According to the church record, Gilbert was born on Tuesday, 8th Apr 1777, and baptized on aThursday, 11th July 1777.

(Note from Alan Battams: For all their children christened up to 1817, father Gilbert was a stockinger, mother Elizabeth, of Stockwell Gate. For children after 1817, father Gilbert was a stockinger, mother Elizabeth, of Bancroft Lane.)

In the 1841 census, Gilbert & Elizabeth are living at 10 Bancroft Lane. Also in the household are sons Robert & Samuel, as well as Robert's wife Ann and their five children: George, Robert, Harriet, Edward, & Charles. Nearby, at 11 & 12 Bancroft, are living two other sons, John & Gilbert, and their families.

In 1851, Gilbert is not there but Elizabeth Slack is age 73, still on Bancroft Lane, a pauper/winder.

In the 1813 Rate Book for Mansfield, p. 62, a Gilbert Slack living in Ratcliffe Gate paid 1/10 - 1/2 pence (one shilling ten and a half pence). The reference could refer to this particular Gilbert, our ancestor.

In the 1851 census, William & Ann are living on Bancroft Lane with his mother Elizabeth. They have three children: Harriett, Frederic, and Charles. Several other Slack families are living on the same street.

In the 1851 census, it appears that Ann is a widow age 62, living with her two sons. However, William is also there, age 62, a lodger. Perhaps the census taker was confused.

In the 1841 census, Robert is living with his parents at 10 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield. It appears that five of his children are in the household, along with a possible wife, Ann -- however, further research suggests that Ann is his sister and that one of the children, Charles, is an infant belonging to Ann.

By 1861 he has remarried and has a wife named Eliza, plus four more children. They are living at 38 Club Square, Mansfield.

In the 1841 census, Gilbert & Ann Slack are living at 12 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield. Two of their children are in the household: William & John. Also living on the same street are Gilbert's parents, Gilbert & Elizabeth, and three other brothers and their families.

In the 1851 census, Gilbert & Ann are at 21 Bancroft Lane; they have four children: William 19, John 11, Sarah 7, & Elizabeth 3 (our ancestor -- maternal grandmother of Edna). Gilbert is a cotton stockinger and Ann is a seamer. Living near them are other Slack family members. Next door is Ann's mother Sarah Marshall, two of Ann's sisters, as well as a niece.

In the 1861 census, Gilbert is living at 26 The Lawn, Mansfield. His profession is given as silk stocking maker. His son John, 21, was a cotton stocking maker, while Sarah, 17, was a dressmaker. Elizabeth, at 13, was still a "scholar."

Also in the 1861 census is another family that is likely related, living at 38 Club Square: Robert Slack, age 60, cotton stocking FWK; Eliza, his wife, 40; Herbert, 12; Frederick, 6; Gilbert, 4; and Walter, 11 months. I believe the father Robert is the older brother of Gilbert, the father of Elizabeth Slack.

In the 1871 census, Gilbert is age 65 and Ann is 64. They are living at 26 Union St., Mansfield. With them are their daughter and son-in-law and infant granddaughter: Joseph & Elizabeth (Slack) Coleman, both 24, and Ann, 6 months (all born Mansfield, Notts). Both Gilbert and his son-in-law Joseph are frame work knitters. Living on the same street are Elizabeth's sister and brother-in-law, John & Sarah Adcock.

In 1881 Gilbert is age 75, widowed, living at 30 Union St., Mansfield. With him are John & Sarah Adcock, both age 38. Sarah is Gilbert's daughter.

In the 1841 census, John & Mary, ages given as 30 for both of them, are at Bancroft Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. They have three children: Ann 4, Martha 2, & John 1. (In the 1841 census ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.)

In 1851, John & Mary are both age 38, still living on Bancroft Lane (number 23 or 123). John is a cotton stockinger and Mary is a seamer. They have five children: Ann 14 (twist factory hand), John 10 (scholar), Sarah 7 (seamer), Thomas 5 (scholar), and Edwin 2.

In 1861 the family is at 34 Bancroft Lane, next to Joshua & Ann and family. They have seven children.

In the 1871 census, John and Mary Slack, both age 59, are living at 34 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield, England. Three of their sons are in the household; Edwin and his wife Lavina (?), Gilbert, & Willie. Other Slack families are nearby on the street: John & Ann, Charles & Mary, Frederick & Mary Ann.

In 1881 John & Mary, their ages given as 67, are living at 34 Botany Lane (this must be Bancroft Lane). Gilbert, 29, is with them. Next door at #35 are John & Ann and their two children, Emma & Edward. Also nearby on the same street, #38, are Frederick & Mary Ann and their children; and at #36, Charles & Mary and their children.

In the 1851 census, Joshua Slack is age 34, and his wife Ann is 35. He is a cotton stockinger and she is a seamer. The family, living at 12 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield, includes four children: Ann 10, Sarah 9, Edward 5, and Thomas 2. They are living near several other Slack households.

In 1861 the family is 33 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield; they have 8 children. Son Gilbert has died.

Joshua married Ann Spittlehouse 21 Jul 1845, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Ann (daughter of Richard Spittlehouse and Martha Williamson) was born Abt May 1816; was christened 19 May 1816; died 24 Jun 1880, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England; was buried 28 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

In 1871, Charles & Mary and their two oldest children are living at 36 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield, next door to (presumed) brother John and his family. Other Slack relatives are on the same street. They appear to be at the same place in 1881.

In 1891 the family is at 13 Padley Hill. Charles is 48, Mary is 45, and their 6 youngest children are in the household.

In 1901 Charles is 60, Mary is 50, and they are at 25 Padly. Four of their children are with them: Annie, John, Frank, & Mary.

Five of his children, all young adults, are in the household. In 1901 he is a widower age 70, living at 62 Nottingham Rd., Mansfield. With him are four adult daughters: Mary A. 42, Elizabeth 37, Ellen 35, & Ada 27.

I have made an assumption that Gilbert Slack, age 35 in the 1891 census, is the son of Robert & Eliza. Gilbert & Ann are living at Cossall, Nottinghamshire. It appears that they have no children.

In 1901 they are at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. With them is a son, James R., age 21, a groom, born Leicester. Perhaps he was adopted (?). The only James R. Slack I have found in the 1891 census is th right age, but was born in Lancashire and is living in Lancashire, a son of James Slack.

Gilbert — Annie E. Unknown. Annie was born Abt 1860, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England; died Aft Apr 1901. [Group Sheet]

I am making an assumption that this family in the 1871 & 1881 British Census belongs to him. The year and place of birth fit; plus, a daughter is named Ellen, and my grandma used to speak of a cousin "Nellie Slack." Elizabeth seems to be the "servant" age 18 who is living with Joseph & Elizabeth Coleman and family in the 1891 census.

In 1871 they are at 1 Union St.; in 1881 they are at 47 Union St., Mansfield.

In 1891 Ann is a widow, still at 47 Union St.

The son John, born c1860, apparently is the one who is married to Mary, and with whom his cousin Florrie Coleman (my great aunt) is living in 1901.

I am making an assumption that John Slack, age 40 in the 1881 census, living at 20 The Lawn, with his wife Charlotte, 32, is the son of Gilbert & Ann Slack. His age seems to be a year or so off, but that may not be unusual. In 1861, the Gilbert Slack family was living at 26 The Lawn, so perhaps John stayed in that area when he married.

In 1891 they are at 8 Club Row, Mansfield. Their daughter, Elizabeth, is age 25. Nearby is John's widowed sister-in-law, Ann, and her three children who are still at home.

In 1901 this couple are ages 61 & 51, living at 90 Nottingham Rd., Mansfield.

From the GRO index: the only Elizabeth Coleman death in Mansfield 1891 to 1894 was Elizabeth Coleman, aged 46, September 1893, Mansfield, vol 7b page 64.

From the Bristol Mercury, no. 14149, Friday 15 September 1893: "CHOLERA EPIDEMIC. The wife of a fishmonger and fruiterer named COLEMAN living at Mansfield, Notts died of cholera yesterday morning within twenty hours of being attacked. It is not known yet whether the disease was of the Asiatic type. The case has been reported to the Local Government Board." (from Alan Battams)

Elizabeth Coleman was buried on the 15th September 1892 [1893?] in Mansfield Cemetery in Grave No: 5695 in the Traditional Section. Also in the Grave was John Joseph Coleman who was buried on the 13th March 1899, Emily Annie Lack was buried on the 2nd November 1903 and Horace Coleman on the 8th June 1917.

In 1881 he is age 29, still living with his parents, John & Mary Slack, at 34 Botany Lane ( Bancroft?), Mansfield.

I think he is probably the one still single and age 38 in the 1891 census, lodging at 43 Bancroft Lane.

This is confirmed by the 1901 census, in which Gilbert Slack, age 49 and unmarried, is living with his brother Willie and family. In all the censuses he is a labourer.

In 1901, Willie & Emma are living at 4 Stanhope St., Mansfield. With them are their four children, as well as Willie's brother, Gilbert, age 49.

According to the church records, Ann Slack was an illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Slack of Bancroft Lane, stockinger. I am not absolutely sure that her mother was the Elizabeth born c1813, but that is where I have placed her, pending further research.

In the 1881 census, Joshua & Harriett Slack are living at Nails Lane, Mansfield. They have three young children: Alfred, Lucy, & Ernest.

In 1891 and 1901 the family is at 26 Quarry Lane, Mansfield. In 1891 they have six chidren; by 1901 son Alfred is married.

In 1891 the family is living at 19 Rookery, Mansfield. Also nearby on the same street are Gilbert & Hannah Slack and their family. I suspect that these two men, James & Gilbert, are brothers, the sons of Samuel & Eliza, because this couple had two sons of these names which fit their ages in the census. However, since there were several Gilberts born at Mansfield within a few years of each other, I can not be certain.

Also on the street is a Hannah Slack, widow, age 74, a seamstress. I am not sure who she is.

In the 1871 census, he is probably the Gilbert Slack age 21 b. Mansfield, who is in the 7th dragoons at Walmer, Kent, England.

He may also be the Gilbert Slack age 29 b. Mansfield who is lodging at Radford in 1881; occupation frame work knitter.

In the 1891 census this family is living at 23 Rookery, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Gilbert & Hannah have four children. He is a hosiery factory hand.

In 1901 they are at 17 Mount Pleasant, and have three more children. Gilbert is a self-employed window cleaner. (Ancestry has the family incorrectly indexed under the name Stack.)

The two sons John & Gilbert may very will be the two by those names who arrived in America (Ellis Island) on 17 Apr 1907 on the ship Oceanic from Liverpool. They were from Mansfield; John was 24 and Gilbert was 22. I haven't been able to locate either of them in any US census.
