|
353 | Abby is identified as Abby Hambly in the vital records for son Holder W. D. Manchester. Genealogist John Redfern has suggested that she was Abigail Lake, based on the names of children Betsey & Cynthia, given names in the Lake family. There is a possibility that Philip Manchester married first to Abigail Lake, then second to Abby Hambly. No further evidence has yet been found to support this, however. (This family needs more research.) | Hambly, Abigail "Abby" (I12247)
|
354 | Abby Manchester died at age 61 y 11 m; cause of death was dropsy. | King, Abbie (I18490)

The RI Cemetery Database has an Abby Jane Remington buried in Cranston Historical Cemetery 2, with dates given as: c1823 - 31 Oct 1906. This must be the same individual. She is probably Abigail Luther, because a witness on the probate for Caleb is Addison Luther. | Luther, Abby Jane (I08887)

365 | Abigail Updike, wife of Capt. Lodowick, was baptized at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Narragansett/Wickford RI, on 11 Sep 1726 at age 63 (note: clinical baptism). From Findagrave.com: "There is no inscribed marker for Abigail in this cemetery, nor is there any record of her burial. However, her husband is known to be buried here, based on the obituary of their son Daniel, and Abigail was married to Lodowick for nearly 50 years, and died as his widow in this town. It is inconceivable that she would have been buried anywhere other than in the family cemetery near her husband. The birth year given is a crude approximation based on her probable year of marriage, and the death year is the year her will was proved. "Abigail was the daughter of Thomas Newton and Joan Smith of New Amsterdam, Long Island, and Fairfield, Connecticut. She was married about 1690 to her first cousin, Lodowick Updike, the son of Gilbert Updike and Katherine Smith. Her mother Joan and her husband's mother Katherine were sisters, both being daughters of Richard Smith of Cocumscussoc (known as Smith's Castle), Wickford, RI. "Abigail's will, dated 10 May 1742, and proved 8 May 1745, names daughter Catherine as executrix, and gives to son Daniel; to the seven children of her son Richard, deceased; to daughter Abigail Cooper; and also to her other three daughters Esther, Sarah, and Martha." | Newton, Abigail (I28545)

Dr. MacSparran in his diary (Sept 30th and Oct 4th 1744) speaks of the death of his wife's grandmother, at the great age of eighty-eight years. If Abigail was the daughter of Edward's second wife, Abigail, she must have been born after Edward who was born in 1658, son of Amey. | Richmond, Abigail (I02880)

377 | About 1817, Alvah moved with his father's family from VT to Henrietta, NY. Alvah was a Whig and Republican in politics and a consistent member of the West Henrietta Baptist Church. (above notes from "Reunion of Descendants of Alvah Remington, 1797-1888" at Online Collections at BYU) In the 1820 Federal Census, the three brothers -- Thomas, Silas, & Alva -- are listed at Henrietta, Monroe Co., NY. In the 1850 Federal Census, "Alva" & Emma (2nd wife) are living at Henrietta, Monroe, NY, with four of his children -- Mariah, Mary, Harriet, & Luther -- and three of her children by her first marriage, plus three other individuals -- possibly relatives. They are next door to Alvah's son William and Emma's daughter Sarah, who are married. In the 1870 Federal Census, Alvah & Emma are ages 72 & 66, living at Henrietta, Monroe Co., NY. Other family members are living nearby. In the 1880 Federal Census, Alvah is age 83, living at Shelby, Orleans Co., NY, with son Luther and his family. From the website of the West Henrietta Baptist Church: "Other families important to our church history began to arrive between 1815 and 1827 when the church worshiped in a log cabin on the river road. Alvah Remington came alone at 20 in 1817 and built a log cabin before marrying Mercy Gorton, the minister’s daughter. Alvah is memorialized in the stained glass window next to the piano. Among his grandsons were Harvey Remington, a prominent Rochester lawyer and judge who served on the boards of Colgate Rochester Divinity School and Fairport Baptist Home, and Frederic Remington, a well-known Rochester doctor." From "Biographies of Monroe County" "Alvah Remington, the fourth son of Thomas Remington, was born in Rupert, VT, July 25, 1797. About the year 1817 he removed with his father's family to Henrietta, NY, settling on the farm upon which all of his children were born. He married Mercy Gorton, daughter of Rev. Thomas Gorton, a Baptist clergyman, September 30, 1819. Thomas Gorton was a descendant of Samuel Gorton, who was prominent in the early history of Rhode Island. The descendants of Thomas Gorton are very numerous in Western New York, Michigan and other Western states. (See record of Martin Family of Henrietta). Mercy Gorton was the mother of all of Alvah Remington's children and she died Oct. 17, 1847. He married a second time, September 3, 1848, Amy Northrup Foote, widow of Harvey Foote. Amy was the descendant of Stephen Northrup, one of the prominent early settlers of Rhode Island. She was an aunt of President George W. Northrup of Chicago and who was at one time a professor of the Rochester Theological seminary and pastor of the First Baptist Church. Alvah Remington was one of the early members of the whig party and later a republican and lifelong member of West Henrietta Baptist Church. He died in West Henrietta, N. Y., October 4, 1888." 393 | According to "The Fenner Family," p. 16, she was a widow, Mary Cloyn, when she married Thomas Fenner. If this is correct, she must have been widowed young, not long after her first marriage. Based on this information, I have roughly estimated her date of birth, marriage, and death. Obviously, these dates are flexible. | Unknown, Mary (I14537)
