  1. 1.  Thomas REMINGTON was born 10 Sep 1760, South Kingstown, Washington County, RI; died Abt 4 Mar 1842, Tiverton, Newport Co, RI.

    Notes:

Thomas Remington of Tiverton was appointed to serve on the grand jury, along with Isaac Negus, for the November term 1797, to attend the Court of Common Pleas. (Tiverton Probate Records No 5 p 56)

Thomas served in the military during the Revolutionary War. He first enlisted at Tiverton in January 1777, and when he was discharged in March 1778, re-enlisted right away, and was subsequently discharged about a year later. During much of that time his company was encamped at Bristol and at Ft. Barton in Tiverton. He was in the action during the Battle of RI under General Sullivan.

In his deposition as part of the pension application in 1832, he said he had been born in South Kingstown, but that his family had moved to Tiverton when he was very young. After the war he returned to Tiverton, where he is most likely the other adult male in his father's household in 1790, which includes 2 free white males 16+, and one free white female -- probably his mother or a sister.

In 1832 he mentions that he is a neighbor of Job and Charles Durfee, Esquires. Thomas Remington is in the 1830 RI Census, residing in Tiverton (Newport County, p. 071). He is also there in 1840, and is listed as a Revolutionary War Pensioner, at age 79 1/2. However, he seems to be living alone at that time. Perhaps Alice is in ill health, and has gone to live with one of her children? She will pass away in 1848 at Dartmouth; their son Joseph and family are probably there in 1840, but appear in New Bedford by 1850. I have not yet found a date of death for Thomas, but apparently he died before Alice because she is described as his widow; also, since his last pension payment was in March 1842, he probably died in Feb or March of that year. "Thomas Remington residing in Tiverton collected a pension until March 2, 1842." (source for quote: George Sermuksnis, Archives Technician at Waltham National Archives).

On 7 September 1832, two friends/neighbors and fellow-Revolutionary-soldiers testified on his behalf; they were William Cook, and John Manchester, our ancestor.

Thomas Remington is on the list of persons who united with the Amicable Congregational Society, associated with the Amicable Congregational Church, Tiverton, RI. (ref: "The History of Amicable Congregational Church 1746 - 1946" p.83) He probably was buried from this church, but there were no death records kept for the church at this time. The location of his grave is unknown. I suspect he may be buried with his parents and their Brayton relatives, in one of the unknown gravesites in the family plot at Pleasant View Cemetery, Stone Church Rd., Tiverton, RI (formerly buried on a family farm and relocated to this cemetery).

Revolutionary War Pension file # S21938

He is listed on the Pension Roll of 1835: Remington, Thomas, private of Artillery, Newport county, all $90, rec $270, R.I. Cont. Line, pl July 9, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 74

In the 1840 Federal Census, Thomas is listed in Tiverton, RI, as a Revolutionary War Veteran/Pensioner age 79 and 1/2.

The list of Thomas and Alice's children came to me from a distant cousin in Michigan. This agreed with names I already had found in the New Bedford whaling crew lists and in marriage, census, and death records in RI and MA.

On 2 March 1791 Thomas Remington mariner of Tiverton received 250 in Spanish milled dollars from Thomas Barker of Tiverton, for the 13th 50-acre lot in the Pocasset Purchase, bounded easterly and westerly on highway, north by the 12th lot and south by the 14th lot. Witnessed by Joseph Barker and Abraham Barker. (Tiverton Deed Book 4)

See this note from cousin Russ Shaw (I am not sure if it pertains to this particular Thomas Remington, our ancestor, but it probably does):
"Last time I was at the RIHS archives I came across an interesting document that I think you may want to check on. It involves Thomas Remington and his son John. I found them both as crew members on the brig Eliza out of Bristol, bound for Trinidad de Cuba, 5 Jan 1818. Reference: MS 28,sg 2, Box 7 (1819-1820), Bristol Custom House records, RIHS."

Thomas married Alice "Elce" GRINNELL Abt 1793. Alice (daughter of Daniel GRINNELL and Sarah Unknown) was born Abt Mar 1777, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 1 Jan 1848, Dartmouth, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Mary Polly Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 18 May 1794, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 23 Sep 1866, Dartmouth, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

Polly and Molly were common nicknames for Mary in earlier centuries. The death record of Joseph Jr. names his parents as Joseph and Polly Rounds.

The death record of Mary Rounds says she was born in Tiverton, and names her parents as Thomas and Alice Remington (both born RI). She died at age 72y 4 m 5 d, of Erysipelas.

Mary — Joseph Rounds. Joseph (son of Alford Alfred Rounds and Sarah Fisher) was born 4 Mar 1785, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 6 Aug 1862, Dartmouth, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:

  2. 3.  Abigail "Abbie" Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 22 Jan 1796, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI.

    Notes:

I am making an assumption that she is the Abigail Remington who married Richard Swift on 2 December 1835 at New Bedford, MA.

An infant, William A. Swift, is buried in the Remington-Peirce family plot at Rural Cemetry in New Bedford, MA. I am entering him as a son of Richard & Abigail, subject to further research. I haven't found any other Swift connection to the family, other than the above marriage record.

Abigail married Richard Swift 2 Dec 1835, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 24. William R. Swift  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 9 Oct 1839; died 2 Jul 1841; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

  3. 4.  John Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 2 Jun 1797, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died Bef 1860.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me -- Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher -- and/or to other sources as noted herein.)

John Remington is the head of a household in the 1840 Federal Census at Tiverton. The family consists of 1 white male under 5, 1 white male 40-50, and 1 white female 30-40. They are listed next to Eseck Manchester's family and Benjamin Hambly, Jr.'s family. This Benjamin Hambly would be either the father or the brother of John's sister-in-law, Mary Anne (Hambly) Remington, who by this time was probably Benjamin's widow.

In the 1850 Federal Census at Tiverton, John Remington is age 50, and his wife Hannah is 40. They have four children: Albert 17, Lydia A. 9, Stephen 6, & Nathan 2. Hannah may be related to the Durfees, as there is a Hannah Remington age 51 living with a Durfee family in the 1860 census. If her daughter Lydia A. is the Alice Remington who married Amenezer James Durfee, that might explain the connection.

I haven't found a death record for John. Did he die at sea, as did his brother Benjamin?

John married Hannah Manchester Abt 1831. Hannah (daughter of William Manchester) was born Between 1807 and 1808, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 22 Mar 1877, Tiverton, RI; was buried , Pleasant View Cemetery, Stone Church Rd., Tiverton, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 25. Harriet Maria Remington  Descendancy chart to this point
    2. 26. Albert Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1835, Tiverton, RI; died 2 Sep 1862, At sea.
    3. 27. Lydia Alice Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1841, RI; died 30 May 1878, Tiverton, RI.
    4. 28. Stephen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Between 1844 and 1847, Tiverton, RI; died Between 1910 and 1920.
    5. 29. Nathan Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1848, RI; died Aft 1 Jan 1920.

  4. 5.  Joseph Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 26 Feb 1799, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 10 Aug 1855, New Bedford, Bristol Co., RI.

    Notes:

Joseph is not listed with Remingtons in the 1830 Federal Census at MA, so probably the family moved from RI to MA between 1830 and 1833.

In the 1840 Federal Census for Dartmouth, Bristol County, MA, there is a Joseph Remington as head of a household with 2 white males under age 5, 1 white male 5-10, 1 white male 40-50, 1 white female 5-10, 2 white females 10-15, and one white female 30-40. This is very likely our Joseph, but one of the older girls is missing in 1850 -- has either died or moved out.

In the 1850 Federal Census, New Bedford, MA, the family is on p. 345. The household includes: Joseph 50, Mary 43, Alice 23, Caroline 17, Edmund 15, Wm. S. 13, Jane C. 10 (should be James), Lucy J. 8, Emma 4, & Eleanor H. 2 mos.

In 1860 they are on p. 681, without Joseph.

The death record for Joseph identifies his parents as Thomas & Alice, and gives his birthplace as Tiverton, RI. He died at age 43 of a tumor. The place of death was 10 Bedford St.

Joseph married Mary Wood Coggeshall Abt 1826. Mary (daughter of Ichabod Coggeshall and Bathsheba Wood) was born Between 1807 and 1808, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 24 Mar 1888, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 30. Alice Grinnell Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1826, RI; died 1908; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.
    2. 31. Eliza A. B. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 20 Aug 1829, New Bedford, MA; died 25 Sep 1914, New Bedford, MA.
    3. 32. Caroline T. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1833, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
    4. 33. Edward Coggeshall Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Bet. 1835-1836, Dartmouth, MA; died bet. 1877 - 1897.
    5. 34. William S. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 18 Jan 1837, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA; died Aft 1 Jan 1920.
    6. 35. James C. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 16 Dec 1839, MA; died 13 Jan 1878, New Bedford, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.
    7. 36. Emma A. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Aby 1842, MA; died Aft 3 Mar 1920.
    8. 37. Lucy J. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 15 Jul 1846, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA; died 3 Mar 1920, New Bedford, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.
    9. 38. Eleanor H. "Ella" Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 6 Apr 1850, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA; died 11 Feb 1894, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA.

  5. 6.  Sarah "Sallie" Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 3 Jun 1800, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 9 Dec 1858, MA.

    Notes:

Sarah, of Thomas, received as a member of the Tiverton Baptist Church, 13 Aug 1820. (see Arnold's "Vital Record of RI" -- Church Records) Apparently her Aunt Mary had been baptized there also, in 1781.

I have made an assumption that the marriage entry for Sally & Henry is for this Sarah/Sallie. And, the death record for Sally R. Dedrick names her parents as Thomas and Alice Remington (see familysearch.org).

See notes for Henry. Complicating this is one additional difference: the records in New Bedford say that Henry married Sally Remington. The newspaper Columbian Centinal reported that Henry married Eliza Remington. I tend to believe the official record.

Sarah married Henry Y. Dedrick 14 Apr 1824, New Bedford, MA. Henry was born 1799, RI; died 4 Dec 1884, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 39. William H. Dedrick  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1825, New Bedford, MA; died 15 Apr 1893, New Bedford, MA.
    2. 40. Elizabeth S. Dedrick  Descendancy chart to this point was born Apr 1831, New Bedford, MA; died 3 Feb 1903, New Bedford, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.
    3. 41. Charles M. Dedrick  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1834, MA; died Aft 1880.

  6. 7.  Hope Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 19 Mar 1802, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 21 Jul 1842, New Bedford, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

Hope and her sister Phebe married two brothers.

Hope married David C. Peirce 26 Aug 1824, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. David (son of David Peirce and Lydia G. Gibbs) was born 3 Oct 1799, MA; died 24 Feb 1867; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 42. Thomas R. Peirce  Descendancy chart to this point was born 16 Sep 1827, New Bedford, MA; died 9 Dec 1894; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.
    2. 43. David B. Peirce  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1830, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.
    3. 44. Lydia A. Peirce  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 4 Aug 1835, MA; died 10 Jan 1879, Leominster, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

  7. 8.  Benjamin REMINGTON Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1804, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died Abt 1838, at sea.

    Notes:

Benjamin was a seaman whose name appears on the whaling crew lists at New Bedford Public Library. The information that he was lost at sea came from a descendant, Mrs. Vira Dodge of West Greenwich, and was transcribed in James N. Arnold's "Family Notes" Volume R, an unpublished manuscript located at the Knight Library in Providence, RI (now at Providence Public Library, main branch)

Whaling crew records at New Bedford provide information on some of the whaling voyages he went on. For instance, on 6 May 1820 he departed from New Bedford on the brig Juno, bound for the coast of Africa. The crew's master was Simeon Long, Jr. The roster says Benjamin was age 17, 5'7" tall, fair-skinned, had brown hair, and resided in Tiverton, RI.

On 21 April 1827 he left on the brig Parthian for a whaling voyage, "bound for the the Western Islands and elsewhere in the Atlantic Ocean." They returned on 7 June 1828. The crew's master was John J. (or T.) Parker. Benjamin was age 23, had a fair complexion and brown hair, and was 5' 8 1/2" in height. His residence was still Tiverton. Also on the crew list was Eseck Manchester, age 22, also from Tiverton.

A brig was a large seagoing vessel with two masts and square sails. They usually carried three boats, and were smaller than a ship or bark, which carried four or five whaleboats. The brig Juno was originally registered at New Bedford on 9 May 1818, and was re-registered a number of times after that, such as on 6 May 1820. The owners were: John A, Parker, merchant; Joseph Spooner, New Bedford; and Nathan Church, Fairhaven. As already noted above, the master for this voyage was Simeon Long, Jr.

The brig Parthian was built at Dartmouth, MA, in 1820, and was first registered on 19 April 1821. The vessel measured 119 35/95 tons, length 66 ft. 10 in., breadth 20 ft. 8 in., depth 10 ft. 1 in. When it was re-registered on 21 April 1827, the master was John J. Parker and the owners were Abraham Barker and James Russell of New Bedford.

From the records I have found, it looks as if the Parthinan went on ten voyages, beginning in 1821, then in 1834 the register was lost in a mutiny.

Although the family has passed down the information that Benjamin died at sea, we don't know the circumstances of his death -- whether from sickness, from the many dangers of whaling, or whatever.

Benjamin was not the only one of our family members on the Remington side to be a whaler. His brothers David and Abner also made voyages, possibly his brother John, and possibly his son John. There are numerous other Remingtons listed in New Bedford records as whalers, who may have been among his close or extended family.

(The information in the following two paragraphs is from "The Bounty of the Beast: Why Whales Were Hunted" on the web site of the New Bedford Free Library)

"Although many men died chasing whales, very few profited handsomely. Why, then, did they pursue these great creatures of the sea to the brink of extinction? The answer lies in the whale's enormous economic value. In 'Men and Whales,' Richard Ellis writes that, until the beginning of the twentieth century, whaling was considered an admirable occupation. '. . . it is only through the lens of hindsight that the whaleman's job becomes malicious or cruel . . . Oil was needed for light and lubrication; baleen was needed for skirt hoops and corset stays. That whales had to die to provide these things is a fact of seventeenth-, eighteenth-, and nineteenth-century life . . . ' "

Whale oil provided fuel for lighting, slow-burning and with no offensive odor. The oil was also used for clock making; lubricating many types of machinery; manufacturing of soaps, varnish, and paint; and producing special smokeless, odorless candles. The wax from sperm whales was also used in making face and hand creams and skin lotions. The baleen from whales was used in buggy whips, carriage springs, corset stays, fishing poles, hoops for women's skirts, umbrella ribs, and other such applications for which plastic or steel would now be used. A dark waxy substance called ambergris was used in cosmetics, wines, and as a headache remedy.

Many beautifully carved objects of both a practical and decorative use were made from whale bone. Examples of these works of art are on display at the Whaling Museum in New Bedford, a location maintained by the National Park Service.

When whaling ships returned to port, the profits were divided up among the ship's owners and the crew. Ordinary seamen were paid last and received the smallest percentage of the profits. Depending on the success of their voyage, their take-home pay could range from several hundred dollars to about ten dollars. Of course, they might also be taking home some beautiful objects they had carved from whalebone during the long hours, days, and months on the sea.

Benjamin married Mary Anne HAMBLY Abt 1831. Mary (daughter of Benjamin HAMBLY, III and Peace SHERMAN) was born 15 Feb 1811, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 1 Apr 1868, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 45. Benjamin Franklin REMINGTON  Descendancy chart to this point was born 17 Feb 1832, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 12 Aug 1903, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; was buried , Glenwood Cemetery, East Greenwich, RI.
    2. 46. John Hambly Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 10 Oct 1835, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 10 Jun 1852, at sea.

  8. 9.  Thomas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 28 May 1805, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 15 Apr 1860, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, Dartmouth Rd., New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

Thomas Remington, Jr., was baptized and became a member of the Amicable Church in Tiverton, RI, on 10 September 1820. (ref: see "The History of Amicable Congregational Church 1746 - 1946" p. 9s)

Thomas Remington, b. Tiverton, RI, went on at least one whaling voyage, according to seamen's insurance records at New Bedford Public Library. He may have been the ship's carpenter. On 7 Feb 1849 he was said to be age 42, with dark skin, light hair, and blue eyes, at a height of 5'6".

The birth years of Thomas & Rosetta's children have been estimated from their ages in the 1850 Federal Census, New Bedford, MA, p. 222. Three of the children -- Sarah, Thomas, & Rosetta -- were born in New York State, so apparently the family moved westward around 1832 but later came back to Massachusetts, around 1838/39.

Perhaps they were living near brother William in New York State, at Kingston, Ulster County or Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County. These counties are next to each other in the southeastern part of the state.

In the 1860 census, Rosetta, recently widowed, is living at New Bedford with some of the children. Sadly, Thomas died in April of that year, by drowning. His death record identifies his parents as Thomas & Alice, and his birthplace as Tiverton, RI.

Thomas & Rosetta are buried in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford; their gravestones have been photographed.
1805 REMINGTON Thomas, May 28, 1805, [on stone beside that of Rosetta] G.R.1. more Birth New Bedford

The following excerpt may well pertain to this particular Thomas, who was indeed a carpenter: "That the construction industry, which has led apprenticeship activities in this country in recent years, used the formalized indenture more than a century ago is shown by the indenture of a 'house carpenter' in 1832. This indenture bound a 16-year-old apprentice in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to his master until 1837 -- exactly 100 years before the enactment of the National Apprenticeship Law (Public Law 308, 75th Congress). The indenture states that John Slocum 'doth by these Presents bind Lyman Slocum, his son, a minor . . . to Thomas Remington . . . to learn the art, trade, or mystery of a House-Carpenter.' The master promised 'to teach and instruct, or cause the said Apprentice to be instructed, in the art, trade or calling of a House-Carpenter . . . (if said Apprentice be capable to learn.).' "

Thomas married Rosetta Slocum 1 Jun 1830, New Bedford, MA. Rosetta (daughter of John Slocum and Amy Sherman) was born 5 Sep 1811, Dartmouth, MA; died 27 Feb 1883; was buried , Rural Cemetery, Dartmouth Rd., New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

William came from a family of 14 siblings. Born in Rhode Island, he moved to New Bedford, MA, then to Dutchess County and Ulster County, NY. He came to Michigan from Kingston, NY, in 1835 with his wife Jane. His trip from New York State was by canal to Buffalo, then by boat to Detroit and by foot to Fenton. (Information from Thomas Lavery, a descendant)

In the 1860 Federal Census, William & Jane Remington are living at Fenton, Genesee Co., MI. They have three children: Edwin (Eben) 23, John 19, & Jane (Jennie) 16. Also with them is brother Abner Remington, 37, a sailor.

The 1870 census shows William at age 61 & his wife Jane living in the Village of Fenton, Genesee County, MI, with his extended family. In the household are Edward H. White & Eliza J. with their three children: Jessie A., Mabel P., & Edward H. Jr.; along with two domestic servants, a farm hand, and another man -- possibly a boarder or relative. Next door are John Remington (his son) with wife Emily and son Jay C. (see Roll 671 p. 1000 R Wm Remington; online census images)

In 1880 William is 71 and Jane is 72. They are still at Fenton, MI, living near and with family members.

The obituary in The Fenton Independent, 29 Apr 1897:
"William Remington, probably the oldest pioneer of this township, at his home in the northern part of the village. He was born in Tiverton, Rhode Island, in 1809, one of a family of 14 children, all of whom are dead but one brother, Abner, of Mundy. He with his wife, Jane Broadhead, came from Kingston, New York, in 1835, taking up land in a then unbroken wilderness on the banks of the Shiawassee. At one time he owned 500 acres of land, on which a good portion of Fenton now stands. Three children survive: Ebin and John of Fenton and Mrs. John Traver of Ft. Wayne, Indiana."

William married Jane Broadhead 16 Aug 1835, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY. Jane (daughter of John Brodhead) was born 20 Mar 1807, Ulster County, NY; died 20 May 1893, Fenton, Genesee County, MI; was buried 28 May 1893, Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton, MI. [Group Sheet]

  10. 11.  Ellery Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 12 May 1811, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 29 Aug 1876, Providence, Providence Co., RI.

    Notes:

Ellery & Lydia are in the 1850 Federal Census at New Bedford, p. 273, with two sons. In 1860, p. 832, their household includes son Charles, 15, and Hannah S. Hathaway, 31, a dressmaker. She may be Lydia's sister.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Ellery, Lydia, Charles, & Clara are living in Ward 5, Providence, RI. Perhaps Clara is Charles's wife (?).

Ellery's official death entry at Providence City Hall says he was born in Tiverton; died at 37 Claverick St., age 65y 5m 17d; gives the cause of death as disease of the spine; and identifies his parents as Thomas & Alice.

Ellery married Lydia Howland Hathaway 1 Apr 1844, New Bedford, MA. Lydia (daughter of Isaac Tobey Hathaway and Hannah S. Maxfield) was born 7 Apr 1822, Dartmouth, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Online whaling crew lists show David Remington, able seaman, going on a voyage 20 June 1842, ship Hibernia. Also listed twice is David G. Remington, on ship Persia 19 July 1843, a seaman; and on ship Golconda 23 Oct 1844, a cooper. In addition, microfilm lists show David, b. Tiverton, going out three times between 1829 and 1836. Is David G. "our" David? Most likely - and it looks as if he took a break to get married and conceive at least one child (marriage July 1839, child born Dec 1842).

The death record says he died at age 35, and gives his birthplace as Tiverton. The original death record (image online at newenglandancestors.org) does not name his parents. However, a microfilm record at New Bedford Public Library names his parents as David G. & Angeline Remington. That must be incorrect because clearly those are the names of him and his wife, as far as can be determined. It was probably a clerk's error, or informant's error. They were married in 1839, had one child, and then he died of consumption in 1849.

Other supporting evidence -- David Remington is listed for New Bedford in the 1840 census, with one male 20-30 and one female 20-30. He is not there in the 1850 census, but his wife and child are there -- Angeline & Mary C. Remington -- ages 29 and 7, living with H.(?) & Harriet Butler, along with an infant named John Sonchoe (?).

Further evidence is that David is buried in the same family plot in New Bedford as Alice (Grinnell) Remington and other family members.

There is a remote chance that there were two David Remingtons the same age who were New Bedford whalers at the same time -- but I will check further to eliminate that as a possibility. (So far no evidence of that.)

David married Angeline Slocum 11 Jul 1839, New Bedford, MA. Angeline (daughter of Waldo Slocum and Rhoby Smith) was born 15 Aug 1820, Dartmouth, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 59. Mary Cole Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 4 Dec 1842, New Bedford, MA; died 16 Oct 1884, New Bedford, MA.

  12. 13.  Phebe Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1815, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died Aft 1 May 1865; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

Phebe and her sister Hope married two brothers.

In the 1860 census, Phebe Pearce is age 45 RI, "widow" living in New Bedford. Also in the household are: Phebe J. 19 MA, Frank 16 MA, and Ella M. 14 MA; also Abner Remington 41 RI.

In the MA 1865 census, Seabury and Phebe are listed as together in New Bedford with daughter Ella in the household.

Phebe married Seabury Peirce 10 Dec 1834, New Bedford, MA. Seabury (son of David Peirce and Lydia G. Gibbs) was born 30 May 1812, New Bedford, MA; died 30 Mar 1873, Orange, VT; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:

    5. 64. Ella M. Peirce  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 May 1846, MA.

  13. 14.  Alice Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1817, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI.

  14. 15.  Abner Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 13 Mar 1820, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 6 Mar 1900, Fenton, Genesee County, MI; was buried , Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton, MI.

    Notes:

New Bedford files (seamen's insurance records) show that Abner Remington b. Tiverton, RI, applied for insurance three times: on 16 Dec 1840 he was age 21, 5'4", and said to have a light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes; on 22 Nov 1848 he was age 28, 5' 4 3/4" and was described as having a light complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes. Another record dated 2 Dec 1848 again shows him to be age 28, but is described as having dark skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. One can only speculate why there are two applications so close together, and why he is described differently, even though the age and birthplace are the same. Two of the descriptions more or less agree.

Abner's last voyage on record ended in 1860, so he must have headed out to Michigan right after that. In the 1860 Federal Census, he is age 37, a sailor, and living at Fenton, MI, with brother William and his family. He was married in Michigan in 1863, and he is in the 1870 census for Fenton, Genesee County, MI, with his wife Eliza and two youngest daughters, Minnie 6 & Alice 2, apparently living next door to his nephew Eben and family.

In the 1860 census, Abner is also listed at New Bedford, MA, living with sister Phebe Pearce and three of her children. The census gives his age as 41, b RI.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Abner, Eliza, and daughter Alice (the second Alice), 8, are living at Mundy, Genesee Co., MI. Also in the household are Thomas Steel, age 4, stepson; and John Hunt, 20.

His obituary in The Fenton Independent:
"Abner Remington, age 80, a resident of Fenton about 50 years, died 6 March 1900 at the home of his nephew, Ebin Remington. Born in New Bedford, MA, during young manhood he was a sailor, making several trips to the whaling grounds. After retiring from the sea, he came to Fenton and purchased a farm in Mundy."

One genealogy at Rootsweb has his date of birth as 13 March 1820 (re: Kim Hawkins).

Abner married Eliza A. Bennett 18 Feb 1863, Flint, Genessee County, MI. Eliza (daughter of Charles Bennett and Caroline Thurston) was born 4 Oct 1845, Ohio; died 5 Sep 1896, Mundy Township, Genesee County, MI; was buried , Oakwood Cemetery, Fenton, MI. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 3

  1. 16.  Joseph Rounds, Jr. Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Thomas1) was born 24 Jan 1812, MA or RI; died 7 Jan 1869, Rehoboth, Bristol Co., MA.

    Notes:

Joseph's death record says he died at age 56y 11 m 14d, and names his parents as Joseph and Polly.

In the 1840 census Joseph and family are at Dartmouth, MA: 1 FWM 5-9, 1 FWM 20-29, 1 FWF <5, 1 FWF 20-29. One individual is "employed in the navigation of the ocean." I am assuming this family group included the first wife, Maria Hazard.

In the 1850 census, the Joseph Rounds family is at Rehoboth, MA: Joseph 38 MA, Elisabeth 29 MA. Herbert F. 5 MA, Eugene B. 3 MA, Julia A. 10 mos.

In the 1855 MA state census, the household at Rehoboth includes: Joseph 43, Elizabeth A. 31, Herbert A. 11, Eugene B. 9, Julia A. 6; also with them or next to them are Simeon and Nancy Rounds, ages 73 and 63. I have determined that this Simeon (1782-1860) is likely a son of Simeon (1755-1831, s/o Jabez and Renew) and Anna Rounds. It seems that Simeon Jr. was married two or three times, his first wife being Clarissa, by whom he had at least 5 daughters and two sons, one being Marcus T. Rounds b1805, the executor of Simeon's estate. The probate documents mention that his family property borders on that of Joseph Rounds in Rehoboth. However, I haven't found a close family connection, and I haven't researched Jabez yet.

Joseph married Maria M. Hazard 27 Apr 1834, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA. Maria (daughter of Henry Hazard and Betsey Unknown) was born Abt 1819, CT; died Aft Jun 1855. [Group Sheet]

  2. 17.  Son Rounds Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1814, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died Bef 1830.

    Notes:

There are three sons under age 10 in the 1820 census. I don't know the name of this one. In 1830 there are two sons age 15-19, so probably this one died.

  3. 18.  John Rounds Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1816, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died Aft Apr 1876.

    Notes:

In the federal census of 1850, the household at New Bedford is as follows: Henry Hazard 70 RI farmer, George W. Hazard 37 RI laborer, Maria Rounds 31 CT, George W. Rounds 15 MA sailor, Emeline Rounds 27 CT, John Rounds 39 MA sailor.

In 1860, the household at New Bedford is as follows: John Rounds 43 MA Master Mariner, Emeline Rounds 38 MA, John Rounds Jr. 19 MA Seaman, Henry Hazzard 73 CT Laborer, George W. Hazzard 45 CT Blind, Charles Sherman 14 MA.

In the 1865 MA State census, they are at New Bedford as follows: John Rounds 50 RI, Emeline S? Rounds 43 CT, John H. Rounds 23 MA, Phebe Rounds 19 MA, and 7 other individuals at least some of who are Emeline's relatives, including her father Henry Hazard 86 RI and her brother George W. Hazard 52 CT.

In 1870, they are still in New Bedford: John Rounds 55 RI Farm Laborer, Emeline 47 CT Keeping House, George W. Hazard 57 RI Laborer, Blind.

The marriage record for John's second marriage names his parents as Joseph & Mary.

John married Emeline Hazard 24 Jan 1841, Dartmouth, Bristol Co., MA. Emeline (daughter of Henry Hazard and Betsey Unknown) was born Abt 1823, Norwich, CT; died Aft Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 74. John Rounds, Jr.  Descendancy chart to this point

John married Emily M. Chase 17 Apr 1876, New Bedford, MA. Emily (daughter of Allen Chase and Welthy Unknown) was born Abt 1840, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

  4. 19.  Mary A. Rounds Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt Sep 1818, RI; died 20 Mar 1879, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

In the 1870 Federal Census, Mary A. Rounds 49 RI and Abby E. Rounds 42 MA are living in Dartmouth, MA. Mary is keeping house and Abby is sewing.

Mary died of cancer at age 60 y 6 m; the death record at New Bedford names her parents as Joseph and Mary.

  5. 20.  Sarah A. Rounds Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Thomas1) was born Between 1821 and 1825.

    Notes:

In the 1830 census, there is one daughter under age 5, and one age 10-14, who would have been Mary.

Sarah — Godfrey R. Tripp. [Group Sheet]

  6. 21.  Abby E. Rounds Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1830, MA; died 11 Dec 1889, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

In the 1870 Federal Census, Mary A. Rounds 49 RI and Abby E. Rounds 42 MA are living in Dartmouth, MA. Mary is keeping house and Abby is sewing.

In the Federal Census of 1880 Abby Rounds is age 52 MA, housekeeper, living in Dartmouth with Alden Reed and family.

Abbie E. Rounds died at age 61 of cardiac disease. The death record says she was born in New Bedford. Her parents are identified as Joseph and Mary Rounds, born Tiverton.

  7. 22.  Charles Andrew Rounds Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1831, MA; died 6 Aug 1883, Suva, Fiji.

    Notes:

A probate document (found online by Dulcie Stewart) for Joseph Rounds has confirmed my assumption that Andrew C. is truly Charles A. in this family, and that he is the individual who sailed from New Bedford and settled in Fiji 1850-1851. See explanation and details below.

An Andrew Rounds went on a whaling voyage in 1847. In the 1850 census at Dartmouth, MA, Andrew is age 19 and a sailor, living with his parents Joseph and Mary.

Charles A. Rounds age 14, greenhand, hometown Dartmouth, sailed from New Bedford on the ship Canton on 28 June 1845, headed for the Indian Ocean and due to return in 1847. Charles A. is the same individual as Andrew who was born 1831, son of Joseph and Mary. Andrew is back in the 1850 census as mentioned above but disappears from all records after that. Occupation is given as sailor.

By his own sworn testimony Charles Rounds settled in Fiji sometime around 1851; he married there in 1856. DNA shows a match between me and Charles's descendants, and this is the only family I know of that could be the link. Apparently at some point he went by his middle name, Andrew, but for some reason was simply known as Charles in Fiji.

It appears that Charles visited Fiji in June 1846 on an early voyage; he was back home in time for a voyage in 1847 and returned home again to be in the 1850 census. It must have been shortly after this that he went on another voyage, returning to Fiji in 1851 to settle there.

A note concerning his death on 6 Aug 1883 at Suva says he was Charles Rounds of Taunton, MA. I have checked the censuses for Rounds families in Taunton. In 1840 there were two families who had young boys: Marcus T. Round and Andrew Round. In 1850 these two families were still in Taunton; Marcus's son Charles A. Rounds was born c1833 and he is still in the 1855 MA State census and is listed in the Civil War at age 30, so he cannot be the one who went to Fiji. Andrew Round is Andre Rounds in 1850 and his son is a junior born c1838; he marries in New Bedford in 1859; so those families were eliminated as possibilities.

Why did he never use a middle initial in Fiji? Another thought is that he went to live with relatives and that's why he is not in the 1840 census with his siblings. There were several households of their relatives living in both Dartmouth and New Bedford. I did receive his death certificate from Dulcie which lists his children, including a Joseph and Josephine, which is interesting to me as so often family names were used for the children. William, Thomas, and John are also family names, but these can be fairly common.

I found a brief reference to Charles in a book at Google Books online; the title is "Native American Whalemen and the World . . ." by Nancy Shoemaker, p 135. It mentions that Charles Rounds of New Bedford was reimbursed the $155 due him from the people of Kadavu.

All of the following notes are from Dulcie Stewart's blog: https://fragmentedidentities.wordpress.com/2009/07/15/a-new-day/

"I then emailed the US National Archives-Northeast Region, Waltham, MA and they were able to provide me with the following information from Crew List complied 1820-1939:"

    Name: Charles A. Rounds
    Ship: CANTON
    Place of birth: Dartmouth, MASS.
Place of residence: New Bedford, MASS.
    Citizen of the US
    age 14, height 5' 1
Departure date was July 28, 1845

"The Canton arrived in Fiji June 29, 1846 (Robert Langdon, 1984) and in Australia July 20, 1846 (NSW Archives)."

"According to John Young (1984) Charles Rounds arrived in Fiji in 1851, his source was the Land Claims Commission 1875-1887."

"Charles Rounds was the first Rounds in Fiji. He arrived April 1851 on a whaling vessel from New Bedford, Massachusetts, United States. He married Fanny Pickering, daughter of Charles Pickering and Burekovia Tabuakovei of Burebasaga Village, Rewa."

    From Dulcie's email:
Charles Rounds arrived in Fiji in April 1851 (Fiji Land Claims Rehearing: No. 23 Toga Island, 4th January 1878). He died 6 August 1883 in Suva and was reported by William Henry Bruce to the US Secretary of State that Charles was from Taunton (Consular Despatches, No. 11).

However on Charles death certificate (attached), his place of birth given is New Bedford, and on his son's birth certificate (John Round born 2 July 1878) he was listed as being 46 (so born about 1832) and from New Bedford.

Charles married Fanny Vani Pickering 1856, Rewa, Fiji. Fanny was born Abt. 1842, Fiji; died 26 Apr 1881, Tovutovu, Fiji. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 75. Charles Rounds  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt. 1858, Fiji.

    3. 77. Josephine Rounds  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt. 1867, Fiji.

  8. 23.  David C. Rounds Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Thomas1) was born 19 Sep 1836, MA; died 18 Dec 1911, St. Louis, Gratiot Co., MI; was buried , Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Louis, MI.

    Notes:

In the 1860 census, David is age 23, still living with his parents in Dartmouth, MA.

It appears that David had a very brief first marriage, as there are two marriage records less than a year apart. It is almost certain that it is the same individual, David C. Rounds. Before the first marriage, his first wife was living with David's uncle, William Remington, and family in Fenton, MI. Obviously David left MA and went to MI where two of his mother's brothers had settled.

Marriage to David Rounds was a second marriage for Sarah (Fox) Cornell.

In the federal census of 1910, David C. and Sarah B. Rounds are living in St. Louis, MI.

From findagrave.com -- "Death certificate shows David C. Informant Mrs. Sarah B. Rounds of St. Louis. No date of burial given, burial place St. Louis, Michigan."

David married Matilda McKenna 22 Aug 1870, Fenton, Genessee Co., MI. Matilda was born Abt 1840, NY. [Group Sheet]

David married Sarah V. Fox 4 Jun 1871, Bethany, Gratiot Co., MI. Sarah (daughter of Bernard Fox and Durinda Kennedy) was born 9 Aug 1841, Steuben, NY; died 6 Feb 1930, Ingham, Leslie Co., MI; was buried , Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Louis, MI. [Group Sheet]

  9. 24.  William R. Swift Descendancy chart to this point (3.Abigail2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 9 Oct 1839; died 2 Jul 1841; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

  10. 25.  Harriet Maria Remington Descendancy chart to this point (4.John2, 1.Thomas1)

  11. 26.  Albert Remington Descendancy chart to this point (4.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1835, Tiverton, RI; died 2 Sep 1862, At sea.

    Notes:

According to Tiverton probate records, Albert died in the service of the US Navy.

  12. 27.  Lydia Alice Remington Descendancy chart to this point (4.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1841, RI; died 30 May 1878, Tiverton, RI.

    Notes:

I am making an assumption that Lydia's middle initial "A" stood for Alice, and that she was known by that name. The Durfee genealogy book shows an Alice Remington, born to John & Hannah about this year, who married Amanezer James Durfee (see book The Descendants of Thomas Durfee, p. 352, by William Field Reed).

In my research at New Bedford I jotted down the date of death for an Alice (Remington) Durfee, 30 May 1878 at Tiverton, age 37 (don't have source noted). This seems to be this individual.

Alice Remington became guardian for Nathan & Harriet Remington after the death of both John & Albert.

Lydia married Amanezer James Durfee Aft Mar 1873. Amanezer was born 15 Jul 1823, Tiverton, RI; died 18 Dec 1891, Fall River, MA. [Group Sheet]

  13. 28.  Stephen Remington Descendancy chart to this point (4.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born Between 1844 and 1847, Tiverton, RI; died Between 1910 and 1920.

    Notes:

Stephen is in the 1850 census at Tiverton living with his family. In the 1860 census he is age 14, and living at Little Compton with Benjamin Pearce the elder and his wife.

In the 1870 census, Stephen is age 22, a farm laborer, living at Tiverton with the Gideon Durfee family, next door to Amanezer & Olive Durfee.

The Roll of Militia in Tiverton, located at the town hall, lists Stephen Remington for the years 1871, 1872, 1873, and 1874. Also listed for 1872 is Henry H. Remington, who is probably Henry Hale, a distant cousin.

There is a marriage record for him at Newport -- NeM 1-131; I haven't checked it yet.

He is very likely the Stephen Remington aged 67 living at Fall River in 1910, with a wife named Elizabeth aged 60 and an adult daughter Minerva, aged 38. Living with them is brother-in-law Albion Grinnell, 51. By 1920 Elizabeth is widowed. I believe she is Elizabeth Grinnell, so I have entered her family information as such, with the assumption that she belongs as the wife of this Stephen Remington.

Stephen — Elizabeth D. Grinnell. Elizabeth (daughter of George Grinnell and Judith Unknown) was born Abt 1844, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1920. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 82. Minerva G. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1872, MA; died Aft 1 Apr 1930.

  14. 29.  Nathan Remington Descendancy chart to this point (4.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1848, RI; died Aft 1 Jan 1920.

    Notes:

In the 1850 census Nathan is living with his family at Tiverton, RI. In the 1860 census, he is living at Little Compton with the Dyer family. In 1900 he is boarding with the George A. Green family at Tiverton, RI.

In 1920 it appears that he is the Nathan Remington, aged 73 RI, single and living in the New Bedford city almshouse. It does not state whether he has any handicap, although it says he can read and write.

  15. 30.  Alice Grinnell Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1826, RI; died 1908; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

In the 1870 Federal Census, Alice Remington is age 40, a tailoress, living at New Bedford with her mother and two sisters.

According to the marriage record at New Bedford, Alice was 47 when she married George. That gives her a birth of c1828. The marriage record gives her middle initial as G, and I am making an assumption that it is Grinnell.

Alice married George Snow 6 May 1875, New Bedford, MA. George was born Abt 1818, Middleboro, MA; died 1904; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

  16. 31.  Eliza A. B. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born 20 Aug 1829, New Bedford, MA; died 25 Sep 1914, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

Eliza's death record identifies her parents as Joseph and Mary W. (Coggeshall) Remington and also gives her date of birth.

    Eliza died of an intestinal obstruction at age 85 y 1 m 5 d.

Eliza married Edward Wood 17 Jul 1851, MA. Edward was born Abt 1820, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 83. William H. Wood  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1852, MA.
    2. 84. Harry B. Wood  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1855, MA.

  17. 32.  Caroline T. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1833, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.

Caroline married Jonathan Howland, Jr. Abt 1854. Jonathan (son of Jonathan Howland, Sr. and Elizabeth Cross) was born 13 Mar 1831, New Bedford, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 85. Sarah Eliza Howland  Descendancy chart to this point was born 14 Mar 1855, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.

  18. 33.  Edward Coggeshall Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born Bet. 1835-1836, Dartmouth, MA; died bet. 1877 - 1897.

    Notes:

His name may have been Edward.

New Bedford whaling files (seamen's insurance records) show an Edward Remington, age 12, b. Dartmouth, MA, who went on a voyage 19 May 1847. The age and birthplace could easily match Joseph's son "Edmund." It says he was 4'10" and had a light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes.

In the Federal Census of 1850, there is an Edmund C. Remington, age 35 MA, living at Reading, Hillsdale Co., MI. He is a carpenter. This could be the son of Joseph & Mary.

Edward married Susan A. Smith 31 Oct 1865, Edgartown, MA. Susan (daughter of Holmes Wass Smith and Sophia Coffin) was born Abt. 1839, Edgartown, Dukes Co.,. MA; died 29 Sep 1897. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 86. Holmes Smith Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 18 Jan 1878, Edgartown, MA; died 5 Aug 1878, New Bedford, MA.

  19. 34.  William S. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born 18 Jan 1837, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA; died Aft 1 Jan 1920.

    Notes:

Apparently William also sailed the seas. The records at New Bedford have a William S. Remington, age 22 on 24 Sep 1859, described as born in New Bedford, 5'8 1/2" with light skin, light hair, and blue eyes.

In 1870, William & Martha are living at Fall River, MA. Their ages are given as 32 & 42. With them are three teenagers, surname Valentine, probably Martha's children from a previous marriage: Jefferson B. 17, Jessie B. 17, & Ella C. 13, all b MA; also Eliza Waterhouse, age 64 Maine, probably Martha's mother.

In 1900, William Remington, age 50 (born Feb 1849), is living at New Bedford, MA, with a wife named Minnie J., age 40 (born June 1859). This may be the same William, even though the age is off considerably.

In 1910, William S. Remington, age 60, is living at New Bedford, MA, with a "second" wife, Linette (?name illegible?), b MA, parents b in England. The wife may be Minnie, as above.

He probably is the William S. Remington, age 70 and widowed, living at New Bedford, MA, in the 1920 Federal Census. It says he was born in MA, and both parents were born in RI. However, the age is off considerably.

In the 1900 Federal Census, there is a couple living at VT, which looks like William & Martha, but the birth dates are off: William Remington, b Oct 1834 MA, parents b RI & MA; Martha A. Remington, b Jul 1839 VT, parents b VT. This couple is also in the 1880 census at Craftsbury, Orleans Co., VT, with a daughter named Flora E., age 10; they are living with an older couple named Mulford. In 1910 they are still at Craftsbury, VT. They appear to be William & Martha of New Bedford except for two differences: Martha's birthplace, given in the censuses as VT, but in the marriage record as ME; also, the marriage record has her maiden name as Waterhouse, but in 1880 they are living with the Mulford & Clarisa Eldridg, and Martha is listed as their daughter. (this family needs more research)

    See notes for Martha.

William married Martha A. Waterhouse 20 Nov 1866, Bristol Co., MA. Martha (daughter of Charles Waterhouse and Eliza Unknown) was born Abt 1827, Brunswick, ME; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

  20. 35.  James C. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born 16 Dec 1839, MA; died 13 Jan 1878, New Bedford, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

James C. Remington applied for seaman's insurance on 20 June 1856. At that time he was said to be age 16, born in New Bedford, 5', and with light complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes.

Remington, James C.; New Bedford 1878; Vol 301 p 115 - Death; the record identifies his parents as Joseph and Mary W. He died at age 37 of Dropsey, occupation Mariner.

  21. 36.  Emma A. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born Aby 1842, MA; died Aft 3 Mar 1920.

    Notes:

Emma is age 4 in the 1850 census. However, I think her name and Lucy's may have been listed out of order, because Lucy's birth record says she was born in 1846, but in the census she is age 8.

Emma was the informant at the time of her sister Lucy's death in 1920.

  22. 37.  Lucy J. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born 15 Jul 1846, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA; died 3 Mar 1920, New Bedford, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

Lucy is a school teacher at New Bedford in 1880, living with her mother Mary and sister Ella.

She died at age 75 of Aortic Obstruction, contributing factor rheumatoid arthritis; death location 221 Middle St., New Bedford; occupation, retired teacher.

  23. 38.  Eleanor H. "Ella" Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born 6 Apr 1850, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA; died 11 Feb 1894, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA.

    Notes:

In the 1850 census Eleanor was two months old. According to her birth record, she was born on Dartmouth St.

In the 1880 Federal Census at New Bedford, she is listed as Ella H. Remington, age 28, at home (with mother and sister Lucy).

Eleanor died at age 43 of bronchitis and tuberculosis. she was single.

I believe she is the one who sent the list of Alice (Grinnell) Remington's 14 children to the relatives in Michigan. I have a copy of that list.

  24. 39.  William H. Dedrick Descendancy chart to this point (6.Sarah2, 1.Thomas1) was born 1825, New Bedford, MA; died 15 Apr 1893, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

The 1860 census has his name as William D. Dedrick.

William & Luvana are living at New Bedford, MA, in the 1880 US Census, with her father Elisha.

William — Luvana Reynolds. Luvana (daughter of Elisha Reynolds) was born Abt 1845, MA; died Aft 1880. [Group Sheet]

  25. 40.  Elizabeth S. Dedrick Descendancy chart to this point (6.Sarah2, 1.Thomas1) was born Apr 1831, New Bedford, MA; died 3 Feb 1903, New Bedford, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

Elizabeth married Job M. Terry 5 May 1850, New Bedford, MA. Job was born 1825; died 1882; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

  26. 41.  Charles M. Dedrick Descendancy chart to this point (6.Sarah2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1834, MA; died Aft 1880.

    Notes:

Charles & Lucy are living at New Bedford, MA, in the 1880 US Census.

Charles — Lucy A. Unknown. Lucy was born Abt 1834, MA; died Aft 1880. [Group Sheet]

  27. 42.  Thomas R. Peirce Descendancy chart to this point (7.Hope2, 1.Thomas1) was born 16 Sep 1827, New Bedford, MA; died 9 Dec 1894; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

His middle name was probably Remington. He may have married his stepsister or other relative of his stepmother, Maria Fuller. His family, including wife, daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, are at New Bedford in the 1880 Federal Census.

Thomas married Lucy B. Fuller 1 Jan 1851. Lucy was born 12 Feb 1832, MA; died 17 May 1903; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 87. Maria J. Peirce  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 30 Oct 1851, MA; died 3 Oct 1931; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

  28. 43.  David B. Peirce Descendancy chart to this point (7.Hope2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1830, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.

    Notes:

David is age 20 in the 1850 Federal Census at New Bedford, and living with his family (which includes his stepmother). In the 1880 US Census, there is a David P. Pierce living in California, a miner, born 1830 MA, widowed. Could this be the same individual?

  29. 44.  Lydia A. Peirce Descendancy chart to this point (7.Hope2, 1.Thomas1) was born Abt 4 Aug 1835, MA; died 10 Jan 1879, Leominster, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

Lydia age is given as 18 in the 1850 Federal Census at New Bedford, where she is living with her family (which at that time includes her stepmother). However, if the age on her gravestone is correct, she would have been not quite 15 at the time of the census in 1850.

She is the Lydia A. Boyle who is buried in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, next to David & Hope Peirce. She died at age 43 y 5 m 6 d, and is buried with a 10-month-old "babe" named Hope Ann Davis. Is this her child?

    Lydia A. Boyle died at age 43 y 5 m 6 d of Paralysis.

Lydia married James Boyle 1 Jan 1869, Worcester, MA. James was born Abt 1840. [Group Sheet]

  30. 45.  Benjamin Franklin REMINGTONBenjamin Franklin REMINGTON Descendancy chart to this point (8.Benjamin2, 1.Thomas1) was born 17 Feb 1832, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 12 Aug 1903, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; was buried , Glenwood Cemetery, East Greenwich, RI.

    Notes:

Benjamin's birth record is noted as:
REMINGTON, Benjamin F., of Benjamin and Mary, b. 1831 Ti (TiM 1-5)

I have a photocopy of his official death certificate from Tiverton, RI. In addition, I have copies of the family group in the 1860 and 1870 censuses at "Old Warwick" and in the 1880 census at Coventry.

In the 1865 RI State Census, the family is at Warwick. They have six children.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Benjamin & Adeline are living at Old Warwick. They have eight children.

In 1875 the family is in Warwick, still in he section known as Old Warwick. There are 10 children, ranging in age from 2 to 20.

In 1880 Benjamin & "Adelaid" are in Coventry. Seven of their children are in the household.

Benjamin & Adeline lived in Tiverton, Old Warwick/Warwick Neck, Coventry, West Greenwich, and probably East Greenwich. Benjamin's signature is on the West Greenwich voting lists, Burton District, for 1885 to 1888. This record gives his date of birth as 13 Feb 1832, and his birthplace as Tiverton, RI. The Burton District, sometimes referred to as the Button District, was located in the northeastern corner of West Greenwich, in the the area between Carrs Pond and Lake Mishnock where Division Rd., Hopkins Hill Rd., and New London Turnpike intersect. I am not sure exactly where in this area my ancestors lived during these years.

Benjamin's middle name was probably Franklin, although no official document has been found giving the full name. Benjamin is in the 1850 Federal Census at Tiverton, listed with the household of his maternal grandparents, Deacon Benjamin and Peace Hambly, along with his mother, his brother John, and other individuals.

It seems as if he and Adeline named several of their children after relatives, such as Mary Anna, Peace H., David Thomas, Charles Abner, Joseph Ellery, John, and George, as well as after notable American or RI leaders. There is the obvious Benjamin Franklin, probably named after his father and great uncle, as well as the statesman and his maternal grandfather Benjamin. James DeWolf Remington may have been named after James DeWolf (1764-1837), a prominent merchant, shipowner, and manufacturer from Bristol, who was very prosperous in slave trading; but after this was halted by the War of 1812, sponsored a privateer that captured millions of dollars worth of goods from British ships. In 1821, the RI General Assembly chose him to be US Senator. In the words of Patrick T. Conley, "In 1837, after a full life as a lawbreaker and lawmaker, he died on his elegant 1,000-acre Bristol estate."

Cousin Barbara Shaw gave Dad Remington pictures of Adeline and Benjamin. On the back of his she wrote Benjamin Franklin Remington, so if accurate this means he gave one of his sons the same name. The portrait shows him dressed in a three-piece suit. He seems to have had brown hair -- parted on the side, slicked back, and cut below the ears -- and a full beard. His face shows classic features, with light eyes -- possibly blue or gray. I try to see my children, cousins, aunts or uncles in his face. Maybe . . .

Benjamin married Adeline Tripp MANCHESTER 12 Dec 1852, The Amicable Congregational Church, Tiverton, RI. Adeline (daughter of Jeremiah A. MANCHESTER and Mary H. DENNIS) was born 7 Jun 1835, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 10 May 1893, East Greenwich, RI; was buried , Glenwood Cemetery, East Greenwich, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

John H. took to the sea as did his father, uncles, and some of his cousins. He is recorded as going on a whaling voyage in 1851/52, but I need to check the microfilm to be sure it is he. If so, this may be the voyage on which he died at sea.

  32. 47.  Lysander F. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.Thomas2, 1.Thomas1) was born 17 May 1831, MA; died 27 Sep 1880; was buried , Rural Cemetery, Dartmouth Rd., New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1870, Lysander Remington, 36 MA, is living at East Boston, MA, working for a sparmaker.

  33. 48.  Sarah Amanda Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.Thomas2, 1.Thomas1) was born 22 Sep 1832, NY; died 18 Feb 1889; was buried , Rural Cemetery, Dartmouth Rd., New Bedford, MA.

    Notes:

According to the marriage record, Sarah A. Remington, d/o Thomas & Rosetta, was age 18 when she married Gideon in 1857. This would make her birth year c1838, which does not agree with census data. For example, in 1860 her age is given as 28.

Sarah married Gideon C. Hoxsie 19 Feb 1857, New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. Gideon (son of John Hoxsie and Sarah Coggeshall) was born 19 Dec 1820, Little Compton, RI or New Bedford, MA; died 24 Nov 1888; was buried , Rural Cemetery, Dartmouth Rd., New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 100. Frank C. Hoxsie  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt Nov 1857, MA; died Aft 15 Apr 1910.
    2. 101. Herbert Hoxsie  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1867, MA.
    3. 102. William Remington Hoxsie  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1868, New Bedford, MA; died 23 Apr 1936, Westport, MA; was buried , Rural Cemetery, Dartmouth Rd., New Bedford, MA.

  34. 49.  Thomas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.Thomas2, 1.Thomas1) was born 17 Feb 1835, NY; died 16 Dec 1915, Dallas, TX; was buried , Oakland Cemetery, Dallas, TX.

    Notes:

Thomas may have followed in his father's and his uncles' footsteps to sail the seas. The whaling records at New Bedford show a Thomas Remington who twice applied for seamen's insurance. Both times he is described as born in New Bedford, however, not NY. Perhaps, since he was young when the family returned from NY, he was brought up in Massachusetts and considered himself a New Bedford native. On the other hand, this could be a different individual -- but the dates coincide with his age as we know it from the census. On 9 Nov 1853 he was age 18, 5'6", and had light skin, light hair, and blue eyes. On 18 June 1858 he was age 22, 5'6 1/2", and had dark skin, brown hair, and blue eyes. He seems to be taking after his dad in looks and height, too.

Quote from Tim Remington, after visiting Michigan:
"There is a house that is still standing that was the home of John Broadhead Remington (our great grandfather). He built it using bricks he made in his brickyard. We have pictures of it and also a millstone that was used in 1840. We visited the historical museum in the afternoon and the folks there were great. They delighted in showing us the history they found of our relatives and put together a packet of information for us. They also showed us a brick that came from John Broadhead Remington's brickyard and it had the initials "JR" engraved in it. I understand that stamping initials into the bricks was typical of the bricks built in those days."

In the 1870 Federal Census, Charles & Clara are ages 25 & 20, living with his parents, Ellery & Lydia, in Ward 5, Providence, RI. Charles's middle initial appears to be F.

By 1880 Ellery has died. In the census Charles's age is given as 32, and Clara is 26. They are boarding in the home of Margaret Arnold at 180 High St., District 29, Providence, RI. Coincidentally, Jeremiah & Hannah Remington are also there, with their daughter and grandson. However, they are not closely related to Charles's family.

    Notes:

Edward W. is listed in the 1850 Federal Census as age 6 months. Therefore, even though the published birth records show him to be born in 1850, he must have been born in 1849. The only other possibility is that there was an infant who died, and a second son was given the same name.

New Bedford VRs show his dob as 20 Dec 1849.

    Notes:

Pictures of Alice and some information on her family and her life were provided by Tom Lavery and Patricia (Borst) Brewer, two of our cousins in Michigan.

    My research notes:
In the 1900 Federal Census, John & Alice Borst are living at Gaines, Genesee Co., MI. With them are Sumner Hunter, 13, Alice's son by her first marriage; Mildred White, 10, Alice's daughter by her second marriage; and Gladys Borst, 10 months, daughter of John & Alice. According to the census data, John & Alice have been married 7 years. For some reason, Shirley Borst, age 7, born Jan 1893, is living with a family nearby; the census says she is "A. daughter" -- suggesting adopted daughter. It says she was born in MI, and her parents were born in Ireland & Germany. I cannot read the family name she is with (possibly begins with W), although the wife is Sarah and the 6-year-old son is Arthur.

In 1910, John C. & Allie Borst are living at Flint, Genesee Co., MI. With them are children Shirley, Gladys, Hugh, & Fenton. According to the census data, Alice has had 6 children, and 5 are living at that time.

In 1920 John C. & Allie G. Borst, ages 56 & 49, are living on Flushing Rd., Flint, Genesee Co., MI. With them are the following children: Hugh G. 16, Fenton R. 11, & Cecil J. 2 (adopted son). (Is Cecil J. the son also called James, or was James a son who died young?)

In 1930, John C. & Alice G. Borst are living on Farley St., Flint, Genesee Co., MI. With them are sons Fenton R. & Cecil J., ages 20 & 12.

In the Federal Census of 1860, she probably is the Amelia Remington age 13 living at Warwick, RI (Old Warwick Post Office), as a domestic servant in the household of William Warner, age 69. However, Amelia M. Remington age 13 is also listed with her family at Old Warwick in that census.

    Notes:

I have a copy of his birth certificate from Warwick, RI (Warwick Births, 1850 - 1882, Vol. 2, p. 5); a copy of his official marriage record from the RI State Offices in Providence, as well as the original page from the Town of Coventry marriage record book, p. 89; and his death certificate from Cranston, RI.

The 1880 census lists John A. Remington as age 12 at that time. I have a copy of the page from the census showing his family.

We have a nice portrait of John Allen dressed in his best suit, with a boutonnierre pinned to his right lapel. Perhaps it was a graduation picture, or even a wedding picture, as he was married quite young the first time -- not yet nineteen. His brown hair is neatly parted in the center and combed with a slight wave to either side. He has light eyes, like his father's, and fine regular features in an oval face. I definitely see a bit of his looks in our family, especially my uncles and my dad's cousins. We never knew much about my Great-grandfather Remington; things were left unsaid. His first wife died young of consumption, after only 1 1/2 years of marriage, which must have brought him much grief. Perhaps he took up drinking to cope with the sorrow, and then couldn't get away from it, even after marrying Angeretta, with whom he had two fine sons. For some reason they separated. He died so young, only 28 years old, of some form of cancer, according to the death certificate. I guess the whole story will never be known, so we've left it in God's hands.

John married Mary Wilson 26 Oct 1885, Coventry, RI. Mary (daughter of John A. Wilson and Jane Unknown) was born Oct 1867, Pennsylvania; died 11 Apr 1887. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

An online genealogy at Rootsweb has his first name as Jacob, but that is incorrect. It comes from the 1920 Federal Census, but must be a census-taker's error. That year J. Clifford & Hattie are living at Fenton, Genesee Co., MI, and his mother Emma is with them. In the 1930 Federal Census, "Cliford J. Remington" is age 62 and living at 630 Adelaide St. in Fenton, Genesee Co., MI, with his wife "Hariet C." and daughter Marguerite, aged 40, as well as his mother Emma J., aged 84.

  59. 126.  Shirley Borst Descendancy chart to this point (67.Alice3, 15.Abner2, 1.Thomas1) was born Jan 1893.

    Notes:

The question is, is Shirley Borst Alice's daughter, and if so, is John her father? The census data in 1900 is inconclusive; it may or may not be correct. According to the 1910 census, Alice has had 6 children, and 5 are living at that time. If James is her son, then Shirley must not be (?). This needs more research.
