In the 1813 Rate Book for Mansfield, p. 21, a Joseph Marshall living at Stockwell Gate paid 1/10 - 1/2 (one shilling ten and a half pence). That reference could pertain to this particular Joseph Marshall, our ancestor.

In the 1841 census, Joseph & Sarah Marshall, their ages given as 60 & 50, are living on Bancroft Lane in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. In the household are Phoebe 30, Elizabeth 25, James 15, Eliza 15, William 9, & Harriett 4. (In the 1841 census ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.) I have made an assumption that all of the children belong to Joseph & Sarah (needs research to confirm).

In the birth/baptismal records of her children, she is identified as either Ann or Anne.

I have estimated James's year of birth; his age is given as 15 in the 1841 census. (In the 1841 census ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.)

I am making an assumption that this family in the 1871 & 1881 British Census belongs to him. The year and place of birth fit; plus, a daughter is named Ellen, and my grandma used to speak of a cousin "Nellie Slack." Elizabeth seems to be the "servant" age 18 who is living with Joseph & Elizabeth Coleman and family in the 1891 census.

In 1871 they are at 1 Union St.; in 1881 they are at 47 Union St., Mansfield.

In 1891 Ann is a widow, still at 47 Union St.

The son John, born c1860, apparently is the one who is married to Mary, and with whom his cousin Florrie Coleman (my great aunt) is living in 1901.

I am making an assumption that John Slack, age 40 in the 1881 census, living at 20 The Lawn, with his wife Charlotte, 32, is the son of Gilbert & Ann Slack. His age seems to be a year or so off, but that may not be unusual. In 1861, the Gilbert Slack family was living at 26 The Lawn, so perhaps John stayed in that area when he married.

In 1891 they are at 8 Club Row, Mansfield. Their daughter, Elizabeth, is age 25. Nearby is John's widowed sister-in-law, Ann, and her three children who are still at home.

In 1901 this couple are ages 61 & 51, living at 90 Nottingham Rd., Mansfield.

In the 1891 census, Sarah Adcock is a widow, age 47, living at 19 Chandlers Ct., Mansfield, near to her sister Elizabeth Coleman and family.

From the GRO index: the only Elizabeth Coleman death in Mansfield 1891 to 1894 was Elizabeth Coleman, aged 46, September 1893, Mansfield, vol 7b page 64.

From the Bristol Mercury, no. 14149, Friday 15 September 1893: "CHOLERA EPIDEMIC. The wife of a fishmonger and fruiterer named COLEMAN living at Mansfield, Notts died of cholera yesterday morning within twenty hours of being attacked. It is not known yet whether the disease was of the Asiatic type. The case has been reported to the Local Government Board." (from Alan Battams)

Elizabeth Coleman was buried on the 15th September 1892 [1893?] in Mansfield Cemetery in Grave No: 5695 in the Traditional Section. Also in the Grave was John Joseph Coleman who was buried on the 13th March 1899, Emily Annie Lack was buried on the 2nd November 1903 and Horace Coleman on the 8th June 1917.

In the 1871 census, John is age 11, living with his family at 1 Union St., Mansfield.

In 1881 John is age 21 and married to Mary, also age 21. They are living at 9 Plantation Row, Mansfield.

In 1891 John & Mary are age 30, living at 28 Union St., Mansfield. With them is Ethel Bostwick, age 6, niece, born Notts.

In 1901 John & Mary are ages 41 & 40. They are living at 1 Caxton Terrace, Mansfield. With them are Ethel Bostock, age 16, niece born Notts; and Florrie Coleman, age 16, born Mansfield, Notts. Both Ethel & Florrie are shop assistants. Florrie is my great-aunt, sister of my Grandma Berry (nee Ellen Coleman).

Elizabeth seems to be the "servant" age 18 who is living with Joseph & Elizabeth Coleman and family in the 1891 census. The Coleman children were her first cousins.

A girl named Ann Coleman died in Mansfield at age 11, between July and Sep 1882; I have made an assumption that is this Ann, sister of my grandmother.

He is likely the John Joseph Coleman whose birth was recorded December 1872 at Mansfield (Ref 7b 78); he died at age 26 (Ref 7b 36).

John married Emily Ann Thrall Abt Dec 1891, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Emily was born Abt 1873, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England; died Abt Dec 1903, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England; was buried 2 Nov 1903, Mansfield Cemetery, Nottinghamshire, England. [Group Sheet]

Eliza came to America in 1894 with sister Ellen and brother Billy.

Eliza was George's second wife, as far as I know.

George and Eliza moved to California, where Eliza died. He moved back to Providence and died here in the 1930s. Ellen Berry, Eliza's sister, took care of the funeral arrangements.

In the 1920 Federal Census, George & Eliza are living at Long Beach, CA. George's father is living with them. The census data says Eliza immigrated in 1894, which agrees with other information we have. They are still there in 1930, although George's father is no longer with them. According to the census, Eliza's first marriage was at age 28.

Notes:

Place of birth / family residence at time of birth: 61 Plantation Street, Mansfield, Nottingham, England. She came to America when she was 17, arriving on 24 Oct 1894, along with sister Eliza and brother William. Her name on the passenger list is "Nellie Coleman."

Ellen died at home with her daughter Edna and family at 87 Darrow Drive, Warwick, RI, USA. According to the funeral booklet, she was age 76 y 6 m 22 d. The funeral was on Thursday, 29 October 1953, from 2 pm to 3:30 pm at the Juhlin-Pearson Funeral Home on Broad Street. The pastor was Joseph G. Bodie. Musical selections played were Nearer My God to Thee, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, My Jesus I Love Thee, Rock of Ages, The City Foursquare, and Jesus Lover of My Soul. Bearers were Pasco Mitola, Wallace Powers, Norman C. Remington, and Richard Remington. Interment was at North Burial Ground, Providence, at 3:45 pm on the 29th.

According to the 1910 census, "Nellie" had 8 children of whom 3 were living at that time. I don't understand that. Did she have children who died in infancy, or were stillborn? It makes more sense if it refers to John's children; 8 born and 3 still living as far as I know. I suppose as she answered the census taker, she was referring to the family head in answering that question.

Her birth was registered as Florry Coleman 4/1884 at Mansfield RD Ref 7b 96; she married William Bowler 4/1941 at Mansfield RD Ref 7b 213.

In the 1901 census, Florrie is age 16, a shop assistant, and is living at 1 Caxton Terrace, Mansfield, with her cousin John Slack and his wife Mary, ages 41 and 40. Also there is a niece, Ethel Bostock, likewise a shop assistant. (In 1891, John & Mary Slack are both age 30 and living at 28 Union St., Mansfield; niece Ethel Bostwick is with them, age 6.) John Slack, Florrie's cousin, must have been born c1860/61.

The 1891 census has her name as Clara (?).
