Martha married Jonathan Remington Abt 1786. Jonathan (son of Joshua (2) Remington, II and Ruth Clay) was born 1 Sep 1761, Abington, Plymouth Co., MA; died 19 Apr 1833. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Isaac is age 62, living at Oswego, Oswego Co., NY. With him is son Solomon and his family, as well as Huldah & Joseph, probably two more of his children. Living two doors down are Nathan & Rhoda Remington; I am making an assumption that Nathan is another son in this family.

Pat Boyden's genealogy has Isaac's date of death as 11 Nov 1860. However, I have not been able to locate him anywhere in the 1860 census. (This needs more research to confirm.)

Isaac & Huldah also may have had two additional daughters, named Sarah & Betsy (per notes sent by Charles Norman Hill).

Follow-up to above note: I have found a couple in the 1850 census, named Oliver & Sarah Morgan. From her daughter Brintha's gravestone inscription, I know that Sarah's maiden name is Remington. Therefore, I am including Sarah as a daughter in this family group (needs further research to confirm).

Rufus's gravestone give his years as 1792-1866.

The 1830 Federal Census shows Rufus Remington at Rodman, Jefferson Co., NY. The household consists of: 1 male <5, 3 males 5<10, 1 male 10<15, 1 male 30<40, 1 female <5, and 1 female 30<40.

The 1840 Federal Census at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, lists Rufus Remmington Jr., Truman Remmington, Rufus Remmington, and Jonathan Remmington (age 20-30 OR age 60-70?) these last two listed and probably living next to each other. Is this Jonathan Rufus's son, and if so, who are the older individuals with him?

Amos Gorton, husband of Rhoda Remington, is also listed with the above Remingtons.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Rufus & Rebecca are both listed as age 60, living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, near Amos, Rufus Jr., and John J. B. Remington and their families. In the household is Rebecca, age 10. I am assuming she is their youngest.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Rufus & Rebecca, ages 65 & 63, are still at Wallingford. Next to them are John J. Remington and family.

Including Rufus in this family group as a son of Jonathan & Martha needs confirmation. I obtained this connection from Rootsweb's Worldconnect and other genealogies which have been sent to me. Information from subsequent generations was obtained from census data.

The 1850 census at Wallingford lists several other young adult Remingtons who may be children of this family: Octavia 22 (1828), Prudence and Amy 18 (1832), and Thankful 16 (1834).

I cannot locate John in any census earlier than 1840.

In the Federal Census of 1840, John Remington is listed at Pitcairn, St. Lawrence Co., NY. The household consists of: 1 male <5, 1 male 10<15, 1 male 15<20, 1 male 40<50, 2 females <5, 1 female 5<10, 2 females 15<20, and 1 female 40<50.

In the 1850 Federal Census, John & Susan Remington, ages 53 & 48, are still living at Pitcairn, Saint Lawrence, NY. With them are: Melissa 10 and Roxy 7.

In the 1860 Federal Census, he appears to be the John Remington age 64 VT, living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. His wife Susana is 59. Nearby are the families of Amos Remington and Nathan Remington who are first cousins to each other. I have made an assumption that he is their uncle, based on his age and place of birth.

In 1870 they are still at Diana, NY, ages 75 & 69.

In 1880, they are probably John & Susan Remington at Diana, NY, ages 90 & 78. His (presumed) brother Jonathan is also in the same town, age 78.

The intersection of NY Rts. 3 & 812 in Diana, Lewis Co., NY, is called "Remington Corners."

The following notes are from Mary Lou Raftery:

"The original member of the Remington family in the Remington Corners area, John, father of Henry Remington, built a log house back of the Cassisy home."

John applied for pension benefits from the War of 1812. The application states that he was born 7 Nov 1790 in Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT. Date of application is 15 Sep 1879; he was 89 yrs old. John listed the locations where he had lived since his discharge from the service on 18 Sep 1814 as follows:
Mt. Holly, VT; 12 yrs; 1814 - 1826 [Rutland Co.]
Champion, Jefferson Co., NY; 6 months; 1826
Denmark, Lewis Co., NY; 8 yrs; 1826 - 1832
Pitcairn, St. Lawrence Co., NY; 14 yrs; 1832 - 1846 [see 1850 census notes above]
Diana, Lewis Co., NY; 32 yrs; 1846 - 1878

In the application John said he was poor and that his children could no longer care for him and his wife, who are now aged and dependent on the town, which allows him and his wife only $1 per person each week.

His physical appearance is described as 5' 2 1/2" tall, blue eyes, dark complexion and black hair.

Among the 36 people who signed the petition are: two Graves individuals, J. Remington, B. Collar, Smith, 3 Carley individuals, Orville Austin, A. Remington, and others.

The petition was denied because they could find no record of John's service.

Information on Phebe's marriage was obtained from a descendant, Toni (Clark) Thompson. I have made an assumption that this married belongs to this particular Phebe Remington, based on all available evidence: her age in the census records, place of marriage, and state of birth.

In the Federal Census of 1830, listings for Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, show Jonathan Rimmington and Jonathan Rimmington Jr. Jonathan Jr. has three children in the household: 1 female 5<10, 1 female <5, and 1 male <5.

In the Federal Census of 1840, a Jonathan Remington appears at Wallingford, VT. However, according to Mary Lou Raftery, this Jonathan is at Diana, Lewis Co., NY (not accessible at ancestry.com).

Information on the 1865 census at Diana, NY, is from Mary Lou Raftery: Jonathan Remington 61 VT, Nathan Remington son-in-law 37 Jeff. NY, Rhoda Remington 34 child VT, Emily J. Walod 19 adopted Jeff. NY, Jonathan A. Bowhall 4 adopted Lewis Co., NY.

In the 1870 census, Johnathan Remington 66 VT is living at Champion, Jefferson Co., NY. He is with married daughter Phebe C. and her husband Abner Smith and famiy.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Jonathan Remington is age 78 VT, living with the family of George Collar in Diana, Lewis Co., NY. Jonathan is identified as grandfather. His brother John, age 90 in the census, is also living at Diana, NY.

Who was his wife? Where is he in the censuses of 1850 and 1860?

The intersection of NY Rts. 3 & 812 in Diana, Lewis Co., NY, is called "Remington Corners."

In the 1850 Federal Census, Nathan Remington is age 45, and living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, in the household of Alfred & Rebecca Hill or Hull. A notation on the census says he is insane.

The following quote is courtesy of Mary Lou Raftery, and excerpted from "People of Wallingford" by Birney C. Batcheller, Stephen Daye Press, Brattleboro, VT; p 207: "For many years the town of Wallingford provided for paupers by auctioning them off to the lowest bidder at the annual town meeting. There was one town charge named Nathan Remington. About 1840, Alfred Hull said he would take Nathan for the work he could do. So Nathan went to the Hull home for one year and remained there until he died in 1885. He was a strong, perfectly healthy man who had a strange mental twist, said to have been caused by being jilted by the girl of his choice. He was a good worker, especially good in caring for the oxen, pigs, and poultry. He was trustworthy and had an excellent memory. He was a familiar figure on the streets and called by name by most of the residents for very many years. In the Hull home his meals were served at a small table by a window in one corner of the big kitchen. The chair placed there was his place to sit. He could read and used to read the Herald aloud to Nancy McLaughlin, who did not know the alphabet, but was an excellent worker in the Hull kitchen for nearly twenty years. Whenever Nathan came to a word he could not pronounce he always said 'sunthin' or nother' and read on. He survived Mr. Hull by ten years and Mrs. Hull by four months but was cared for in the home. His funeral was held in the Hull home and he was buried at the south end of the Hull lot according to a promise given him by Mrs. Hull. A good-sized marble headstone was put at his grave, bearing his name, date of death, and probably age, 80 years."

An administrator's settlement of Nathan's will names known family members (including nephews) as follows: John Remington, Amos Remington, Jonathan Remington, Sylvia Perkins, Benjamin Gorton, Clarinda Warner, & Jane Conger; possibly two living brothers, John Remington & Jonathan Remington. Notes:

It appears in the 1830 census that Truman Remington is married and has three daughters under age five. The family is living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT.

In 1840 the family is still at Wallingford. He is listed near Amos Gorton, Rufus Remington, and Jonathan Remington. It appears that there are three sons and two daughters in the household.

Octavia Remington 22 VT and Prudence Remington 18 VT, living at Wallingford, VT, in the 1850 census, could possibly be Truman's daughters.
