5351 | Lydia's name was obtained from the death record of son Hiram. In the 1850 Federal Census, Lydia B. Ellsbree is age 57, living at a boarding house in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. With her are the following: Samuel Ellsbree 40, Joseph Ellsbree 30, Hiram Ellsbree 24, & Eliza A. Ellsbree 32. I am not sure if Eliza is a daughter or daughter-in-law. | Rogers, Lydia B. (I18765)

5353 | M. Benns has his names as Charles instead of Clarence. This couple is in the 1880 Federal Census at Burrillville, Providence, RI, next door to half-brother DeWitt & family. Clarence's occupation is listed as "country store." He must have died shortly after the census was taken. According to the RI Cemetery Database, his gravestone says: "Was lost from the steamer Narragansett." In the "Pawtuxet Valley Gleaner" 21 Aug 1880: "The body of Clarence S. Remington who was lost from the steamer Narragansett on the night of the disaster, has been washed ashore on Fisher's Island." (from Andrew Boisvert) The records of the North Scituate Baptist Church must be somewhat in error. There it says: "Drowned in the Stonington disaster on Long Island Sound 24 July 1870." Either they got the date wrong, or were thinking of a different catastrophe. This little family went through so much heartache. In 1880 two of their children died, followed by Clarence, the husband and father, in the steamship disaster. They may have had two other children who died in infancy, as indicated by two nearby gravestones: Roy & Flossie. | Remington, Clarence Sydney (I04142)

In the 1920 Federal Census, they are living at Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, with their married daughter Zetta Russo and her husband and daughter. | Remington, Mahlon H. (I15301)

The children's birth are registered at East Greenwich to Thomas & Mercy Nichols. | Reynolds, Mercy (I10860)

5369 | Many genealogies have Samuel's date of death as 18 March 1763, a date of death shown in the Barbour Collection for a Samuel Remington. However, that date cannot pertain to this particular Samuel, for reasons stated below. Samuel Remington is named as Executor in the will of his sister, Hannah Leavitt, dated 3 Feb 1769. The documents show that Samuel presented the inventory of her estate on 15 June 1769 at Suffield. Two entries in the Barbour Collection of vital records refer to him as Samuel 2nd, but the death date of 1763 does not say Samuel 2nd. Furthermore, it has no age at death. Findgrave.com shows the headstone of Samuel Remington who died 17 Aug 1788 in 82nd year of his age; this agrees with his birth year of 1707 (he would have been age 81 when he died in his 82nd year). Inscription at Zions Hill Cemetery: In memory of Mr. Samuel Remington who died Augst 17th 1788 in the 82nd year of his age There is a debt By future due Which I have paid And so must you See also Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices 1629-1934. | Remington, Samuel Sr. (I05667)

|
5376 | Margaret Bly was probably a widow when she married Allen. I have estimated her birth year. She was "of Berlin, NY." The names of her children, surname Bly, were obtained from the estate documents of Allen Remington. Apparently there were some concerns over the distribution of assets, and a plea was entered on their behalf. Before Margaret married Allen Remington, she gave birth to an illegitimate son named Benjamin, born 2 Oct 1803. After Allen and Margaret married, Benjamin was brought up in the household with the other children and took the surname Remington, as Allen was the only father he ever knew. He later moved with half-brother Daniel Bly to NY State; Benjamin married Sarah Jane Burger; their son Jeremiah Berger Remington was a notable figure in KS. | Greenfield, Margaret (I09618)
