Mary (Brayton) Manchester's sworn statement of 5 Nov 1838 is included in her husband's Revolutionary War Pension File. It gives her husband's dates of birth and death, her date and location of birth, her maiden name, and their date of marriage.

Mary married John Manchester 24 Apr 1785, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. John (son of Peleg Manchester and Margaret Coggeshall) was born 28 Mar 1761, Tiverton, RI; died 28 Oct 1833. [Group Sheet]

"Borden Brayton, youngest of the children of David and Deborah (Borden) Brayton, was born May 25, 1760. He married, September 12, 1784, Mary Remington, daughter of Joseph Remington, and in Tiverton the births of all their children are recorded. Their children were: Deborah, born May 23, 1785; Thomas, born Dec. 30, 1786, was captain of the first passenger boat which ran between Providence and Fall River, and his son, Captain Benjamin Brayton, ran a steamer between Providence and New York for thirty years; Innocent, born Feb. 11, 1789; Abigail, Jan. 27, 1791; David, Oct. 16, 1792; Hannah, May 9, 1794; Francis, mentioned below; Sarah, July 18, 1799; Patience, Nov. 6, 1802; Borden, Oct. 29, 1804; and Mary, June 10, 1808." Borden's will, dated 29 Nov 1849, mentions sons Thomas, Francis, David, & Borden; daughters Innocent Wodell & Hannah Mosher; and grandchildren Thomas, Brayton, Job, & Borden Wodell; Israel Brayton, s/o Francis; and Rodney & Timothy, s/o David.

A Brayton genealogy says Borden died at the family home on Stafford Rd., Tiverton.

Borden was a Revolutionary War soldier and a pensioner (#S21087). He served 24 months as a private. On 4 Nov 1833 at age 73, resident of Tiverton, he appeared in court for his pension hearing. Part of his military service was in Capt. Joseph Durfee's company, Col. John Hathaway's Regt. He testified that he served in Dec 1776 one month at Freetown under Capt. Henry Brightman and served as a guard in Fall River. Capt. Thomas Elsbree and Capt Burt are also mentioned. In 1780 he was captured on board a privateer and taken to New York, and was released in 1782. Borden said he was born at Newport, RI, 25 May 1760 and moved with his father to Freetown, MA, the part that later became Troy (now Fall River), in 1775. He resided there until he entered the service, and from then to 1783, when he moved to the adjoining town of Tiverton, where he has lived ever since. He said the only record of his birth (that he knew of) was in the family Bible.

Borden and Mary's graves have been removed from the family farm and are now in a Brayton-Remington family plot at Pleasant View Cemetery, Stone Church Rd., Tiverton. Both sets of their parents are there, as well as several other family members.

David married Hope Stafford Bef 1816. Hope (daughter of Stephen Stafford and Abigail Durfee) was born 17 Feb 1787, Tiverton, RI; died 12 Sep 1863, Tiverton, RI. [Group Sheet]

Benjamin's death record at Fall River, MA, identifies his parents as John & Mary (m n Brayton); it gives both his and their birthplace as Tiverton, RI. Benjamin died at 12:30 pm on 10 Jan 1864, aged 76 y 4 m 23 d.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Lucy A. Manchester, ages 60 & 56, are living at Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. Also in the household are the following individuals: Delana Dunlap 30 RI, Mary A. Manchester 23 MA, Lucy A. Manchester 17 RI, James Manchester 13 RI, Stephen Manchester 21 MA, Alexander Manchester 28 RI, Reuben Downing 30 MA, & Nancy Downing 27 RI. They are next door to the Hoyt family, and also to the family of Silas Manchester age 37; Silas may be a son of Benjamin & Lucy, as three of the individuals in that household appear to be living with Benjamin in 1860.

In 1860 Benjamin is age 72, widowed and "infirm," living at Fall River, Bristol Co., MA. The census identifies his birthplace as Tiverton, RI. In the household with him are the following individuals, all surname Manchester: Delaney 40 (b Tiverton, RI), Mary 40 (b Tiverton, RI), Stephen 38 (b Fall River, MA), Mary A. 30 (b Fall River, MA), Eleanor 22 (b Tiverton, RI), Emeline 18 (b Tiverton, RI), Lucy 25 (b Fall River, MA), James 20 (b Fall River, MA), & Almira 13 (b Fall River, MA). Of these individuals, Mary, Emeline, & Almira were likely in the household of Silas Manchester in 1850.

I am not absolutely sure how many of these individuals belong to Benjamin & Lucy, but based on the 1850 & 1860 census data, I have made an assumption that they probably had at least these six children, as listed in this family group. Alexander may also be theirs, also possibly Nancy. (This family needs more research.)

As noted by genealogist John Redfern, Benjamin and his sister Meribah are mentioned in the 17 Feb 1812 will of Mary (Borden) Sherman of Tiverton.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Rachel Fish is living at Tiverton, RI. Her age is given as 57. In the household is Joseph Fish, 21, a miner; and George Borden, age 12, mentioned in the 1848 will of Rachel's husband as "George Washington Borden who now lives with me." They are living next to John & Judith Manchester and family; probably John is Rachel's brother. On the other side of Rachel is Peace (Bennett) Hambly and family (she is aunt our ancestor Mary Ann Hambly who married Ben Remington).

Rachel B. Fish, wife of Robert, is mentioned as a sister in the will of Mary Ann Manchester.

The will of Mary Ann Manchester of Tiverton, spinster alias singlewoman, is dated 6 Nov 1837 and proved 5 Feb 1838. In it she mentions her sister Rachel B. Fish, w/o Robert Fish. Also mentioned, no relationship specified, is Philip Manchester, s/o David & Hope.

I have roughly estimated Mary Ann's year of birth.

According to the book "Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island" Vol II, p. 1662, John S. Manchester was a son of John Manchester b 28 Mar 1761 and Miss Brayton.

Apparently his two youngest children as of 1840, Mary A. & John W., died the same month, March 1840.

I believe he belongs in this family, because in the 1850 Federal Census, he and his family are living at Tiverton, RI, next door to Rachel Fish and family. Rachel is his sister.

In 1850, John is 53 and Judith is 45. Also in the household are children Isaac 18, Elizabeth & Alice -- both 16, John 9, & Mary 5. Other individuals there are Alice Manchester 73 (I think this should read Alice Durfee, Judith's mother), George Durfee 20, & Catherine Grinnell 56. They are living next to Rachel Fish, age 57 RI (his sister, see above note), George Borden 12 MA, & Joseph Fish 21 RI.

In 1860 the family is still at Tiverton: John 64, Judith 55, Isaac D. 28, Alice D. Campbell 22, John E. 19, & Mary J. 16.

They are also living near Peace Hambly and family (Peace is aunt to our ancestor, Mary Ann [Hambly] Remington).

In his father's will, Francis received 70 acres of his father's land in Fall River, taken from the easterly part with dwelling and buildings thereon.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Francis and Agnes and family are living at Fall River, MA. He is a farmer.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Francis is a widower age 65, still a farmer at Fall River. Three of his adult children are in the household.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Francis age 73 is living at Fall River, MA. He is a farmer, living with the family of Cornelius Kennedy.

Francis married Agnes Lake 23 Feb 1821. Agnes (daughter of Pardon Lake and Ruth Macomber) was born 1798; died 27 Oct 1852. [Group Sheet]

In his father's will, Borden received "all the rest of my land in Fall River" along with my desk and everything not yet mentioned as given away. Borden was the executor of his father's estate.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Borden Brayton is age 55, a farmer living at Tiverton, RI. In the household are 8 of Borden's children: Abraham 21, Mary 19, Borden 18, John 14, Willard 12, Thomas 10, Gardner 7, and Patience 5. They are living near David & Eunice Brayton and family.
