary Currie, has posted data at Rootsweb showing that he may belong here. This is reasonably supported by his place of birth, estimated year of birth, birthplaces of parents, and naming a son Julius, as shown in census data noted below. The 1820 Federal Census lists Rufus Remington at Wallingford, VT; also there are Jonathan, Joseph, Jesse, & John Remington.

In the 1850 Federal Census, "Edward" & Jemima are living at Marquette, Marquette Co., MI. Their daughter "Adalade" is age 5. Also in the household are Abner & Milton Mitchell, ages 24 & 22 WI, laborers.

In 1860 he is Edmund R. Remington, age 35 VT, living with his family at Chocolay, Marquette Co., MI. Jemima M. is 39 VT, and the children are as follows: Adelaide L. 14 VT, Albert 3 MI, & Julius 1 MI.

Historical documents in the Marquette County Historical Society list the names of the individuals who organized the new township of Chocolay on 10 Feb 1860. E. R. Remington is one of the founders. He is also listed as Moderator and Highway Commissioner.

In 1870 he is Edmond Remington, age 45 VT, still living at Chocolay, MI. He has a wife named Hannah, age 34, b Ireland. They have four children in the home: Albert 14, Julius 11, Thomas 8, & Grace 4. I am not sure whether the two youngest children belong to the first wife or the second; however, see note below on Thomas, which suggests that Thomas & Grace may belong to Hannah.

In the 1880 Federal Census, he appears to be the Edward R. Remington, age 55, mining for gold, living at Upper Sand Creek Gulch, Laramie, WY. It says his parents were born VT/RI. His son Thomas, age 17, is with him; the census says Thomas's mother was born in Scotland. Undoubtedly this is the same family as the above.

Also in 1880, Edmond's wife Hannah and daughter Grace are living in Civil Bend, Union, Dakota Territory. Edmund's name is listed on the last census sheet for the town.

"As one enters Marquette, Mich., along U.S. Route 41, there is a monument with the following inscription to the Civil War veterans from Michigan's Upper Peninsula: 'Ever in the realms of glory, Shall shine your starry all...fame; Angels have heard your story, God knows your names.'

"The angels may know the stories of all the Marquette veterans of the 27th Michigan, or Lake Superior Regiment, but I only know about two of them, who were my ancestors. Jerome White was a 21-year-old farmer when he signed up with his 38-year-old father-in-law, Edmond Remington, in August 1862. Jerome was born in Peru in Clinton County, N.Y., and Ed was born in Wallingford, Vt.

"The news of the attack on Fort Sumter, which had started the Civil War 18 months earlier, reached Jerome, Ed and the other residents of Marquette 'by the overland mail, the dog mail that came up from Green Bay, but the first authentic news was brought a little later when the first boats came in,' a history of the period records.

" 'Five steamers arrived in Marquette together. Then there was excitement. Business was practically suspended. Banks did nothing, storekeepers did nothing. Everybody talked of war and was anxious to have it prosecuted to the most vigorous extent. Political parties made no difference. Everybody was filled with patriotism.'

"It took two years and more than 1,000 miles for Jerome White and Edmond Remington to go from the wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula to the Wilderness battlefield of Virginia..."

In the 1850 Federal Census, Sylvia Remington is age 18 and living with her older brother John and his wife Laura and their son Passo, age 7 months. They are at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, near their parents Rufus & Rebecca, as well as other family members.

In 1860 she is Sylvia A. Brockway, age 28 NY, living at Weston, Windsor Co., VT. She is a housekeeper in the home of William Foster. she has two daughters: Rebecca J. 3, & Laura E. 1. Also in the household is Martin Rose, 18, a farm laborer.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Sylvia A. Sprague, age 49, is a sister-in-law living with Ezekiel & Philena Hill at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT.

Notes sent to me by Norman Charles Hill place this Jonathan as a son of Rufus Remington. I also have wondered if Jonathan might be a son of Jonathan b 1801 or of John b 1794, both sons of Jonathan & Martha (Sprague) Remington, as was Rufus.

Information from Mary Lou Rafery placed this Jonathan as a son of John Remington b 1801 and Unknown Wife. Jonathan's birthplace is NY in two of the censuses, but VT in two others. Jonathan's presumed father, Rufus, was living in NY in 1830, but back in VT by 1840, where there is a Jonathan Remington living next to him. However, Jonathan's age in that census does not agree with his age here. (This family needs more research.)

He is probably the Jonathan Remington, age 20 VT, in the 1850 census at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT. He is a carpenter, and is listed twice in the census; all were born in VT. Nearby are Octavia Remington 22 VT and Prudence Remington 18 VT (could they be daughters of Truman?). All three are living in different households. How are they related? Was Jonathan born in NY but returned to his parents' former hometown to be a carpenter's apprentice?

In the Federal Census of 1860, Jonathan & Sophia, ages 40 VT & 35 VT, are living at Wallingford, VT. He is a carpenter and joiner. Son Frank is 6 months.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Jno & S. E. Remington, ages 41 NY & 42 VT, are living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. Son Frank is 10 NY. According to census data, Jonathan and Frank were born in NY.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Jonathan & Sophia Remington are ages 51 NY & 52 VT, living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. Their son Frank, age 20, is with them.

Two of the censuses give Jonathan's birthplace as NY, two as VT.

Last Rites Conducted For Mrs Cole, Aged 94

Harrisville- Funeral services were held for Mrs Judith Cole, 94, Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev N James Polney, pastor, officiating. Mrs Cole, one of the oldest residents of this vicinity, had made her home here for the past 70 years.

She died Wednesday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs Raymond Cring where she resided.

Mrs Cole was born Dec 24, 1849, in Burlington, Vt, daughter of Amos and Phoebe Remington. She married George Reader who died 53 years ago. She later married Charles Cole, who died nine years ago.

Survivors are an adopted daughter, Mrs Julius Miller, Carthage, NY; a foster son, Henry Reader, whom Mrs Cole had brought up since he was four years old; four nephews, Arthur and Clarence LaParr, Harrisville and Lee and Fred LaParr, Watertown.

Burial was made in Harrisville cemetery.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Julius is 6 months old, living at Wallingford, VT, with his parents John & Laura Remington.

His name appears variously in the census records as Julius K., J.T., and John T. He was probably named after his father, John Julius Remington (who arrears in census records as John J.B., John B., & Julius J.).

I am making an assumption that he is the J.T. Remington who married Kate A. Kelsey on 30 September, year unknown. His age and location of residence agrees with the family information.

In May 1880 Julius T. Remington became a partner in the purchase and establishment of the Pioneer Pulp Mill in Wallingford, VT. Later that year the partnership was dissolved.

In 1880, this couple are living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT. In 1900 and 1910 they are at Bennington, Bennington Co., VT.

According to Pat Boyden's genealogy, John's name is John Tasso Remington, and he was born 22 Dec 1849 at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT.

The 1900 census data says he was born in Dec 1849. This agrees with the 1850 census data.

I found an online newspaper image which has a brief entry about this individual, although it calls him T. J. Remington of Bennington, VT. From The Evening News, Ada, OK, 16 & 20 Feb 1904: "T. J. Remington of Bennington, VT, is the owner of a handkerchief which his greatuncle, Jerameel Doty, carried when the latter was a soldier in the revolution and later in the the war of 1812. It was used at one time by the soldier to bind up his own wounds." According to my data Jorathmiel Doty was his great-grandfather, although I do not have proof of this.

(?In 1850 his name appears to be "Passo." One genealogy has his name as Tasso.)

In the Federal Census of 1900, Albert & Ida are living at Chassell, Houghton, MI. They have nine children in the household: Henry 19, Louise 17, Emma 15, Arthur 15, Addie 12, Willie 10, Pearl 6, Belle 4, & Earl H. about 1 month old.

Information from Mary Currie: He died March 11, 1901 in an accident. He was hauling logs and a whiffle tree* broke and struck him in the chest just below the heart, killing him instantly. He worked for the Sturgeon River Lumber Company at Chassell, MI.

According to his death certificate, Albert died at age 44 y 8 mo 10 d.

Albert's funeral service was held at the Congregational Church in Chassell, MI.

An entry at Familysearch.org has Albert's middle initial as H.

The 1900 Federal Census gives Julius's date of birth as Feb 1862, but that must be incorrect, because in the 1860 Federal Census, Julius is already age 1, living with his parents at Chocolay, MI. It is possible that he died and another son was born and given the same name. However, since his wife was born in 1855 and they were married c1879 (oldest daughter born 1880), it seems more likely that he was actually born 1858-1859, and is the same individual listed in the 1860 census.

In 1900, the family is living on North Fifth Street, Ward 5, Marquette, Marquette Co., MI: Julius 38, Anna 40, William 15, Lillie 11, Jesse 8, & Virginia 5. A boarder is also in the household -- Arthur Lemieux, age 8.

In the Federal Census of 1910, Julius Remington is a widower age 52, boarding at Marquette, Marquette Co., MI. At least three of his children are living at Chocolay, MI.

In 1930, Julius Remington is an inmate at the Marquette County Infirmery.

His middle name as Edwin came from Familysearch.org (IGI). This site also shows his birthplace as Newberry, Luce Co., MI.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Thomas and his wife (Alice?) are living at Dixon, Blaine Co., OK Territory. According to the census data, they have been married 14 years, and Thomas's wife has had 8 children, 4 of whom are still living. Thomas is a farmer. They have four children in the household: Carver (?) P. 12, Harry M. 10, Rensi (or Renie) 8, & Glenn 6. At this time Thomas's mother, Hannah Remington, is living at Logan, Blaine Co., OK.

In the 1910 Federal Census, Thomas Remington is age 47, a widower, occupation -- engineer/running engine, living on Main Street at Watonga, Blaine Co., OK. With him are three of their children: Harry E. 20, Rena 18, & Glen N. 16. Also there is Thomas's niece, Hannah Irion, age 13. Thomas's mother, Hannah, died in January of 1910.

In 1920 Thomas is age 58, an engineer at an oil field, still living at Watonga, OK. He has remarried to Maud, 40 KS. With them is daughter Rena, 27 SD.

In 1930 Thomas is age 68, a widower again, still at Watonga, OK.

Thomas married Addie Belle Rozelle Abt 1886. Addie was born Jan 1864, Iowa; died Between Jun 1900 and Apr 1910. [Group Sheet]

In 1880, Grace Remington is age 14, living with her mother Hannah in Dakota Territory.

In the 1900 Federal Census, she is undoubtedly Grace Irion, age 34 and married, living at Logan, Blaine Co., OK, the same town where her mother is living. Grace's birthplace is given as MI, and her parents' birthplaces are given as VT/Scotland. Her husband is Frank, age 41 OH, and they have been married 16 years. Children in the household are: May 15, Robert A. 13, Ella B. 10, Ralph 8, Roy 6, Hannah 3, & Addie 10/12. The first four were born in SD, while the three youngest were born in OK.

Grace married Frank Irion Abt 1884. Frank was born May 1859, OH; died Aft 1 Jun 1900. [Group Sheet]

In the Federal Census of 1920, Frank E. & Nettie C. Remington are living at Pierrepont, Saint Lawrence Co., NY. Son Charles L. age 23 is still with them.

"Frank Remington died in an accident at the Newton Falls mill. Apparently he was caught in the machinery and was torn and bruised enough that he died 10 minutes after they found him. He died November 18 1924. Services at the Methodist Church Nov 20. Burial in Harrisville Cemetery. Frank was the only son of Jonathan and Sophia Remington. He was born in Vermont in 1862 and came to Diana when he was 7 yrs. old. He married Nettie Shipman in 1883, had two sons, Arthur and Charles. All three survive him. Two cousins also mourn his death. He had moved to Newton Falls about 7 yrs. ago." (dated Thursday Jan 8 1925)

According to the family genealogy data, Henry's first wife was "Abenna Patient." However, in the 1910 census, her name is given as Josephine age 22 MI, both parents b Canada.

In the Federal Census of 1910, Henry & Josephine, ages 29 & 22, are living at Chassell Twp, Houghton Co., MI. They have two young children, Irene & Earl.

In the 1920 census, Henry is a widower, again living at Chassell, Houghton Co., MI. He has five children in the household; the youngest, Celia, was born in Florida.

In the 1920 census he also appears to be the Francis Remington, age 38 MI widower, living at Bergland, Ontonagon, MI, working for a the Worcester Logging Company, along with his brother Arthur. A William Remington is also there, but he may or may not be their brother, William.

In 1930, Henry is with his second wife Anna, and they are living at Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., WI. Earl and Lenora are with them.

In the Federal Census of 1920, Arthur & Iva Remington, ages 34 & 27, are living at Bergland, Ontonagon Co., MI. They have a young son, Harry A., almost 5. Arthur is working as a cook for the Worcester Logging Co. Also there are Francis Remington (widowed) 38 & William Remington (single) 27. Francis is Arthur's brother Henry Francis; William may be their brother also, although his age is off a couple of years.

In 1930, the family is still at Bergland, MI. Arthur is a brakeman on a steam railroad.

According to his obituary, Wesley was a member of the Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church. He worked as a machinist at American Motors for 42 years.

In the 1910 Federal Census, William is age 25. He and sister Virginia, 14, are living at Hancock, Houghton Co., MI, with Fred & Cora Irene Beall and their three children. The census says they are brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Cora is really their half-sister. Census data says William is married and has been married for 3 years, but no wife is listed. (A family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect says William married Rose Guhlke in 1906 at Marquette, MI.)

In the 1920 census there is a William E. Remington age 34 MI living in WI, but I do not know if it is the same individual. In the 1930 census there is a William Remington at Marquette, MI, but still the age is off, so I do not know if it is the same William.

In the 1910 Federal Census, Lily is age 20, living at Chocolay, Marquette Co., MI, with married half-sister Eva King and her husband Clinton. Also there is brother Jesse, age 18.

In the Federal Census of 1920, Jess is age 28, still living with his half-sister Eva and brother-in-law Clinton H. King at Chocolay, Marquette Co., MI. Jess and Clinton are both farm workers.

In the 1910 Federal Census, Virginia is age 14. She and brother William, 25, are living at Hancock, Houghton Co., MI, with Fred & Cora Irene Beall and their three children. The census says they are brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Cora is really their half-sister, from their mother's first marriage.

He probably is the Carver Remington, age 25 SD, a lodger living in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA, in 1910.

In the 1920 Federal Census, Cravor T. Remington is age 32 NE, living at Chicago, Cook Co., IL. According to the census data, his parents were born MI/IN.

In 1930 Carver T. Remington is age 42 SD, living at Proviso, Cook Co., IL. His wife is Catherine, age 35. In the household is a stepson, Otto J., 9; and a daughter, Virginia A., age 4 10/12 (both b IL, but parents born in diff. states).

His name appears to be Carver P. in the 1900 census. In 1920 it is written as Cravor T.

Carver married Catherine Unknown Bef 1925. Catherine was born Abt 1895, IL; died Aft Apr 1930. [Group Sheet]

In the 1920 Federal Census, Harry Remington is age 30 SD, living at 505 Sioux Street, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA. He is married to Grace, age 32 SD. He has three children and four stepchildren in the household. Judging from the ages of the children, Harry & Grace probably have been married about 6 years. The three children of Harry & Grace are Harry, Lillian, & Ruby (all b SD).

In 1930, Harry & Grace, ages 40 & 42, are still living at Sioux City, IA. They have five children: Harry 15, Lillian 14, Ruby 12, Marvin 2 6/12, & Jeannie 1 8/12 (difficult to read). According to the census data, all were born in SD except the three youngest, who were born in IA.

Harry married Grace Hannah Cooper Abt 1914. Grace was born Abt 1888, SD; died Aft 1 Apr 1930. [Group Sheet]
