405 | According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect (source Kenneth Linwood Shaw, III), Dinah Smith married three times, to: a Mr. Solomon, by whom she had a daughter Sarah b1795; Anthony Shaw IV (as his third wife) by whom she had eleven children born in New York State between the years 1798 and 1815; and Uriah Goodrich whom she married in 1832. According to notes at this site, Dinah's second husband was the same Anthony Shaw who had married her aunt Susannah Remington. This has been confirmed in an email from Sherry Kosciuch. Anthony Shaw's will mentions "his wife's daughter Sarah Solomon"; there is no indication as to whether this is her maiden name or her married name. In the 1850 Federal Census, Dinah Goodridge, age 80 RI, is living at Alfred, Allegany Co., NY. She is with the Wescott family. There are several Shaw families nearby. | Smith, Dinah (I05420)

408 | According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, she was Emma E. Woodin. The 1900 Federal Census says Emma was born in June 1853. The 1930 Federal Census shows widow Emma Remington of about the right age living at Flint, Genesee, MI, with her daughter Eva, 41, and Eva's husband Harley R. Fee (?), and her other daughter Grace Remington, age 39. | Unknown, Emma (I11543)

|
410 | According to a genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, David was married first to Rebecca Phillips, with whom he had six children. Rebecca Colvin is buried in the same cemetery lot, so I am including her here as David's first wife. I obtained the names of David's parents from an online family tree; this information needs to be confirmed. The will of David Colvin of Scituate, advanced in years, is dated 18 Feb 1824, proved 13 Sep 1832. It mentions wife Lucy; sons David Jr., Christopher R., Obediah, Jabez R.; dtr. Nancy Phillips Colvin; and other unnamed children who already have their estate. | Colvin, David (I11021)
|
411 | According to a genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, this Ebenezer married a Remington girl and had four children: William, Patience, Ebenezer, & Mary; the son William married Mollie Fairbanks and Rachel Remington. (This needs verification.) However, I do know that the William who married Rachel was s/o Ebenezer, so at least this part sounds correct. | Allen, Ebenezer (I17356)
|
412 | According to a genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, this is John Julius Remington, b.30 Nov 1822 at Wallingford, VT. This differs slightly from his age of 25 in the 1850 census, which suggests he was born c1825. However, he is listed a second time in the 1850 census, and that time his age is 28. In the 1850 Federal Census, John J. B. Remington and his wife Laura are living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, with their son Passo, 7 months old. Also in the household is John's sister, Sylvia, age 18. They are living nearby other family members, such as Rufus, Amos, and their parents Rufus, Sr., & Rebecca. In 1850, John & Laura Remington are listed a second time in Wallingford: John age 28, Laura age 28, and John 6 months. On this census page they are living near two Edgerton families, probably relatives of Laura. Nearby are Rufus & Rebecca, and Amos and family. In 1860 they are still at Wallingford. John J. & Laura E. Remington are ages 36 & 38, and have two sons: Julius K, 10, and Oscar E., 4. They are next to Rufus & Rebecca Remington, ages 65 & 63. John & Laura are at Wallingford in 1870 with their two sons. In 1880 John B. & Laura Remington are both age 58, still living at Wallingford, VT. In the household is John's mother, Rebecca, age 84, and a daughter-in-law, Ellen Remington, 20 (Oscar's widow). In 1900 Julius J. Remington is age 74 and still living at Wallingford, VT. He is a widower, and a stone mason. | Remington, John Julius B. (I13392)

413 | According to a genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, this William Allen married Freelove Tillinghast. He is of the right age and location to have married her, but I have not yet found any documentation. Wayne G. Tillinghast in his book "The Tillinghasts in America" disputes that, offering evidence that William's wife could not have been Freelove Tillinghast -- at least not the daughter of Joseph Tillinghast. I suspect that Freelove Allen who married William Remington is a daughter of William & Freelove Allen. For the time being, I have placed Freelove Allen as a daughter in this family group, pending further research to confirm. These are assumptions only, based on incomplete evidence. According to research of Wayne G. Tillinghast, William & Freelove Allen were admitted to membership in the Second Baptist Church of Newport on 4 March 1729 ("The Tillinghasts in America, The First Four Generations," RIGS 2006 p 150). | Allen, William III (I17355)

419 | According to a statement written by his great-grandson Benjamin LeValley, Peter was a Frenchman who landed at Marblehead, MA, in the early 1700s. "He remained at Marblehead for some time and acquired considerable property but afterwards traded some of it off for real estate in Warwick, RI, near what is now called River Point or Phoenixville." According to Benjamin, Peter had two sons, John & Michael, and also some daughters, names unknown. I have seen genealogies that assign a son Peter to him, also, as included on this family tree. | LeValley, Peter (I06179)

424 | According to Alden G. Beaman's "RI Vital Record, New Series" Vol 7, p. 236, Dr. Cyrus G. Place was the husband of Rosannah Matteson (1 Aug 1840 - 6 Apr 1863), who died at age 22. She was a daughter of Oliver & Mercy (Manchester) Matteson. However, these dates would make her mother Mercy about 60 when she was born. A check of the RI Cemetery Database shows Rosannah's date of death as 6 April 1836, which makes her year of birth c. 1814. This is most likely the correct year of birth. She is buried in the Oliver Matteson Lot, Historical Cemetery #20 on Weaver Hill Rd. in West Greenwich. In the same lot is the grave of a "Place infant," born and died in 1835. | Matteson, Rosannah (I04498)

433 | According to Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart, Zadock was a Lieutenant in the Revolution. One of the earliest settlers of Castleton, VT, he ran a tavern there after 1771; it was a famous meeting place of the Green Mountain patriots. Zadock Remington is listed in the 1790 Federal Census at Castleton, Rutland Co., VT. After the formation of the town of Castleton in March 1777, Zadock Remington was the first representative. In the town history he is also mentioned as a lister and a grand juror. Zadock's dwelling, the first frame house built in Castleton, VT, was located about a half mile west of the village. For many years it was the largest one in town. His brother David was arrested and banished for aiding the British during their campaign in VT. In the Federal Census of 1790, Zadock Remington is listed for Castleton, Rutland, VT; also in 1810. Zadock died at about age 93. See this Vermont website for more information: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/RutlandCastelton.html | Remington, Zadock Sr. (I08180)

437 | According to Caleb's gravestone, he died in his 66th year on 4 Oct 1849. However, he is age 66 in the June 1850 Federal Census. In the 1850 Census, the Remmington household is as follows: Caleb 66 RI Machinist, Joannah L. 50 RI, John 27 RI Machine Printery (?), Andrew 25 RI (same occupation), Caleb 24 RI Laborer, Benjamin 22 RI Laborer, Christopher 17 RI Laborer, Joannah 14 RI, Joseph R. Mathewson 14 RI (probably Caleb's grand-nephew), Abraham Bennette 33 RI Farmer, and Zilpha Bennette 22 RI. I am wondering if his marriage to Joanna was a second marriage for Caleb. I have found a William Remington born c 1808 in Foster, RI, to Caleb & Vesta Remington. He is living in Sturbridge, MA, with his family in 1850 - 1880, and died there in 1880. The death record names his parents. Since Caleb's brother William died in 1807, he may have named a son after him. Perhaps Vesta died and Caleb remarried (?). Although I am not positive that this refers to this Caleb, the 1810 census lists the household of Caleb Remington 2nd living in Gloucester, Providence Co., RI, as follows: 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-44 (Caleb), 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 26-44. If this is indeed a first marriage, possibly to Vesta, they may have had at least 2 daughters and two sons born between 1800 and 1810. The two older girls could be other relatives (?). The 1810 census at Glocester also lists Caleb, here as Caleb Remington Jr., with household as follows: 1 free white male 16-18, 1 free white male 16-26 including family heads, 1 free white male 26-45, and 1 free white male 45+; and 1 free white female 16-26. This seems to show that Caleb has a young wife, as his wife in 1810 was age 26-44. Assuming this is the same Caleb as in 1810, where are the daughters? Is there one son, or two, still in the household? Adeline was born in Oct 1820, presumably after this census was taken, dated Aug. In 1830 Caleb Remington Jr. is listed at Johnston: 2 males under 5 (Benjamin & Caleb), 2 males 5-10 (John & Andrew), 1 male 30-40 (possible a nephew, Caleb B. or William W.), 1 male 40-50 (Caleb), 1 male 80-90 (father Caleb Sr.), 1 female 5-10 (Adeline), and 1 female 30-40 (wife Joanna). They are listed next to widowed sister Sarah Remington as head of her household; see notes for her. | Remington, Caleb Jr. (I06188)

438 | According to Carla Philips, David Brayton Manchester belongs in this family, but he is not with them in the 1850 census -- unless, of course, the census taker missed a name. In fact, I can't find him in any census before 1880. However, there is a David B. Manchester b c 1849/50, s/o John (b c1824, prob. s/o Charlotte) & Mary, in the 1860 & 1870 censuses at Tiverton. According to Carla, this David married Eva Willis on 16 Dec 1874 at N Kingstown, Washington Co., RI. the 1880 Federal Census shows David B. Manchester, age 30, a fisherman, living at North Kingstown, RI. His wife, Mary E., is 25, and they have a daughter Edith B., age 2. This David may belong to Philip & Esther, or he may belong to John & Mary. (This needs more research.) | Manchester, David Brayton (I18945)

In 1880, they are next door to married daughter Harriet and her family. George H. is living with his sister's family. In the 1900 Federal Census, Joseph & Harriet are living at Attleborough, Bristol Co., MA. According to the census data, Harriet came to America in 1836. | Martin, Joseph P. (I12001)
