Theodore Remington

Notes:

I have made an assumption that Theodore is a son in this family, based on a few points: 1) he named a son Zeno; 2) his birth year range and location place him here; and 3) Theodore and Philander are both mentioned in a land assessment as grantees Jan 1849.

In 1850, Theodore 25 and Margaret 23 are at Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY; they have a son Henry age 1. They appear to be living with or next to the family of Jonah and Malinda Campbell.

My thought: Henry born c1849 is Zeno in later records; his middle initial is H; or, Henry died young and Zeno was born the next year and his middle name is Henry. I have come to the conclusion that Zeno was Theodore's father and Henry was Margaret's father.

In 1860, they are at Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY: Theodore 30, Margaret 28, Zeno 10, George 5, John 1.

Theodore Remington age 42 enlisted for Civil War 1863 in Cayuga, NY; mustered out of service 24 Aug 1865.

In 1865 they are at Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY again: Theodore 32, Margaret 29 ?, Zeno 13 ?, George 8, John 6, Mary S. 4. Unclear, difficult to read. If I understand the census numbering correctly, they are in dwelling number 31, which is headed by Henry and Gertrude Bogardus, ages 75 and 74 (although on separate pages).

In 1870 they are at Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY: Theodore 41, Margaret 39, Zeno 18, George 12, John 10; and Gertrude Bogardus 82. I am making an assumption that she is Margaret's mother.

In 1880, Theodore Remington is age 55, a boarder in the family of John D. and Elinor Bogardus in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. They must also be related thorugh Margaret.

His estimated year of birth changes so much in these records (1825 x2, 1821, 1829, 1830, 1833), but I am sure he is the same individual.

Theodore married Margaret Bogardus Abt 1849, NY. Margaret (daughter of Henry Bogardus and Gertrude Unknown) was born Abt 1832, NY. [Group Sheet]

Auburn City Directory, 1874, lists Zeno H. Remington as a moulder.

He appears to be Ceno H. Rivington 26 married to Martha D. (Young) 22 in the 1875 NY State Census at Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. They have a daughter E?? L. Remington 1 yr 9 mos (unclear). I can't find Zeno anytime after that.

Martha has remarried by 1880 -- see notes for her.

Zeno married Martha Delphine Young Abt. 1873, NY. Martha was born 21 Mar 1853, NY; died 12 Sep 1910, Cayuga Co., NY; was buried , Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron, NY. [Group Sheet]

In the 1880 census, George Remington 24 and John Remington 22 are together at Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY.

He may be George H. Remington who married Theresa Ashley and died 17 Jul 1930 in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. The age and location are right. His grave is in Lakeview Cemetery, Fleming, Cayuga co., NY. This individual needs more research.

In the 1880 census, George Remington 24 and John Remington 22 are together at Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. They are boarding with Martha Willman 19 MA and she is the one John married soon after.

In 1900 this family is in Providence, RI: John ? Remington 39 NY (Feb 1861), Martha 38 MA (June 1861), and Fred T. 18 NY (May 1882).

In the 1920 census, this couple is in Warwick, RI: John B. Remington 60 NY and Martha A. 58 MA.

In the 1925 RI state census, the family is in Providence as follows: Frederick T. Remington 42 NY, Cora N. F. 40 RI, John D. 64 NY, Martha A. 53 MA, and Clara A. Sholes 70 MA mother-in-law.

In 1930 John and Martha are still living in Providence with their son and his wife: Frederick Remington 46 NY, Cora 44 RI, John 72 NY, and Martha 68 MA; also Clara Sholes, mother-in-law 75 MA.

In Jan 1935, John B. and Martha A. Remington are living at 59 Warren, Providence, no occupation given for either. Son Frederick is a salesman for refined oil; Cora N. is a tool inspector at Brown & Sharpe.

In 1940 the family is still in Providence as follows: Fred T. Remington 56 NY, Cora N. 54 RI, and John B. 81 NY, father, widower.

I think his middle initial may have been for his mother's maiden name, although this is not confirmed.

John married Martha Ann Willman Abt. 1881. Martha (daughter of Whitaker Willman and Henrietta Stansfield) was born 9 Jun 1861, Chilmark, Dukes Co., MA; died 19 May 1938, Providence, RI; was buried , Highland Memorial Park, Resthaven 366, Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

Lena married Lyman Hugh Walker 17 Jul 1888, Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. Lyman was born 3 Jun 1868, Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY; died 1922, Cayuga Co., NY; was buried , Lakeview Cemetery, Fleming, Cayuga Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

In the 1875 NY State Census she appears to be Elsa L. Remington age 1 y 9 mos (unclear writing), in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY, with her parents Zeno H. and Martha Remington, and Martha's parents and siblings.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Florence E. "Bodell" 28 (Aug 1871) is a widow living in Auburn with daughter Florence L. 2 (Aug 1897). See notes for daughter Florence.

In 1910 she is Florence Boyd, married to John A Boyd, with daughter Florence L. Bedell age 12, living in Auburn. In 1920 they are living in Cleveland, OH.

In 1940 John A. and Florence L. Boyd are in Philadelphia, PA.

In her mother's obituary of September 1910, Luella is mentioned as daughter Mrs. John Boyd of Auburn.

Sadly, this couple had several babies who died young.

In the 1910 census, Frederick M. Remington 29 NY and Ida M. 19 RI are living in Providence. They have been married three years, and have had two children, but neither of them is living.

In the 1915 RI state census, the family is on Dodge St. in Providence as follows: Frederick T. Remington 37, Ida A. 23, Frederick T. Jr. 3, and Lillian E. 2.

The WW I draft registration card for Frederick Theodore Remington gives his dob as 7 May 1882, age 36, and address as 40 Lyman Ave., Norwood, Kent Co., RI. He works at Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co. as reamer/repairer. He has blue eyes and black hair. Wife Ida M. Remington.

In 1920 the family is still in Providence: Fred T. Remington 38, Ida M. 28, and Fred T. Jr. 8. Fred Sr. is a machinist in a machine shop.

In 1925 Frederick has a different wife, and by 1930 Ida has also remarried and Frederick Jr. is with her. In the 1925 RI state census, the family is in Providence as follows: Frederick T. Remington 42 NY, Cora N. F. 40 RI, John D. 64 NY, Martha A. 53 MA, and Clara A. Sholes 70 MA mother-in-law.

In 1930 the Remington family is in Providence as follows: Frederick Remington 46 NY, Cora 44 RI, John 72 NY, and Martha 68 MA; also Clara Sholes, mother-in-law 75 MA.

Notes:

Florence's marriage names her parents as John A. Bedell and Luella Remington.

Her death record names her parents as John Bedell (b unknown) and Lewellda Remington (b. Auburn, NY).

Her biological father was Charles Bedell; her stepfather was John A. Boyd. Therein lies the confusion in names.

Florence married Ralph Richard Kleinhans 15 Nov 1920, Cuyahoga, OH. Ralph was born 22 May 1897, Youngstown, OH; died 16 Nov 1963, FL; was buried , Brooklyn Heights Cemetery, Cleveland, OH. [Group Sheet]

In 1930, this is the household in Providence: Frances A. Pryor 36, Ida A. Pryor 38, Frederick T. Remington 18 stepson, Gladys 21 daughter-in-law, Gladys M. 4 mos granddaughter, all b RI.

In 1935, Frederick is an etcher in the machine tool industry. The family is living at 41 Harrison St., Providence.

In 1940 the family is in Providence as follows: Frederick Remington 28 RI, Gladys 31 RI, Gladys 10 RI, and Frederick 7 RI.

In July 2001 Fred was living in Coventry, RI (US Public Records).

Findagrave.com gives his date of death as 16 Dec 1992, which does not agree with the SSDI.
