Virgilius Remington is in the 1830 census at Fowler, Trumbull Co., Ohio.

Virgilious was the sheriff of Carthage, Illinois, during the time when Mormons Joseph Smith and his brother were killed. Later, Virgil went to California during the 1849 Gold Rush. Perhaps that is why he is not at home in Illinois in the 1850 Federal Census.

In 1850 he is living at Kelsey, Eldorado Co., CA. He is listed as age 48, b MA.

Virgilious D. Remington appears to be living in McDonough Co., Illinois, in the 1850 Federal Census.

In 1860 V.D. & Caroline Remington are at Hillsboro, Washington Co., OR. They have four children born in various states: Illinois, California, & Oregon.

In 1870, the family is at Abiqua Precinct, Marion Co., Oregon: V.D. & Caroline, and (apparently) their four children. Son Dewitt Remington is also with them.

In 1880 Virgilius D. & Clarinda D. Remington are living in Idaho Territory, with their son James. Also in the household are Elmer & Jerome. They are next door to son Comfort Remington and his wife.

Virgilious married Caroline C. Tyrell 11 Feb 1847, Hancock Co., IL. Caroline was born Abt 1825, OH; died Aft Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

In the 1880 Federal Census, Elmer & Hanna are living in Silver Creek Precinct, Silverton, Marion Co., OR. In the household are their four children, including twin daughters, and Esther, Elmer's mother. Also there is a boarder, John Doud, age 45 -- probably a relative on his mother's side of the family.

In 1920, Elmore S. Remington is aged 86, widowed, and living at Precinct 15, Yamhill, OR, with his adult daughter Melvina (?), 45, who is single. According to the census data, his father was born in RI and his mother in MA, but that isn't quite correct. His son Henry and family are nearby.

Elmore married Hanna Unknown Abt 1866. Hanna was born Abt 1843, Illinois; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, she is called Caroline, and is 11 years old. The census taker probably misunderstood her name.

Sometime between the 1850 census and her marriage in 1854, she traveled to CA, probably to join her father and other neighbors who had gone from Illinois. Had her father arranged a marriage for her, or was she just going to look after her father (who died in CA in 1858)?

In 1880, Evaline and her husband Jesse and children are living a few doors from her brother, Francis Marion Remington, and his wife and family. Also nearby is brother Elmer and his household, including their mother Esther (Doud) Remington, aged 72.

Evaline married Jesse Herschel Hadley 16 Jun 1854, Sacramento, CA. Jesse (son of Jesse Hadley and Lucinda Lawrence) was born Abt 15 Jun 1828, Centreville, Allegany Co., NY; died 3 Dec 1900, Marion Co., OR. [Group Sheet]

In the 1880 Federal Census, Lafayette & Helen are living in Fairfield Precinct, Marion Co., OR, with their three children. They are next door to his nephew, DeWitt, and his family. It appears that the two relatives work together in a sawmill business which Lafayette owns.

Notes from Melvina Wagner at Rootsweb's Remington message board: "Marquis DeLafayette Remington, b. Feb 2, 1847 in Macomb Prairie, IL, settled in the Woodburn, OR, area and invented a steam engine tractor, which was patented. That patent sold twice and is now owned by Catapillar Tractor Co."

In the 1880 Federal Census, F. M. Remington & Irene are living in Silver Creek Precinct, Silverton, Marion Co., OR, with their two young daughters.

In 1900 they are at Spalding, Nez Perce Co., ID.

I am wondering if Francis Marion was "California" in the 1850 Census. That year, there is listed an older brother named Francis, born c1831. Perhaps that brother subsequently died, and the youngest brother's name was changed to Francis.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Dewitt is age 2, living with his parents, his grandmother Esther, and six aunts and uncles, some of them young children like he is. The family is living in McDonough Co., IL.

In the 1880 Federal Census, DeWitt & Laura are living in Fairfield Precinct, Marion Co., OR, with their four children. They are next door to his uncle, Lafayette, and his family. It appears that the two work together in a sawmill business which Lafayette owns.

In the 1860 census his name is written as Canforth, and it says he was born in CA. In 1880 he appears to be Comfort Remington, age 22, married and living in Idaho Territory next door to his parents and siblings.
