5104 | John was one of the original settlers of Providence, RI and one of those to whom was assigned a house and six-acre lot in 1638. John signed the "Agreement for a Form of Government" on 27 July 1640 and was chosen with nine others by the Town of Providence to meet with Commissioners from the other three towns to form a government under the Charter, 16 May 1647. He is our direct ancestor through two of his children, Mary & Moses Lippitt. Moses' daughter Martha Lippitt and Mary's son Thomas Burlingame (first cousins) married each other and had a daughter Margaret Burlingame who married Joseph Remington, Sr. They are the ancestors of my dad, Norman Remington, through the male Remington lineage. | Lippitt, John I (I05708)
5105 | John was possibly a son of Augustine Fyshe/Fish who died 26 Aug 1579 at Great Bowden, Leicestershire, England. | FYSHE, John (I22456)
5106 | John was probably killed in King Philip's War, as were two of his brothers. | Wright, John (I17274)
5107 | John was Selectman in Watertown, MA, 1764-1789 | Remington, John Sr. (I08016)
5108 | John Wood of Portsmouth died intestate; the town council divided his land on 7 May 1655. Mentioned are his widow Elizabeth, sons George, John, Thomas, & William; daughters [unnamed] Manchester; and two young daughters, Susanna & Elizabeth. I suspect that at least some of these children are from his second wife, but I don't know their dates of birth, or his dates of marriage. | WOOD, John (I01769)

5110 | John's birth record at Fall River identifies his parents as John H. and Eliza A.; father's occupation seaman; father's birthplace South Carolina; mother's birthplace Fall River. (Fall River Vol.123: Pg.108) John's marriage record to Lillie E. Shippee names his parents as John Berry & Eliza A. Elsbree. (Attleborough Vol.352: Pg.83) John was 52 when married in September of 1912, and 70 when he died. However, the marriage certificate gives his age as 59, and the gravestone appears to give his birth year as 1854. However, the official record for his second marriage in July 1884 gives his age as 24, more in agreement with the 1859 date as recorded at Fall River, MA. In the 1870 Federal Census, census, he is age 10, and in 1875 he is 15. At the age of 15 he is listed as a jeweler on the census. In 1880 he and Mabel are living in Providence; he is 20 and she is 16. John "works in jewelry.". In 1900, John H. Berry and his third wife, Laura, are living at 222 Swan St. in Providence. With them is "Eliza Alison," John's widowed mother. John's occupation is given as "silversmith." According to census data, John & Laura have been married 3 years; and, at age 19, Laura has had three children, none of whom is still living. In the 1910 Federal Census, John & Nellie are living at 10 Bowditch Place, Providence, with their two young daughters, Helen & Loretta. The census data states that they have been married four years, and that this is a second marriage for both. Grandma Allison, age 77, is in the home. John is a silversmith in a jewelry shop, and Nellie is a bench hand in a jewelry shop. In actuality, they were officially married in 1912, and it was a fourth marriage for John, and a second marriage for Ellen. Apparently they had been together since 1906. From my mom, Edna: "Both my parents worked in making jewelry, and of course you know that until recently RI was the jewelry capital of the world. That bracelet I gave you once was made of yellow gold by my father as a gift for my mother. For graduation gifts for Helen and Loretta, he gave them watches with bands made by either himself or where he worked. He gave me a bracelet which I still have, though not for graduation, since he had died by then. He had made that also. Elsie had a pendant with a semi-precious stone." At one time I thought maybe our grandparents had twins that died. John & Ellen Berry had boy/girl twins who were born 27 Oct 1923 in Providence. They both died two hours later. However, the death records for these infants show that the parents lived in Pawtucket and were born in Scotland. There is a another couple named John & Ellen Berry in the 1930 census, living childless in Pawtucket; according to the census data they were married c 1924. | BERRY, John Holland (I00010)

5111 | John's birth record at Grafton, MA, identifies him as s/o Calvin S. & Eliza J. Thurston. In the 1871 Canadian Census, the Thurston family is at Montreal, Canada: John 38, Cordelia 35, Wheeler 11, Mabel 9, Sarah 7, Lisie 5, and Susan 3. The family is Presbyterian. John is a shoemaker. The three youngest children were born in Province of Quebec, and the others were born in the US. In the Federal Census of 1880, the family is at Grafton, Worcester Co., MA: J. C. 47 farmer, Cordelia 44, Wilber 20, Mabel C. 18, Sarah 16, Elizabeth A. 14, Susanna A. 12, and Calvin S. 72 (father). Birthplace of all is given as MA. In the Federal Census of 1910, the family is at Grafton, Worcester Co., MA: John C. Thurston, 77 MA md 51 y, Cordelia Thurston 74 MA; Sarah Arnold dtr 47 MA widow, Earl 19, Alfred 12, Randolph 10, Amy D. 8, & Lois 6; the last five being John & Cordelia's grandchildren, all born in RI. | Thurston, John Coe (I25533)

5112 | John's birthplace as Troy, NY, first came to me from Delwin Remington, a descendant. John's obituary, sent to me by Delwin, mentions John's birthplace as Troy, NY. (See text of obituary below.*) Also, an online biographical sketch of Daniel O. Davis, husband of Helen C. Remington, gives Helen's father's birthplace as Troy, NY, and gives some personal history on John. (Oregon Bios Project, submitted by Jeffrey L. Elmer) In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is at Livonia, Livingston Co., NY: Jno E. 29 painter, Electa 31, Edward 8, Albro 4, Ellen 1; also Sarah Marshall 18; all b NY. In the Federal Census of 1860, the family is at Dixon, Lee Co., IL: John E. 40 painter, Electa 40, Edward 18, Alson 14, Hellen 11, Willfred 9, Noble 7; all b NY. In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is at Palmyra, Lee Co., IL: John E. 50 NY farmer, Electa 51 NY, Edward 28 NY, Alison 23 NY, Sarah 23 IL (probably his wife), Hellen 21 NY, William 21 NY, Noble 18 NY. In the Federal Census of 1880, at Union, Union Co., OR, the household is as follows: John E. 60 NY (MA/RI) farmer, Electa S. 61 NY (MA/VT), Helen C. Davis 30 NY dtr, Daniel O. Davis 31 NY s-in-law farming, Edward O. Davis 6 CO, Cora I. Davis 3 CO, Leon L. Davis 2 OR, Louisa Davis 1 OR, Grace Davis 1 month OR; and James Smith 17 AR servant. In the Federal Census of 1900, John is age 83 wd, living at Columbia, Wasco Co., OR, with married daughter Helen Davis and her family. For military service, see the following on Google Books: "Report of the adjutant general of the state of Illinois ..., Volume 4" By Illinois. Military and Naval Dept, Joseph W. Vance; p 599: lists John E. Remington, residence Dixon, as quartermaster, 2 Sep 1862, resigned for promotion 24 Nov 1863 Also at Google Books, "Illinois Artillery Officer's Civil War: The Diary and Letters of John Cheney" by Gordon Armstrong; p 196 refers to the "familiar faces" of Quartermaster John E. Remington and son of Dixon, IL, 75th Illinois Infantry, 23 Nov 1863, encamped near Chattanooga, TN, facing the Rebels. The "son' referred to could be Alson, who was in the 75th regiment as well. "US Army Register" by United States Adjutant-General's Office p 65 lists John E. Remington as Assistant Quartermaster, 13 October 1863, birthplace NY, appointed from Illinois. "Official register of the United States" by United States Civil Service Commission p 581, lists John E. Remington as postmaster of Ft. Collins, Larimer Co., CO, with a salary of $120. An ad in the "American Agriculturist" Volume 32 p 69: "Colonization in Coloradao, Information sent free. Address John E. Remington, Fort Collins, Colorado." "Jefferson Davis in Blue: The Life of Sherman's Relentless Warrior" by Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes, Jr., Gordon D. Whitney, p 275, mentions Captain John E. Remington, chief quartermaster, as an "old hand" assisting Jefferson Davis. "Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate" Volume 14, Part 1 by United States Congress, p 363, mentions "Brevet Major John E. Remington, assistant quartermaster of Volunteers, for faithful and meritorious services during the war, to date from March 13 1865." Page 421 has an almost identical entry, for Captain John E. Remington. "United States Congressional serial set, Issue 3409" p 443 & 444, contains a report by Captain John E. Remington, assistant quartermaster, US Army, 14th Army Corps; written at Goldsborough, NC, on 1 Apr 1865. The report concerns the campaign at Savannah, GA. He is also mentioned as part of staff on p 437 in the report of Major General Jefferson C. Davis. The above-mentioned biographical sketch of Daniel O. Davis and his wife Helen C. Remington has the following information about Helen's father, John E. Remington: b Troy, NY well-known artist md Electa S. Morse (died 24 Nov 1891, age 73) went to Pike's Peak 1859 enlisted in 71st IL Volunteers at Dixon, IL mustered 22 Sep 1862 appointed ass't quartermaster, rank of captain, 13 Oct 1863 rank of lt colonel 13 Mar 1864 rank of major 13 Mar 1865 hon discharged 13 Mar 1866 after war engaged in farming in IL 1871 went to Ft. E. Remington, a veteran of the Civil War, died in the city of The Dalles, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. O. Davis, Oct. 7, 1900. Deceased was born in Troy, NY, Sept. 26, 1819. By occupation he was a painter. In 1855 he removed to Dixon, IL. Entering the Union army in 1861, he served his country faithfully to the close of the war, holding various positions of honorable importance. First, as quarter-master of the 75th Illinois volunteers, next as major, and lastly he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel by brevet and quarter-master of the 15th army corps, following Gen. W. T. Sherman to close of war. Colonel Remington came to Oregon in the year 1876, and has resided continuously in this state since that time. He was highly respected by all good people who knew him. A patriot, soldier, and an excellent citizen, his life and influence as a benediction rests upon his descendants and neighbors. He leaves three generations of children to mourn his loss. His wife died several years since, and his remains were laid to rest by the side of hers in the family cemetery." | Remington, John Edward (I24721)

5119 | John's will dated 8 March 1687 at Portsmouth, RI, mentions his father Peleg, brother Job, and wife Sarah. | Tripp, John (I01498)
5120 | John's will does not mention his wife, but a wife named Elizabeth is in a deed dated 9 June 1744, Exeter. She may have been a second wife -- not known, as she must have died before he wrote his will, dated 7 Nov 1749 (proved 13 Mar 1753). It mentions six sons and one daughter, all of whom I have listed on the tree. I have roughly estimated the birth years of their children. Some online family trees have the name of John's wife as Lydia Armstrong. One tree notes that John & Lydia deeded land to son Samuel in 1738 (where? possibly NK) I found his estimated year of birth at find-a grave.com, but this needs more research to confirm. | Dawley, John (I27777)

5121 | John's will is dated 31 Oct 1863 and proved 12 June 1865. It mentions his wife Mary A.; wife's aunt Tabitha Gorton; dec'd brother Emanuel Rice; sister who married Jonathan Remington; and two nephews, Thomas & Ferdinand, sons of Jonathan Remington. | Rice, John (I04674)
5122 | John's will mentions by name his wife, two half-brothers (Henry & Peleg) and one half-sister (Sarah) who is deceased; he also lists all of his nieces and nephews. I haven't yet figured out how they are half-siblings to him, since they all have the same last name and also seem to have the same mother, based on her will and their dates of birth. Possibly Benjamin died and Elizabeth married another Mr. Tibbetts, and eventually was widowed a second time. I haven't found a record of such a marriage, but many such records are missing, or were never recorded. | Tibbetts, John Gifford (I07083)

5133 | JOHNSON, Rosannah 1786c - 15 JAN 1873 EG038 Notes from Linda Mathew: "Ezekiel married Rosannah (Hunt) Verry sometime after 28 Nov. 1837, when they signed a prenuptial agreement. Rosannah had property in East Greenwich and North Kingstown (probably inherited from her husband). They agreed that she would keep her property and if she died first, it was to go to her heirs. If Ezekiel died first, Rosannah was to get her thirds. It sounds like Rosannah made a pretty good deal. Rosannah outlived Ezekiel by a good many years and died in 1873 at the age of 87." | Hunt, Rosannah (I16561)

5137 | Jonathan & Lorana were married at Providence, RI; had children born and/or registered at East Greenwich, RI; and probably moved to Berkshire County, MA, sometime after Nov 1736 but before July 1741 (see notes below). They may have had other children, and -- Jonathan may have married again. These are unsolved mysteries at this point. One of their children, Jonathan, appears to have returned to Rhode Island, at least for a while. Warwick Land Evidence, dated 22 Nov 1736: Stephen Remington of Providence, mariner, sold to Jonathan Remington of East Greenwich, mariner, one lot in Chippowinoxit, Warwick, Lot #16, one and one-half acres; signed by Stephen Remington, witnessed by Dan Remington. (These three were brothers. This land was most likely a narrow waterfront lot extending from Post Rd. down to the cove, in the area just south of Cowesett Rd. This area is still called Cheppowinoxet.) The following probably applies to this Jonathan: In an official document dated 18 July 1741, Thomas Rice, Esq., Sherrif of the County of Providence, refers to an act of the General Assembly of the Colony of RI in sessions held at Providence on the last Wednesday of Oct 1736, concerning "an act for making the real estate of a person that has left this colony or concealed themselves therein or do not live in this government liable for the payment of debts . . . By virtue of which said act the lands or real estate of Jonathan Remington late of East Greenwich in Providence County, mariner, has been attached at the suits of John Walton of Warwick -- merchant, James Gould of Newport, and Mercy Gorton of Warwick, innholder . . . judgments were obtained by John Walton and Mercy Gorton against Jonathan Remington at the last Inferior Court of Common Pleas held at Providence on the second Tuesday of December last, and by James Gould at the last Inferior Court of Common Pleas held at Newport in November." Jonathan Remington's land was sold at "Public Venue" for 97 pounds 10 shillings, to Philip Arnold of Warwick and John Potter of Providence, Esq. Thomas Rice, Sherriff, acknowledged receipt in bills of credit . . . "Philip Arnold & John Potter have been conveyed a certain tract of land in Warwick and by examination containing 269 acres more or less it is all the part or parcel of a certain farm number 17 in The Grand Purchase of Warwick belonging to the said Jonathan Remington, bounded on the north by the farm of John & Richard Waterman, southerly by Warwick's southern boundary, westerly by the RI/CT border, easterly however as per plot of land or however otherwise bounded or reputed to be bounded." Dated 18 July 15th yr of George II, 1741. Recorded at Warwick 5 Nov 1741 in 7th Great Book of Land Evidence by John Wickes, Town Clerk. (above record found at RI Historical Library, Manuscript Room, Providence, RI) Did he have a second wife named Susannah? A newspaper entry of Oct. 1753 announced the marriage of Jonathan, of Jonathan & Susanah Remington of East Greenwich, to Mary Thurston. Or was that another Jonathan? A notation in "One Hundred and Sixty Families" by John Osburne Austin, p. 13, suggests that she was b 1703 and that her name was Susanna Lorana Arnold." (Definitely needs more research.) | Remington, Jonathan (I02919)

5143 | Jonathan served in the Revolution from MA & VT. He enlisted at Cummington, MA. His marriage to Martha was obtained from Rootsweb's Worldconnect, so needs verification to determine that it is the same Jonathan Remington. That genealogy lists 11 children for this couple. Other family notes I have seen agree. I could not find his birth record at Abington, but Lois Remington Smith lists Jonathan with the children of Joshua & Ruth. However, some genealogies have this Jonathan as a son of Thomas Remington b 1726 and his wife Rachel Stowell. Also, others show his birthplace as Cummington, Hampshire Co., MA, and his death as c 1840 at Wallingford, VT. The Federal Census of 1830 at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT lists a Jonathan Rimmington and a Jonathan Rimmington Jr. The household of the former includes 1 male age 70<80, 1 female 50>60; and three other females -- 1-40<50, 1-10<15, & 1-15<20. In 1833 when he appeared for his pension hearing, he said he had lived in Wallingford for 51 years (since 1782). The last pension payment was made 12 Sep 1834 (to his wife?). | Remington, Jonathan (I11303)

5148 | Jonathan's name as a son in this family was suggested by Barbara Chase, since land evidence and census records show that a Jonathan Remington was living in Scituate near Joseph Remington. However, those references may be for the Jonathan who married Mary Havens; he was a son of Thomas Remington of Scituate. Thomas was older brother to Joseph. | Remington, Jonathan (I19545)
