1151 BSR (Boyd Scott Remington, family researcher and compiler) says John was of Lansingburgh, NY, and had children Norman E., John E., & Martha. I have added these names to John's family, and research is ongoing. See notes for the two sons.

There is a Norman Remington in the census records 1850 - 1870 at Lansingburgh, but there is no indication who his father may have been. I have made an assumption that this Norman is a son of this particular John Remington, as noted by BSR. Later records give Norman's birthplace as Lansingburgh, and his estimated birth year strongly suggests that he belongs to John Remington as shown in the following censuses.

In the Federal Census of 1810, John Remington Jr. is at Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA. The household consists of 1 free white male under 10, 1 free white male 26 - 44, and 1 free white female 16 - 25. This looks like a young couple with a young son. John Remington (presumably his father and family) is listed in the same town.

The Federal Census of 1820 lists John Remington at Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY. I have made an assumption that it is this particular John Remington, for three reasons -- the above-mentioned BSR genealogy chart; the fact that John's uncle, Jonathan, settled at Lansingburgh (adjoining Troy); and evidence from Norman's and John E.'s families that links them to Troy and Lansingburgh. The household in 1820 consists of 1 free white male <10 (b 1811 - 1820), 1 free white male 10 - 15 (b 1805 - 1810), 1 free white male 26 - 44 (b 1776 - 1794), 3 free white females <10 (b 1811 - 1820), 1 free white female 10 - 15 (b 1805 - 1918), and 1 free white female 26 - 44 (b 1776 - 1794). This data suggests that John and his wife may have had 2 sons and 4 daughters.

Much information on John's son John Edward Remington and his descendants came from Delwin Remington. Other sources are noted.
Remington, John Jr. (I04040)

1152 BSR gives her date of birth as 17 April 1797. RI Cemetery Database says she died of dropsy. Short, Phebe (I04596)

1153 BSR gives the date of marriage as 13 March 1814. Family F01733

1154 BSR has her birth date as 29 June 1771. Armington, Ruth (I04193)

1155 BSR has his name as Thomas William Remington.

According to "The History of Warwick, RI" by Oliver Payson Fuller, Thomas Remington, Jr., bought farm #2 on the Cowesett plat. It was purchased from Samuel Barnes of Swansea, but had originally been granted to John Smith and then to Lieut. Eliza Collins's children, namely Eliza (Eliezar or Elisha?) & William. This large plantation was on the northeast corner of Route 2 (Quaker Lane) and Route 3 (Cowesett Rd.,) and adjoined the farm to the east which had been purchased by his father Thomas.
REMINGTON, Thomas II (I02803)

1156 BSR says Benjamin was at Argyle, NY in 1800. Remington, Benjamin (I04086)

1157 BSR says Gershom married Catherine Clemence on 13 Feb 1713, Jamestown (no source noted). However, in some documents she is referred to as Clemence. Jamestown records identify their children as "of Gershom & Clemens" or Clemence. I have made an assumption that she is Clemence Battey, based on their dates of birth and the given names Clemence & Dinah, found in both the Battey and Remington families. Family F01532

1158 BSR says he died in 1879, but this is an error. The RI Cemetery Database has 1859.

Thomas Remington's will was dated 7 Dec 1858, and proved 14 Nov 1859. It mentions his deceased father, Henry, and mother -- living -- Lucy A. Remington.
Remington, Thomas (I04572)

1159 BSR says that first she married Rev. Thomas Tew, widower of her aunt. If so, he must have died with a year or two of the marriage.

Death notice in the New York Post, 11 May 1854: "Bklyn Apr 27 Mary Ann w John Vars and dau of Henry R Remington"

Mary Ann must have died in the aftermath of giving birth to twin girls.
Remington, Mary Ann (I02977)

1160 BSR's ancestry chart has her name as Mary Sanford Brinley. Was she a widow when she married Josiah?

"My Wife Mary Arnold by Gods Will Dyed July 15th 1721 being in ye 47th of her age. Burried ye 17th."
Sanford, Mary (I08717)

1161 BSR's ancestry chart says that Stephen was at Argyle, NY, in 1790 and at Litchfield, NY, in 1800. Remington, Stephen (I04081)

1162 BSR's Remington Ancestry Chart has Enoch's date of birth as 1 January 1795. Perhaps that was a baptism? Unfortunately, neither BSR or M. Benns gives any sources notes.

The RI Cemetery Database says 1792. Cause of death is noted as sunstroke.
Remington, Enoch III (I04595)

1163 BSR's Remington Ancestry Chart has her name as Eunice. She was "of Burrillville, RI." Waterman, Emeline (I05596)

1164 Budlong, Pearce, of John, dec., and Prudence Remington, of Thomas, m. by Eld. Charles Holden, Aug. 27, 1769.

I have made an assumption that this marriage record refers to this particular Prudence Remington, because her father's name, and the time frame, fit her.

1166 Burch was probably named after his great-grandmother, Catherine (Burch) Lippitt.

In the 1930 Federal Census, Burch M. Lippitt is age 35 and married, living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, with his wife Mildred, 33. His mother-in-law, Minnie E. Repp, a widow age 58, is living with them.

According to the Social Security Death Index, his last known residence was West Palm Beach, FL.
Lippitt, Burch M. (I15928)

1167 Burrington died at age 59 from an accident. Manchester, Burrington A. (I27802)

1168 By 1 June 1880, Adeline has remarried to James Cornell, a preacher from Ireland. They are living at Wabasha, MN, along with her three sons and James's sister Sarah Cornell 22 NY. Stevens, Adeline Ursula (I12951)

1169 By 1880 it appears that Abner has died because the 1880 Federal Census lists Celesta Smith 43 NY and son Charles 13 NY living with married daughter Belinda Collar 24 NY (wife of George) in Diana, Lewis Co., NY. Johnathan Remington 78 VT is also with them, so this is a three-generation household. Remington, Phebe Celestia (I23389)

1170 By Jan 1920 Charles is married to Christine E. Nelson, Charles J. (I19794)

1172 Caleb & Huldah were married by Daniel C. Goff, Justice. Family F03277

1173 Caleb & Mary left Rhode Island to come to Potter Hill, NY, in 1817, with five of their eleven children. Briggs, Caleb (I07219)

1174 Caleb came to America as an 11-year-old with his brother, Robert, on the ship "Elizabeth & Ann" in 1635. They eventually settled in the area of Portsmouth and Newport, RI. Caleb was governor of the colony of RI, and it was during his tenure that he died by drowning.

Alden G. Beaman gives his date of birth as 9 Dec 1616 (London), but this does not agree with his age given on the ship's roster, 11.

His will was proved 6 Jan 1696 in Jamestown.
Carr, Governor Caleb (I01338)

1175 Caleb was a private in Col. Elliott's regiment of volunteers in the Revolutionary War. Also, he served as Lt. of an alarm company, 1778/79, in North Kingstown.

He was Justice of the Peace in 1780.

Caleb Hill hired a farm on the southern end of Prudence Island, where he lived for about 7 years (March 1743-March 1750); then he returned to the Quidnessett area of NK where he lived and farmed with his father. He was Justice of the Peace, Overseer of the Poor, and was both a private and a lieutenant in the Revolution. Like his father, he also was active in the Six-Principle Baptist Church -- donating money, hosting meetings, and petitioning the RI General Assembly concerning repairs. (source: Hill manuscript at NK Library)

The will of Caleb Hill of North Kingstown, yeoman, was proved 14 May 1804. It mentions wife Mary; sons Stukly & Caleb; dtrs Anna Remington w/o Hezekiah, Elizabeth Champlin, Sarah Bowen w/o Benjamin, & Rebecca Bowen w/o Stephen.
Hill, Esquire Caleb (I05861)

1176 Caleb was a Sergeant in the Revolution. According to a manuscript (Rev. War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots) at the Knight Library in Providence, Caleb served June 1775 - Aug 1780 in Capt. General's Cavaliers. It says he was buried on the Knapp place, next to the Hughes' residence, Hughesdale, Johnston, RI. (This manuscript is now at the RI Public Library, RI Collection)

He is listed on the Pension Roll of 1835: Remington, Caleb, sergeant, Providence County, all $120, rec $360, R. I. Militia, pl Oct. 24, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 86

I have estimated the birth years for some of Caleb's children.

There is a court document at the RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room, concerning $30 owed to Caleb Remington of Johnston, cooper & yeoman, by Henry Warner of Providence. The document is dated 10 January 1797. Perhaps Henry was a relative of Caleb's wife.

Capt. Caleb Remington was an innkeeper at Johnston. He also ran a blacksmith and coopering business. In 1808 he advertised his property and business for sale, with the intention of closing his business.

He appears to be living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, in the 1810 census: 1 male 10-15 (Stephen). 2 males 16-25 (Henry & ?), 1 male 45+ (Caleb), 2 females 10-15 (Elizabeth & ?), 2 females 16-25 (Roby Ann & Mary), and 1 female 45+ (wife Roby). The census was taken in August, and daughter Amy was married in April; so there are two unknown individuals listed.

In the 1830 census, he is likely the male age 80-90 living with Caleb Remington, Jr.

Death notice in the Columbian Centinel of 6 Aug 1836: "Capt. Caleb Remington d. at Johnston, age 90, was in the Revolution."

Excerpt from "Club and Professional Life or Rhode Island" Vol. 1 pub. 1895 (at RI College library; copy at Roger Wms. Family Assoc.), article on Henry Adolphus Remington: "Capt. Caleb, of Johnston, Rhode Island, born 1748, served in the expedition to Rhode Island in 1778, under Capt. Benjamin Stack, and no braver heart ever fluttered in man than that which pulsated in the heart of this well-known revolutionary hero. Caleb Remington, of Johnston, was admitted as a master Mason of Manchester Lodge, Anthony, Rhode Island, Nov. 17th, 1809. The Remingtons were early settlers of Providence, Johnston and Cranston. One of the oldest houses now standing in the town of Johnston is the Remington farm house, which passed from Caleb, son of Capt. Caleb, father of Judge Remington, the pioneer Judge of the town, and is now in the possession of the only surviving member of the family, Miss Joanna Remington."
Remington, Captain Caleb Sr. (I06202)

1177 Caleb was a son of Richard & Elizabeth (Godfrey) Greene. Greene, Captain Caleb (I11494)

1178 Caleb was of Prudence Island when he was married in 1731.

The will of Caleb Hill, of Portsmouth, Esquire, is dated 22 Dec 1748, proved 9 Jan 1755. It mentions wife Ruth; brothers Thomas, Ebenezer, and Jonathan dec'd; sisters Mary Langworthy, Patience Pearce, Sarah Miles, and Rebecca Allen; cousins [nephews] Caleb Hill, Barnerd Hill, Jonathan Hill, and Nathaniel Hill, sons of my dec'd bro Jonathan; cousin [nephew] Caleb Hill s/o of my bro Thomas; cousin [nephew] Caleb Allen s/o my sister Rebecca Allen; and cousin [neice] Ruth Hill d/o my bro Ebenezer.

1179 Caleb's will, probated at Portsmouth, RI, in 1758, mentions his brothers Godfrey Brown & Gideon Worden, also his mother Rebeckah, and sisters Rebeckah, Hannah Slocum, Jane Smith, Deborah Hayden, & Elizabeth Slocum. Brown, Caleb (I10205)

1180 Calvin Sylvester THURSTON
Calvin Sylvester, s. Daniel and Rosanna, April 7, 1808, Grafton.

Calvin died at age 81 y 10 m of "old age." The death record identifies his parents as Daniel & Rosanna. It has his middle initial as M, but everywhere else it is S, for Sylvester. The death record says he was a resident of Grafton but died at Montreal, and was buried at Grafton.
Thurston, Calvin Sylvester (I25535)

1181 Calvin, along with several of his siblings, is mentioned in the 1 May 1871 will of his grandfather, Lawton (Layton) Hopkins, of West Greenwich.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Calvin & Catherine Hopkins are living at West Greenwich, RI. They have two young daughters, Lenora 3 & Jennie 1. They are living next to Stephen H. & Angeline F. (Hall) Kettle and their son Leonard W. Hall (Kettle); Leonard later married Abbie Whitford. They are also living next to Sheffield Remington.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Calvin and his second wife Adaline M. are living at Coventry, RI. They have five children in the household.

Calvin & Adaline are both descendants of Simeon Whitford.

1183 Capt. Audley Clarke, son of Capt. Audley Clarke, was born c1739 and died 1 Jan 1771 (gravestone in Newport Common Burying Ground).

He may be the Audley Clarke of Newport, mariner, whose will was dated June 1771 (maybe was really Jan but misread?); it mentions a wife (unnamed) but no children.

Was this his wife: Margaret Clarke wife of Audley was born c1732 and died 1 Nov 1784, buried Newport, no husband's stone there? Maybe there are probate records in Newport that would clarify this.

Note that I am not sure this marriage to Margaret Howland belongs to this particular Audley.
Clarke, Captain Audley (I27855)

1184 Capt. Samuel Luther was ordained to the ministry of Swansea Baptist Church on 22 July 1685. Luther, Rev. Samuel Sr. (I19678)

1185 Captain Arthur Fenner, father of Major Thomas Fenner, built Thomas a house around 1677 on the Cranston side of Plainfield Pike, on the hill near Thornton.

Roger Williams listed Thomas as one of those who stayed at home and protected his house and the town during the Indian hostilities in 1675. It is not known exactly where he lived at this time.

For a time, Thomas Fenner conducted a tavern and store in his home.
Fenner, Major, Esquire Thomas I (I07840)

1186 Captain John Waterman, fourth child of John & Anne (Olney) Waterman, was a master mariner. His last years were lived in Coventry, and the first town meetings for that town were held in his home. He died at Coventry in 1751, at 53 years of age, when he was thrown from his horse and drowned while fording Still River in a blinding snowstorm (info. from "Descendants of Roger Williams" by Dorothy Higson White). WATERMAN, Captain John (I02089)

1187 Captain Luke Brodhead served on the staff of General Lafayette during the Revolutionary War. Brodhead, Captain Luke (I05648)

1188 Captain Samuel Tillinghast wrote in his diary for 25 Aug 1765, "Last night died Col. Randall Holden with a short illness, sick but a few days" (Tillinghast Diary, p. 386). Holden, Ensign Randall III (I04909)

1189 Captain Tillinghast kept a diary for several years, in which he wrote in detail about the daily weather, and in less detail about his comings and goings, town and church events, and deaths and burials. It provides us a window into the culture of the day. This diary has been edited by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg and published by the RI Genealogical Society.

At his funeral on 30 July 1787, Elder John Gorton preached on Revelation 22:14.
Tillinghast, Captain Samuel (I02474)

1190 Carder & Alice had 9 children including a set of twin girls.

Carder and Alice were cousins.

The Hazard Family Bible shows Carder having an earlier marriage to Alice Hull. This needs more research to confirm. However, the Hull Family in America shows Alice Hull as marrying Gardener Hazard, so this may really be Carder, not Gardiner. It also shows two sons born to her, surname Hazard. I am adding this data to the tree with the note that it is not yet confirmed.
Hazard, Carder (I15088)

1191 Caroline was "of James of Jamestown."

From the records of the First Baptist Church of Providence, RI: Mrs. Caroline E. (Yerrington) Remington Feb. 29, 1844, L (letter?) Nov. 21, 1878, Er (?) Descendant of Chad Brown. W. of Daniel S.
