13. Thomas Remington, Sr. (5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1774. Notes:
Thomas and his heirs received land in Scituate from his father Joseph, 15 March 1743 (Scituate Land Evidence, Vol. 3, p. 27). This was the same land that Joseph had bought in 1731.
There is a record at Scituate dated 28 Jul 1759 of Thomas, resident of Scituate, and his family moving to Portsmouth, RI. (source Barbara Chase)
On 21 Feb 1761, Thomas Remington of Portsmouth sold land and house in Scituate to George Roberts of Warwick. (Sc. Land Ev. Bk 5 p. 319; source Barbara Chase)
He may be the Thomas Remington, son of Joseph, listed at Warwick in the 1774 RI Census. If so, this would mean that he moved from Portsmouth to Warwick.
He may also be one of the 4 Thomas Remingtons listed in the 1790 census at Warwick.
The births of five of Thomas & Mary's children are recorded at Scituate. However, they may have been born elsewhere and recorded there after the family moved to Scituate.Thomas married Mary Collins 23 Nov 1740, Providence, RI. 14. Joseph Remington, II (5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 21 Jan 1720/21, Warwick, RI; died 6 Jul 1800, Scituate, RI. Notes:
This particular Joseph Remington married Elizabeth and lived his whole life at Scituate, RI. Therefore, he is not the one who married Innocent and later moved to Tiverton, RI, as shown in many genealogies.
The following information came from a Remington descendant, Barbara Chase:
On 1 Oct 1765 Joseph Remington sold land parcel 4A in SE part of Scituate where grantees planned to erect a furnace (Stephen Hopkins, Israel Wilkinson, Caleb Arnold, Nicholas Brown, Joseph Brown, Moses Brown, Hob Hawkins). His wife Elizabeth Remington released rights to the land. (Sc Land Ev Bk 5 pp 532-533)
On 25 Jan 1771 (Cr Deed Bk 2 p 186) Joseph Remington of Scituate sold land in Cranston to Thomas Potter of Cranston; mother Margaret Remington released rights.
On 2 Sep 1790, Thomas Arnold of Providence sued Joseph Remington of Scituate; levied on homestead farm of Joseph Remington near Furnace Hope, next to land of Joseph Remington Jr. -- evidently meaning his son (Sc Land Ev Bk 8 p 425).
Date of death - Scituate, RI Probate Records; Vol. 4; p. 20 - Minutes of the Probate Court - 25 Oct 1800 - "Joseph Remington of Scituate, yeoman, departed this life on the 6th Day of July last past and died intestate" . . . Court appointed Joseph Remington Esq, s/o deceased, administrator of sd estate.
I have made an assumption that his wife was Elizabeth Collins, named as Elizabeth Remington in her father will of 1757.Joseph married Elizabeth Collins Abt 1749. Martha married Mr. Collins Bef 28 Jun 1756. [Group Sheet]
16. Lippitt Remington (5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 17 Dec 1729, Warwick, RI. Notes:
According to the dates in the Remington Family book compiled by Martha A. Benns, this family had two sets of twins. Alternatively, they may be dates of baptism rather than birth.
Lippitt was an Ensign in the 3rd Cranston Company, 1763.
From Barbara Chase, a Remington descendant: "Cranston Dd Bk 2; p. 129 - 3 Nov 1769 - Lippitt Remington of Cranston 'in consideration of my mother Margaret' a tract of land belonging to father Joseph Remington deceased; lease to her during her lifetime; with house thereon . . . Cranston Dd Bk 2; p. 129 - 3 Nov 1769 - Robert Knight Jr. of Cranston assigns forever privileges of a 'Burying place' on land purchased of Lippitt Remington 'whereon his father Joseph was buried' . . . 'sd Burying place for ever to Bury their dead.' "Lippitt married Freelove Collins 18 Aug 1754, Scituate, RI. Freelove (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1732. Margaret may have been the Margaret Remington who married Ebenezer Allin on 21 May 1761 (this needs more research to confirm).
If she did marry Ebenezer in 1761, then for some reason she is not mentioned in her father's will of 1758.

40. Jonathan Remington (13.Thomas3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 28 Dec 1743, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI. Notes:
Scituate Land Evidence Vol. 8 p. 39 records a transaction in which Jonathan Remington received a deed on 11 April 1785 from Christopher and Wait Lippitt. Probably it refers to this Jonathan. Since his great-grandmother was Martha Lippitt, probably Christopher was a relative.
The following may pertain to this Jonathan:
In the 1800 Federal Census, he is listed at Scituate as Jonathan Remmington (same page as Joseph Remington), with a household as follows: 1 FWM 45+, 2 FWF <10, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44, and 1 FWF 45+.
In 1810 he is listed at Scituate as Johnathan Remington, but the household consists of just an adult male and an adult female.
On 20 March 1776, Elisha & Desire Clark of North Kingstown purchased land in Exeter from Jonathan Remington of Warwick, yeoman. Was it this Jonathan? If so, he would have been about 33. But see other Jonathan Remingtons on this tree.
Boyd Scott Remington shows two marriages for him, so I am entering them, although no sources are noted (needs further research).Jonathan — Lucy Unknown. [Group Sheet]
Jonathan married Mary Havens 15 Jun 1769, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of Nathaniel Havens) was born Abt 1747, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI. [Group Sheet]

- 77. Russell Remington was born 12 Jul 1776; died 26 Jul 1817; was buried , Historical Cemetery 540 "lost, " Remington Lot, Hope Ave., Scituate, RI.
41. Thomas Remington, Jr. (13.Thomas3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born Between 1745 and 1758; died 19 Jan 1831. Notes:
(If you use any portion of these notes, please give source credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington family researcher and compiler, and to other sources as noted herein.)
I have tentatively determined this Thomas Remington's parentage from his Revolutionary War pension file, in which his sister Mary Bennett gives a sworn testimony. I have made an assumption that his sister Mary Bennett, is the same Mary as the daughter of Thomas & Mary (Collins) Remington.
It is possible that Mary (Remington) Bennett and her brother Thomas, Jr., were children of a different Thomas Remington; however, given their ages and locality, this family is the most likely. No other Thomas Remington of record has proved to be a possibility, although there were other Thomas Remingtons born in Rhode Island of whom nothing else is known.
According to his pension file data at the National Archives in Waltham (George Sermuksnis, Archives Technician), Thomas was residing at Providence when he received his pension. He lived in Warwick during the the Revolutionary War.
Please note that some online genealogies have shown Mary Wood as a second wife for the Thomas Remington, Jr., who is the son of Thomas & Abigail (Eldred) Remington, of Cowesett, Warwick, RI. However, that is incorrect, as that Thomas has a different date of death: 6 Aug 1817. His grave is in Coventry, RI. Also, there is no William or Charles among their known children.
From "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files," Vol. III: N - Z, abstracted by Virgil D. White, The National Historical Publishing Co., Waynesboro, TN, 1992, p. 2849, summary of his pension file:
"REMINGTON Thomas, Mary, RI Line, W13847, sol was a son of Thomas Remington & he m Mary daughter or [sic] William Wood on 7 Jun 1778 at Warwick RI, sol d 19 Jan 1831, wid appl 29 Octg [sic] 1836 at Cranston RI & she d there 29 Mar 1837 & the bal due wid at her death was paid to the following children; Charles, Daniel & William Remington her only surviving children."
Although Thomas was a Revolutionary War Veteran and his wife Mary received his pension, it is not known where either of them is buried.
The Federal Census of 1790 lists 4 Thomas Remingtons in Warwick. I am assuming that one of these is this particular Thomas, likely the one designated as Thomas Remington, Jr. and living near another Thomas Remington. The household shows 5 free white males under age 16, 1 free white male 16 and over, and 3 free white females. This suggests that there may have been 5 sons and 2 daughters in the family at that time.
"Cousin Thomas Remington Jr. of Coventry" is named as executor in the 1805 will of Thomas Collins of Foster, yeoman, who died about Mar 1818 when the will was proved.
There may have been a son named Henry. The 1810 census shows a Charles Remington and a Henry Remington listed next to each other. Both Charles and William included the name Henry among their children.
The inventory of the estate of Thomas Remington was taken between June and August 1831. Charles Remington was the Administrator, appraisers were Christopher Spencer, Edmund Burke, and George Carder. The image of the inventory, totalling $91.11, is viewable at ancestry.com. Two of the individuals listed as having claims are William and Joseph Remington.Thomas married Mary Wood 7 Jun 1778, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of William Wood) was born Abt 1758; died 29 Mar 1837, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

42. Prudence Remington (13.Thomas3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 16 Mar 1748/49, RI; died 27 Sep 1816, RI; was buried , Rev. Samuel Littlefield Lot, Warwick, RI. Notes:
She may be the Prudence Remington who married Pearce Budlong at Warwick on 27 Aug 1769. I have made this assumption in placing this marriage here on this family tree.
Prudence — Samuel Littlefield. Samuel was born 28 Sep 1747; died 22 Oct 1830; was buried , Rev. Samuel Littlefield Lot, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]
Prudence married Pearce Budlong 27 Aug 1769, Warwick, RI. Pearce (son of John Budlong) was born Abt. 1745; died 20 Oct 1769; was buried , John Budlong Lot, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]
43. Joseph Lippitt Remington (13.Thomas3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 15 Jun 1751, Scituate, RI. 44. Mary Remington (13.Thomas3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 23 Mar 1753, RI; died 14 Jan 1847; was buried , Joseph Bennett Lot, White Acorn Circle, Warwick, RI. Notes:
The marriage record identifies her as d/o Thomas Remington. I have made an assumption that the Mary Remington, daughter of Thomas, who married Joseph Bennett is the same Mary who is a daughter of Thomas & Mary (Collins) Remington (this needs more research to confirm).
On 15 Sep 1837, Mary Bennett, at age 84, gave a sworn statement concerning her brother Thomas's Revolutionary War service. I am making an assumption that they are both children of Thomas Remington & Mary Collins, since this couple had a daughter Mary born 20 Mar 1753, and this agrees closely with the date of birth calculated from the gravestone of Mary Bennett.
BENNETT, MARY [REMINGTON] 1754c - 14 JAN 1847 WK016 (RI Cemetery Database)
The gravestone says she died on 14 Jan 1847 at the age of 93 y 10 m 4 d. This would compute to a dob of 10 Mar 1753.
The online transcript has her dob as 20 Mar 1853.
It is possible that Mary (Remington) Bennett and her brother Thomas, Jr., were children of a different Thomas Remington; however, given their ages and locality, this family is the most likely.
Some genealogies have another Mary Remington, d/o Thomas Remington and Abigail Eldred(ge), as the one who married Joseph Bennett; sometimes two marriages are given for Mary. However, this is not possible, since the other Mary married Josephus Rice and is mentioned as Mary Rice in the will of her father thomas Remington dated 11 June 1798. Joseph Bennett and his wife Mary (Remington) had a child in July 1798, whose birth is recorded in the VRs, so they cannot be the same Mary.Mary married Joseph Bennett 9 Dec 1773, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Joseph (son of John Bennett) was born Abt 1744; died 5 Jun 1835; was buried , Joseph Bennett Lot, White Acorn Circle, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]
Children:
- 83. Thomas Bennett was born 28 May 1775, Warwick, RI.

- 91. Almy Bennett was born 3 Jul 1798, Warwick, RI.
45. John Remington (13.Thomas3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 29 Jul 1754, RI. Notes:
Boyd Scott Remington includes this son in the family group, although he does not appear in the Scituate Town Hall records that I checked. BSR includes no source documentation. It may be that BSR erroneously placed here the the John Remington born 29 July 1757, but slightly altered the birth year.
However, he is listed as a son in this family group, in the Burlingame Manuscript Book I, p. 50 (at RI Historical Society Library).46. Joseph Remington, III (14.Joseph3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1750; died Bef 20 Feb 1813. Notes:
He is referred to as Joseph Remington, Jr., in some of the Scituate town records.
I have estimated the birth years of several of Joseph's children. His will mentions his wife, Ann, and the following children: Daniel, Robert (under 21), Mary, Ruth, Sophia, Susanna, & Betsey (last three under 18). Executors were sons James & Jeremiah.
Many genealogies show Joseph Lippitt Remington as husband of Alice and father of these children. However, information provided by Barbara Chase has shown this to be erroneous. A deed found in Scituate Land Evidence Bk 11 p 473, dated 20 Feb 1813, mentions Elizabeth Remington, widow of Joseph Sr.; Alice Remington widow of Joseph Jr.; and James Remington of Scituate and his wife Isabel. This transaction involved the sale of land to Ebenezer, Stephen, & Abraham Burlingame.
He is very possibly the Joseph Remington mentioned in the following list:
An Historical Sketch of The Town of Scituate, R.I.; Part 4: "Scituate was not invaded, but she was called upon, and responded nobly to the call, to march her troops to the port. The British, on Sunday, Dec. 8, 1776, landed and took possession of Rhode Island, and remained there until Oct. 25, 1779, during which time the inhabitants were greatly oppressed. In a list of Capt. Knight's company, April 2, 1775, the day after the Lexington battle, are found the following names: Joseph Knight, captain; Samuel Wilbor, Benjamin Wood, Isaac Horton, John Hill, Nathan Walker, James Parker, John Bennet, jr., Jeremiah Almy, Joseph Remington, Nathan Ralfe, John I. Kilton, Jonathan Knight, jr., Joseph Briggs, David Knight, Joseph Collins, William Taylor John Manchester, Edward Bennett, Thomas Parker, John Edwards, jr., Simeon Wilbor, Isaiah Austin, Samuel Eldridge, Christopher Knight, Samuel Hopkins, Benajah Bosworth, Obadiah Rolfe, Ezekiel Wood, Caleb Fisk, doctor, Jolin Phillips, Constant Graves, Stukely Thornton, James Andrews, jr., Christopher Collins, Joseph Bennet, Thomas Knight, Peleg Colvin, Eleazor Westcott, Caleb Steere, Collins Roberts, Daniel Fisk, William Knight, Nathan Franklin, Uriah Franklin, jr., Ephriam Edwards, Stephen Edwards, Francis Fuller, jr., Benjamin Whitmore, William Stafford, Daniel Angell, Furmer Tanner -- fifty-two in all."Joseph married Alcey or Ann Unknown Abt 1777. Alcey was born Abt 1755; died Aft 15 Mar 1815. [Group Sheet]

- 100. Sophia Remington was born Abt 1798; died 10 Sep 1881; was buried , Russell Smith Lot, Silk Lane, Scituate, RI.
- 101. Susanna Remington was born Abt 1800; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.
47. Sarah Remington (14.Joseph3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1752; died 11 Nov 1820; was buried , Historical Cemetery 83, Seven Mile Rd., Scituate, RI. Notes:
Some information on Sarah and her daughter Sarah came from Remington descendant Barbara Chase.
Sarah died in her 68th year.
A Sarah Remington of Cranston, singlewoman, filed a will dated 9 Jan 1803, proved 25 Nov 1820. In it she mentions her father Joseph Remington, deceased, and her brother Joseph Remington. Her two daughters were Elizabeth & Sarah Remington.
Boyd Scott Remington's chart shows this Sarah's death as 11 Nov 1820, Cranston, RI, but he includes the above data in the family group of Joseph & Innocent Remington, my ancestors. Information from Barbara Chase has shown otherwise.
Additional evidence is the RI Cemetery Database, which shows Sarah Remington c.1752 - 11 Nov 1820, buried in Scituate #83.Sarah — . Unknown [Group Sheet]
Children:
- 102. Elizabeth Remington died Aft 8 Jun 1844.
- 103. Sarah Remington was born 8 Mar 1789; died 18 Sep 1882; was buried , Fall River, MA.
48. Jonathan Remington (14.Joseph3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1754; died Aft 1810. Notes:
Jonathan's name as a son in this family was suggested by Barbara Chase, since land evidence and census records show that a Jonathan Remington was living in Scituate near Joseph Remington. However, those references may be for the Jonathan who married Mary Havens; he was a son of Thomas Remington of Scituate. Thomas was older brother to Joseph.
49. Dorcas Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 28 Feb 1756, Cranston, RI. 50. John Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 29 Jul 1757, Scituate, RI; died 1840, MA. Notes:
This is the record from James N. Arnold's VRs: REMINGTON John, July 29, 1754. It is out of date order among the children. I have not seen the original at Cranston, but maybe it is 1774, which would be the correct order.
BSR's ancestry chart has the incorrect birth date for this John, with no marriage noted. He says that John was at Argyle, NY, in 1790 and at Litchfield, NY, in 1800. That may be correct. The 1790 census shows a John and a Stephen Remington at Argyle.
I don't remember my source for this marriage to Mary Green -- probably the DAR Patriot Index (needs more research). However, the death date of 1840 may be incorrect for this John Remington, since the other one (b. 1756, s/o Thomas & Abigail of Warwick) died in 1840. Someone may have confused the two John Remingtons, both born in RI around the same year.John — Mary Greene. [Group Sheet]
Children:
- 104. Stephen Remington was born Abt 1780, Herkimer or Washington County, NY; died 9 Jul 1849, Pittsburgh, PA; was buried , Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh PA.
51. Stephen Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 17 Sep 1758, Cranston, RI. Notes:
BSR's ancestry chart says that Stephen was at Argyle, NY, in 1790 and at Litchfield, NY, in 1800.
52. Freelove Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 22 Jun 1760. Notes:
Boyd Scott Remington has this Freelove married to David Atwood. However, there may have been another Freelove, born to Thomas & Freelove (Nichols) Remington, in 1765. I have placed David Atwood with that individual, primarily because of the dates in the RI Cemetery Database. See marriage notes for the other Freelove Remington in this family tree.
53. Martha Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 22 Jun 1760. 54. Rhoby Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 8 Jan 1763. 55. Joseph Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 2 Nov 1764. 56. Benjamin Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 2 Nov 1764. Notes:
BSR says Benjamin was at Argyle, NY in 1800.
57. Sarah Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 28 Jul 1769, Cranston, RI. 58. Thomas Remington (16.Lippitt3, 5.Margaret2, 1.Thomas1) was born 19 Mar 1776.
