| The marriage of Jeremiah and Sally was recorded in two newspapers: The Providence Journal of 11 Jan 1827, and the Providence Phenix of 24 Dec 1826. (See newspaper announcements transcribed in Arnold's Vital Record of RI) I have a photocopy of the original marriage entry recorded at West Greenwich Town Hall (p. 46), which reads: "Warwick December 24th AD 1826 -- I hereby Certify that Mr. Jeremiah Whitford and Miss Sally W. Tibbits were Lawfully Joined Together in Marriage by me the Subscriber Jonathan Wilson" The family Bible says they were married at West Greenwich. It is unclear exactly where they were married, although the record at West Greenwich has a reference to Warwick. Under that entry the births of their two children are recorded: Mercy Waterman Whitford and Charles Carmi Whitford. Also, according to "Alden G. Beaman's Vital Record of RI, New Series," an infant son was born in 1830 and died 1 April 1830, buried in West Greenwich. | Family F00166

| The marriage record at Jamestown says John Cary was "of New Bristol" and Damaris Arnold was "of Jamestown." They were married by Edward Carr. | Family F01760
| The marriage record at Warwick identifies Jeremiah's father as John. Jeremiah's will dated 19 Mar 1715/16 mentions by name his wife Mary, three sons, and three daughters (with married names). John is identified as the eldest son and Sarah the eldest daughter; also mentioned are grandchildren Mary & Jeremiah Smith, presumably both children of John. I have estimated the birth years of some of Jeremiah & Mary's children. The following notes are taken (unedited & unverified) from Alfred Rose's family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect. They appear to be reliable based on my other research: JEREMIAH SMITH was married at Warwick, R. I. Jany. 2, 1672 to Mary Gereardy. He was made freeman in 1675 and was taxed 4s. at Portsmouth in 1680, was constable in 1688, and in 1696 with his brother John signed an agreement about the ferry at Boston Neck in Kingstown. With his brother John he was granted the privilege of a ferry at Boston Neck by the Assembly for seven years at | Smith, Jeremiah (I20320)

| The marriage record gives her name as Elena. | Family F01459
| The marriage record gives her name as Mrs. Elizabeth Kinnecutt, but she must have been Sarah because the births of their children give her name as Sarah. 1755 MUNRO, Nathan, of Warren, and Mrs. Elizabeth Kinnecutt, of Bristol; m. by Rev. John Burt, May 25, 1755. Vol. 1 p. 74 Marriage Bristol | Family F06393

| The marriage record gives the names of the two fathers, Simon Kettle & John Wells. | Family F02075
| The marriage record has her name as Ann Berry Hickman. (source: M.K. & Barry Miles in Miles Files Version 7, Eastern Shore Public Library website) In the Federal Census of 1880, Anne Lewis is apparently a widow aged 70. With her is son Perry 40, son Samuel 38, and Annie 23, possibly Samuel's wife. They are still at Accomack, VA. | Berry, Ann (I22508)
| The marriage record has her parents' names as Wilet (?) & Sarah Slocum, but her name is given as Cornelia M. Woodman; there is a notation under her name, "by adoption." The marriage notice in the New Bedford Mercury says "adopted dtr late Brownell Woodman." So, possibly she was adopted by the Slocums. Her death record gives her parents' names as Brownell Woodman and Alice Slocum (b Tiverton). | Woodman, Cornelia Mead (I05864)
| The marriage record has his name as Thomas, but the marriage intention says John. | Morley, John (I08217)
| The marriage record identifes Pardon as son of Captain William. | Potter, Pardon (I26794)
| The marriage record identifies Gideon as son of Philip, deceased. ARNOLD Gideon, at Warwick, aged 54 years, newspaper report of March 15, 1796. ARNOLD Gideon, Esq., at Warwick, in 55th year, reported in Gazette of March 12, 1796. The will of Gideon Arnold of Warwick, yeoman, is dated 5 Jan 1796, proved 14 March 1796. It mentions wife Patience; sons Daniel, Benjamin, and George; dtrs Sally Baker (w/o Olney), Lucy (single), and Patience (youngest, single). | Arnold, Gideon (I08390)
| The marriage record identifies Hannah as d/o Thomas. | Fry, Hannah (I17646)
| The marriage record identifies Henry's parents as Simeon C. & Alzada T., and gives his birthplace as Scituate, RI. Susie's parents are identified as John C. & Cordelia, and her birthplace is given as Montreal, Canada. Henry C., a clerk of Scituate, was age 25; Susie A., of Grafton, was 21. It was a first marriage for both. | Family F08307
| The marriage record identifies her as Betsey Tanner, of Benjamin. | Tanner, Elizabeth "Betsey" (I25502)
| The marriage record identifies her as d/o Capt. Samuel. | Stafford, Barbara (I08930)
| The marriage record identifies her as d/o Capt. Thomas Remington. Mary Rice is mentioned as a daughter in the will of Thomas Remington of Warwick, dated 18 June 1798. | Remington, Mary (I02838)
| The marriage record identifies her as d/o Thomas Remington. I have made an assumption that the Mary Remington, daughter of Thomas, who married Joseph Bennett is the same Mary who is a daughter of Thomas & Mary (Collins) Remington (this needs more research to confirm). On 15 Sep 1837, Mary Bennett, at age 84, gave a sworn statement concerning her brother Thomas's Revolutionary War service. I am making an assumption that they are both children of Thomas Remington & Mary Collins, since this couple had a daughter Mary born 20 Mar 1753, and this agrees closely with the date of birth calculated from the gravestone of Mary Bennett. BENNETT, MARY [REMINGTON] 1754c - 14 JAN 1847 WK016 (RI Cemetery Database) The gravestone says she died on 14 Jan 1847 at the age of 93 y 10 m 4 d. This would compute to a dob of 10 Mar 1753. The online transcript has her dob as 20 Mar 1853. It is possible that Mary (Remington) Bennett and her brother Thomas, Jr., were children of a different Thomas Remington; however, given their ages and locality, this family is the most likely. Some genealogies have another Mary Remington, d/o Thomas Remington and Abigail Eldred(ge), as the one who married Joseph Bennett; sometimes two marriages are given for Mary. However, this is not possible, since the other Mary married Josephus Rice and is mentioned as Mary Rice in the will of her father thomas Remington dated 11 June 1798. Joseph Bennett and his wife Mary (Remington) had a child in July 1798, whose birth is recorded in the VRs, so they cannot be the same Mary. | Remington, Mary (I04075)
| The marriage record identifies her as Hannah Sweet, daughter of Henry of East Greenwich. I am not sure that this birth date is the one for this Hannah, but the location and father's name agree, and her age matches James's. Apparently she already had a daughter, Waite Sweet, who later married her husband's son, Uriah Matteson, in 1764. The bride and groom must have been step-siblings. | Sweet, Hannah (I04296)
| The marriage record identifies his mother as Emeline (Rounds) Manchester. | Manchester, Bailey (I02393)
| The marriage record identifies Isaac's parents as Jeremy Manchester & Mary H. Dennis. Delia's parents are identified as Benjamin Macomber and Diana Simmons. | Family F00894
| The marriage record identifies John as s/o Charles. John's will mentions his sons Charles & Thomas, daughters Welthian Potter, w/o Caleb, and Deliverance Holden (single and incapable), and her Aunt Ruth Fry. HOLDEN John, Esq., at Warwick, in 100th year. Gazette of Nov. 22, 1800. (death reported at Providence) HOLDEN John, Esq., at Warwick, in 100th year; had perfect health for last 55 years and died without pain or distress. (Chronicle of Nov. 28, 1800; reported at Providence) HOLDEN John, at Warwick, in 100th year, had enjoyed the best of health to the last. (Journal of Nov. 19, 1800) | Holden, John (I09952)
| The marriage record identifies Penelope as daughter of Stephen & Penelope Remington. Joseph and Penelope were married by "Teddeman Hull." | Family F01107
| The marriage record identifies Robert as "of William" so I have made an assumption that he belongs in this family. This needs more research to confirm. There were several William Potters in RI, including in both Foster and Scituate, so I have tentatively linked him to the William in Foster because that is where he was married. | Potter, Robert (I26831)
| The marriage record identifies Thomas as s/o Jonathan, dec'd (supposedly he died in Jan 1738; could the marriage have been recorded after that?). The marriage was recorded at Warwick, but says they were married at NK. | Hill, Thomas (I27248)
| The marriage record identifies William's parents as H. A. & Sally A. Remington; Chloe's parents are Asaph & Caroline Carpenter. It was a first marriage for both. | Family F05586
| The marriage record in 1863 says it is his second marriage, and Sarah's third. His parents are given as Benj. Remington and Sarah Simonds. I have made an assumption that he belongs to these parents, based on the similarity of names and the location. I have not been able to find Phidellio in any of the other censuses. | Remington, Phidellio (I23409)
| The marriage record in Arnold's VRs has his name as Nicholas Johnston. | Family F00908
| The marriage record names Clarinda's mother as Emeline (Rounds) Manchester. Perhaps she died in childbirth. | Manchester, Clarinda (I02394)
| The marriage record names him as Thomas Remington, of Daniel of Warwick. This is the most likely family group in which to place him. Several genealogists have done so, but realize it is an assumption or "educated guess." His birth is not found in the Warwick vital records along with Samuel, Mary, & Daniel. He left his wife Freelove around Jan 1765, and lived "in adultery." She petitioned for divorce in 1771, and it was granted. Did Thomas have children by another woman, or have a second marriage? See notes for Freelove. His daughter's marriage record mentions her father Thomas, dec'd; thus I have entered his date of death as bef. 20 Dec 1789. | Remington, Thomas (I04764)
| The marriage record names the bride as Mary Girreard, of John. Mary Smith is mentioned in several land deeds of South Kingstown and in Newport court records. On 12 Jan 1722/23 she is "of Prudence Island" when she gives by SK deed a female negro child to a granddaughter, a daughter of Mary's son Ephraim. This deed is witnessed by William Remington & John Peirce. In Dec 1728 she is identified as "of Prudence Island." On 23 Aug 1731 she is mentioned as "widow of SK" and mother of Ebenezer of South Kingstown. I have made an assumption that she died at SK. According to Newport court records, Mary, Jeremiah, & John Smith had to pay Emmanuel Clark for rental of a farm in SK. In the court notes, Josiah Remington is mentioned as the "Barrar" who will carry 40 shillings payment to Clark. Was he the court courier or a relative? He may have been a lawyer or other court official at this point. | Girard, Mary (I20321)
| The marriage record of Benjamin Elsbree & Ruth Davis identifies her parents as George & Ruth Read. Her first husband must have been a Mr. Davis. In 1850, the family is living near other Read family members. Based on their names, I think her mother may have been Ruth Hathaway. In 1860, Ruth I. Davis is age 44, a widow, living at Fall River, MA, with Abel R. Davis and family, next to Emory Davis and family. These are probably her sons by her first marriage. She is really Ruth Elsbree. In 1870 she is living next to Elizabeth Davis and family, most likely her daughter-in-law and grandchildren. | Read, Ruth (I18643)
| The marriage record says Daniel was "of Scituate, son of Joseph," so I am making an assumption that this Daniel and his marriage at Cranston belongs to this family line. | Remington, Daniel (I09927)
| The marriage record says Hannah was "of Tiverton." Hammah Boomer is mentioned as a daughter in her father's will dated 11 July 1732 at Dartmouth, MA. | HATHAWAY, Hannah (I19665)
| The marriage record says Sanford is a broom maker age 24, born in Hatfield, son of Alvin Sanderson. In the Federal Census of 1860, Sanford R. and Eliza E. Sanford, ages 26 and 24, are living at Whately, Franklin Co., MA. Sanford is a broom maker. In the Massachusetts State Census of 1865, the family is at Hatfield, MA: Sanford Sanderson M 30y Massachusetts Eliza E Sanderson F 28y Massachusetts Emma A Sanderson F 4y Massachusetts In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is at Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA: Sanford 35, Eliza 34, Emma 9, and Nettie 3. Sanford is still a broom maker. In 1880 Sanford Sanderson is age 46, living in Hatfield, Hampshire Co., MA. His wife is Caroline, age 44. Sanford is a laborer. | Sanderson, Sanford R. (I19975)
| The marriage record says she was born at Millbury, MA. | Remington, Hellen Rowena (I11078)
