His name is sometimes written as Arannah or Aaron in the census records at Onondaga and Allegany Counties, NY.

The 1820 Federal Census at Marcellus, Onondaga Co., NY lists the following Wightmans: Allen & Arannah. It appears that Allen is age 26 - 45 yrs, and Arannah is 45+.

The 1830 Federal Census at Bolivar, Allegany Co., NY, lists the following Wightmans: Simon, Aaron, E.H.

The 1840 Federal Census at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY, list the following Wightmans: A., E.H., S., & L.

I am including Allen as a son here because in the 1820 Federal Census at Marcellus,Onondaga Co.,NY, the following Wightmans are listed: Allen & Arannah. It appears that Allen is age 26 - 45 yrs, and Arannah is 45+.

Since another Allen Wightman was born in 1805 (from gravestone info), they cannot be the same individual.

The 1840 Federal Census at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY, list the following Wightmans: A., E.H., S., & L.

In the Federal Census of 1850 at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY, Simon (Simeon) Wightman is 66 CT and Catherine is 64 NY. With them is Maria Wightman 37 NY, presumably a daughter; also Samuel Cusses 8 NY and Caroline D. Cusses 4 MI.

In 1825, Simon Wightman was an Overseer of the Poor at Bolivar, appointed by the Town Council.

The following is excerpted from "Allegany County and its people: a centennial memorial history of Allegany County, New York" (Alfred, N.Y.: W.A. Fergusson & Co., 1896) p 865: "Simon Wightman came from Skaneateles, Onondaga Co., to this county about 1812, and took up a lot of 150 acres, whose timber he felled and hewed, made his house of logs, and raised a small crop for present sustenance. He married Catherine Allen. They had 10 children of whom 3 survive: William of Turtle Point, PA; Morton, and Simon. Morton was born Oct 11, 1824, married in 1850, Calista, daughter of Rev. I. Knapp of Wirt and Sally Stanton his wife. His children living are Mark A. and Luther L. Simon Wightman, son of Simon and Catherine (Allen) Wightman, born March 6, 1827, married Melissa S. Gilbert, Sept 25, 1853. Their children are Rosa E., Frank M. and Bennie A. Simon Wightman Sr. and his wife Catherine were among the constituent members of the Baptist Church of Richburg, organized in 1828."

Beers, 1879) p 381: The First-Day Baptist Church of Richburg was set off from the Baptist Church of Friendship and constituted as a church 29 Feb 1828. Among its founding members were the following Wightmans: Simon, Catherine, Roona (Roomy?), Rhoda, & Edward. Also, on its list of deacons or clerks is E. H. Wightman.

Simon married Catherine Allen 29 Sep 1805. Catherine was born 29 Sep 1786, NY; died 28 Nov 1871, Allegany Co., NY; was buried , Dimick-Wirt Cemetery, Allegany Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

In the Federal Census of 1850, the Wightman family is living at Bolivar, Allegany Co., NY: Allen 45 NY (lumberman), Amanda V. 33 RI, Aurelia 16 NY, Samuel 12 NY, Josephine 10 NY, Allen 7 NY, & Caroline A. 4 NY; also Isaac D. Smith 33 NY.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Allen Wightman 54 NY is listed at Half Moon (Villiage of Eau Claire City), Eau Claire Co., WI. He is working as a blacksmith, apparently staying at a hotel. Two of his married daughters later moved to Eau Claire Co., WI.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Allen 69 and his son Allen Jr. 27 are living at Alma, Allegany Co., NY. No other family members are listed with them. Allen Sr. works in a shingle mill, and Allen Jr. is a farmer.

The online cemetery information says Allen was born in Onondaga Co., NY, and died in Allegany Co., NY.

The 1820 Federal Census lists Arannah Wightman in Onondaga Co., NY. I believe this must be Allen's father, based on his birth location; this agrees with two online family trees (but needs more research to confirm). His name (Arannah or Aurunah) may be written as Aaron in two censuses; the 1830 census shows Aaron Wightman age 60 - 70 at Bolivar, Allegany Co., NY; the 1840 census shows A. Wightman age 70 - 80 at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY.

In Wellsville, Allegany Co,, NY, there is a Wightman Road, off Rt. 417. No doubt it is named for Allen's family or extended family.

Allen married Amanda V. Unknown Abt 1833. Amanda was born May 1812, RI or MA; died 4 Sep 1901, Providence Co., RI; was buried , Mineral Springs Cemetery, Pawtucket, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, Edward H. & Sarah A. Wightman, ages 44 & 40, are living at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. With them in the household are: Anderson (sp?) 19, Henry 17, & Eliza M. 9. They are next door to other Wightman family members: Sally 70, Betsey 68, Julia 32, & Lucy 84 (all b NY).

In the Federal Census of 1870, Edward H. & Sarah A. are ages 65 & 62. They are still at Wirt. With them are the following individuals: Aaron H. Elliott 21 PA; Eliza M. Elliott (or Wightman?) 28 -- most likely their daughter; and Albertis Hazzard 21 NY, works on farm.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Edward & Sarah A., ages 74 & 72, are still at Wirt. Other family members are close by.

Edward H. Wightman was Town Supervisor of Wirt in 1866/67.

I have made an assumption that Maria is a daughter of Simon & Catherine because she is with them in the 1850 Federal Census at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY.

One online family tree has Maria's first name as Rhoda. The church membership list has a Rhoda Wightman (see notes for her father Simon), but Maria is listed in the census records and cemetery records. I am making an assumption that she is the same individual, as noted on Gary Wightman's family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Lathrop & Jane, ages 49 & 45, are living at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. With them are Harriet V. 20 and Elbert E. 13; also Oliver Hazzard 22 who works on the farm.

Lathrop married Jane Pierce Abt 1848. Jane was born 13 May 1825, NY; died 18 Oct 1889, Allegany Co., NY; was buried , Dimick-Wirt Cemetery, Allegany Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

In the Federal Census of 1850, Wm & Melissa are at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. They have a daughter Francelia, 5 mos. Also with them is William's brother Simon, 23.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Wm & Malissa Whitman, ages 35 & 32, are at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. They have four children in the household: F. R. 10, Phebe 7, Wm M. 2, & Emma O. 1. (William M. & Emma both died young.)

In the Federal Census of 1870, William & Melissa, ages 46 & 42, are still living at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. They have four children in the household: Celia 20, Phebe M. 17, Mary E. 7, & Sidney E. 4.

According to the book "Allegany County and its people: a centennial memorial history of Allegany County, New York" (Alfred, N.Y.: W.A. Fergusson & Co., 1896), William, son of Simon & Catherine, lived at Turtle Point, PA, when the book was written. Consequently, I have made an assumption that this William in the 1900 Federal Census is the same individual; he and his wife Melissa are living at Annin Township, McKean Co., PA. Turtle Point is also in McKean Co.

Census data says they have been married 53 years, and have had 7 children, of whom 4 are still living.

The may have had another daughter Elizabeth R., born and died in 1861 (source: online cemetery data).

In the Federal Census of 1850, Simon is age 23, living with his married brother William and family at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY.

In the 1880 Federal Census, the family is at Wirt: Simon 53, Malissa 48, Rosa 22, Frank 19, Bennie 4; and Sally Gilbert 78, "mother."
