  1. 1.  Thomas Remington was born 22 May 1726, Hingham, Plymouth County, MA; died 28 Oct 1813, Abington, MA.

    Notes:

Thomas' will in 1813 leaves money to his grandchildren Julia Ann Remmington, Charlotte Remmington, and Caroline Remington, the children of his son William Remmington deceased; also to sons Jairus and Thomas, and daughters Sarah Beal and Rachel Shaw. (source: email from Ann Remington with image of will)

Some genealogies show Jonathan b Sep 1761 (md. Martha Sprague) as a son in this family.

Also, some genealogies show no Stephen here (see notes for Stephen).

  1. 2.  Jotham Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 1752, Abington, MA.

    Notes:

Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart has his name as Jonathan, in Rev.; online sources show his name as Jotham.

The Federal Census of 1790 lists a Jotham Remington living at Clarendon, Rutland Co., VT. It appears that he is living by himself.

  2. 3.  Jesse (1) Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born 23 Dec 1754, Abington, MA; died 24 Feb 1755, Abington, MA.

    Notes:

The death record says he died at about age 2.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me -- Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher -- and/or to other sources as noted herein.)

The family of Jesse Remington is in the 1800 census at Candia, Rockingham Co., NH, and in 1810 at Chester, Rockingham Co., NH. In 1800, there appear to be five sons and one daughter; in 1810 there are seven sons and two daughters.

See the publication entitled "Historical discourse delivered at the centennial anniversary of the Congregational Church, Candia, N.H., April 5, 1871" by James H. Fitts; Exeter, N.H.: News-Letter Press, 1903. This history of the church pastored by Rev. Jesse Remington has many references to him, particularly in pp. 45 ff. The notes immediately following here are from this source.

"On the 12 of July, 1790, the town by a vote of 76 to 12, extended to Mr. Jesse Remington a Call to the work of the ministry in this Parish . . . The church also, Oct. 20, 1790, extended him a call, and received him to 'full communion' by letter from Taunton." (p. 45 - 46)

The area of Candia, Rockingham County, NH, was initially purchased and settled around 1720. The town was incorported in 1763, and a preacher was hired in 1764. Rev. Remington was the fifth minister to the town's congregants. He served in this ministry 24 years 4 months 13 days (1790 - 1815).

He was born in Abington, MA, in 1760, graduated from Harvard in 1784, and received the honarary degree of Master of Arts in 1808. (p. 48)

Rev. Jesse Remington died on 3 Mar 1815 at the age of 55, after a "long, painful, and tedious sickness" in which he was "patient, submissive, and resigned." (p. 49)

From his funeral sermon by Rev. Josiah Prentice: "He was indeed an Evangelical Preacher, sound in the Faith, remarkably clear in the doctrines of grace, a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, holding forth the faithful word . . . " (p. 49)

This historical discourse mentions a man named Jesse Remington Fitts associated with the church in the 1870s. He and his family are in the 1850 census at Candia. I don't think that he was a descendant, but he was born c1815 and was obviously named after the pastor.

There is a Latin inscription on his gravestone: "Sic transit gloria mundi" -- which means, so fades the glory of the world.

According to Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart, Jesse was in the Revolution (no source noted).

From the headmaster of Jesse Remington High School:

    Hello Lois
Well, Mr. Remington was a most fascinating man! There is a bit known about him, but not a lot. He was a late Colonial Pastor, statesman, leader in the Candia, Chester area. He led our area in strong Christian teaching, and was a strong opponent to the new, deistic definition of Christianity.

He died in 1815, is buried here, with a wife and son. We use his home as part of our campus.

I was on the team that chose the name for our school, and we use his name as a model and example for our students.
What little is written about him is in the Candia Public Library, which goes by the name "Smyth Public Library".
One person who is more in the know about him than I would be our pastor, David, at areformer@aol.com.

Best of luck! Let me know if you find anything really great about him!

    Jeff Philbrick

Jesse Remington was pastor from 1790 until his death in 1815. He was not the first pastor of the church but his strong evangelical theology set the church "on a firm foundation," and established the strong committed congregation that was able to receive the 265 conversions which occurred in 1822-23 during a revival. He opposed the "halfway covenant" which was the move toward liberal religion in his time - this was significant in that the President of Harvard declared his non-belief in the trinity in 1800 and the stage was being set for the Unitarian vs. Congregational split in New England. Under JR the church established a new convenant (1793) which was restored to use after the renewal here in the mid 1980s, and JR set the precedent of only baptizing the babies of "communicant members," that is, those who gave personal testimony to faith in Christ rather than simply "owning the covenant." This is still a mark of the church. In the 1790s under JR it is significant that Candia was censured by the Rockingham Assoc. for the introduction of the "new musick" via a choir and bass viol. He was a strong-minded independent person who debated with the Baptists when they arrived on his watch, and built his own house when the parsonage began falling apart (literally). After his death his empty house (recently purchased by the church and now in use) was the site of the first attempt by Fitts to create a high school that would "provide a trinitarian alternative to the Unitarian school at Exeter" (Phillips Exeter Academy). This school sputtered in and out of existence over a twenty-or-so-year period. JR is buried in the graveyard behind the church and we have some other information in various documents here if you wish to poke around. In 1871 at the Centennial of the church a prayer was offered by Fitts that a "fitting memorial" would be someday raised to JR as the spiritual father of faith in the community. We see the High School as that memorial. Hope that helps. Pastor David (Candia Congregational Church)

The Jesse Remington Farm is now the parsonage.

The following notes are adapted from the St. Lawrence County Historical Association Quarterly, Vol. 5, No. 2, April 1960, Canton, NY, available through PERSI:

Rev. Jairus Remington was pastor of the Presbyterian church at Templeton and also Poultney (or Putney?), VT. He moved to Heuvelton, NY, in Nov 1806. His only daughter Eliza, then 8 years old, rode on horseback for the entire journey. There were then three houses, all built of logs, where the village of Heuvelton now stands, and one of them being vacant, Rev. Remington moved into it. In place of glass in the windows, oiled paper was used the first winter of his occupancy. Meat was obtained form the Indians who were friendly and numerous.

Mr. Remington took up three thousand acres of land, running one mile on the river, including all water privileges . . . As soon as lumber could be sawed he built a large house on the site . . . This house was used by the travelling public and was called a tavern and it also became a boarding house for the twenty men or more who were engaged in clearing the land. To this house some of the wounded at the Battle of Ogdensburg (War of 1812) were brought . . . Mr. Remington soon had a large number of acres cleared and began the raising of horses and cattle, and so prosperous had he become that he soon had all this large tract of land paid for except the last payment of a few hundred dollars . . . The contract expired with only this small amount of payment overdue . . .

About that time a Mr. Van den Heuvel came from Holland and bought a large tract of land that included the acreage owned by Mr. Remington. In giving the deed to Mr. Van den Heuvel, Judge Ford acknowledged the "equitable claim of Jairus Remington." Mr. Remington entered the matter in court, but soon after this he died and the matter was never resolved.

After the death of Jarius, his wife moved into a house on DeKalb Rd. Not long after this, her only son Hiram died, and then she removed to Wrentham, MA, which had likely been her former home. There she remarried to David Fisher, a banker, with whom she lived eight years. Mrs. Fisher died at age 87, about 1857, in Massachusetts. Her maiden name was Lois Shepard, daughter of Benjamin Shepard of Wrentham, MA. Mr. Shepard owned the first cotton factory in America and he was also a commissary under General Washington, supplying him with provisions for the army.

My notes: Heuvelton, NY, is on NY State route 812 in St. Lawrence County, and is just southeast of Ogdensburg. The river by Jarius Remington's land may have been the Oswegatchie River or another nearby tributary of the St. Lawrence River.

Jairus married Lois Shephard 1 Feb 1795, Wrentham, Norfolk Co., MA. Lois (daughter of Benjamin Shephard) was born Abt 1770; died Abt 1857, MA. [Group Sheet]

    5. 28. Lydia Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 12 Apr 1813, Abington, MA.

  9. 10.  Stephen Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born Abt 1772, MA.

    Notes:

I am not sure Stephen belongs in this family, but Boyd Scott Remington has him here.

Stephen Remington was born 4 July 1772 to Joshua Remington & Ruth Clay.

A Stephen Remington married Thankful Hill; it is not known for sure to which family he belongs. On this tree I have tentatively placed Thankful as the wife of Stephen born to Joshua & Ruth (Clay) Remington.

  2. 14.  Jesse Remington, Jr. Descendancy chart to this point (4.Jesse2, 1.Thomas1) was born 26 Sep 1796, NH; died Aft 1820.

    Notes:

Jesse Remington is in the 1820 Federal Census at Merrimack, Hillsborough Co., NH. I have made an assumption that he is this particular Jesse Remington because his (assumed) wife Elizabeth is buried in Merrimack. If so, however, there are 4 males in the household and 5 females, which means that this must have included extended family.

Jesse — Elizabeth Unknown. Elizabeth was born Abt 1802; died 23 Sep 1820; was buried , Turkey Hill Cemetery, Merrimack, Hillsborough Co., NH. [Group Sheet]

  3. 15.  John Remington Descendancy chart to this point (4.Jesse2, 1.Thomas1) was born 12 Oct 1798, NH; died Aft 1 Jun 1870.

    Notes:

I have included a wife and son for John, based on OH census data as noted below. I am not sure this is the same John Remington, but the age and state of birth agree. Therefore I am making a tentative assumption that this is the son of Jesse & Polly, and that his son is Allen.

He may be the John Remington, age 50? b NH, a blacksmith, in the 1850 Federal Census living at Perkins, Erie Co., OH. He has a wife (?) Julia, 38 NY. Also in the household are Albert & Charles Nichols, ages 6 & 3 OH. Living nearby is Allen Remington, age 18 OH, who may be John's son. Is Julia possibly a second wife? Are the two boys her sons, or possibly orphaned nephews? These questions need to be researched.

In the 1870 Federal Census, John Remington is age 72 NH, a day laborer, living at Vermillion, Erie Co., OH.

John — Julia Unknown. Julia was born Abt 1812, NY. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 32. Allen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1833, OH; died Between 1910 and 1920.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Elias & Lydia are living at Topsham, Orange Co., VT. In the household are their two children, John & Oliver (I don't know whether there were any older children previously a part of this family group), and Elias's mother, Polly Remington, age 78.

In 1860 Elias & Lydia are still at Topsham. They are living next to his mother Polly, 88, and his sister Mary, 51.

In 1870, Elias is age 70 and Lydia is age 67. They are living at Orange, Orange Co., VT.

Elias married Lydia Minard 5 Nov 1837. Lydia (daughter of Thomas Minard and Sarah P. Blake) was born 4 Feb 1803, Strafford, VT; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

  5. 17.  Albert Remington Descendancy chart to this point (4.Jesse2, 1.Thomas1) was born 22 Apr 1802, NH.

Albert — Susannah Unknown. Susannah was born Abt 1802; died 7 May 1823; was buried , Turkey Hill Cemetery, Merrimack, Hillsborough Co., NH. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

In the 1860 Federal Census, Mary Remington, age 51 NH, is living with her mother Polly Remington, age 88, at Topsham, Orange Co., VT. They are next door to Elias & Lydia.

  9. 21.  Adeline Remington Descendancy chart to this point (4.Jesse2, 1.Thomas1) was born 16 Jun 1813, NH.

  10. 22.  Eliza Remington Descendancy chart to this point (8.Jairus2, 1.Thomas1) was born 28 Jul 1798, Putney, VT; died Between 1867 and 1868.

    Notes:

"Eliza Remington Daughter of the Reverend Jarus Remington Born of his wife Louis July the 28th 1798"

The online genealogy of John Alden & Priscilla Mullins says Eliza died on 6 Feb 1868 in NY.

Eliza married Nehemiah Jones 1816, Heuvelton, St. Lawrence Co., NY. Nehemiah was born 1 Feb 1795, Raynham, Bristol Co., MA; died Abt 1875, Dresden, Canada; was buried , Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

The VRs say she was daughter of Thomas & Rachel, but I think that is a clerical error. She died at age 38. She was a daughter of Thomas & Lydia, and granddaughter of Thomas & Rachel.

  13. 25.  Thomas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.Thomas2, 1.Thomas1) was born 23 Apr 1803, Abington, MA; died 26 Feb 1832, Abington, MA.

I am not sure that John Remington is Allen's father, but since they are living near each other in the 1850 census, it is a reasonable assumption. It is also unclear whether Julia is his mother, stepmother, or another relative.

In the 1850 Federal Census Allen is age 18, living at Perkins, Erie Co., OH, with Aaron Whipple 33 NY and his (probable) mother Lydia Whipple 60 NY and Eliza Whipple 24 NY. A later census notes that Allen is Aaron's nephew.

They are next to John B. & Rhoda Hunter and their six children, including a son named Remington. Are they related to Allen? Next to the Hunters is John Remington 50 NH and his household -- possible wife Julia Remington 38 NY, and Albert & Charles Nichols, ages 6 & 3.

In the 1860 Federal Census Allen is age 28 OH, still living with Aaron (40) & Lydia (60) Whipple, at Perkins, Erie Co., OH. Julia Remington age 50 NY is living in the same town, but John is not listed anywhere that I can see. With her are Jacob Nichols 38 PA, as well as Albert & Charles Nichols, 16 & 13 OH.

In 1870 Allen is married and still living at Perkins, OH. He is age 37 OH; his wife Quintrilla is 24 OH. They have a son, Edward 1 OH. Aaron Whipple 50 NY is the head of the household. Next to or near them is Jacob Nichols 48, along with Catherine (wife?) 36, Charles 24, and Marshall 5; they are next to Remington & Maria Hunter and their 4 children (Remington is s/o John B & Rhoda Hunter).

In 1880 Allen & Quintrilla, ages 61 & 47, are still living with Aaron Whipple 61 NY. The census notes that Aaron is their uncle. There are four Remington children in the household: Edward 12, Allen 9, Cora 6, and Susan 3, all b OH. They are still next to the family of Jacob Nickols.

In the Federal Census of 1900, Allen & Quintrilla are still at Perkins, OH. With them is married daughter Cora B. Anthony and her two children, Ralph & Esther. Also there are two other daughters, Susie & Ellen Ann (?).

Allen married Quintrilla Unknown Abt 1867. Quintrilla was born Abt 1845, OH; died Bef 15 Apr 1910. [Group Sheet]
