  1. 1.  Cyrus Waterman Remington was born 1839, Coventry, RI; died 10 Mar 1926, Providence, RI; was buried 13 Mar 1926, Pocasett Cemetery, Dyer Ave., Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

    Cyrus W. Remington was a Civil War Veteran. He was a Private in the 3rd Regiment, RI Heavy Artillery, Batallion C; Date of Muster 5 Oct 1861; residence Coventry, RI. He re-enlisted 20 Jan 1864 as an Articifer; mustered out of service 9 June 1865; rank at discharge was ARTF (Artificer).

    Cyrus's ancestry has not been proven. For the time being I have made an assumption that Cyrus is a son of Sheffield, because he is living near him in West Greenwich, RI, in the 1850 Federal Census (needs more research to confirm). An additional clue is that Christopher (son of Sheffield, thus his assumed brother) named a son Cyrus. I am not sure of the parentage of Sheffield, his (assumed) father -- see notes.

    The Ancestry CD says his next of kin at death were George & Mary A. Remington (not sure who they are). It says the same for Christopher, and I know his parents are Sheffield & Huldah, at least, according to the marriage record at Newport.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Cyrus W. Remington is age 10, living in West Greenwich, RI, with the family of Burrill Matteson (age 31). Burrill is the first cousin of Patience (Matteson) Remington. Sheffield Remington is living nearby with a Whitford family. In 1860 Cyrus is still at West Greenwich, age 19, a laborer in a mill; he is living at a boarding house kept by Jason & Betsey Hazard. In the 1870 Census, Cyrus W. Remington is age 30, married to Susan J., age 20, and living in North Providence, RI. They have two young daughters, Ann E. & Mary J. In 1880 Cyrus & Susan Jane are living at Cranston, RI; their children are Mary Jane, Henry R., Levi W., & Elvira P.; the oldest daughter Ann is apparently living with her grandparents, William & Mary Diamond.

    In the 1885 RI State Census, Cyrus W. and his brother Christopher H. are both living in Johnston; both are carpenters and their birthplace is given as Coventry.

    According to the cemetery record, his middle name is Waterman. His son Levi's middle name is Waterman, also.

    The death record says he died at 27 Laban St., Providence, RI.

    In the 1880 Federal Census, Ann Remington is age 13, living at Johnston, RI, with her maternal grandparents William & Mary Diamond.

    Annie E. Remington died at age 19. Apparently she was buried in the Manton area, and later reinterred at Pocasset Cemetery at the same time as her brother James, on 22 January 1913.

    In 1920 the family is in Providence as follows: Henry Remington 45, Lena 44, Harold 24, Carol 20, and Beatrice 15.

    In 1930 the family is in Providence as follows: Henry R. Remington 57, Lena 55, Beatrice 24, Malinda 34 dtr-in-law, Frances 12 gr-dtr, and Clarence W. 6 gr-son, all born RI.

    James died at the age of one year and four months. The RI Death Index identifies him as a son of Cyrus & Susan. However, the date there is 21 July 1887.

    According to the cemetery records at Pocassett, James was first buried in North Providence, but reinterred at Pocasset on 22 Jan 1913, along with his sister, Annie.

He then had a 40 year career with the Narragansett Electric Company. He was a communicant of St. Thomas More Church in Narragansett. 'Gramp' enjoyed a full and joyous life including summers at the beach with his family, attending countless sporting events for his grandchildren, and winters in Florida with his wonderful friends and family. His presence was a joy to all he knew and he will be truly missed."

    Mary Elizabeth (Remington) Little, 91, of Ravenswood Avenue, Providence passed away peacefully on Friday, January 4, 2019. She was the wife of the late LTC Walter E. Little.

    Born December 28, 1927 in Providence RI, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Anna Remington.

    She leaves her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Marion Little of Wakefield; daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Arthur Bert. M.D. of Fernandina Beach, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, James and Margaret Little of Hebron, CT; son and daughter-in-law, David Little and Darsie Alexander of Katonah, NY. She was Baka and Grammy to her seven living grandchildren, Callery (Fr. Ambrose), Dan, Meg, Sam, Katelyn, Sophie and Nina. One special grandchild, Jeffery Little, predeceased and has been patiently waiting for her.

    Mary was the quintessential wife of an Infantry Officer. She was smart, resilient, gentle, kind… and tough. She chose to leave the comfortable confines of Rhode Island to follow her love, Walter, around the globe. Married in 1950, they spent the first three years of their life in Salzburg, Austria.

    For the next two decades, she would live in New Mexico, Georgia, South Carolina, Okinawa, New York City (Governors Island), Maryland, and Stuttgart, Germany. To be married to a Special Forces Officer takes a special woman. One who can raise her family while her husband serves the country on long and often dangerous assignment. She was every bit as strong – and fierce - as her warrior husband.

    Mary was the solid foundation of the family. She was a superb baker, cook, and seamstress. As she travelled from base to base, she kept her family safe and comfortable. Her Catholic faith was essential to everyday existence. A surprising number of Army Chaplains wore camouflage vestments in war zones custom made for them by Mary Little.

    Mary and Walter returned to Providence for good in 1970 so they could give their children the stability and family love so necessary to success. Important to that stability was the life-long connections made with numerous Remington aunts and uncles, Gene and Mary, Andy and Anita, Frank and Arlene, Jimmy and Beatrice, and numerous, fun cousins.

    A mass of Christian Burial in St Augustine Church, Mt Pleasant Avenue, Providence will be held on Monday, January 7th at 10:00am. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours Monday morning from 8-9:30am in the J F Skeffington Chapel, 925 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence. Burial will be private.

(Rushe) Remington, Sr. He is survived by his three sons, Stephen P. Remington of Warwick, John J. Remington of East Providence and Paul D. Remington of Madison, CT., two brothers, Eugene A. C. Remington, Jr. of Narragansett and Florida and James K. Remington of Providence, a sister, Mary E. Little of Providence, four grandchildren and a great granddaughter. He was the brother of the late Francis E. Remington."
