1001 Avis Northup was baptized on 12 Nov 1782, the same day as her husband Gideon and her brother-in-law Rouse. Slocum, Avis (I09434)

1002 Axel came to America in 1893.

In the Federal Census of 1930, Axel & Johanna Sunman are living at South Kingstown, RI. They are next to Terry & Mary Sunman and their daughter Mildred. I have made an assumption that Terry is their son.

The inscription on the gravestone reads: "Asleep in Jesus."
Sunman, Axel Wilhelm (I06883)

1003 B. & Augusta Remington, ages 32 & 33, are living at Mexico, Oswego Co., NY, in the 1860 Federal Census. They have two children.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Benjamin & Mina, ages 52 & 44, are living at Mexico, NY. They are living near the Gifford & Leroy Remington families, and also near John & Ella Wellwood.
Remington, Benjamin (I13774)

1004 Banfield was about 92 when he died.

It is said that he and his first wife were married for 52 years before she died. He had 12 known children.

Banfield married second to a Miss or Mrs. Blackington (d 10 May 1735), and third to Mrs. Sarah (Pease) Daggett, widow of Deacon John Daggett of Attleboro, MA.

Source for the above notes: "Genealogy of the Descendants of Banfield Capron, from A.D. 1660 to A.D. 1859" by Frederic A. Holden. (Google books)

Some genealogies have the first and second wife as the same individual, named Elizabeth.
Capron, Banfield (I23148)

1005 Banfield's second wife was Sarah, widow of Benjamin Brown. Capron, Banfield Jr. (I23150)

The 1851 England census gives James' birthplace as Broadmoor Common, Herefordshire.

"Broadmoor Common, England is a village in Herefordshire, England. It is 111 miles (179km) west of London and 43 miles (69km) south west of Wolverhampton."

He arrived in USA in August 1855.

In the 1860 Federal Census, the "Edward" family is living in Ward 6, Providence, RI: James 23 Eng, Penlope 25 Ire, & Henrietta 9 mos NY. James is a picture framer. In 1865 he is a picture frame manufacturer.

In the 1870 Federal Census, the Edwards family is living in Ward 1, Providence, RI: James 33 Eng, Penelope 38 Ire, Henrietta 11 NY, & James 5 RI. James Sr. is a picture frame maker.

In the 1880 Federal Census at Providence, Providence County, RI, the Edwards family is as follows: James 42 Eng, frame maker; Nappy P. 50 Ire, keeping house; Henrietta 21 NY, works in screw factory; James 15 RI, frame maker.

I was told that James and his second wife had a son George and three other sons, names unknown. However, I tend to doubt that information, as they were married somehwat beyond childbearing age.

James was baptized twice as a member of the LDS church in Providence, RI. His second marriage was performed by an LDS reverend or elder. (source: ancestry.com)

Edwards, James Lovejoy (I00069)

1010 Baptisms from Rehoboth church records, transcribed by Elisha Turner, NEHGR, Vol. 15, Jan 1861:
Jonathan Chaffey, 17 Apr 1709
Nat. Chaffey, 17 Apr 1709
Hannah Chaffey, 17 Apr 1709
Dan l Chaffey (no date given)
Miriam Chaffey, (no date given)
These are some of Jonathan's children.

The following information is extracted from William H. Chaffee's "The Chaffee Genealogy," published by Grafton Press in the early 1900s:

"Jonathan Chaffe was several times chosen a grand juryman, also elected selectman, field driver, tything man, etc." In 1727 the town of Rehoboth appointed him to prepare and oversee a plan to locate schools throughout the town. He is known to have bought land in Ashford, CT, which he gave/sold to his eldest son, Jonathan, and to his brother David. Records also show that he became guardian of his brother Noah's two orphaned sons, presumably after 1736. Land deeds refer to Jonathan as "Yeoman," "husbandman," and "Mason."

The old burying ground by the Congregational Church in Rumford, RI, has a stone which reads:
Jonathan Chaffe
Departed this life
December 31, 1766
in the 89th year of
his age.
CHAFFEY, Jonathan (I00573)

1011 Barbara & John were married by Anthony Low, Justice. Family F02297

1012 Barbara was the organist at Warwick Central Baptist Church for many years. Cole, Barbara Emily (I01163)

1013 Barbara was the second wife of Samuel Wickham. Holden, Barbara (I04452)

1014 Barbary and her sister Comfort married two half brothers, Carmi and Reuben Whitford. Barbary's gravestone has been photographed along with her husband's. Some records show her name as Barbara; the gravestone says Barbary. BAILEY, Barbary (I00341)

1015 Barnard and Mary were "of Swansey" when they were married. Hill, Barnard (I27241)

1016 Based on 1830, 1840, and 1850 census data, Thomas probably had at least three, and possibly four, sons: one born 1821-1825, two born 1826-1830, and one born c. 1835. In 1841 he and his wife were living with three sons; possibly an older one had already left home.

In 1830 and 1840, Thomas and family were in Ontario County, NY. By 1850 they were in Hillsdale County, MI: Thomas 66 RI, Elizabeth 60 NJ, & James 16 MI.

A Darius Remington b. c. 1833 is living in Allen, Hillsdale, MI, in 1850, with the Ames family. Mrs. Ames is Eliza Remington b. 1823. Is Darius another son of Thomas? (He may be a son of Orlando & Mary Remington.)

In 1860 Thomas & Elizabeth are 66 and 60, living at Allen, Hillsdale Co., MI, with daughter Minerva 14, Peter Marsh 14, and Ian 6 months. Were these foster children? Living nearby are son James & his wife Elizabeth.

In later years Thomas, a widower, worked as a railroad hand and lived with his son James C. Remington, in Allen Twp, Hillsdale County, MI.

Some of the above information was extracted from family notes shared by Carol Burford (email: rebcjb@earthlink.net).
Remington, Thomas Briggs (I07167)

1017 Based on information from a descendant, from published genealogies, and from family names passed down, I have made an assumption that the Nancy Remington b c 1762 at East Greenwich, RI, who married Col. Andrew Potter, is the same individual as this Anne Remington.

Nancy was often a nickname for Ann, Anne, and Anna. See: http://www.cslib.org/nickname.htm -- also -- http://usefulenglish.ru/vocabulary/womens-names -- and elsewhere.

According to her son Rev. Ray Potter's memoirs, Nancy came to the truth of the Gospel at about 1813 or age 52 or thereabouts. She "ever after was a burning and shining light in the church, a mother in Israel, and finished her course with joy."

Also, according to Ray, his parents were poor.

Remington, Anne "Nancy" (I05494)

1018 Based on the names of his children as mentioned in his will, and also the location of his burial, I am making an assumption that Richard is father of Joseph Cornell. This makes sense because Richard's wife was Mary Martin, and Joseph had a daughter named Mary Martin Cornell. Cornell, Richard (I10496)

1019 Based on this marriage record, I am assuming that Thomas's wife Mary, was in fact Mary Briggs. Briggs, Mary (I07203)

1020 BATES Asa, of James, and Elizabeth Cranston, of Peleg; m. by John Westcott, Justice, Aug. 7, 1785. Family F02329

1021 Bathiah may have married Asa Armington, her sister's widower. She is called Bathiah Armington in her father's will. Remington, Bethiah (I05146)

1022 Bathsheba and her sister may have been married on the same day. Hull, Bathsheba (I12037)

1023 BATTEY William, and Rebecca Sayer; m. by Rev. Gardiner Thurston, March 17, 1778.

I have made an assumption that this marriage record pertains to this particular William Battey (needs more research to confirm).
Family F10051

1024 Beatrice was adopted and her name became Waldtraut (Traudy) Schwenk. Nikolaisen, Beatrice "Traudy" (I24071)

1025 BEAZLEY Edward T., of Providence, and Almira Ellis, of and at Cranston, Oct. 28, 1822 Family F08884

1026 Because of the age difference, possibly Sarah is his second wife. Smith, Sarah A. A. (I10863)

1027 Bela lived in Rockland, MA (see Remington Ancestry Chart).

In the 1880 Federal Census, Bela C. & Maria L. Remington are living at Weymouth, Norfolk Co., MA.

In the 1900 and 1910 Federal Censuses, Bela C. & Maria E. Remington (or Elizabeth M.), are living at Holbrook, Norfolk Co., MA. They have two children in the household: Edith T. & Lizzie F.
Remington, Bela Crane (I07910)

1028 Belle & William had four children: William Donald, Albert Joseph, Ralph Russel, & Mary Jane. Remington, Ida Belle (I20832)

1029 Ben & Liz were married by William Peirce, Justice. Family F02325

1030 Ben Cranston is ancestor of the Cranstons of Warren and Bristol, RI, many of whom were mariners. CRANSTON, Benjamin I (I16538)

1031 Benedict & Mary were married on a Thursday. Family F05655

1032 Benedict is not included in the list of births in James N. Arnold's published East Greenwich births. Arnold, Benedict (I12983)

1033 Benedict was Governor of Rhode Island 1663-66, 1669-72, and 1677-78.

From "Early Records of the Arnold Family" in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register: "We came from Providence with our family to Dwell at Newport in Rhode Island the 19th of November, Thursday in afternoon, & arrived ye same night. Ano. Domina 1651. . . my father and his family Sett Sayle from Dartmouth in Old England, the first of May, friday & Arrived In New England. June 24th Ano 1635. We came to Providence to Dwell the 20th of April, 1636. per me Bennedict Arnold."

So, Benedict was 19 1/2 years old when he came to America with his family.
Arnold, Gov. Benedict (I04645)

1034 Benedict was one of three men who left RI in 1787 and traveled to Yates County, NY, to select a place for the settlement of followers of the "Universal Friend," Jemima Wilkinson. He later owned about 500 acres. Benedict & Susannah had four children. Robinson, Benedict (I07782)

1035 Benjamin "of Charlestown" is identified as son of Jeremiah, so I have tentatively placed him with this Jeremiah as his father -- needs more research to confirm. Rogers, Benjamin (I24381)

1036 Benjamin & Abigail had at least 5 children. He had at least 1 child by his second wife, Sarah. Smith, Benjamin (I12479)

1037 Benjamin & Deborah had about 11 children. Tower, Benjamin (I10926)

1038 Benjamin & Eleanor had at least six children: Sarah, Jane, Elisha, Mary, Elizabeth, & Benjamin.

Carpenter, Benjamin (I04908)

1039 Benjamin & Elizabeth moved from Newport to the part of Swansea, MA, which later became Warren, RI. All his children are believed to have been born there, and he lived the rest of his life there.

According to "Descendants of Gov. John Cranston of Rhode Island," Benjamin was married first to a Miss Thurber, but had no children by her. However, in looking at the birth date of Benjamin III and the marriage date of his father to Elizabeth Estabrook, it seems that Benjamin might have been born to the first wife.
CRANSTON, Benjamin II (I16539)

1040 Benjamin & his brother Job are mentioned in Exeter land evidence dated 2 April 1752, where they are identified as sons of Henry, of West Greenwich. Greene, Benjamin (I09253)

1041 Benjamin & Innocent were married by William Anthony, Jr., Justice. Family F02958

1042 Benjamin & Racheal had nine known children. Tilley, Benjamin (I09878)

1043 Benjamin & Sarah were married by Job Greene, Justice. (see Coventry Marriages, Vol. I, p. 23) Family F03617

1044 Benjamin & Wait were married by Joseph Harris, Justice. Family F05267

1045 Benjamin and Deliverance were married by Thomas Anthony, Justice. Family F01214

1046 Benjamin and Elizabeth were married by Walter Cook, Justice. Family F00204

1047 Benjamin and his two sons are mentioned in the will of his father. Potter, Benjamin (I27048)

1048 Benjamin F. Remington was a Lieutenant in the Civil War, RI 1st Light Artillery, Tompkins Battery. He was originally stationed at Providence, RI, for three months' service, April 1861. His battery was sent to battle, but didn't participate in a full-scale battle, as the confederates vacated camp when the Union troops approached. Remington was in command of the battery on the return trip home. They were disappointed that they didn't have the chance to use their skills.

This family is in the 1880 Census at Warwick, RI.

Cause of death: consumption.
Remington, Benjamin Franklin (I04151)

1049 Benjamin is mentioned as deceased in his brother Samuel's will of 16 January 1775.

The RI Cemetery Database lists a Benjamin Slocum c.1715 - 11 Jan 1724, buried PO 600. Whether this is the same individual must be researched.
Slocum, Benjamin (I05430)

1050 Benjamin is mentioned in the will of his brother William, dated 16 April 1746, so I have made an assumption that Benjamin died after the date the will was written. Munroe, Benjamin (I20621)
