Joseph Remington

Notes:

Joseph is not listed with Remingtons in the 1830 Federal Census at MA, so probably the family moved from RI to MA between 1830 and 1833.

In the 1840 Federal Census for Dartmouth, Bristol County, MA, there is a Joseph Remington as head of a household with 2 white males under age 5, 1 white male 5-10, 1 white male 40-50, 1 white female 5-10, 2 white females 10-15, and one white female 30-40. This is very likely our Joseph, but one of the older girls is missing in 1850 -- has either died or moved out.

In the 1850 Federal Census, New Bedford, MA, the family is on p. 345. The household includes: Joseph 50, Mary 43, Alice 23, Caroline 17, Edmund 15, Wm. S. 13, Jane C. 10 (should be James), Lucy J. 8, Emma 4, & Eleanor H. 2 mos.

In 1860 they are on p. 681, without Joseph.

The death record for Joseph identifies his parents as Thomas & Alice, and gives his birthplace as Tiverton, RI. He died at age 43 of a tumor. The place of death was 10 Bedford St.

Joseph married Mary Wood Coggeshall Abt 1826. Mary (daughter of Ichabod Coggeshall and Bathsheba Wood) was born Between 1807 and 1808, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 24 Mar 1888, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

In the 1870 Federal Census, Alice Remington is age 40, a tailoress, living at New Bedford with her mother and two sisters.

According to the marriage record at New Bedford, Alice was 47 when she married George. That gives her a birth of c1828. The marriage record gives her middle initial as G, and I am making an assumption that it is Grinnell.

Alice married George Snow 6 May 1875, New Bedford, MA. George was born Abt 1818, Middleboro, MA; died 1904; was buried , Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, MA. [Group Sheet]

Eliza's death record identifies her parents as Joseph and Mary W. (Coggeshall) Remington and also gives her date of birth.

Eliza died of an intestinal obstruction at age 85 y 1 m 5 d.

Eliza married Edward Wood 17 Jul 1851, MA. Edward was born Abt 1820, MA. [Group Sheet]

Caroline married Jonathan Howland, Jr. Abt 1854. Jonathan (son of Jonathan Howland, Sr. and Elizabeth Cross) was born 13 Mar 1831, New Bedford, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

His name may have been Edward.

New Bedford whaling files (seamen's insurance records) show an Edward Remington, age 12, b. Dartmouth, MA, who went on a voyage 19 May 1847. The age and birthplace could easily match Joseph's son "Edmund." It says he was 4'10" and had a light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes.

In the Federal Census of 1850, there is an Edmund C. Remington, age 35 MA, living at Reading, Hillsdale Co., MI. He is a carpenter. This could be the son of Joseph & Mary.

Edward married Susan A. Smith 31 Oct 1865, Edgartown, MA. Susan (daughter of Holmes Wass Smith and Sophia Coffin) was born Abt. 1839, Edgartown, Dukes Co.,. MA; died 29 Sep 1897. [Group Sheet]

Apparently William also sailed the seas. The records at New Bedford have a William S. Remington, age 22 on 24 Sep 1859, described as born in New Bedford, 5'8 1/2" with light skin, light hair, and blue eyes.

In 1870, William & Martha are living at Fall River, MA. Their ages are given as 32 & 42. With them are three teenagers, surname Valentine, probably Martha's children from a previous marriage: Jefferson B. 17, Jessie B. 17, & Ella C. 13, all b MA; also Eliza Waterhouse, age 64 Maine, probably Martha's mother.

In 1900, William Remington, age 50 (born Feb 1849), is living at New Bedford, MA, with a wife named Minnie J., age 40 (born June 1859). This may be the same William, even though the age is off considerably.

In 1910, William S. Remington, age 60, is living at New Bedford, MA, with a "second" wife, Linette (?name illegible?), b MA, parents b in England. The wife may be Minnie, as above.

He probably is the William S. Remington, age 70 and widowed, living at New Bedford, MA, in the 1920 Federal Census. It says he was born in MA, and both parents were born in RI. However, the age is off considerably.

In the 1900 Federal Census, there is a couple living at VT, which looks like William & Martha, but the birth dates are off: William Remington, b Oct 1834 MA, parents b RI & MA; Martha A. Remington, b Jul 1839 VT, parents b VT. This couple is also in the 1880 census at Craftsbury, Orleans Co., VT, with a daughter named Flora E., age 10; they are living with an older couple named Mulford. In 1910 they are still at Craftsbury, VT. They appear to be William & Martha of New Bedford except for two differences: Martha's birthplace, given in the censuses as VT, but in the marriage record as ME; also, the marriage record has her maiden name as Waterhouse, but in 1880 they are living with the Mulford & Clarisa Eldridg, and Martha is listed as their daughter. William married Martha A. Waterhouse 20 Nov 1866, Bristol Co., MA. Martha (daughter of Charles Waterhouse and Eliza Unknown) was born Abt 1827, Brunswick, ME; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

James C. Remington applied for seaman's insurance on 20 June 1856. At that time he was said to be age 16, born in New Bedford, 5', and with light complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes.

Remington, James C.; New Bedford 1878; Vol 301 p 115 - Death; the record identifies his parents as Joseph and Mary W. He died at age 37 of Dropsey, occupation Mariner.

Notes:

Emma is age 4 in the 1850 census. However, I think her name and Lucy's may have been listed out of order, because Lucy's birth record says she was born in 1846, but in the census she is age 8.

Emma was the informant at the time of her sister Lucy's death in 1920.

Notes:

Lucy is a school teacher at New Bedford in 1880, living with her mother Mary and sister Ella.

She died at age 75 of Aortic Obstruction, contributing factor rheumatoid arthritis; death location 221 Middle St., New Bedford; occupation, retired teacher.

Notes:

In the 1850 census Eleanor was two months old. According to her birth record, she was born on Dartmouth St.

In the 1880 Federal Census at New Bedford, she is listed as Ella H. Remington, age 28, at home (with mother and sister Lucy).

Eleanor died at age 43 of bronchitis and tuberculosis. she was single.

I believe she is the one who sent the list of Alice (Grinnell) Remington's 14 children to the relatives in Michigan. I have a copy of that list.
