The will of Thomas Collins of Warwick, RI, is dated 7 Mar 1725/6, and it was proved 18 Mar 1725/6. The will mentions his wife Mary: sons Elizur, William (dec'd), Thomas, Samuell (under age), & Thankful; and daughters Sarah Ruttenborge, Ann Collins, & Abigail Collins (under 18).

I have made an assumption that the Thomas Collins who married Abigail, Anna, & Mary is the son of Elizur & Sarah whose birth is in the Warwick records: "Collins Thomas, of Lieut. Ellyza and Sarah, Oct. 26, 1664."

His will mentions wife Elizabeth; sons Elizur Jr., & William; daughters Mary Remington & Elizabeth Randall; granddaughters Margaret Allen, Elizabeth Randall, Dorcas Remington, & Elizabeth Collins.

There is also a reference in Arnold's "Vital Record of RI" to Elias Collins, of Elias. Is Elias the same individual as Elisha, Elizur, or Eliza?

The will of Thankful Collins of Warwick, yeoman, is dated 14 Feb 1757 and was proved 12 Sep 1757. It mentions his son Thomas; and daughters Elizabeth Remington, Sarah Collins, & Lydia Collins.

There is a notation in James N. Arnold's VRs concerning three of the children of Thankful -- Elizabeth, Sarah, & Thomas -- concerning a birth (or baptism?) at Narragansett on 12 May 1740.

I have made an assumption that her husband was Joseph Remington II who had a wife named Elizabeth.

Notes:

Scituate Land Evidence Vol. 8 p. 39 records a transaction in which Jonathan Remington received a deed on 11 April 1785 from Christopher and Wait Lippitt. Probably it refers to this Jonathan. Since his great-grandmother was Martha Lippitt, probably Christopher was a relative.

The following may pertain to this Jonathan:

In the 1800 Federal Census, he is listed at Scituate as Jonathan Remmington (same page as Joseph Remington), with a household as follows: 1 FWM 45+, 2 FWF <10, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44, and 1 FWF 45+.

In 1810 he is listed at Scituate as Johnathan Remington, but the household consists of just an adult male and an adult female.

On 20 March 1776, Elisha & Desire Clark of North Kingstown purchased land in Exeter from Jonathan Remington of Warwick, yeoman. Was it this Jonathan? If so, he would have been about 33. But see other Jonathan Remingtons on this tree.

Boyd Scott Remington shows two marriages for him, so I am entering them, although no sources are noted (needs further research).

I have tentatively determined this Thomas Remington's parentage from his Revolutionary War pension file, in which his sister Mary Bennett gives a sworn testimony. I have made an assumption that his sister Mary Bennett, is the same Mary as the daughter of Thomas & Mary (Collins) Remington.

It is possible that Mary (Remington) Bennett and her brother Thomas, Jr., were children of a different Thomas Remington; however, given their ages and locality, this family is the most likely. No other Thomas Remington of record has proved to be a possibility, although there were other Thomas Remingtons born in Rhode Island of whom nothing else is known.

According to his pension file data at the National Archives in Waltham (George Sermuksnis, Archives Technician), Thomas was residing at Providence when he received his pension. He lived in Warwick during the the Revolutionary War.

Please note that some online genealogies have shown Mary Wood as a second wife for the Thomas Remington, Jr., who is the son of Thomas & Abigail (Eldred) Remington, of Cowesett, Warwick, RI. However, that is incorrect, as that Thomas has a different date of death: 6 Aug 1817. His grave is in Coventry, RI. Also, there is no William or Charles among their known children.

From "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files," Vol. III: N - Z, abstracted by Virgil D. White, The National Historical Publishing Co., Waynesboro, TN, 1992, p. 2849, summary of his pension file:

"REMINGTON Thomas, Mary, RI Line, W13847, sol was a son of Thomas Remington & he m Mary daughter or [sic] William Wood on 7 Jun 1778 at Warwick RI, sol d 19 Jan 1831, wid appl 29 Octg [sic] 1836 at Cranston RI & she d there 29 Mar 1837 & the bal due wid at her death was paid to the following children; Charles, Daniel & William Remington her only surviving children."

Although Thomas was a Revolutionary War Veteran and his wife Mary received his pension, it is not known where either of them is buried.

The Federal Census of 1790 lists 4 Thomas Remingtons in Warwick. I am assuming that one of these is this particular Thomas, likely the one designated as Thomas Remington, Jr. and living near another Thomas Remington. The household shows 5 free white males under age 16, 1 free white male 16 and over, and 3 free white females. This suggests that there may have been 5 sons and 2 daughters in the family at that time.

"Cousin Thomas Remington Jr. of Coventry" is named as executor in the 1805 will of Thomas Collins of Foster, yeoman, who died about Mar 1818 when the will was proved.

There may have been a son named Henry. The 1810 census shows a Charles Remington and a Henry Remington listed next to each other. Both Charles and William included the name Henry among their children.

The inventory of the estate of Thomas Remington was taken between June and August 1831. Charles Remington was the Administrator, appraisers were Christopher Spencer, Edmund Burke, and George Carder. The image of the inventory, totalling $91.11, is viewable at ancestry.com. Two of the individuals listed as having claims are William and Joseph Remington.

She may be the Prudence Remington who married Pearce Budlong at Warwick on 27 Aug 1769. I have made this assumption in placing this marriage here on this family tree.

The marriage record identifies her as d/o Thomas Remington. I have made an assumption that the Mary Remington, daughter of Thomas, who married Joseph Bennett is the same Mary who is a daughter of Thomas & Mary (Collins) Remington (this needs more research to confirm).

On 15 Sep 1837, Mary Bennett, at age 84, gave a sworn statement concerning her brother Thomas's Revolutionary War service. I am making an assumption that they are both children of Thomas Remington & Mary Collins, since this couple had a daughter Mary born 20 Mar 1753, and this agrees closely with the date of birth calculated from the gravestone of Mary Bennett.

The gravestone says she died on 14 Jan 1847 at the age of 93 y 10 m 4 d. This would compute to a dob of 10 Mar 1753.

The online transcript has her dob as 20 Mar 1853.

It is possible that Mary (Remington) Bennett and her brother Thomas, Jr., were children of a different Thomas Remington; however, given their ages and locality, this family is the most likely.

Some genealogies have another Mary Remington, d/o Thomas Remington and Abigail Eldred(ge), as the one who married Joseph Bennett; sometimes two marriages are given for Mary. However, this is not possible, since the other Mary married Josephus Rice and is mentioned as Mary Rice in the will of her father thomas Remington dated 11 June 1798. Joseph Bennett and his wife Mary (Remington) had a child in July 1798, whose birth is recorded in the VRs, so they cannot be the same Mary.

Boyd Scott Remington includes this son in the family group, although he does not appear in the Scituate Town Hall records that I checked. BSR includes no source documentation. It may be that BSR erroneously placed here the the John Remington born 29 July 1757, but slightly altered the birth year.

However, he is listed as a son in this family group, in the Burlingame Manuscript Book I, p. 50 (at RI Historical Society Library).

This is the record from James N. Arnold's VRs: REMINGTON John, July 29, 1754. It is out of date order among the children. I have not seen the original at Cranston, but maybe it is 1774, which would be the correct order.

BSR's ancestry chart has the incorrect birth date for this John, with no marriage noted. He says that John was at Argyle, NY, in 1790 and at Litchfield, NY, in 1800. That may be correct. The 1790 census shows a John and a Stephen Remington at Argyle.

I don't remember my source for this marriage to Mary Green -- probably the DAR Patriot Index (needs more research). However, the death date of 1840 may be incorrect for this John Remington, since the other one (b. 1756, s/o Thomas & Abigail of Warwick) died in 1840. Someone may have confused the two John Remingtons, both born in RI around the same year.

Boyd Scott Remington has this Freelove married to David Atwood. However, there may have been another Freelove, born to Thomas & Freelove (Nichols) Remington, in 1765. He is referred to as Joseph Remington, Jr., in some of the Scituate town records.

I have estimated the birth years of several of Joseph's children. His will mentions his wife, Ann, and the following children: Daniel, Robert (under 21), Mary, Ruth, Sophia, Susanna, & Betsey (last three under 18). Executors were sons James & Jeremiah.

Many genealogies show Joseph Lippitt Remington as husband of Alice and father of these children. However, information provided by Barbara Chase has shown this to be erroneous. A deed found in Scituate Land Evidence Bk 11 p 473, dated 20 Feb 1813, mentions Elizabeth Remington, widow of Joseph Sr.; Alice Remington widow of Joseph Jr.; and James Remington of Scituate and his wife Isabel. This transaction involved the sale of land to Ebenezer, Stephen, & Abraham Burlingame.

He is very possibly the Joseph Remington mentioned in the following list:

An Historical Sketch of The Town of Scituate, R.I.; Part 4: "Scituate was not invaded, but she was called upon, and responded nobly to the call, to march her troops to the port. The British, on Sunday, Dec. 8, 1776, landed and took possession of Rhode Island, and remained there until Oct. 25, 1779, during which time the inhabitants were greatly oppressed. In a list of Capt. Knight's company, April 2, 1775, the day after the Lexington battle, are found the following names: Joseph Knight, captain; Samuel Wilbor, Benjamin Wood, Isaac Horton, John Hill, Nathan Walker, James Parker, John Bennet, jr., Jeremiah Almy, Joseph Remington, Nathan Ralfe, John I. A Sarah Remington of Cranston, singlewoman, filed a will dated 9 Jan 1803, proved 25 Nov 1820. In it she mentions her father Joseph Remington, deceased, and her brother Joseph Remington. Her two daughters were Elizabeth & Sarah Remington.

Boyd Scott Remington's chart shows this Sarah's death as 11 Nov 1820, Cranston, RI, but he includes the above data in the family group of Joseph & Innocent Remington, my ancestors. Information from Barbara Chase has shown otherwise.

Additional evidence is the RI Cemetery Database, which shows Sarah Remington c.1752 - 11 Nov 1820, buried in Scituate #83.

Jonathan's name as a son in this family was suggested by Barbara Chase, since land evidence and census records show that a Jonathan Remington was living in Scituate near Joseph Remington. However, those references may be for the Jonathan who married Mary Havens; he was a son of Thomas Remington of Scituate. Thomas was older brother to Joseph.

Her death was reported in both the Providence Journal and the Rhode Island American. Said to have died in her 67th year, she was identified as the widow of Josiah, and daughter of Thomas Remington.

Could she possibly have been the Elizabeth Remington who married Isaac Johnson at Warwick on 28 Oct 1784?

Sarah is mentioned as his daughter Sarah Sheldon in her father's will dated 25 June 1803, Coventry.

The will of Sarah Sheldon of Cranston, widow of Job Sheldon late of Cranston, dec'd., was dated 27 April 1847, and proved 26 May 1849 at Cranston, RI. It mentions sons Asahel & Thomas Fenner, both deceased, and a (probably) unnamed daughter who apparently had married Andrew Knight. Grandchildren mentioned are children of Asahel -- Leander, Ann Maria, & Mary Jane; children of Thomas -- James M., Thomas R., Alexander W., & Edwin E.; and children of Andrew Knight -- Caroline, & Sarah (Mrs. William S. Minkley).

Sarah married James Fenner Abt 1790. James (son of Asahel Fenner and Robe Sarle) was born Abt 1760; died 14 Jan 1799. [Group Sheet]

I believe this Thomas Remington, Jr., is the one mentioned as a cousin in the will of Thomas Collins of Foster, dated 24 May 1805. The word cousin can mean relative, or he could mean first cousin, as we use the term today.

Information on some individuals in this family group came from "Representative Men & Old Families of Rhode Island," Vol. I (Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co., 1908), p. 591. The dates for Thomas came from the RI Cemetery Database, Coventry Historical Cemetery #148.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Thomas & Patience are in their 70s and living at Coventry, RI, with their daughters Eliza and Susan.

I am not sure that Sheffield belongs in this family -- see notes for him. However, evidence of location, dates, and names strongly supports this conclusion.

Richmond was undoubtedly named for Esther Richmond, an ancestor on his mother's side of the family (his mother's maternal grandmother).

In a "fit of insanity" he killed his wife. According to Nailer Tom's diary, Richmond killed his wife then cut his own throat. Supposedly his body was buried in a lone grave near Arkwright in Coventry, off Clark Rd. near cemetery #113 (see RI Cemetery Database, Coventry cemeteries).

Newspaper report: "REMINGTON Richmond, near Arkwright factory, while insane killed his wife with an axe and himself with a butcher's knife; he leaves 7 children to deplore the event." (Patriot of May 31, 1823)

I have estimated the birth years for three of Richmond & Rosy's children, pending further research.
