3401 In the 1850 Federal Census, James & Lucy are living at Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA. I don't see that their son is with them, so perhaps he died young.

In 1870 James C. & Lucy are still there, and James is a saloon keeper. In the household are two young women, Minnie Graves 18 NY & Louisa Rockwood 24 MA.

James's birth is recorded at Northbridge, but was at Mendon.
Remington, James Congdon (I05883)

3402 In the 1850 Federal Census, James & Mary Hambly are living at Providence, RI, with their two young daughters. James is a tailor. I have made an assumption that James wife, Mary, is the "Mary Hambly, wife of James Hambly" who is mentioned in the will of Robert Fish as his daughter. Hambly, James (I17916)

3403 In the 1850 Federal Census, James and family are living in Savoy, Berkshire, MA. Next door is his father Benjamin, age 88, and brother Aaron and family. Remington, James Sr. (I11311)

3404 In the 1850 Federal Census, James M. Remington is age 25, a wheelwright, living in Glocester with John & William Hawkins and their families, wheelwright & carriagesmith.

In the 1870 Federal Census, James M. & Elizabeth Remington, ages 46 CT & 42 MA, are living at Taunton, MA. They have a daughter Cora E., age 7 RI. James is a Gas fitter.

In the 1880 Federal Census, James and family are living on Summer St. in Taunton, Bristol County, MA: Jas. M. is 56, Maria E. is 52, and Cora E. is 16. His widowed mother Sarah, 80, is also with them.
Remington, James Monroe (I08864)

3405 In the 1850 Federal Census, James R. Newbury is age 44, living at Greenwich, Washington Co., NY. In the household are his (second) wife, Jane, age 30, and children Henry, 16; Sarah H. 11; Anne E., 8; and James M., 4 mos.; also David Remington, 78. All were born in NY except for David, who was born in RI.

In the 1860 Federal Census, James is living at Greenwich, Washington Co., NY, and appears to be widowed. In the household are his two (assumed) daughters (Anna & Jane), and his father-in-law, David Remington, age 88.

From the data, it appears that James married two sisters, Amy & Jane Remington. The son Henry must have been born of Amy, his first wife. This is supported by later census data that show Henry's family to have a daughter Amy, probably named after his mother.
Newbury, James R. (I08966)

3406 In the 1850 Federal Census, Jas & Harriett Kilborn, ages 54 VT & 42 SC, are living in Claiborne Parish, LA. They have 10 children ranging in age from 22 to 3 months; all children were born in MS or LA. Kilbourn, James B. (I22174)

3407 In the 1850 Federal Census, Jeffrey & Sally are living at Coventry, RI. With them are their three daughters, and Sarah Bates, age 86, probably Sally's aunt. Lewis, Jeffrey Sheldon (I12634)

3408 In the 1850 Federal Census, Jenks & Phebe are living at Easton, Washington Co., NY. In the household are their children George, 21; and Lake, 11; also Jenks's father Gardner, 80. They are still there in 1860, when Gardner is 90. Remington, Jenks (I09447)

3409 In the 1850 Federal Census, Jeremiah & Hannah are living at Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY, with their four children; two others have died by then. Jeremiah is a farmer, age 48. His son Oscar, age 26, is shown as a merchant, while Daniel, 18, is "farming." The family is next door to Allen & Palmyra Remington and their two children, Lois 17 & Oscar 13. Even though he is younger, Allen Remington age 46 is actually Jeremiah's uncle, youngest brother of Jeremiah's mother, Martha (Remington) Sheffield.

On 1 April 1860, Jeremiah & Hannah signed a deed selling a parcel of land to Gardner Marsh, Jr. This deed was written and witnessed by Edmund Remington, Justice of the Peace, and was recorded by the town clerk on 17 May 1860 at 2 PM. Edmund Remington was Jeremiah's first cousin, being a son of Jonathan Remington, brother of Jeremiah's mother Martha. The land defined in the deed had been previously bought by Martha (Remington) Sheffield on 8 March 1825, from the Wardwells and the Manns. It consisted of 71 acres, and was purchased by Martha for $599.60. When she died in August 1828, Jeremiah took possession of this land, and lived on it with his family from that time until he sold it in 1860. (A copy of this deed is recorded at Jefferson County, NY, Deed Book 142, pp. 335 & 336; a photocopy of these pages was kindly furnished by Mary Jones of Graeagle, CA, a descendant).
Sheffield, Jeremiah (I11633)

3410 In the 1850 Federal Census, Jeremiah, 44, and Polly, 45 (his second wife?), are living in Chester, Warren, NY, with daughters Sylvia 18 & Mary 6. They are near Jeremiah's brother William and his family, and their father, Joseph.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Jeremiah & Polly are ages 64 & 65, living at Chester, Warren Co., NY.

In 1880, Jerry & Polly Remington, ages 74 & 75, are still living at Chester, Warren Co., NY. Jerry is a shoemaker.

In his daughter Fanny's marriage record at Lowell, MA, he is called Jereboam.
Remington, Jeremiah (I07995)

3411 In the 1850 Federal Census, Jesse & Patty are living at Starksborough, Addison Co., VT. They have three children in the household: Eunice, Loyal, & Joel. I think the two older children are biological children of Joel, Patty's first husband and brother of her second. They are near to Sydnia (?) & Lorinda Sayles and family, possibly related to Patty. This household includes Polly Sayles, 80 RI.

In 1860, Jesse & Martha are still at Starksborough, with son Joel, 15.

One online genealogy has his date of death as 8 March 1875 at Huntington, VT. I have not been able to find him in the 1870 census.
Remington, Jesse (I15260)

3412 In the 1850 Federal Census, Johanna Miller is age 80, living with Garriet & Mary Miller at Argyle, Washington Co., NY. Unknown, Johanna (I13889)

3413 In the 1850 Federal Census, John & Betsey, ages 59 & 57, are living at Tiverton, RI. Five children are in the household with them: Amanda, Frederick, Albert, John A., & William W.

John died at age 83 (RIDI).
Manchester, John (I18882)

3414 In the 1850 Federal Census, John & Eliza are living at Ravenna, Portage Co., OH. They have four children: Mary A. 12, Joseph A. 11, Lewis R. 7, & Sarah C. 5. Ranney, John Lewis (I18600)

3415 In the 1850 Federal Census, John & Emma are living at Tiverton, RI, with their six sons. Also in the household is May Lake, 14. They are next door to Isaac & Elizabeth Sherman as well as Ruth Lake, who is living in the Sherman household. Two doors down are Seabury & Phebe Peirce and their four children. A few years later, Alice Peirce will marry Charles Hicks.

The Hicks family and several of their sons, who marry and have children, remain in Tiverton, where they can be found in future censuses.
Hicks, John Russell (I18417)

3416 In the 1850 Federal Census, John & Nancy Thompson, ages 77 & 52, are living at Jericho, Chittenden Co., VT. Living with them are daughter Lucy and her husband, Orange Remington, and also Orange's nephew, Stephen Remington.

From "Ancesters of Linda Nicholson" online geneaogy (needs verification):
Father: John Thompson (Abt 1771-1854), Mother: Nancy Ware (1788-1863) 2250

Thompson, John (I18162)

3417 In the 1850 Federal Census, John & Roby Dennis are living at Tiverton, Newport Co., RI. His age is given as 70, and hers is 65. He is a laborer. This census was taken at Tiverton on 20 Sept 1850. Obviously she was older than that, since her first son was born in 1800. Probably both of their ages have been estimated; she is more like 70 and perhaps he is 70 or older.

Please note that John's parentage as shown on this family tree has not yet been proven. More research is needed to confirm the data.

He is very possibly the son named John Dennis who was born to Obediah & Ruth (Fish, d/o Ebenezer) Dennis on 18 Aug 1775 at Tiverton, RI. (Obadiah, who married second to Phebe, was a son of Tabitha, who was a daughter of Robert & Susannah [Briggs] Dennis.) However, there was another John Dennis born at Tiverton 16 Apr 1767 to Robert & Joanna. This needs more research.

I tend to think that John was the son of Obediah & Ruth (Fish) Dennis, of Tabitha Dennis, of Robert & Susannah (Briggs) Dennis, of Robert & Sarah (Howland) Dennis.

If he is the older John, then he is son of Robert & Joanna (Hilliard) Dennis, of John & Hannah (Wilbor) Dennis, of Robert & Susannah (Briggs) Dennis, of Robert & Sarah (Howland) Dennis. If he is this particular John Dennis, then his age should be 83 in the 1850 census. For this reason I lean toward his being the son of Obediah.

I obtained the names of some of John & Roby's children from "Genealogy of a Part of the Wodell Family" by Eli Wodell p 67 (Google Books).
DENNIS, John (I22399)

3418 In the 1850 Federal Census, John 40 & Julia A. Remington 36 and their three children are living at Grand Blanc, Genesee Co., MI. In the 1860 Federal Census, John & Julia are still living at Grand Blanc, Genesee Co., MI. Their son Charles, age 18, is in the household. They are living near daughter Pamelia Gilbert and her family. Also in the same town in both of these censuses is John's brother Levi and family.

John died at age 97.
Remington, John Auburn (I11547)

3419 In the 1850 Federal Census, John A. Manchester is age 41 RI, a carpenter. His wife is Alice 42 RI. they are living at Lenox, Madison Co., NY.

In the 1870 Federal Census, they are still at Lenox.

3420 In the 1850 Federal Census, John N. Remington is age 15, living with his mother and brother William, at Warren, Bristol Co., RI.

In the 1870 Federal Census, M. John Remington is age 35 MA, and his wife Belle is 31 RI. They are living at Providence, and have a daughter Ida one month old.

In 1900, John & Isabella are living at East Providence, RI. Their daughter Ida and her husband Thomas Tarbox are in the household with them.

John and his brother William may have married sisters, as both wives have the surname Cole.
Remington, John Newton (I05674)

3421 In the 1850 Federal Census, John Remington age 56 is living in Easton, Washington Co., NY. In the household are Noah S., 27 (?); Morgan, 25; & Hannah, 24. Noah is his son, but Morgan is probably a son of Benjamin & Phebe, who have both died. Hannah is probably Morgan's first wife.

George and John Remington were in the war of 1812, listed with soldiers from Easton, NY, 156th NY Infantry, 16th Brigade of the 10th Division.
Remington, John (I05794)

3422 In the 1850 Federal Census, John S. & Eve Remington are living in Easton, Washington Co., NY, with children Ellen, Isaac, & Norman. Also in the household is James Remington, 27. In 1860 the family is still in Easton with children Ellen, Isaac, Norman, Phoebe, Clarence, Sylvester, & Lewis. In 1870 the family is still in Easton, with children Clara, Frank, & Jessie. Remington, John S. (I08992)

3423 In the 1850 Federal Census, Jonathan B. & Elisabeth P. Munro are ages 28 & 26, living at Bristol, RI. In 1860 they are ages 38 & 30. Munroe, Jonathan B. (I19109)

3424 In the 1850 Federal Census, Joseph & Sarah Devol, ages 79 & 65, both b RI, are living at Bristol, Morgan Co., OH. They are with (presumed) son Lorenzo (Loren?) & his wife Lucinda and their four children.

In 1860, Joseph & Sarah, ages 87 & 72, are still with their son and family at Bristol, OH, and the household now includes five children.

Loren & Lucinda Devol are still in Morgan Co. in 1870, but Joseph is not with them; he passed away in 1863.
Devol, Joseph (I18032)

3425 In the 1850 Federal Census, Joseph 14 RI is in the household of Caleb & Joannah Remington in Johnston, Providence Co., RI. Caleb is Joseph's great uncle, his paternal grandmother's brother. Mathewson, Joseph Henry (I24067)

3426 In the 1850 Federal Census, Joseph is age 20, living with his father and brother's family at Oswego, NY.

He is probably the Joseph Remington, age 46 VT, married to Phoebe age 31 NY, and living at Forestville, Door Co., WI. They have a daughter Amy, age 1 WI.

In the 1880 Federal Census, he is probably the Joseph Remington, age 49, living at Jamestown, Stutsman Co., Dakota Territory. The census data says his father was born VT and his mother MA, which would also be correct for this Joseph. It says he himself was born VT. He is married to Phoebe, age 43 NY, and has three children: Emma 11, Georgie 6 (has the measles), & Izara 1; children b WI.

Joseph is still there, age 69, in the 1900 Federal Census (now it is North Dakota). His date of birth as given as Oct 1829, which is correct). However, it says his mother was born in England. His wife Phebe is age 60, but now it says she was born in Canada. It also says she has had 12 children, 3 of whom are still living. They have been married 40 years. Daughter Amy (Emma?) is with them, with two of her daughters, born in MI. The family is living on First Avenue North.

Joseph's date and place of death were found on a family tree at Ancestry.com. I have not verified them. He is in the 1900 census, so he died after that.
Remington, Joseph (I18195)

3427 In the 1850 Federal Census, Julius is 6 months old, living at Wallingford, VT, with his parents John & Laura Remington.

His name appears variously in the census records as Julius K., J.T., and John T. He was probably named after his father, John Julius Remington (who arrears in census records as John J.B., John B., & Julius J.).

I am making an assumption that he is the J.T. Remington who married Kate A. Kelsey on 30 September, year unknown. His age and location of residence agrees with the family information.

In May 1880 Julius T. Remington became a partner in the purchase and establishment of the Pioneer Pulp Mill in Wallingford, VT. Later that year the partnership was dissolved.

In 1880, this couple are living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT. In 1900 and 1910 they are at Bennington, Bennington Co., VT.

According to Pat Boyden's genealogy, John's name is John Tasso Remington, and he was born 22 Dec 1849 at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT.

The 1900 census data says he was born in Dec 1849. This agrees with the 1850 census data.

I found an online newspaper image which has a brief entry about this individual, although it calls him T. J. Remington of Bennington, VT. From The Evening News, Ada, OK, 16 & 20 Feb 1904: "T. J. Remington of Bennington, VT, is the owner of a handkerchief which his greatuncle, Jerameel Doty, carried when the latter was a soldier in the revolution and later in the the war of 1812. It was used at one time by the soldier to bind up his own wounds." According to my data Jorathmiel Doty was his great-grandfather, although I do not have proof of this.

(?In 1850 his name appears to be "Passo." One genealogy has his name as Tasso.)

"The Congregational Church of Ludlow is significant as possibly the only example of an intact authentic Shingle Style church in Vermont. It was constructed in 1891-92, and retains its historic integrity . . . The church was completed in April 1892 at a total cost of $10,918, including furnishings. J.T. Remington of Wallingford, Vermont, was the construction foreman."

3430 In the 1850 Federal Census, Levi is age 45, b. CT. He is living at Grand Blanc, Genesee Co., MI, with his wife "Sarah" and ten of their children. They are near John 40 & Julia A. Remington 36 and their three children. They are still there in 1860, when the family consists of: Levi, 54; Acinith, 45; Isaac, 18; Thomas, 17; William, 15; Peter, 13; Norman, 9; David, 2; Rachel, 24; & Lucy, 17; also widowed son Joseph, 26; and his two children, Cora, 4; & Levi, 2.

In 1870 the family is at Clayton, Genesee, MI: Levi, 64; Asenath, 54; Rachel, 34; Norman, 14; Peter, 22; Julia, 19 (assume Peter's wife?). They are next door to Sabestin, Laura, and their son Justin.

In the 1880 census, Levi is still at Clayton, Genesee Co., MI, age 74, b. CT, with wife "Asenith" age 64, b. NY. In the household is son Norman 24, his wife Emma 25, and their two children; also adult children Peter & Rachel.

Don Appleby's genealogy web site adds a son Franklin to these children. However, I don't think Franklin belongs in this family group, because he is in the 1880 census as age 11, a nephew listed in the household of Joseph & Amanda.

A Remington manuscript in the Special Collections at NE Hist Gen Soc includes a son Franklin.

Levi died at age 81 y 7 m 4 d.
Remington, Levi (I11523)

3431 In the 1850 Federal Census, Levi Manchester is age 20, living at Tiverton, RI, with his maternal grandparents George & Sarah Durfee, and other family members.

In 1880 Levi, age 48, is married to Isabella, age 42, b Scotland. They have four children in the home: Jessie May, Martha, Ida Isabel, & Roland.

In the 1900 census, Levi's birth date is given as Mar 1830, and he is age 70. Isabella is 62. With them are Ida B. & Rowland L. Also in the household is Arthur, age 30, his wife Grace, 26, and their son Arthur W., 2.
Manchester, Levi (I18900)

In 1860, Lyman & Sally B. Remington, ages 47 & 45, are still at Scituate, RI. Albert & Maria Wheeler, ages 20 & 16, are with them. Maria is their daughter. Next door is another married daughter, Angeline Smith, with her husband Albert and infant son Walter.

In 1870 Lyman & Sarah B. Remington are ages 56 & 57, still living at Scituate.

In 1880 Lyman & Sarah Remington, ages 70 & 68, are living at Cranston, RI.
Remington, Lyman (I17764)

3438 In the 1850 Federal Census, Mahala Paine is age 35, living at Smithfield, RI, in the Aldrich household. Also there are her mother, sisters, brother-in-law, and nephews & nieces, for a total of nine individuals.

In 1860 she is Mahala Lewis, age 45, living at Mendon, Worcester Co., MA. She has remarried to Griffin Lewis, age 47 in the census.

In 1870 they are back in Smithfield, RI, ages 66 & 55, and in 1880 they are at Woonsocket, RI, as are the other two sisters.

Notes from Prudence Fish, a descendant: "Mahala Remington married Smith Paine who later abandoned her and apparently went to Missouri where he had another family."

After the death of her second husband, "she moved from Smithfield, Rhode Island, to Oxford, Maine, and lived with her only child, George Paine, and his wife and son."
Remington, Mahala (I17752)

3440 In the 1850 federal census, Maria Rounds is age 31 CT, living in New Beford with her father, son (assumed), and other family members, including a sister and her husband, and likely a brother. See notes for her father Henry Hazard.

Her marriage record to Peter Fraley names her father as Henry Hazard, no mother named.

See notes for husbands Joseph Rounds and Peter Fraley.
Hazard, Maria M. (I28786)

3441 In the 1850 Federal Census, Martha Remington is age 79, living at Smithfield, RI. She is living with Robert & Martha Aldrich and their two children, Orville & Ellen. Also in the household are Mahala (Remington) Paine, Ann (Remington) Follett, and her two children, William & Lucia. Mowry, Martha (I17748)

3442 In the 1850 Federal Census, Martin Remington is age 26 NY, living with Harry & Lucinda Bell at Meredith, Delaware Co., NY. Presumably Lucinda is Martin's older sister.

In 1860, he appears to be the Martin Remington, age 34 and a farmer, living at Tompkins, Delaware Co., NY, with Joseph & Delia Rogers, both age 32. I have made an assumption that Delia Rogers is Martin's sister.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Martin Remington is age 45, living at Tompkins, NY, with his wife Phoebe, 23, and son Eldridge, 2.

In 1880 the family is living at Deposit, Delaware Co., NY: Martin 55, Phebe 33, Hattie 8, & Everett 4.
Remington, Martin (I20183)

3443 In the 1850 Federal Census, Mary 18, Ruth 12, & Harvey 9 (Foot) are living with stepfather Alva Remington and family at Henrietta, Monroe Co., NY. Their older sister Sarah married Alva's son, William. Foote, Harvey Jr. (I11410)

3445 In the 1850 Federal Census, Mary 18, Ruth 12, & Harvey 9 (Foot) are living with stepfather Alva Remington and family at Henrietta, Monroe Co., NY. Their older sister Sarah married Alva's son, William. Foote, Mary J. (I11408)

3446 In the 1850 Federal Census, Mary B. Cogshall is age 36, living at Tiverton, RI. With her are three sons: John 6, Thomas 4, & Joshua 1. Nearby is Phebe Cogshall, 72, probably her mother-in-law.

In the 1860 Federal Census, she and her husband, David Shaw, have two Martin children from her previous marriage. They also have a one-year-old daughter, Meribah. (see notes for David Shaw)

In the 1870 Federal Census, Meribah Shaw, age 53, is still living at Tiverton. In the household are two sons from a previous marriage, Thomas 24 and Joshua P. 21 (?) Coggeshall; and two of her children by David Shaw, Meribah A. 11 & James A. Shaw 8.

In 1880 she is age 63, still at Tiverton; marital status is widowed. Still with her are three sons: Thomas D. Coggeshall, 34; Joshua P. Coggeshall, 31; and James A. Shaw, 18, a fisherman. They are living next door to son John S. Coggeshall and his family, including an uncle Stephen Manchester, probably Meribah's brother.

From the census data, Mary B. & Meribah appear to be the same individual. Her full name may have been Meribah Brayton Manchester. However, according to Carla Phillips' data, they are two distinct individuals. This needs more research to resolve.

3447 In the 1850 Federal Census, Morgan appears to be age 25 and living with John Remington age 56 (widower of Lucy Burton) and Noah S. Remington age 22 at Easton, Washington Co., NY. Morgan's first wife Hannah, age 24, is also there.

Morgan came to Mahaska County, Iowa, in 1855, and to Union County in 1863. In the 1860 Federal Census, Morgan & Matilda are living at Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa. In 1870 & 1880 they are at Jones, Union Co., Iowa.

3449 In the 1850 Federal Census, Nathan Remington is age 45, and living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, in the household of Alfred & Rebecca Hill or Hull. A notation on the census says he is insane.

The following quote is courtesy of Mary Lou Raftery, and excerpted from "People of Wallingford" by Birney C. Batcheller, Stephen Daye Press, Brattleboro, VT; p 207: "For many years the town of Wallingford provided for paupers by auctioning them off to the lowest bidder at the annual town meeting. There was one town charge named Nathan Remington. About 1840, Alfred Hull said he would take Nathan for the work he could do. So Nathan went to the Hull home for one year and remained there until he died in 1885. He was a strong, perfectly healthy man who had a strange mental twist, said to have been caused by being jilted by the girl of his choice. He was a good worker, especially good in caring for the oxen, pigs, and poultry. He was trustworthy and had an excellent memory. He was a familiar figure on the streets and called by name by most of the residents for very many years. In the Hull home his meals were served at a small table by a window in one corner of the big kitchen. The chair placed there was his place to sit. He could read and used to read the Herald aloud to Nancy McLaughlin, who did not know the alphabet, but was an excellent worker in the Hull kitchen for nearly twenty years. Whenever Nathan came to a word he could not pronounce he always said 'sunthin' or nother' and read on. He survived Mr. Hull by ten years and Mrs. Hull by four months but was cared for in the home. His funeral was held in the Hull home and he was buried at the south end of the Hull lot according to a promise given him by Mrs. Hull. A good-sized marble headstone was put at his grave, bearing his name, date of death, and probably age, 80 years."

An administrator's settlement of Nathan's will names known family members (including nephews) as follows: John Remington, Amos Remington, Jonathan Remington, Sylvia Perkins, Benjamin Gorton, Clarinda Warner, & Jane Conger; possibly two living brothers, John Remington & Jonathan Remington. 3450 In the 1850 Federal Census, Nicholas W. & Sarah G. Harrington, ages 26 & 31, are living at West Greenwich, RI. Children in the family are: Catherine G. B. 10, Pardon D. 7, Dimes R. 5, & Solomon W. 3. I am not sure if all of these children belong to both of these parents. They are next door, or with, Solomon Brown and family, probably Sarah's parents and siblings. Harrington, Nicholas W. (I20902)
