Stephen Northup, Jr.

Notes:

According to the Northup-Hazard Family Bible, Stephen died at age 77. (see RI Roots magazine, Vol. 32. No. 4, Dec 2006)

Stephen's will mentions his wife Mary, and the following children: Thomas, Henry, Nicholas, Abigail (Watson), Mary (Watson), Mercy (Allen), & Patience (Hazard). If there were other children, they must have died before his will was written. For instance, some genealogies list a son Stephen, the oldest, in this family group.

The will also mentions some grandchildren, including three with the surname Card. So, either there was another daughter who had already died, or else one of the three daughters was previously married to a Mr. Card.

Stephen married Mary Thomas 11 Jul 1684, North Kingstown, RI. Mary was born Abt 19 May 1666; died 26 Dec 1754, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Stephen is not mentioned in his father's will, but is listed as a son in some genealogies. I am making an assumption that the Stephen & Damaris Northup, parents of Mary who married Ebenezer Slocum at Jamestown in 1738, are in fact this couple (needs more research to confirm).

One genealogy has Stephen's dates as: 1684 Ja. - 18 Mar 1714/15. However, if that is correct, this Stephen could not be Mary's father -- unless she was born earlier than I estimate.

I have estimated Thomas's year of birth.

I have also made an assumption that the birth record of "Sarah, daughter of Thomas & Catherine" refers to this particular Thomas Northup (needs more research to confirm). Thus, I have included Catherine as his wife, and Sarah as his daughter.

Thomas married Catherine Unknown Abt 1712. Catherine was born Abt 1690. [Group Sheet]

I have estimated Henry's year of birth.

On 13 April 1741, a Henry Northup of North Kingstown petitioned the Town Council of South Kingstown concerning the administration of the estate of Phillis Smith, deceased, mother of Hopestill (Smith) Northup. In the records of the Exeter Town Council of 9 October 1759, Hopestill is referred to as the widow of Henry Northup late of North Kingstown deceased. This suggests that Hopestill, widow of Joseph Northup, married either her brother-in-law Henry after his first wife died, or her deceased husband's nephew, and that Hopestill was widowed a second time before 9 October 1759. I have made an assumption that Hopestill married this particular Henry Northup, b.c. 1688.

I have not been able to find out names of any children Henry & Hopestill may have had together.

Was Henry married before he married Hopestill? One genealogy has a Henry Northup of this time frame marrying a Mary Eldred.

The will of Nicholas Northup of North Kingstown mentions his (probably third) wife Sarah, four unnamed daughters, and the following sons: William, Thomas, Gideon, Nicholas, and Rouse. I do not know which children were born of which wife.

Some genealogies have his first wife as Abigail Slocum or Abigail Eldred. I have not been able to confirm this, but have included her with some estimated dates, pending further research. If Nicholas was in fact married before he married Freelove, some of the children -- particularly Thomas -- may have been of this first marriage.

Mary married Ebenezer Slocum 8 Jun 1738, Jamestown, RI. Ebenezer (son of Samuel Slocum and Hannah Carr) was born 24 Aug 1719. [Group Sheet]

I am not sure whether Thomas was a son of Feelove, or of a previous wife. I have estimated his year of birth.

Thomas — Susannah Congdon. Susannah was born 7 Feb 1719/20. [Group Sheet]

Nicholas Northup, Esq., of North Kingstown, died in his 81st year.

I have made an assumption that both of these marriages are for this particular "Nicholas, son of Nicholas."

Nicholas Northup, Jr., witnessed a North Kingstown will around the year 1766. Nicholas & Hannah Northup witnessed the will of Hannah Allen, dated 12 Dec 1805, North Kingstown. Possibly she was Hannah Northup's mother (?).

Nicholas married Ann Slocum Abt 1745. Ann was born Abt 1725; died Bef 1750. [Group Sheet]

Eunice's year of birth does not appear in the records, so I have roughly estimated it.

The church records say he died 30 Sept 1814, but the year seems to be one off.

He and his wife, Avis, and his brother Rouse (Rowse) were all baptized on the same day.

Six of these children appear in the North Kingstown records as "of Gideon and (?)," years of birth unreadable. I am assuming they are children of this couple, although that may not be correct. Sylvester is not listed, so I don't think he is a biological child of this couple, although one genealogy puts him in this family group. Perhaps he was orphaned young and raised by this couple (needs more research).

Gideon married Avis Slocum 26 Sep 1751, Jamestown, RI. Avis (daughter of Samuel Slocum and Anne Gould) was born 14 May 1734; died 22 May 1814. [Group Sheet]

Rouse's year of birth does not appear in the records, so I have roughly estimated it. He and his brother Gideon were baptized on the same day.

Rouse Northup witnessed the 16 Jan 1775 will of Samuel Slocum of Jamestown.

William & Ann had 12 children, including a set of twins. They migrated to Onieda Co., NY, sometime around 1800.

I would like to find out where the name Remington (for one of their sons) comes from.

The birth record for Remington Northup says he was a son of Nicholas & Ann (Slocum) Northup. Was this a clerk's error? I have a marriage for another Ann Slocum to Nicholas, William's older brother; but supposedly she died defore Remington would have been born. This puzzling entry needs more research.

William was a Drum Major in the RI troops in the Revolutionary War. His gravestone is inscribed "A hero of the Revolution."

Daniel, whose birth and death are recorded at North Kingstown, may or may not be a son in this family group. Unfortunately, some of the pages are burned, and the year is not legible.

Anne married Nicholas Carr Northup 12 Dec 1785. Nicholas (son of Carr Northup and Sarah Clarke) was born 25 Mar 1767, North Kingstown, RI; died 17 Dec 1825, North Kingstown, RI; was buried , Elm Grove Cemetery, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

I am making an assumption that this is Rev. William Northup, who died 31 May 1839, according to the North Kingstown church records in James N. Arnold's Vital Record of RI.

The birth record for Remington Northup says he was a son of Nicholas & Ann (Slocum) Northup. Was this a clerk's error? I have a marriage for another Ann Slocum to Nicholas, William's older brother; but supposedly she died defore Remington would have been born. This puzzling entry needs more research.

At the present time I am assuming that Remington was indeed a son of William & Ann. He went to Oneida, NY, as they did. Also, he named a son William.

Remington married Amy Knowles Abt 1791. Amy was born Abt 1769. [Group Sheet]
