    In the 1850 Federal Census, Martha Remington is age 79, living at Smithfield, RI. She is living with Robert & Martha Aldrich and their two children, Orville & Ellen. Also in the household are Mahala (Remington) Paine, Ann (Remington) Follett, and her two children, William & Lucia.

    Notes:

    Zilpha's name as well as her husband's came to my attention through a descendant, Diana Koch.

    In the Federal Census of 1880, Zilpha Payne is a widow aged 82, living on South Main Street in Woonsocket, RI. With her are Martha Payne 42 and Ellen Barnes 50, identified as her daughters. They are both dressmakers.

    Martha was appointed executrix of Zilpha's estate. Her will, which names her husband and four living children (and spouses), was witnessed by Thomas Steere, Arlon Mowry, and James I. Hotchkiss.

    Appointed by the Court to take inventory of Zilpha's estate were Arlon Mowry, James I. Hotchkiss, and Albert C. Smith.

    According to the obituary, Zilpha's funeral took place at her late residence, 146 South Main St., Woonsocket. Rev. C. J. White officiated; pallbearers were George C. Wilder, Thomas B. Staples, Amasa Arnold, and Arlon Mowry. (Arlon is a son of Barney Mowry, 1850 census; he has Mowry and Paine ancestry; see Rootsweb's Worldconnect.)

    Zilpha married Thomas A. Paine Abt 1820. Thomas (son of Arnold Paine, Jr. and Anne Aldrich) was born Abt 1796, RI; died 14 Aug 1879; was buried , Arnold-Vose Cemetery, East Orchard St., Woonsocket, RI. [Group Sheet]

    In the 1860 Federal Census, Ann Eliza Follett is age 50, living at Smithfield, RI. With her are Charles & Lucia Whipple, ages 30 & 24. Lucia is Ann's daughter. They are living near William & Harriet Follett and their infant son Albert.

    In 1870, Ann E. Follett is age 67, "keeping house" at Smithfield, RI. With her is Mattie B. Wilbour, age 11, b RI.

    In 1880 Ann E. Follett is age 70, still keeping house, but now in Wonsocket, RI. Also in the household is son William I. Follett, 45, and his family: wife Harriett, 45, and two children -- Albert T. 20, & Annie M. 5.

    In 1860, Lyman & Sally B. Remington, ages 47 & 45, are still at Scituate, RI. Albert & Maria Wheeler, ages 20 & 16, are with them. Maria is their daughter. Next door is another married daughter, Angeline Smith, with her husband Albert and infant son Walter.

    In 1870 Lyman & Sarah B. Remington are ages 56 & 57, still living at Scituate.

    In 1880 Lyman & Sarah Remington, ages 70 & 68, are living at Cranston, RI.

    Lyman married Sarah "Sally" B. Unknown Bef 1830. Sarah was born Abt 1812, RI; died 26 Jan 1885; was buried , Glenford Cemetery, Angel Lane, Scituate, RI. [Group Sheet]

    In 1880, Martha Aldrich is age 68, widowed, and living at Woonsocket, RI. She is living alone. Nearby is daughter Ellen Smart and her family.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Mahala Paine is age 35, living at Smithfield, RI, in the Aldrich household. Also there are her mother, sisters, brother-in-law, and nephews & nieces, for a total of nine individuals.

    In 1860 she is Mahala Lewis, age 45, living at Mendon, Worcester Co., MA. She has remarried to Griffin Lewis, age 47 in the census.

    In 1870 they are back in Smithfield, RI, ages 66 & 55, and in 1880 they are at Woonsocket, RI, as are the other two sisters.

    Notes from Prudence Fish, a descendant: "Mahala Remington married Smith Paine who later abandoned her and apparently went to Missouri where he had another family."

    After the death of her second husband, "she moved from Smithfield, Rhode Island, to Oxford, Maine, and lived with her only child, George Paine, and his wife and son."
