Notes:

I cannot locate John in any census earlier than 1840.

In the Federal Census of 1840, John Remington is listed at Pitcairn, St. Lawrence Co., NY. The household consists of: 1 male <5, 1 male 10<15, 1 male 15<20, 1 male 40<50, 2 females <5, 1 female 5<10, 2 females 15<20, and 1 female 40<50.

In the 1850 Federal Census, John & Susan Remington, ages 53 & 48, are still living at Pitcairn, Saint Lawrence, NY. With them are: Melissa 10 and Roxy 7.

In the 1860 Federal Census, he appears to be the John Remington age 64 VT, living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. His wife Susana is 59. Nearby are the families of Amos Remington and Nathan Remington who are first cousins to each other. I have made an assumption that he is their uncle, based on his age and place of birth.

In 1870 they are still at Diana, NY, ages 75 & 69.

In 1880, they are probably John & Susan Remington at Diana, NY, ages 90 & 78. His (presumed) brother Jonathan is also in the same town, age 78.

The intersection of NY Rts. 3 & 812 in Diana, Lewis Co., NY, is called "Remington Corners."

The following notes are from Mary Lou Raftery:

"The original member of the Remington family in the Remington Corners area, John, father of Henry Remington, built a log house back of the Cassisy home."

John applied for pension benefits from the War of 1812. The application states that he was born 7 Nov 1790 in Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT. Date of application is 15 Sep 1879; he was 89 yrs old. John listed the locations where he had lived since his discharge from the service on 18 Sep 1814 as follows:
Mt. Holly, VT; 12 yrs; 1814 - 1826 [Rutland Co.]
Champion, Jefferson Co., NY; 6 months; 1826
Denmark, Lewis Co., NY; 8 yrs; 1826 - 1832
Pitcairn, St. Lawrence Co., NY; 14 yrs; 1832 - 1846 [see 1850 census notes above]
Diana, Lewis Co., NY; 32 yrs; 1846 - 1878

In the application John said he was poor and that his children could no longer care for him and his wife, who are now aged and dependent on the town, which allows him and his wife only $1 per person each week.

His physical appearance is described as 5' 2 1/2" tall, blue eyes, dark complexion and black hair.

Among the 36 people who signed the petition are: two Graves individuals, J. Remington, B. Collar, Smith, 3 Carley individuals, Orville Austin, A. Remington, and others.

The petition was denied because they could find no record of John's service.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Lucius and Mary Remington, ages 27 & 19, are living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. They have a daughter Philinda, 1. Also with them is Sedate Remington, 15, sister of Lucius. They are living near other Remington family members.

In the 1861 Census of Canada, Lucius Remington is age 34 VT, living at Harwich, Kent, Ontario. His name is written as Lucuss. With him are his wife Mary 30 NY, and the following children: Philinda 11 WC, Charles 6 WC, & Angeline 1 WC. Religion is Methodist.

In the 1871 Census of Canada, the Remington family is still at Harwich: Lusius 49 United States, Mary E. 33 United States, Charles 14 United States, John 6 Ontario, & Gertrude 4 Ontario. Religion is Episcopal Methodist.

In the 1881 Census of Canada, the family is still at Harwich: Lucius 59 Vermont, Mary 52 New York, Charles 26 New York, John 16 Ontario, & Malissa 14 Ontario. Their religion is still given as Methodist.

In the 1901 Census of Canada, Lucious & Mary E. Remington, ages 82 & 73, are at Ridgetown, Elgin, Ontario. This gives his dob as 27 Jan 1819; Mary's dob 15 May 1827.

Lucius married Mary E. Unknown Abt 1848. Mary was born 15 May 1827, NY; died Aft 31 Mar 1901. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Her name is sometimes spelled Rozzella, Rozila, or Rosella. The gravestone transcription spells it Rozila.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Rosella Fisher is age 44 VT, living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. In the household are the following, all surname Kring: Chas 16, Chester 12, Lewis 10, Adelbert 7, Ida 1, & Lucinda 18.

In the Federal Census of 1880, she is Rosella Kring 54 VT. With her are: Chester 22 NY (NY/VT), Edelbert 17 NY (NY/VT) & Ida 11 NY (Ireland/VT).

Rozila — Solomon Kring. Solomon was born 17 Jul 1811, Stone Arabia, Montgomery Co., NY; died 10 Nov 1865, Harrisville, Lewis Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

Rozila married Unknown Fisher Between 1866 and 1870. Unknown was born , Ireland. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

He may be the Henry Remington in the 1850 and 1860 Federal Censuses at Champion, Jefferson Co., NY. In 1850 he is age 18 NY, a laborer, living with the family of Henry Gear. In 1860 probably the same Henry Remington is still living at Champion, age 31 NY, with a (presumed) wife named Sylvia C. age 22 NY. They are living with Silas & Sarah Ann Chapin, possibly parents of Sylvia. There were several Henry Remingtons in New York State, so it is uncertain which one this is at Champion.

In the Federal Census of 1870, H. and Mandana Remington, ages 38 NY and 42 NY, are living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. They have two daughters, Eliza 2 and Clara 8 months.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Henry and Mendina (?) Remington are ages 47 NY and 52 NY. They are still living at Diana, NY. Eliza is 12 and Clara is 10. They are near Amos and family, who I believe to be his cousin.

In the Federal Census of 1900, Henry and his wife M (?) are still at Diana, NY. Lizzie is with them, age 32.

In the Federal Census of 1910, Henry & Mandana are both 81, still living at Diana, NY. According to census data, they have been married 42 years; Mandana has had three children of whom one is still living.

Henry's gravestone says he was born in 1829, but the 1900 census gives his date of birth as Feb 1831.

According to Mary Lou Raftery, Henry had a first marriage to Dolly Austin b 10 May 1834 NY; and a third marriage was to Cordelia Tyler, on 19 May 1911.

Henry married Mandana Blanchard 17 Mar 1867. Mandana was born Abt Jun 1828, NY; died 4 Jun 1910, NY; was buried , Harrisville Cemetery, Diana, Lewis Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

Henry married Cordelia Tyler 9 May 1911, Antwerp, Jefferson Co., NY. Cordelia was born Abt 1843, Diana, Lewis Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1880, "Pearlette Seely" is age 42 NY (VT/VT), living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. With her are four children: Henry 18, Clara 9, George 6, and Etta 3.

In the Federal Census of 1900, Perleyette Seeley is age 62 NY, living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. With her is George Seeley 25 NY.

Perleyette as a daughter of John & Susanna was found on the GenForum message board, posted by Kathy Cummings on 27 Oct 2001.

Also, the 1895 census at Harrisville, NY, lists Mrs. Perleyette (Remington) Seelye as widow of Hiram Seelye.

A Roxey Remington is listed as living in Harrisville, NY, in the 1895 census. Roxey Remington is also listed in the census as the wife of Hiram Lawrence (in the 1880 census he is divorced).
