 #   Notes   Linked to
2501 I am making an assumption that her maiden name was Manchester. The reason for this is that in the 1850 Federal Census, William Manchester age 74 is living with Gardner & Martha and their two children at Tiverton, RI. Manchester, Martha (I00768)

2502 I am making an assumption that his middle initial stands for Fillmore, and that he was named for the new President of the US at the time he was born. Hopkins, Millard Fillmore (I12193)

2503 I am making an assumption that John Slack, age 40 in the 1881 census, living at 20 The Lawn, with his wife Charlotte, 32, is the son of Gilbert & Ann Slack. His age seems to be a year or so off, but that may not be unusual. In 1861, the Gilbert Slack family was living at 26 The Lawn, so perhaps John stayed in that area when he married.

In 1891 they are at 8 Club Row, Mansfield. Their daughter, Elizabeth, is age 25. Nearby is John's widowed sister-in-law, Ann, and her three children who are still at home.

In 1901 this couple are ages 61 & 51, living at 90 Nottingham Rd., Mansfield.
Slack, John (I00449)

2504 I am making an assumption that Lydia's middle initial "A" stood for Alice, and that she was known by that name. The Durfee genealogy book shows an Alice Remington, born to John & Hannah about this year, who married Amanezer James Durfee (see book The Descendants of Thomas Durfee, p. 352, by William Field Reed).

In my research at New Bedford I jotted down the date of death for an Alice (Remington) Durfee, 30 May 1878 at Tiverton, age 37 (don't have source noted). This seems to be this individual.

Alice Remington became guardian for Nathan & Harriet Remington after the death of both John & Albert.
Remington, Lydia Alice (I05880)

2505 I am making an assumption that Maggie's surname was Barry, based on the marriage entry. The marriage record gives her parents' names as Garrett and Catherine. Barry, Margaret Maggie Frances (I00179)

2506 I am making an assumption that Melvin belongs in this family group. He and his young wife are living next door to Nathaniel & Laura in the 1850 Federal Census at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY. Clarke, Melvin Remington (I11572)

2507 I am making an assumption that Oliver belongs in this family group. In the 1850 Federal Census, he and his family are living near Amos H. Gorton and his family at Huntington, Chittenden, VT. Oliver has a son named Amos. Gorton, Oliver (I13221)

2508 I am making an assumption that Polly, Jeremiah's wife in the 1850 Federal Census, is his second wife, and not Harriet. Unknown, Polly (I13353)

2509 I am making an assumption that S. F. Remington, born in CT, is a son of Almon & Harriet, although I have not found proof of this yet. He had children named Almon & Harriet, and fits the time frame of their family.

In the Federal Census of 1860, S. F. & Eliza J. Remington are living at Barton, Orleans Co., VT. They have two children: Almon E. & Rosa B.

In the 1870 Federal Census, S. F. & Martha Remington are living at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA. There are three children in the household: Almond, Rosa B., & Harriet.
Remington, Samuel F. (I16110)

2510 I am making an assumption that she died at Ashford, where she was living in 1880. Remington, Patty (I07986)

2511 I am making an assumption that she is the Abigail Remington who married Richard Swift on 2 December 1835 at New Bedford, MA.

An infant, William A. Swift, is buried in the Remington-Peirce family plot at Rural Cemetry in New Bedford, MA. I am entering him as a son of Richard & Abigail, subject to further research. I haven't found any other Swift connection to the family, other than the above marriage record.
Remington, Abigail "Abbie" (I05157)

2512 I am making an assumption that Silvia is the daughter of Joseph Remington of Wallingford, VT, because she was born in Wallingford. (needs further research) Remington, Silvia (I07992)

2513 I am making an assumption that the "Levi, of Ezekiel" in the marriage entry belongs in this family group, because the dates fit. Also, the names of their children reflect the names of the previous generation. Family F00708

2514 I am making an assumption that the entries for Benjamin Franklin Remington in the church records of the First Baptist Church of North Adams, MA, pertain to this individual. His sister, Abigail, is also listed among the members.

Benjamin F. Remington Bapt 1819 Died at Peterboro NY Apr 4, 1866 aged 67 yrs.
Remington, Benjamin Franklin (I04043)

2515 I am making an assumption that the following data for Frank pertains to a son of William & Lydia Lippitt, although I can't find this family group when Frank is a child. I think Frank must be a son of William because his son is named Burch, probably after Catherine Burch, William's mother.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Frank S. Lippitt is age 38, b PA, and living at Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. He is married to Sarah and has two children, Burch & Felicia, ages 6 & 4. In 1910, Frank S. is 48, b PA, and living at Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH. Frank & Sarah have two children: Burch 16, and Felicia 14. However, it says that both of his parents were born in RI, but this is incorrect, and is different from the data in the 1920 census, which says that his father was born in PA and his mother in NY. In 1920 the family is still in Cleveland; Frank S. is 57, Sarah C. is 54, Burch M. is 25, and Felicia Belle is 24.

Frank is a portrait artist with his own studio.
Lippitt, Frank S. (I15938)

2516 I am making an assumption that the George Remington, b. RI, living in Washington, Wyoming Co., PA in the 1850, 1860, & 1870 Federal Censuses, is this George, since the time frame is right, and he does not appear anywhere in RI. I am also adding the information for his wife, children, and grandchildren, with the assumption this is the correct family group for them. (needs more research to confirm) Remington, George (I13659)

2517 I am making an assumption that the George W. Remington b. 1855 at Providence, RI, s/o Daniel & Caroline, is the same George W. Remington b.c.1855 in the 1880 Federal Census at Providence, RI, the head of the household for this family group. However, the census says George's parents were both born in RI, but Caroline was probably born in MA. (needs more research to confirm)

Also living with the family in 1880 is Almie's sister, Lizzie Chapman, age 14.
Remington, George Walter (I05358)

2518 I am making an assumption that the Joseph and family in the 1860 and 1880 Federal Censuses at Ashford, NY is this individual and his family. Also in the same town are his brothers Copeland and Bela Remington and sister Patty Stevens. (There is the possibility that it may be another Joseph, since it is such a common name.)

In 1860 Joseph is 27, Laretta is 19, and their daughter Nellie is 4 months.

In 1880 they are living with married son Arthur and are identified as his parents; however, in the censuses of 1860 and 1870, Arthur is living with Bela & Silphina Remington and appears to be their son.
Remington, Joseph Asher Jr. (I10081)

2519 I am making an assumption that the listing for Sally Waterman (Arnold) Earle in the RI Cemetery Database is for this individual. Arnold, Sarah "Sally" (I13034)

2520 I am making an assumption that the marriage and death information here applies to this Joseph N. Remington, as I have found no other one to which they could apply. The only discrepancy is the birth date from MI/NY/Ohio descendants, which they have as February 1763. As such discrepancies are frequently found, it is only one of many factors to consider. This family group is a subject of ongoing research, and corrections are welcomed.

From Joseph's Rev. War Pension file: On 22 April 1818, Joseph N. Remington, formerly of Rhode Island but of New York State at this time, said he was 55 years old. (Later he went to Ohio, around Sept 1839, as noted in the file.) His sworn statement says he enlisted 3 Jan 1781 at Warwick, RI. He was honorably discharged at Saratoga, NY, on 3 Jan 1784, where he was present at the taking of Lord Cornwallis. Joseph's pension statement was signed with an X. A statement dated 28 June 1820 states that Joseph lives in the town of Alfred, NY, in Allegany Co. At that time he stated that he was a farmer, that he had no real estate, and that his wife of fifty years of age was very infirm. He himself is subject to rheumatism. He names his six children as follows: Daniel 18, Potter 14, John 10, Loasie 16, Charlotte 12, & Fanny 6. There is also reference to a note due him in the amount of 8.25 from Thomas Remington; no relationship is specified, but this could be his father.

According to information provided by descendant Carol Burford:

Joseph served for 7 years in the Revolutionary War, including Saratoga. He came as a pioneer to Allegany County, NY.

1810 census: Plymouth, Chenango Co., NY
1818: applied for military pension; had enlisted in RI and served in the Revolutionary War
1820 census: Alfred, Allegany Co., NY
1830 census: Independence, Allegany Co., NY
1840 census: Groton Twp., Erie County, OH (Joseph and his wife were living with daughter Charlotte and family)
Remington, Joseph Nichols (I05495)

2521 I am making an assumption that the marriage entry in Arnold's "Vital Records of RI" applies to this couple and this family group, because the dates fit. They were married by Jonathan Niles, Justice. Family F00690

2522 I am making an assumption that the marriage record for "Richard, of Francis, of NK" belongs in this family group, to this particular Francis.. Briggs, Richard (I10457)

2523 I am making an assumption that the Mary Elizabeth (Remington) Stiles in the RI Cemetery Datanbase is the Mary E. Remington in this family. Her grave is in North Smithfield, and her age agrees. Remington, Mary Elizabeth (I10748)

2524 I am making an assumption that the Mr. Mitchell who is Margaret's husband is Samuel, based on the birth data for John. Mitchell, Samuel (I07215)

2525 I am making an assumption that the Philip Sweet mentioned as a son in the will of Philip Sweet (dated 12 Dec 1709 at Warwick) is the same Philip Sweet mentioned as a father in the will of Pentecost Sweet (dated 5 April 1760 at Warwick). The dates seem to fit, and some of the children's names are the same in succeeding generations. However, this needs more research to confirm. Sweet, Philip II (I01921)

2526 I am making an assumption that the Philip Sweet, Jr., who married Lydia Rice is the son of Philip Sweet who is mentioned as father in the will of Pentecost Sweet. In that will, Pentecost also mentions that his brohter Philip has two sons, Pentecost & John. Sweet, Philip III (I02579)

2527 I am making an assumption that the Richard Fenner who married Abigail Sheldon is the same individual as Richard Fenner, son of Thomas.

Richard's will, dated 8 Sept 1772, mentions his wife Abigail, and children Richard, Jeremiah, John, Arthur, & Lydia.

It is not known whether any of the children were by his second wife, also named Abigail.
Fenner, Esquire Richard (I10847)

2528 I am making an assumption that these dates for John W. Arnold in the RI Cemetery Database belong to this individual. Arnold, John Waterman (I13031)

2529 I am making an assumption that these dates in the RI Cemetery Database belong to this particular Caleb Rice. Rice, Caleb (I12139)

2530 I am making an assumption that this Betsey P. Remington, buried in the family plot at Pocasset Cemetery, is the wife of George T. Remington, also buried there.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Betsey P. Remington is age 47, living at Warwick, RI. With her are Byron D., 20; and Ella F., 13.

Betsey Remington is age 55 in the 1880 Federal Census at Warwick, Kent, RI, with her daughter "Elesie" age 23 (could it be Ella C.?).

There is no other Betsey Remington to be found in RI, listed in the census at this time.
Knowles, Betsey P. (I10546)

2531 I am making an assumption that this Comfort is the one mentioned as a daughter in the will of William Peirce of East Greenwich. This will was written and dated 15 July 1791, proved 27 August 1791. I have used this information in estimating her birth date.

If the above assumption is correct, she was a daughter, probably the youngest, of William & Catherine. Her siblings, as mentioned in the will, were Phebe (w/o Caleb Andrews), Sarah (w/o John Place), Deborah, & Mary.
Peirce, Comfort (I06247)

2532 I am making an assumption that this couple, Cyrus & Eliza, living on Laurel Hill Ave., Providence, RI, in 1910, belongs to this family group. The age is right for Cyrus, but no middle initial is given. Remington, Cyrus H. (I11108)

2533 I am making an assumption that this date of death in the RI Cemetery Database is for this particular Benjamin. His grave is in the same cemetery as Conrad, his brother. Ellery, Benjamin (I09744)

2534 I am making an assumption that this death notice is for this particular Caleb Remington, because his age at death agrees with his birth year, and it is Massachusetts. (needs verification -- and see note below)

From "Berkshire Co., Mass., Probate Index, 1761 to 1900" page 243: Caleb Remington, Pittsfield, Will, May 2 1809, #2634.
Remington, Caleb (I08241)

2535 I am making an assumption that this Ethel C. Remington in the 1920 and 1930 censuses is the wife of this particular Frank A. Remington born in RI, because he is the correct age. This is subject to verification -- additional documentation needed. But their daughter's name Ruth may be a link to Frank's grandmother and aunt, both named Ruth. Unknown, Ethel C. (I11467)

2536 I am making an assumption that this family group in the 1930 Federal Census, living in Providence, RI, belongs to this particular Eugene, son of Levi. Remington, Eugene A. C. (I14410)

2537 I am making an assumption that this family in the 1871 & 1881 British Census belongs to him. The year and place of birth fit; plus, a daughter is named Ellen, and my grandma used to speak of a cousin "Nellie Slack." Elizabeth seems to be the "servant" age 18 who is living with Joseph & Elizabeth Coleman and family in the 1891 census.

In 1871 they are at 1 Union St.; in 1881 they are at 47 Union St., Mansfield.

In 1891 Ann is a widow, still at 47 Union St.

The son John, born c1860, apparently is the one who is married to Mary, and with whom his cousin Florrie Coleman (my great aunt) is living in 1901.
Slack, William (I00454)

2538 I am making an assumption that this family, listed in the 1850 Federal Census at Becket, Berkshire Co., MA, belongs to this particular William, son of John & Sarah, because the age is right and he is living near them.

In the 1855 MA Census, the family is still at Becket: William E. Remington 44 farmer MA, Rob[?] F. 39 NY, Leverett 19 MA, George F. 18 MA, Orlina 11 MA, Fanny C. 5 MA, and Franklin C. 1 MA.

In the Federal Census of 1860, the family is living at Hillsdale, Columbia Co., NY. The household consists of: William 49, Roby 43, Swutt C. (?) 24, Orlina M. 16, Fanny C. 9, & Charles F. 6; all b MA.

In the 1870 Federal Census, William E. Remington, age 58 b. MA, Roby F., 53 NY, with son Charles F., 16 NY, are living at Pharsalia, Chenango Co., New York.

I don't know if the two younger children belong to the first wife or the second. (this family needs more research)
Remington, William Edwin (I06112)

2539 I am making an assumption that this Frances, wife/widow of George Northup, is the wife of this particular George Northup. She is mentioned in the will of her mother, Patience Congdon, who died in 1800. This will also mentions the names of Frances's three daughters. Northup, George (I13929)

2540 I am making an assumption that this gravestone for John H. K. Remington is for John D. Remington, as the year of birth matches, and he is buried with this family. Remington, John D. (I14495)

2541 I am making an assumption that this Henry, husband of Sally, is the one who was the son of Henry Greene b. 1754, because the dates fit. Greene, Henry Jr. (I03971)

2542 I am making an assumption that this is a brother to William, because their families are living next door to each other in the 1850 Federal Census at Mundy, Genesee Co., MI. According to the census data, William & Jacob were both born in NY, two years apart. Alternatively, they could be cousins. However, others of this Allen family are in the area. Allen, Jacob (I11527)

2543 I am making an assumption that this is Rev. William Northup, who died 31 May 1839, according to the North Kingstown church records in James N. Arnold's Vital Record of RI. Northup, Rev. William (I13974)

2544 I am making an assumption that this is the Charles Remington b. c1842 MI, listed in the 1870 Federal Census at Atlas, Genesee County, MI. He is married and has one son.

In 1880 the family is at Fenton, Genesee Co., MI, with two children.
Remington, Charles B. (I11551)

2545 I am making an assumption that this is the same Josiah who is listed in the 1820 & 1830 Federal Census as residing at Tolland, Hampden County, MA. This is likely because his father Anthony is there at the same time; Josiah is listed along with Charles, Anthony, John, & Holden.

Perhaps he moved to Ohio around the time his father did, c 1833.

The following note is from Karen Hermann:
"The land records for Josiah Remington place him in Tolland, MA, in Oct 1833 and in Freedom, OH, in June 1834; since his father Anthony died in Freedom on 31 Nov 1833, according to the Anthony's pension record, I believe Josiah was the one who brought him to Ohio. He stated in an affidavit in 1823 that Josiah was his only means of support."

Seaman's Protection Certificate #4263, Customs District New London, issued 18 May 1807: Josiah Remington -- birthplace Granville, MA; age 22, complexion dark, height 5'11", little finger of left hand crooked.

Remington, Josiah (I06447)

2546 I am making an assumption that this Jemima Tarbox, wife of John Briggs, belongs in this family group -- subject to further documentation. Tarbox, Jemima (I07464)

2547 I am making an assumption that this marriage entry belongs to this Albert F. Remington. Family F02047

2548 I am making an assumption that this marriage entry belongs to this Alice, because she would be the right age, and my data has no other one of this time period. Family F02322

2549 I am making an assumption that this marriage entry belongs to this Charles Carr. Family F01594

2550 I am making an assumption that this marriage entry belongs to this Phebe A. Remington. Family F02049
