Notes:

The death record in West Greenwich says he died 18 April 1853, at 80 yrs, 2 mos., and 25 days (the family Bible says 15 days). His occupation is given as "farmer." The Pine Grove Cemetery is western-most one of the two across from the Knotty Oak Baptist Church.

James married Mary Greene Abt 7 Feb 1807, East Greenwich, RI. Mary (daughter of Stephen Greene and Elizabeth Unknown) was born 10 Nov 1777, East Greenwich, RI; died 10 Aug 1812, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

James married Maplet REMINGTON 27 Aug 1814, RI. Maplet (daughter of Jonathan REMINGTON and Phebe UNKNOWN) was born 2 Mar 1782, RI or MA; died 20 Dec 1861, West Greenwich, RI; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Washington St., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Her name in the family Bible is Matilda.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Margaret and her five children are living in Champaign, IL. Margaret is age 43, a seamstress.

In 1870 she is M. M. Ralph, age 53 RI, living in Tuscola, Douglas Co., IL. With her is L. N. Ralph age 15 (female?).

In the Federal Census of 1880, Margaret M. Relph is age 64 RI, widowed, still living in Tuscola, Douglas Co., IL. The census says her parents were born in RI/MA. she is living with Charles & Minnie Boarmarter (sp?) and their infant son John.

Margaret married Nathan H. Relph 26 Jun 1843, Coventry, Kent Co., RI. Nathan (son of Nathan Relph) was born Abt 1820, RI; died 27 Apr 1856, Coventry, Kent Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, "Mary R. Matteson," age 28, is living in West Greenwich with her parents, James & Maplet "Batty." Also in the home are Mary's two sons, James B. & Wanton W., and her brother Charles, age 23, and his wife Ann and infant daughter Mary A.

Mary — Horace Bailey Mathewson. Horace (son of Wanton Mathewson and Mercy Whitford) was born 1819; died 4 May 1849; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

The family Bible has his birthdate as 27 Apr 1827.

I believe that Charles wrote a poem about his nephew on the occasion of the death of Rev. Battey. (See notes for Nicholas Battey b 1836)

His gravestone includes the following inscription: "In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:2"

Charles married Ann Eliza Card 8 Sep 1845. Ann (daughter of Gideon Bailey Card and Sophia Ann Wightman) was born 4 May 1827, Coventry, RI; died 26 Dec 1907, Washington, RI; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Washington, RI. [Group Sheet]

I believe this poem, found in the family Bible, was written by Rev. Battey's half-uncle, Charles James Battey:

Elder Nicholas Battey

The man who loved his God,
And loved his work as well,
Was ever faithful to his call
Of winning souls from hell.

He traveled far, he traveled wide,
His Savior to obey;
He's left a mark in every track
For those who lose their way.

He first was called from nature's dark
To light's eternal day,
He next was called to take a part
In what the scriptures say.

He sung and prayed
And talked and prevailed,
And most of life has tried to teach
A sinner to repent.

It was in his youth he sought the Lord,
When he had the promise of a great reward,
He sought and found the precious pearl,
Which did his after life control.

He's traveled o'er his land of birth
And many other miles of earth
To serve his master's call,
But now has gone and left them all.

He's lived the life, he's died the death,
His Savior did command;
And thus he sleeps beneath the sod,
Awaiting orders from his God.
