4401 | In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is at Jamestown, RI, as follows: Oliver Hopkins 84 RI, Jane 62 RI, Oliver W. 23 RI, Mary 19 RI (mn Caswell, w/o Oliver), Susan M. 30 RI -- possibly sis of Oliver; and Albert Caswell 12 RI -- possibly brother of Mary. There is quite an age difference between Oliver and his wife Jane; I wonder if it was a second marriage? I have made an assumption that the marriage of Oliver Hopkins of Jamestown to Mary Brown is a first marriage for this Oliver who married Jane Battey. The will of Oliver Hopkins, "yeoman of Jamestown, advanced in age" is dated 23 Feb 1836, proved 20 Mar 1851. It mentions wife Jane; sons George L. of Oteger, NY; William H.; and Oliver W. under 21; dtrs Ruth Watson of Louiano, NY; and Susan. | Hopkins, Oliver (I26880)

In the CA state census of 1852 Freeman is in Sacramento, CA. In 1860 he appears to be Freeman Shearman 35 MA, working as a miner in Brandy City, Sierra, CA. His wife Harriet and son Freeman are living in Merritt, Yolo, CA. In 1870 the family appears to be living in Lincoln, Sierra, CA: F. Sherman 47 MA Miner above G (?), H. N. Sherman 42 MA, W. W. Thomas is a blacksmith. In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is living in North Providence, RI. Thomas is still a blacksmith. It appears that Rebecca and all the children were born in PEI except Sarah whose birthplace is given as Rhode Island. I do not find them in 1860 so perhaps they returned to PEI and then later came back to RI. He is probably the Thomas Giddings age 72 who died in Providence 3 July 1879; parents identified as Joseph and Sarah Giddings. | Giddings, Thomas (I26902)

In 1870, they are still in New Bedford: John Rounds 55 RI Farm Laborer, Emeline 47 CT Keeping House, George W. Hazard 57 RI Laborer, Blind. 4415 | In the Federal Census of 1850, the Wightman family is living at Bolivar, Allegany Co., NY: Allen 45 NY (lumberman), Amanda V. 33 RI, Aurelia 16 NY, Samuel 12 NY, Josephine 10 NY, Allen 7 NY, & Caroline A. 4 NY; also Isaac D. Smith 33 NY. In the Federal Census of 1860, Allen Wightman 54 NY is listed at Half Moon (Villiage of Eau Claire City), Eau Claire Co., WI. He is working as a blacksmith, apparently staying at a hotel. Two of his married daughters later moved to Eau Claire Co., WI. In the Federal Census of 1870, Allen 69 and his son Allen Jr. 27 are living at Alma, Allegany Co., NY. No other family members are listed with them. Allen Sr. works in a shingle mill, and Allen Jr. is a farmer. The online cemetery information says Allen was born in Onondaga Co., NY, and died in Allegany Co., NY. The 1820 Federal Census lists Arannah Wightman in Onondaga Co., NY. I believe this must be Allen's father, based on his birth location; this agrees with two online family trees (but needs more research to confirm). His name (Arannah or Aurunah) may be written as Aaron in two censuses; the 1830 census shows Aaron Wightman age 60 - 70 at Bolivar, Allegany Co., NY; the 1840 census shows A. Wightman age 70 - 80 at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. In Wellsville, Allegany Co,, NY, there is a Wightman Road, off Rt. 417. No doubt it is named for Allen's family or extended family. | Wightman, Allen (I23430)
4416 | In the Federal census of 1850, Thomas & Mary Bentley, both aged 26, are living at Horicon, Warren Co., NY. They appear to be living with the family of Lindsay & Cordelia Ross (both born VT), possibly relatives, since Mary's grandmother is Martha Ross. In 1860 Thomas & Mary are still living at Horicon, NY. They have three children. In 1880 the family is still at Horicon, NY. Thomas & Mary have 4 children in the household. In addition, with them are Anna Bentley 40 NY and Albert 1 Canada. In 1880 the family is still at Horicon, NY. Three of their children are with them -- William, Cora, & Anna -- and a daughter-in-law, Laura or Lura. They are listed next to Mary's married niece Carrie Davis and her family, and Hercy Remington. In 1900 Thomas & Mary, ages 76 & 75, are still at Horicon, living with married son William and family. | Bentley, Thomas (I15022)
4417 | In the Federal Census of 1850, Thomas & Mercy Remington, ages 37 & 38, both b RI, are living at Southbridge, MA. They have two daughters: Caroline (middle initial I, T, or P?) 15, and Sarah A. 9. Apparently Caroline was a twin to Cornelia, but Cornelia died young. Carrie died in 1855. In 1850, Thomas's brother Henry and family also are living at Southbridge. In the Federal Census of 1860, Thomas J. Remington is a day laborer living with the family of Henry Fiske at Sturbridge, Worcester Co., MA. It is not clear whether his wife and children have all died, but they are not with him. Perhaps his death record would show whether he was a widower or not. However, I am not sure where he died. | Remington, Thomas J. (I02964)
4418 | In the Federal Census of 1850, Thomas A. & Zilpha Paine, ages 53 & 51 RI, are living at Smithfield, Providence Co., RI With them are the following: Ellen M. Paine 21 RI, Martha A. Paine 15 PA, Harriet L. or S. Paine 10 RI, William S. Wilkinson 27 RI, Laura C. Wilkinson 24 RI, & Anna M. Wilkinson 1 MA. In the 1860 Federal Census, they are still at Smithfield. The household consists of: Thomas A. Paine 64 RI, Zilpha Paine 62 RI, Maria E. Barnes 32 RI, Martha A. Paine 24 RI, Harriet S. Paine 20 RI, Elizabeth L. Barnes 8 RI, & George L. Barnes 7 RI. In the Federal Census of 1870, they are still at Smithfield: Thomas A. Paine 74 RI, Zilpha R. Paine 72, Ellen Barnes 43 RI, George L. Barnes 18 RI, & Martha A. Paine 35 PA. Some information on Thomas & Zilpha came from a descendant, Diana Koch. Additional information from Diana: "Thomas A. Paine's father is Arnold Paine, Jr. who married Anne Aldrich, his grandfather is Arnold Paine who married Judith Staples and his great-grandfather was Benjamin Paine who married Ann Arnold who was one of his 4 wives! Benjamin Paine had about 23 children in all!" | Paine, Thomas A. (I22901)
4419 | In the Federal Census of 1850, William & Mary are living in East Boston (Boston Ward 4), Suffolk Co., MA. They have a son, Salman T., five months old. After his wife Mary died, Willam later remarried, probably before 1859, to another Mary. They had a daughter Emma born c1859. | Waite, William Alfred (I22232)
4420 | In the Federal Census of 1850, William P. Berry age 50 is living at Accomack, Accomack Co., VA. He may have been older than his age as given in the census. | Berry, William P. (I22484)
4421 | In the Federal Census of 1850, Wm & Melissa are at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. They have a daughter Francelia, 5 mos. Also with them is William's brother Simon, 23. In the Federal Census of 1860, Wm & Malissa Whitman, ages 35 & 32, are at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. They have four children in the household: F. R. 10, Phebe 7, Wm M. 2, & Emma O. 1. (William M. & Emma both died young.) In the Federal Census of 1870, William & Melissa, ages 46 & 42, are still living at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY. They have four children in the household: Celia 20, Phebe M. 17, Mary E. 7, & Sidney E. 4. According to the book "Allegany County and its people: a centennial memorial history of Allegany County, New York" (Alfred, N.Y.: W.A. Fergusson & Co., 1896), William, son of Simon & Catherine, lived at Turtle Point, PA, when the book was written. Consequently, I have made an assumption that this William in the 1900 Federal Census is the same individual; he and his wife Melissa are living at Annin Township, McKean Co., PA. Turtle Point is also in McKean Co. Census data says they have been married 53 years, and have had 7 children, of whom 4 are still living. The may have had another daughter Elizabeth R., born and died in 1861 (source: online cemetery data). | Wightman, William (I23467)
4422 | In the Federal Census of 1860, Bliss and Maria are living at are living at Amherst, Lorain Co., OH, next to his parents. They have a daughter Mary B. age 2. In the Federal Census of 1870, B. B. Remington and his wife Maria are living at Lenox, Astabula Co., OH. They have two children: Mary 12 and Henrietta 3. | Remington, Bliss Benedict (I11816)
4423 | In the Federal Census of 1860, Eri Rimmington is age 12, living in the household of Ransom and Matilda Remington. In the Federal Census of 1880, Eri Remington is age 30, living with the family of Zack Newcomb at Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., NY. Eri works on the farm. In the Federal Census of 1910, Eri is age 61, working as a hired man/farm laborer at Dayton, Cattaraugus Co., NY. He is mentioned in the will of Ransom Remington, presumably father. His gravestone has his name spelled Erie Remington. Eri was a midget. | Remington, Eri (I11284)

4425 | In the Federal Census of 1860, Harriet Sherman 32 MA and and son Freeman age 12 MA are living in Yolo, CA. Harriet's husband is a miner in Brandy City, CA. See note for husband Freeman. | Hazard, Harriet N. (I28807)
4426 | In the Federal Census of 1860, Henry J. & "Sharlott" Bell are living at Hampshire, Kane Co., IL, with their seven children. Prudence is 18. I have made an assumption that this is the family of Prudence Bell who married Dennis H. Remington. The age and state of birth agree. | Bell, Henry Gale (I22620)
4427 | In the Federal Census of 1860, her name is listed as Amelia. In the 1880 Federal Census, "Alinear" or "Almear" Remington is age 50 and living in Richland, Holmes Co., OH. In the household are: Winfield 26 (sch teacher), Marqis W. 24, Caral 22 (? d-in-law), Hannah R. 21, Sarah M. 19, John W. 9, & Lilia A. 2. All are born in New York except the mother, Almera. However, it is puzzling that the census data says that the father of both Marqis & Lilia was born in Rhode Island. Is that an error? It must be, because Lillie is a daughter of Marcus & Sarah. She was probably the daughter of Hiram and Hannah Sayles, with whom she is living in the 1850 census at Knox, OH. | Sayles, Almera (I06945)
4428 | In the Federal Census of 1860, his name looks like Sweet C. Remington. Other sources say Sennett. The 1855 MA Census has his name as Leverett. In the Federal Census of 1870, L. C. Remington 34 MA is living at Norwich, Chenango Co., MA. He is married to Amelia I. 29 NY. In the household are Theodore B. and Augusta Frost (?), ages 21 & 16, both b NY. In 1880 the family is living at Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY. They have a daughter Clara, 3. In 1900, they are at Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY. With them is widowed daughter Carrie Carr, 23. Leverett is a carpenter. | Remington, Leverett C. (I11657)
4429 | In the Federal Census of 1860, J. M. Remington and his wife Sarah are both age 48 RI/MA, living at Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA. With them is Mary Hendrick 77 MA, presumably Sarah's mother. James is a carpenter. In 1870, James & Sarah Remington, both 58, are still at Northbridge. In the household is Josephine, age 18, born in Ohio. In the 1880 Federal Census, James M. & Sarah Remington, both age 68, are at Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA. With them is niece Ida E. Remington, age 19. James's birth is recorded at Northbridge, but he may have been born in RI. | Remington, James Mussey (I05591)
4430 | In the Federal Census of 1860, James A. & Phebe S. Whitford, ages 24 & 22, are living at West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI. With them are: Avis W. Whitford 2, Sarah Whitford 85, & Abby Matteson 62. In 1870, James & Phebe are still at West Greenwich. They now have two daughters. In 1880 the family is still at West Greenwich: James A. 44, Phebe S. 42, and Ruth B. 18. Ruth is teaching school. They are living near Amos & Sally Sweet, Phebe's father and stepmother. | Whitford, James A. (I14397)
4431 | In the Federal Census of 1860, James Remington is age 20, living at Elbridge, Onondaga Co., NY, with the family of Abraham Pickard -- possibly his uncle. James is a farm laborer. In the Federal Census of 1870, James age 30 NY is married to Lydia age 30 NY. They are living at Elbridge, Onondaga Co., NY. Also listed in the household is Sarah A. Remington 35 NY. I am wondering if the age is a mistake, and if Sarah is their daughter (?) age 5 or so. In the Federal Census of 1880, James 40 NY and Lydia 37 NY are still at Elbridge, NY. With them is daughter Anna Remington 16 NY. Anna was not listed as Anna in the previous census, so she may be adopted, or she may be Sarah A. who was listed in 1870. This needs more research. In the Federal Census of 1900, James 60 & "Liddy" 61 are still at Elbridge, NY. According to census data, they have been married 40 years; Lydia has had three children, one of whom is still living. | Remington, James (I25034)
4432 | In the Federal Census of 1860, Jonathan M. & Camelia E. Remington, ages 25 OH and 22 Can, are living at Bloomingdale, Van Buren Co., MI. They have two children: Chancey F. 5 and Lowel C. 6 months. Jonathan is a farmer. In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is still at Bloomingdale: J. M. 36 OH, Kilk E. 34 Can, Chancey F. 14 MI, Lowell C. 9 MI, & Flora P. 4 MI. Jonathan is a house carpenter. In the Federal Census of 1880, the family is at Bangor, Van Buren Co., MI: J. M. 44? OH, Nellie A. 42 Can, Lowell 20 MI, Flora 13 MI, & Dolph M. 9 MI. In the Federal Census of 1900, they are at Colfax, Wexford Co., MI: Johnathan 64 OH (June 1835), Camilia E. 62 Can (Feb 1838). Jonathan & Camilia are living near sons Chancey and Dolph and their families. In 1910, Johnathan M. Remington, widower age 74, is living at Colfax with son Dolph and family. | Remington, Jonathan Munsel (I23698)
4433 | In the Federal Census of 1860, Lyman is listed as Sylvanus Remington. He and his wife Lydia are living at Richland, Holmes Co., OH. They have a daughter Mary F. 2. They are listed next to Oliver and Sally Remington, and next to John & Amelia Remington and family. Probably the families were all on one farm together. In the Federal Census of 1870, Lyman and Louisa are ages 37 and 32, living at Richland Holmes Co., OH. Three daughters are with them: Mary 12, Lydia 6, & Lucy 4. They are next to John & Almera and family. In the Federal Census of 1880, Liman & Louisa are still living at Richland, Holmes Co., OH. They have four children in the household: Mary F. 22, Lyda May 16, Lucy C. 13, and Hatty E. 7. In the Federal Census of 1900, Lyman & Louise are still living at Richland, Holmes Co., OH. Also in the household are Betsey Sweet 72 RI and Theresa Stoner 30 PA (Mill Op). Her mother's maiden name may have been Thompson (see RI Death Index). | Babcock, Martha C. (I26080)

In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is still at Lansingburgh: Seneca 34 NY, Mary 28 NY, Albert 6 NY, and Chas 4 NY. Seneca is a brush maker and Mary is a dress maker. In the Federal Census of 1880, "Senica" & Frances Remington, ages 44 & 38, are living on Summer Street in Somerville, Middlesex Co., MA. Children in the household are: Albert 16 and Charles 14. Seneca is still a brush maker; Frances is a dress maker. Perhaps her name is Mary Frances. I found Seneca's middle initial in Albert's death record. Seneca died at age 54 y 3 m 1 d. Cause of death -- phthisis, a type of tuberculosis. His death record identifies his parents as Norman (b Lansingburgh) and Emma E. (b Saratoga). | Remington, Seneca H. (I24725)

They are living at Champion, Jefferson Co., NY. In the 1870 census, the family is still at Champion: Abner 47 NY (cooper), Pheba C. 36 NY, Belinda 15 NY, Charles J. 1 NY, and Johnathan Remington 66 VT. By 1880 it appears that Abner has died because Celesta Smith and son Charles are living with married daughter Belinda Collar in Diana, Lewis Co., NY. Johnathan Remington 78 VT is also there. | Smith, Abner (I23390)
4440 | In the Federal Census of 1860, the family is at New Haven, CT: Hiram 37, Harriett 34, Geo H. 10, Julia R. 8, Chas D. 3, and Infant (F) 1 mo. In the Federal Census of 1870, Hiram, Harriet, and four of their children are living at Meridan, New Haven Co., CT. There is a question as to the actual parentage of Hiram, as he was born over three years before the date of his parents' marriage, when Oliver would have been 15 years old. Kay Larsen suggests that Hiram may have been a son of a relative of Vincy's, or possibly an illegitimate child of Vincy, or even of Oliver & Vincy. The town register lists Oliver and Vincy as the parents of Hiram; however, this does not preclude that he may have been adopted. | Remington, Hiram Morse (I19579)
4441 | In the Federal Census of 1860, the family is at Providence, RI: George W. Randall 42, Delaney P. 33, Jonathan W. 15, & Emma 12 (these two children likely George's by one of his previous marriages). They are next to Peleg C. & Delaney B. Remington and family. | Randall, George W. Jr. (I14124)

From great-grandson Ed Moone: I want to add to the information on my great-grandfather, Rev. Benjamin Moon. In addition to him being a Baptist Minister, he was also a mill owner. Moon Mill was located in Washington Village on Main Street in a location now occupied by a convenience store. The mill produced cotton twine most notably used for carpet warp. The mill was destroyed by fire in the early 1900's. I'd like to quote from a book that I have regarding my great-grandfather. The book is "A History of Greene and Vicinity" by Squire G. Wood, privately printed in Providence in 1936. He writes with reference to Sharp Street Church "Rev. Benjamin Moon, who lived at Washington, a mill owner, and considered well off for those days, came to us on the third Sunday for many years. He was a good man and a good preacher, although pretty lengthy sometimes." (See, it comes to me honest, I get it from my great-grandfather, lol) Rev. Moon's house was across Main Street from the mill. The house still stands. It is the house on Main Street at the corner of Holden Street. | Moon, Rev. Benjamin (I02995)

John is a farmer. In the Federal Census of 1880 the family is still at Jefferson, Butler Co., IA. They are listed right next to Christopher Renning and his first wife, Minnie (both age 24), and their daughter Clara, 6 months. The Wilson family is as follows: John Wilson 53 farmer born in Mechlenburg (Germany), Dora his wife 43 also born in same place and all their parents born there; neither can write English; son Henry 18 works in cheese factory born in IL; John 16 IL; Harvey 15 IL; Ch??? (unclear) 13 IL; Charles 10 IA; William 5 IA. In the Federal Census of 1900, John M. & Dora Wilson are ages 72 & 61, living at Pittsford, Butler Co., IA. John was born June 1827 Germany, and Dora was born July 1838 Germany. William and Chris W. Wilson and their families are listed on the same page, so they are probably sons of John & Dora, as listed in 1880. According to the census data, they have been married 40 years and have 6 children, all of them still living. John immigrated in 1857 and Dora immigrated in 1860. John is a landlord. So, it looks as if they must have met and married here, or at least they married here around the time Dora arrived. John is a naturalized citizen | Wilson, John M. (I25289)
