    According to the death record of John J. Cornell at Savannah, he died at age 65. It identifies his birthplace as Rhode Island.

    He was probably named after John Jay -- American patriot, statesman, one of the Founding Fathers, President of the Continental Congress 1778-1779, signer of the Treaty of Paris, and First Chief Justice of the United States from 1789-1795; he also was Governor of the State of New York.

    John married Nancy "Ann" Anthony Remington 8 Oct 1807, Newport, Newport Co., RI. Nancy (daughter of Tiddeman H. Remington and Elizabeth Sheffield) was born 4 Feb 1787, Jamestown, RI; died Abt Aug 1821, Beaufort, SC; was buried , Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    According to his death record, he died at age 87 y 2 m 25 d. It identifies his birthplace as Newport, RI, and his parents as Gideon and Belinda Cornell.

    Consequently, I am not absolutely sure Gardner belongs to this couple, but some of the names of his children suggest that he does, as well as a connection to Beaufort, SC. Compare the names of his sons with his uncle John J., and with his uncle's two sons. I am wondering if the informant at his death gave the incorrect name of his mother. Since he died in old age, as a widower, it is possible that the informant at the time did not remember his mother's name correctly.

    It is also possible that his father Gideon was married twice, with Belinda being a second wife.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, the family is at Edgartown, MA: Gardner T. Cornell 52 born Newport, RI; Mary 59 born Edgartown; Gideon 26 Ed. mariner; Enoch C. 23 Ed. painter; William G. 20 Ed. ship carpenter; George B. 17 Ed. laborer; Velma Coffin 64 Ed.

    Gardner married Mary Coffin 26 Feb 1815, Edgartown, Dukes Co., MA. Mary (daughter of Enoch Coffin and Huldah Unknown) was born 11 Oct 1791, Edgartown, Dukes Co., MA; died 7 Nov 1865, Edgartown, Dukes Co., MA; was buried , Westside Cemetery, Edgartown, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Named after his father, his name honors great American Patriot John Jay (see notes for his father, John Jay Cornell).
