Esquire Joseph Remington, III

Notes:

He is referred to as Joseph Remington, Jr., in some of the Scituate town records.

I have estimated the birth years of several of Joseph's children. His will mentions his wife, Ann, and the following children: Daniel, Robert (under 21), Mary, Ruth, Sophia, Susanna, & Betsey (last three under 18). Executors were sons James & Jeremiah.

Many genealogies show Joseph Lippitt Remington as husband of Alice and father of these children. However, information provided by Barbara Chase has shown this to be erroneous. A deed found in Scituate Land Evidence Bk 11 p 473, dated 20 Feb 1813, mentions Elizabeth Remington, widow of Joseph Sr.; Alice Remington widow of Joseph Jr.; and James Remington of Scituate and his wife Isabel. This transaction involved the sale of land to Ebenezer, Stephen, & Abraham Burlingame.

He is very possibly the Joseph Remington mentioned in the following list:

An Historical Sketch of The Town of Scituate, R.I.; Part 4: "Scituate was not invaded, but she was called upon, and responded nobly to the call, to march her troops to the port. The British, on Sunday, Dec. 8, 1776, landed and took possession of Rhode Island, and remained there until Oct. 25, 1779, during which time the inhabitants were greatly oppressed. In a list of Capt. Knight's company, April 2, 1775, the day after the Lexington battle, are found the following names: Joseph Knight, captain; Samuel Wilbor, Benjamin Wood, Isaac Horton, John Hill, Nathan Walker, James Parker, John Bennet, jr., Jeremiah Almy, Joseph Remington, Nathan Ralfe, John I. Joseph married Alcey or Ann Unknown Abt 1777. Alcey was born Abt 1755; died Aft 15 Mar 1815. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

The marriage record says Daniel was "of Scituate, son of Joseph," so I am making an assumption that this Daniel and his marriage at Cranston belongs to this family line.

Daniel married Abigail "Nabby" Knight 7 Mar 1806, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. Abigail (daughter of Barzillai Knight and Eleanor Carpenter) was born Abt 1787; died Aft 1 Jun 1850. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

A son (deceased) named Henry is not mentioned in Joseph's will. However, the records for Warwick show the death of Henry H. Remington, son of Joseph & Ann, at age 19, unmarried, 29 August 1801. Joseph names his wife as Ann in his will. Whether there was another couple named Joseph & Ann in this time period, I have not yet discovered. In the meantime, I am including Henry in this family group, based on the death record.

He is probably the James Remington listed at Scituate, RI, in the Federal Census of 1810.

James married Isabella Parker 15 Mar 1811, Warwick, RI. Isabella (daughter of Thomas Parker and Susanna Unknown) was born Abt 23 Jul 1790, Scituate, RI; died 15 Aug 1864; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

He lived in Cranston, RI; Grafton, MA; and Rehoboth, MA.

In the 1830 Federal Census, Jeremiah is at Grafton, Worcester County, MA.

Jeremiah is not mentioned in his father's will.

An individual named B. Chase has contacted me with additional data differing from mine concerning Jeremiah's parentage, so this may resolve some of the questions which remain (still needs more research).

Apparently Ruth received a letter of dismissal from the Coventry church (probably Maple Root) to a new (branch) church.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Susan Remington, 50, is living in Scituate, RI, with Russell & Sophia Smith. I believe that Susan & Sophia are sisters.

In 1860, Sophia is age 40, a weaver, living with her mother Isabella at Warwick, RI. In 1870 she is age 50 and still at Warwick, and her niece Sophia Johnson, age 18, is living with her. In 1880 she is living in the household of her nephew Willett A. Johnson. Numerous family members are there.

The RI Cemetery Database has her year of death as 1859.

The RI Death Index identifies him as son of James.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Thomas P. & Mary A. Remington are ages 30 & 26, and are living in Warwick, RI. They are near the household of Johnson B. Colvin, whose wife is Almira (Dyer) (Remington). In the Colvin home are Horace, Andrew, & John Remington, sons of Almira by her first husband, Thomas Russell Remington, second cousin to Thomas P. Remington.

In 1870 Thomas & Mary are still at Warwick, with their eight-year-old son Thomas A. Remington. They are near Betsey Remington, widow of George (s/o Thomas & Almira), and her two children.

In 1880 Thomas & Mary are still living in Warwick, RI. Their son is 15.

Thomas married Mary A. Carter 6 Jan 1853, Warwick, RI. Mary was born 13 May 1834; died 17 Feb 1908. [Group Sheet]

In 1833 Hale Remington came to Fall River, where he became one of its leading businessmen.

Hale married Catherine Groosebeck Van Santvoort Abt 1838. Catherine (daughter of Peleg Van Santvoort and Sarah Barney) was born 29 Nov 1817, Auburn or Albany, NY; died 2 Oct 1884. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

He was active in the Central Congregational Church, being superintendant of the Sunday School, and also involved with the Pleasant Street Mission. He was particularly interested in the conversion of young men. Remington Hall, the auditorium annex to the YMCA building at Fall River, was a gift of Mrs. Remington, in his memory.

On one occasion he spoke to the students at Colby College, ME, on the subject of temperance (not drinking alcoholic beverages). "Mr. Remington was practical and sincere in his advocacy of temperance, and he abandoned smoking because it impaired his influence. He viewed with great alarm the growth of imtemperance among young men, and was earnest in advocating total abstinence . . . Mr. Remington was outspoken in his condemnation of the indifference of the wealthy toward the demands of religion and intemperance . . . "

"Mr. Remington was a man who had faith in and unfailing kindness for people. He believed in men. He counted them worthwhile, and therefore he felt it a thing worth doing to give time, money, counsel, and strength for their moral, physical, and mental welfare . . ."

"At his death, one newspaper said that 'no citizen of Fall River stood higher in the estimation of the people than Mr. Remington.' "

The building which currently houses the Fall River Historical Society was the Remington family home for eight years. Notes from the web site of the Society: "The Historical Society is housed in a granite mansion, built in 1843 in the Greek Revival style for Andrew Robeson, Jr., a prominent businessman. A one-time station on the Underground Railroad, the house was to change hands several times over the next quarter century. In 1870, the building was purchased by Robert Knight Remington, a wealthy Fall River industrialist, who had the entire structure dismantled and moved three-quarters of a mile north to its present location on Rock Street. Enlarged and redesigned in the then-fashionable French Second Empire style, the structure was to serve as home to the Remington family for the next eight years. Due to the prominence of Mrs. Remington's social position and the family's elegant style of living, the residence quickly became the scene of a number of glittering social affairs. Of particular note was the October 10, 1877, wedding reception for the Remington's daughter, Harriet, and George Henry Hills, to which 500 privileged guests were invited, chosen from the over 2000 invited to the ceremony. In order to accommodate their guests, the family had erected a 20-foot by 50-foot pavilion off the circular dining room, only to have it dismantled the following day. Covered extensively by the press, it was noted that 'the array of beautiful dresses was probably never equaled in this city' and that 'the display of diamonds was extensive.' "

"The Merchants Manufacturing Company was organized October 24, 1866, and the factory built on the lot owned by the heirs of the N. B. Borden estate and by adjoining parties. It was through William H. Jennings that the enterprise was put through, he securing the capital of $800,000 in two days. The capital now is $1,500,000. The directors of the company consisted of James Henry, William H. Jennings, Augustus Chace, L. L. Barnard, Robert S. Gibbs, Charles H. Dean, Crawford E. Lindsey, Robert K. Remington, Lafayette Nichols; and James Henry was chosen president and William H. Jennings treasurer. The first cloth was turned out from the new mill in February, 1868, the structure being of granite and five stories in height. This building was enlarged in 1871, its total length then being 397 feet."

In the 1900 Federal Census, Thomas & Mary are living at Warwick, RI. With them is Thomas's widowed mother, Mary A. Remington, age 65.

In the 1920 Federal Census, Thomas & Mary are both age 53, living at 115 Riverpoint Rd., Warwick, RI.

According to the burial permit at Coventry, Thomas committed suicide with a gunshot to his mouth.

Notes:

Clinton Remington had a successful business career as a print cloth broker in Providence and Fall River. For several years he was director of the Fall River Board of Trade. He was Superintendant of the Sunday School at the Central Congregational Church, and in 1897 and 1898 was chosen vice-president of the Massachusetts Sunday School Association, later becoming president. In addition, he was active in several patriotic and fraternal societies.

Clinton married Mary Anna Waterman 18 May 1864, Fall River, Bristol Co., RI. Mary (daughter of Charles C. Waterman and Mary M. Montgomery) was born 28 Mar 1844, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA; died 27 Apr 1918; was buried , Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River, MA. [Group Sheet]
