| In the Federal Census of 1830, listings for Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, show Jonathan Rimmington and Jonathan Rimmington Jr. Jonathan Jr. has three children in the household: 1 female 5<10, 1 female <5, and 1 male <5. In the Federal Census of 1840, a Jonathan Remington appears at Wallingford, VT. However, according to Mary Lou Raftery, this Jonathan is at Diana, Lewis Co., NY (not accessible at ancestry.com). Information on the 1865 census at Diana, NY, is from Mary Lou Raftery: Jonathan Remington 61 VT, Nathan Remington son-in-law 37 Jeff. NY, Rhoda Remington 34 child VT, Emily J. Walod 19 adopted Jeff. NY, Jonathan A. Bowhall 4 adopted Lewis Co., NY. In the 1870 census, Johnathan Remington 66 VT is living at Champion, Jefferson Co., NY. He is with married daughter Phebe C. and her husband Abner Smith and famiy. In the Federal Census of 1880, Jonathan Remington is age 78 VT, living with the family of George Collar in Diana, Lewis Co., NY. Jonathan is identified as grandfather. His brother John, age 90 in the census, is also living at Diana, NY. Who was his wife? Where is he in the censuses of 1850 and 1860? The intersection of NY Rts. 3 & 812 in Diana, Lewis Co., NY, is called "Remington Corners." Credit note: The list of Jonathan's children and descendants (except for Phebe Celestia and her family, and the above-mentioned George Collar and his family) came to me from Mary Lou Raftery. | Remington, Jonathan (I16747)

| In the Federal Census of 1830, Sally Ann Wood is living in Warwick, RI, near William Wood and Thomas Remington. | Gorton, Sally Ann (I25364)
| In the Federal Census of 1830, Thomas Remington is listed as living in Warwick, RI. In that census, there are three individuals named Thomas Remington in Warwick. However, I have made an assumption that his one is the individual listed with other families of the surnames Hill, Wood, and Browning, who I also am assuming are his relatives. Some of the individuals listed on the same census page with Thomas are: Christopher Hill, William Wood, another William Wood, Sally Ann Wood, John Browning, Stephen Browning, and Benjamin Hill. For this reason, I have made an additional assumption that this particular Thomas Remington is a son of Thomas Remington and Mary Wood (daughter of William Wood). The household data in the 1830 census agrees with the known family information for Thomas, as it indicates one free white male age 30 - 40, one free white female age 30 - 40, one free white female under age 5, and one free white female age 5 - 10. Please note that the above assumptions assumptions are supported by census and cemetery evidence, as well as family relationships confirmed by marriages. However, no birth record exists for Thomas, to prove the identity of his parents. Thomas had a son named Charles, who may have been named after his (assumed) brother Charles. I believe that Thomas is not mentioned in his father's Revolutionary War pension records because he was deceased when the final payment was made to his mother, Mary Remington, who died in 1837. | Remington, Thomas (I25356)
| In the Federal Census of 1830, Zechariah R. Knapp is listed at Johnston, RI. In the household are 5 individuals: 2 males < 5, one male 5 < 10, one male 40 < 50, one female 5 < 10, and one female 30 < 40. I can't find him in either the 1840 or 1850 censuses, and Elizabeth appears to be a widow in 1850. | Knapp, Zachariah R. (I18605)
| In the Federal Census of 1840, James Kent is listed at Ashford, CT. James and his assumed wife are ages 40 - 49, along with another female in the household age 20 - 29, possibly a daughter or servant (see note for Betsey Kent below). Listed next to him is William Kent 20 - 29 and his wife. In the 1850 Federal Census, James & Ruby Kent are at Ashford, CT, ages 59 & 56. That means James would have been born c 1791. His birthplace is given as CT. His occupation is blacksmith. James Kent is still at Ashford, CT in 1860, but this time his birthplace is given as RI. He is a farmer, and it appears that he may have remarried, as Mary Kent is with him now. Marriages in Ashford and surrounding towns that could be children of James & Ruby: KENT: Betsey, of Ashford, m. Bradley Barrows, of Mansfield, Nov. 12, 1840, by Rev. Ezekiel Skinner; 5; 75 (Ashford) Hannah C., of Ashford, m. Lorenzo Hardings, of Medford, Mass., Dec. 1, 1838, by Rev. Ezekiel Skinner; 5; 69 (Ashford) Cyrel W., late of Ashford, now of Pomfret, m. Hunt, of Abington; 3; 62 (Pomfret) | Kent, James (I25453)

In the 1850 Federal Census, Rufus & Pruda are living at Wallingford, Rutland, VT, with their four children. They are near Rufus Sr., Amos, & John J. B. Remington and their families. | Remington, Rufus Jr. (I13382)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, a Jeremiah Manchester age 47 RI (c1803) is a cook, living in Glocester, RI. He is listed as living with Elijah W. Presho or Presto (?). There has been some speculation that this Jeremiah could be my ancestor, the one who married Mary H. Dennis who later married Roderick Rounds. However, the names of Jeremiah's and Mary's children do not reflect this family. If he is the same Jeremiah, there must have been a divorce, and there would be a record of it at the Judicial Archives. Also, if this Jeremiah died in RI, there should be a death record for him at the RI State Archives. | Manchester, Jeremiah (I18527)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, Abigail is age 32, living with her mother and several siblings at Barton, Orleans Co., VT. In 1870 she may be a domestic servant at Barton. In the Federal Census of 1860, the family is living at Willington, Tolland Co., CT. They have another child, Susan E. 9. In 1870, they are still at Willington, but Alfred is listed as Henry Knight. In 1880 they are still at Willington; daughter Susan E. age 29 is with them. Married son George and family are nearby. According to Encyclopedia of American Biography, New Series, Vol 4 p 124, Alfred was a farmer and lived in Coventry, RI, until between April and November of 1859 when he moved to Willington, CT. | Knight, Alfred Waterman (I05089)

| In the Federal Census of 1850, Benjamin Green is age 22, living at Coventry, RI, with his mother Abigail Green 27, and Bradford R. Green 14. He may be the Benjamin Greene aged 30 in the 1860 Federal Census, living at Coventry, married to Mary E. Greene 24 and with an infant daughter Lucy 1. Is he Benjamin W. Greene 51 in 1880, living with Mary E. 50 in Providence, with two daughters? This needs more research. | Greene, Benjamin (I24306)

They have the following children in the household: Mary A. 16, William P. 13, Sarah J. 10, Pamelia 6, & John 2. In the Federal Census of 1860, Charles & Margaret, ages 50 & 39, are still at Accomack. Children with them are: William 23, Permelia 15, John 12, George 9, & Margaret 4. In 1870 Charles is age 60, apparently a widower, living at Metompkin, Accomack Co., VA. With him are George 17 and Peggie 15. He is still there in 1880, age 68, living with son John N. & Elizabeth Berry, ages 28 & 25. John is Charles's son. | Berry, Charles P. (I22498)

| In the Federal Census of 1850, Christopher R. Colvin is age 40 and Nabby Colvin is age 63. I don't know if these ages are accurate. From the RI Cemetery Database: COLVIN CHRISTOPHER R 1827c - 25 SEP 1853 SC121. This data is confusing. Perhaps the stone is not easily readable. The will of Christopher R. Colvin of Cranston is dated 14 Aug 1852, proved 29 Oct 1853. It mentions wife Nabby "who received what she had before our marriage"; sister Lydia Carpenter w/o Peleg; Henry Hierlihy executor. Boyd Scott Remington has Christopher R. Colvin as marrying Alta Mary Remington. It could be that Nabby was his second wife, as implied by the wording in his will. | Colvin, Christopher Ralph (I08964)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, David & Susan, ages 26 & 24, are living at Palmer, Hampden Co., MA. They are with or next to her parents, Bradford and Waity Ellsbury, and family. David is a blacksmith. | Squire, Daniel E. (I25418)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, David is age 38 and living at Barton, Orleans Co., VT. Also in the household are: Claude 62 RI, Mary 35 VT, Nancy 40 VT, and Abigail 32 VT. "Claude" is probably their mother Clarissa. In the Federal Census of 1880, David Knapp is age 65, boarding at Morgan, Orleans Co., VT, with his widowed sister Mary Pratt and her son William. | Knapp, David (I13621)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, David S. & Lucretia C. Holloway, ages 49 & 52, are living at Newport, RI. In the household are David W. 25 & William E. 21, presumably their sons; also, Sarah S. Remington, 34, probably Lucretia's niece; and Maria Mitchell 20. In the Federal Census of 1860, the family is still in Newport: David S. 59, Lucretia 60, William E. 30; and Sarah Remington 40. | Holloway, David S. (I13557)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, Edmund C. Remington, age 25, is living at Reading, Hillsdale Co., MI. The census says he is a carpenter born in MA, but if this is indeed Charles Edmund, that information is probably incorrect. In the Federal Census of 1900, Edmund and Ruth A. Remington, ages 75 & 61, are living at Bloomingdale Village, Van Buren Co., MI. With them is daughter Clare E. 35. They are next to Edwin and family. | Remington, Charles Edmund (I23695)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, Eliza Lake is age 35, living in Tiverton, RI. With her are the following, all Lake: William 18, Marybe 10, Thomas 9, Jared 5, Nabby 65, Abby 30, and Sally 43. It appears that Eliza may be a widow, but this needs more research to confirm. Many other Lake individuals are listed on the same census page, including a couple named Job & Eliza, but they are a bit older. | Pettey, Elizabeth "Eliza" (I26398)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, George and Margaret Munro, both aged 35, are living at Bristol, RI, with Sylvester & Phebe Munro, possibly George's parents. George is a Packet Master. They are next to Bennett Munro and family. | Munroe, George H. (I00491)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, he appears to be the Henry Remington age 27 VT, a farmer, living at Danby, Rutland Co., VT; he is living with the Southworth family; they are listed near the household of Henry's father Joshua and other family members. In the Federal Census of 1860, Henry & Fidelia F. Remington, ages 35 & 22, are living at Schroon, Essex Co., NY. They have two children. The family is next to Justus B. Remington and his family, and near Ziba Remington and family. | Remington, Henry (I01522)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, he appears to be the Thomas Whitman, age 46, living in West Greenwich, RI. His wife is in Warwick. Their eldest son Henry is living with Layton & Betsey Hopkins in West Greenwich, next to or with Thomas. The surname is sometimes spelled Wightman, but is always pronounced Whitman. | Whitman, Thomas Jefferson (I21103)
| In the Federal Census of 1850, he may be the Reuben Remington age 25 VT (b c1825) living at Danby, Rutland Co., VT. He appears to be single and a farmer. In the Federal Census of 1860, He is probably the "Rueben" Remington age 33 VT (b c1827) living at Little York, Nevada, CA. He is working as a miner. In 1870 he is likely Rubin Remington listed at Shelby, Blue Earth Co., MN. Little identifying information is given, other than acreage and agricultural information. In 1880 he is likely R. B. Remington age 53 VT (b c1827, both parents b VT) living at Pass Creek, Douglas Co., OR. Besides R. B. or Reuben, in the household are: P. A. 35 NY (both parents b VT), Minnie 14 MN, Ora P. 12 MN, Ida May 9 MN, & Rosalpha 5 NY. Reuben as a son of Reuben & Elizabeth is included here based on a family tree by "Cyndee" at Rootsweb's Worldconnect. Some information on Reuben's descendants comes from Cyndee's family tree, also. Other information came from other trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect. (Needs more research to confirm all.) | Remington, Reuben (I23944)

| In the Federal Census of 1850, Henry & Clarissa are living at New Haven, Oswego Co., NY. With them are two daughters: Cornelia C. 25, and Amelia A. 23. They are next to Paul Green and family; he is probably Henry's brother. | Greene, Henry (I22085)

| In the Federal Census of 1850, James G. & Sally Wellwood, ages 37 & 34, are living at Mexico, Oswego Co., NY. They have two children: Thompson R. 10 and John 6. Also with them is Joanna Remington, 40. Is she Sally's sister? J. A. & Sally Wellwood, ages 48 & 45, are living at Wellwood, Mexico, Oswego Co., NY, in the 1860 Federal Census. They have two children: John 16 & Emma 8. Esther Wellwood, age 72 RI, is living with them. She is probably James's mother. In the 1880 Federal Census, James Wellwood, 70, is living with Edwin & Lucretia Griffin at Mexico, NY. (source: Biography of John Wellwood) Here is some family history from the Oswego, NY, genweb site, which ties them to the Tanner, Sheldon, and Remington families of Rhode Island -- although the narrative doesn't easily line up with the will abstracts I have read: "Tanner purchased land in Westerly [RI] in 1693. He married 3 times. The last woman was Elizabeth Colgrave (?). They had 6 children. The oldest was Francis Tanner, who had 2 sons. The younger son was Joshua, born 27, 1757, in South Kingston, RI. He married Elizabeth Sheldon. They had 10 children. The sixth child was Esther Tanner who married John Wellwood. "John and Esther did not arrive in Mexico until 1838. Their presence was noted by every major writer of Oswego County history. A section in South Mexico was called Wellwood. There were many family members. There was and is a Wellwood Cemetery. The Wellwood family participated in local life, both town and church, for close to 100 years but next to nothing certain remains about them. If it were not for the Wellwood area and the cemetery they would likely be forgotten. "A major factor in losing this family was the lack of participation in the various census enumerations. Census takers skipped over this part of town in the early days. Not one Wellwood was counted in the 1840 0r 1850 Oswego County census. [My comment -- James Welwood and his family are in the 1850 Federal Census at Mexico, Oswego Co.] Later records seem incomplete with some persons hard to find because the recorder spelled their name as Welwood [sic]. Thus the family record now remains fragmentary . . . "[In 1860] this family lived next door to the Remingtons, also a well-known group in the Wellwood area. The maiden name of Sally, J.A. | Wellwood, James A. (I08990)

| In the Federal Census of 1850, Josephine age 7 and her brother Jephtha age 11 are living in Tiverton, RI, with Edward & Patience Simmons. Edward and Patience may be their paternal grandparents; however, this needs more research to confirm. I think Patience's maiden name is Macomber. In the census they are living next to Benjamin Macomber and family. Both Jephtha 11 and Josephine 7 (also listed as Joseph 8) are listed with their mother and other siblings in Portsmouth, as well as being listed at Tiverton. Josephine's mother, Elizabeth, remarried to William H. Chitty in 1847. In the 1850 census Elizabeth and her second husband are living at Portsmouth, RI (indexed under Chitta); by 1860 they have moved to Block Island (indexed as Chittey). | Simmons, Josephine (I21121)

With him are his wife Mary 30 NY, and the following children: Philinda 11 WC, Charles 6 WC, & Angeline 1 WC. Religion is Methodist. In the 1871 Census of Canada, the Remington family is still at Harwich: Lusius 49 United States, Mary E. 33 United States, Charles 14 United States, John 6 Ontario, & Gertrude 4 Ontario. Religion is Episcopal Methodist. In the 1881 Census of Canada, the family is still at Harwich: Lucius 59 Vermont, Mary 52 New York, Charles 26 New York, John 16 Ontario, & Malissa 14 Ontario. Their religion is still given as Methodist. In the 1901 Census of Canada, Lucious & Mary E. Remington, ages 82 & 73, are at Ridgetown, Elgin, Ontario. This gives his dob as 27 Jan 1819; Mary's dob 15 May 1827. | Remington, Lucius (I23923)

| In the Federal Census of 1850, Oliver and wife Catharine, ages 26 & 24, are living at Wheatland, Monroe Co., NY, with his mother Jerusha. They have an infant daughter, Frances C. age 1. In the Federal Census of 1860 they are still at Wheatland. There are several more individuals in the household, including a total of 5 children, and also J. H. Allen age 60 VT, Oliver's mother. In the 1892 NY State Census they are still at Wheatland. Oliver is 68 and Catherine is 64. In 1900 they are at Mumford, NY. There is a discrepancy in the birthdates for Oliver. Another source has it as 19 April 1827. The 1823 date seems to agree more with his age as given in the censuses. From Landmarks of Monroe County, NY by William F. Peck (1895) Part III, p. 80 - 81 "Allen, Oliver, proprietor of the well known O-At-Ka woolen mill, was born in September, 1823, at Mumford, Monroe county, N. Y., where he still resides. His father was Oliver Allen 1st, born in Pittsfield, Mass., in 1798, and married to Jerusha Hopkins Remington, in 1822. Their two children are the present Oliver, sr., and Elizabeth M., wife of John R. Olmsted of Le Roy, N. Y. The father of Oliver Allen 1st was Rufus Allen of Pittsfield, and his mother was Emilicent Seymour of Canandaigua, N. Y. Miss Remington was the daughter of Dr. Silas Remington of Rupert, Vt., and Betsey Rose Gere Remington of Chesterfield, Conn. The first Oliver early learned the trade of wool-carding and cloth-dressing, and came to Mumford in 1821, establishing and continuing that business for eight years. In 1829 they purchased and located themselves upon the present site of the O-At-Ka Mill, under the firm name of Remington and Allen. This partnership existed until 1841, when Allen bought the Remington interest and enlarged the previous capacity of the mill, putting in power looms and additional machinery for manufacturing various qualities of woolen goods. About the same time there was added to this property the neighboring custom and flouring mill, previously owned by Donald McKenzie. In 1844, having taken his son into partnership, the firm became Oliver Allen &, which remained unchanged until the death of the senior partner in 1848. In 1872 Oliver 3d came into the business, making the firm name for the second time Oliver Allen and Son. Mr. Allen has been identified with church, school and other interests, and was made presiding officer of the centennial celebration of the town of Wheatland, which occurred September 3,1889. He was the chief promoter of the Rochester and State Line Railway and after years of incessant labor the road became an actual fact, Mr. Allen driving the last spike at its completion to Salamanca. He was made vice-president when the company was first organized, and afterward president, which office he held until years after the road was finished. He was one of the incorporators of the Merchant's Savings Bank of Rochester, and is at present the oldest trustee of that institution; and also for many years a director in the Flour City National Bank of the same city. Mr. Allen was married in 1848 to Miss Catharine H. Seaman, daughter of Leonard Lewis and Mahala Doughty Seaman of Palmyra, N. Y. Their children are Frances S.; Oliver jr., of the home firm; Leonard L., of Allen Bro's flannel and hosiery mill, Rochester; Katharine E.; Lillian, deceased; Ethan, of the New York branch office of Allen Bros.; Harry, in charge of Chicago office; Charles Ernest, deceased." 4391 | In the Federal Census of 1850, Orra Potter is age 56, living in Cranston, RI. With her is Cynthia Mathewson 39, Juliet and Matilda Potter both age 30, and Louisa T. Remington 1. Cynthia is Orra's widowed daughter and Louisa is Orra's granddaughter, child of Louisa Potter Remington who died in 1849. I have made an assumption that Juliet and Matilda are also Orra's daughters (needs more research to confirm). In 1860 Orra age 65 is still in Cranston. 4394 | In the Federal Census of 1850, Ransom & Matilda Remington, ages 52 VT & 49 MA, are living at Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They have seven children in the household: Silas 18, Laura 15, Adaline 13, Emerson 11, Emery 8, Olive 8, & Alzada 5. In the Federal Census of 1860, Ransom & Matilda Remington, ages 63 & 60, are still living at Dayton. Four children are in the household: Emmerson 21, Emma J. 18, Alzada 15, and Eri 12. (Eri is named in Ransom's will, but I believe he is a grandson, based on the obituary for Arvilla, wife of Charles -- unless there were two individuals named Eri born around the same year) In the Federal Census of 1870, Ransom & Matilda Remington, ages 73 VT & 65 MA, are still living at Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They are next to Silas & Arvilla Remington and family. In the Federal Census of 1880, Ransom Remington is age 86 VT (VT/VT), still living at Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. He is living with son-in-law David Comstock and family. Ransom's will, made in 1881, says he was 86 years old at that time. If true, he was born c 1795. (source: D. Rockwell, a descendant) Nancy Olejniczak sent me a copy of a "Petition for Proof of Will, to the Surrogate of the County of Cattaraugus." This document refers to Ransom's will dated 3 Oct 1881. This will appointed as Executors Francis E. Haines and Emery Jane Comstock. The document lists all the heirs and next of kin of Ransom, along with their places of residence. Listed are: Lewis Remington, Hiram Remington, Arminal (?) Bunstow, Emerson Remington, Adaline Rockwell, Olive Robinson, Emory Jane Comstock, Silas Remington, Alzada Comstock, Eri Remington, Silas Remington, and Laura S. Chattuck. Also listed are numerous grandchildren. [My note -- these last three are grandchildren -- children of son Charles who died bef. 1855) From findagrave.com (needs more research to be confirmed): "There is no stone for Ransom. Cemetery records show that he owned a plot of eight graves but do not indicate who was buried there. The only stones in the area are for his wife Matilda and son Emerson. Lacking other proof, it is assumed that Ransom was buried here next to his wife. Ransom came to Dayton in the early 1830s from Marcellus, Onondaga Co., NY. His brother Orange arrived at about the same time and they might have traveled together." | Remington, Ransom (I22702)

In 1860 the Flagler family is still at Lockport, but Abigail appears to be a widow. Also living in the same town in 1850 is Abby's brother Sherman Remington and his family. Source note: It was brought to my attention by Ann Bowler (with info from Judith Rae Remington) that Abby and her husband Sylvester were living in Lockport in 1850. | Flagler, Sylvester (I08979)
