7351 This date of birth was obtained from the marriage record to Harry Briggs. Magnan, Mary Dorothy (I02754)

7352 This date of death is found in the Cranston Town Council meeting notes. It belongs to "William Remington of Cranston, schoolmaster." I am not sure that it belongs to this particular William, but at this point I merely am attempting to reconstruct a possible lineage for these individuals. Research is ongoing to determine the actual relationships among these Remington family members.

The will of William Remington, of Cranston, schoolmaster, is dated 2 Apr 1768 and was proved 1 June 1768. It mentions daughters Elizabeth Remington and Anne Vial, deceased; grandson John Vial son of dtr Ann deceased. Also mentioned is Waite Abbot dtr of Mary Abbot (no relationship specified). Executor was friend Dr. William Aldrich; witnesses were Benjamin Wescot Jr., William Burton, and Nils Higinbotham.

It is known that the William Remington who married Mary Manton was a schoolmaster on Jamestown, probably Prudence Island, and possibly elsewhere. Therefore it is a reasonable assumption to construct this family as I have done.

I have estimated the date of marriage based on the will of Mary's father, which implies that she was still single in 1723.

See notes for William (Sr). It has not been determined that this (Jr) is the William Remington who married Mary and had these three children, Elizabeth, Stephen, & Abigail, born in Little Compton but registered in Providence. He may or may not be the William Remington who married Mary Manton. Research is ongoing to sort out the data on the William Remingtons of RI.

The births of Elizabeth, Stephen, & Abigail, to parents identified as William & Mary (m.n. unknown), were recorded at Providence, but there is a notation that the first two were born at Little Compton and the third at Providence (source: microfilm at RI State Archives). See previous paragraphs -- I am not sure that these three children belong to this particular William.

From Portsmouth land evidence:

WR of Po bought and sold land from/to John Allin, s/o Wm, of P.I., 6 Jan 1738/9 and 3 Feb 1738/9; this WR was a schoolmaster; he also witnessed three other deeds on 6 Jan 1738/9, along with Caleb Hill & William Havens; also witnessed three other deeds on 3 Feb 1738/9, along with Caleb Hill, John Allin, William Havens, & Giles Slocum. It appears that he bought and sold the same 50 acres, land bordered on three sides by three Allens (by John Allin - my own land, William Allin my honoured father, and my son William Allin) and on the fourth by the sea. WR bought 50 acres and a house in Jan, pd 750 pounds, witnessed by Caleb Hill & John Ingraham; and sold 50 acres in Feb., witnessed by Caleb Hill & Wm Sanford. No wives mentioned.
(Po Land Ev Bk 4 p 142 & 195)

WR witnessed deed of land sale from Ebenezer Allen to John Remington, laborer,
3 or 30 June 1744. This was JR "late of Warwick, now of P.I." He paid 400 pounds for 20 acres. No wives mentioned. (Po Land Ev Bk 4 p 359)

From Portsmouth Town Council records:

8 Aug 1743: William Remington schoolmaster ordered to depart this town (Bk 3 p 292)

8 Oct 1744: William Remington school-master (and three others) ordered to depart town with their respective families (Bk 4 p 4)

12 Oct 1744: Caleb Bennett was "served with warrant to remove William Remington, keeper of the school in the Southermost School-house belonging to this town, out of this Town" (Bk 4 p 7)

8 Dec 1746: William Remington, school-master, given certificate for himself and family to reside in Providence (Bk 4 p 19)

13 Nov 1752: William Remington served with order to draw 5 pounds old Tenor out of Town Treasury towards his support and relief; also served with certificate to reside in Town of Coventry (Bk 4 p 72)

12 Mar 1753: William Remington and family served with certificate to reside in Town of Coventry (same as above, with added words to include family); the following year on 9 Sep 1754 another schoolmaster of PI named Celly was warned out of Po, so perhaps this suggests that the family of William Remington, schoolmaster, finally left for good. (Bk 4 p 74)

From Warwick Town Council Records (courtesy of Cherry Fletcher Bamberg):

10 April 1749: William Remington and his family presented a certificate from Portsmouth and were accepted as inhabitants.

7 February 1749/50: William Remington, who had come to town with his family from Portsmouth was to be notified to appear.

7353 This David, at age 16 on 17 Sept 1756, chose his "uncle" Samuel Remington to be his guardian. Apparently this "uncle" was the brother of his mother's first husband, Thomas Remington. (Source: "Sabin-Remington-Hunt Notes" by Gordon L. Remington, in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Oct. 1993, p. 372) Sabin, David Jr. (I10047)

7354 This Etty (Henrietta) is the grandmother of David Gregory, who lives in New Zealand with his wife Glenda. We exchanged family information on the Adcock-Slack connection. Glenda's email address as of April 2002 is: [dggregory@infogen.net.nz]. Bramley, Etty Henrietta (I02135)

7355 This family appears to be listed twice in the 1850 Federal Census, at both Warwick, RI (5 Sep); and Scituate, RI (20 Sep) -- except George, who is already married, is not listed at Scituate.

Warwick, 1850:
Thomas Remmington 42
Almira Remmington 42
George Remmington 20
Abby Remmington 18
Henry Remmington 16
Horace Remmington 13
Andrew Remmington 12
John Remmington 9

Scituate, 1850 (ancestry has mis-transcribed the surname, but the image shows Remington):
Thomas Kennington 41
Almira Kennington 41
Abby Kennington 18
Henry Kennington 16
Albert Kennington 12
Horace Kennington 9
Andrew J Kennington 6
John H Kennington 4

George is listed separately at Warick, with his wife and child:
George T Remmington 20
Betsey P Remmington 26
Byron D Remmington 1

It must be the same family, because most of the names are the same, as are the ages -- with slight differences for three of the children.

Perhaps they were living at Warwick with (or next to) Susan Remington but in that month moved to Scituate.

Thomas is not listed in the RI Death Index.

7359 This family group is in the 1860 and 1880 Federal Census at Ashford, Cattaraugus Co., NY. Bela was Justice of the Peace at Ashford in 1868.

In 1860 and 1870, there is a son Arthur living with Bela & Silphina, but in 1880 he is married; with Arthur at that time are Joseph & Loraette Remington, listed as his parents. So, I am assuming Arthur is Bela's nephew, a son of Joseph and a possible first wife.

From census data, it appears that his brother Joseph and sister Patty are also residing at Ashford.

In the Federal Census of June 1900, Bela & "Claphine" are still living at Ashford. Daughter Clare, age 26, is with them.

7360 This family group is in the 1880 Federal Census at Burrillville, Providence, RI (his name is trancsribed at "familysearch.com" as Dant C. Remington). DeWitt's mother-in-law Charlotte Harris is also with them. They are next door to DeWitt's half-brother Clarence, who was soon to die. Remington, DeWitt Clinton Jr. (I04138)

7362 This family group needs more research. The information from the book "Remington Family" compiled by Martha A. Benns, differs from the genealogy chart by Boyd Scott Remington at RIHSL. Benns has Martha Randall marrying this Matthew Remington, but it seems that she was born too late to be his wife. Rather, these two marriages seem to fit this Matthew's date of birth. "The Children and Grandchildren of Thomas Eastabrooks of Swansea, Mass." by William Jones, does not specify which Matthew Remington was married to Rachel. However, the marriage intention at Attleboro says he was "Matthew Remington of Warwick," so that is a clue that he belongs in this family group.

It is possible that Benns is correct, that this Matthew had a third marriage -- to Martha Randall, because we do not know when his second wife, Rachel, died. Possibly these two Matthews are one and the same individual. I have placed Martha Randall as a wife of this Matthew's nephew, son of Stephen.
Remington, Matthew (I02915)

7363 This family information was gleaned from cross-referencing three sources: Arnold's Vital Records, Beaman's Vital Records, and the RI Cemetery Database. Benjamin's will names all the children and some of the grandchildren (TiP 10:114-119). There may also be another daughter, Anna, born 17 June 1789; however, this may just be another name for Nancy, as Nancy was frequently used as a nickname for Ann or Anna. If there was another daughter named Anna, then she died before the will was written, 1827-1831. The son Benjamin, b. 1783, had a daughter named Mary A. (our ancestor); her son, Benjamin F. Remington, had a daughter named Mary Anna.

Benjamin Hambly, Jr. settled in the northern part of Tiverton, RI, where he cleared land, built a house, and farmed. There he grew flax and raised sheep. He was a weaver by trade. All the clothes -- including shoes -- worn by him and the family were made on the farm, by the family.

Thirteen children were born to Benjamin & Elizabeth, including one set of twins (Gardner & Amy). Benjamin died on his farm at the age of 75.

According to the private journal of Elder Peleg Burroughs of Tiverton, a Minister of the Gospel, "on the 8th day of September A. D. 1780 -- Preached at B. Hambly's upon Psalm 107:31 (O that men would praise xc) married John Manchester to M.F. and stayed all night at Bro. Davenports." 7365 This family is from MA, but appears in the 1820 census in Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY.

In 1840, the household of J. Edmunds at Brutus is as follows: free white males 2 age 10-14, 1 age 15-19, 1 age 20-29, and 1 age 60-69; free white females 1 age 10-14, 1 age 15-19, 1 age 20-29, and 1 age 50-59.

Two of the youngest children would be William and Martha; the two other young females must be Mary and Sylvia; and of course the adults are the parents.

I don't know who the other three boys are -- they could be unknown children, grandchildren, hired help, or foster children.

In 1850, the household is as follows: Joseph Edmunds 70 MA, Susanna 67 MA, William 22 NY, Martha 20 NY; also Erastus Griswold 19, and Martha Cresson (?) 14.

In the DETROIT SOCIETY FOR GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH MAGAZINE (date unknown), on p. 88 the following appears: "PRIVATE CEMETERY ON JOSEPH REMINGTON FARM, east and north of Sennett, in Brutus township, Cayuga County, New York.

From Ed Voorhees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect:
In the Boston Transcript for 19 Mar 1928 (available in the Dallas, TX, Public Library on microcard, "Boston Transcript, 1906-1941" the following is reported: EDMUNDS, CHAPMAN, STAFFORD. Joseph Edmunds, Quaker, Cheshire Mass., born March 22, 1780, died Feb. 6, 1859, married Susie or Susanna Chapman, Presbyterian, born Nov. 19, 1782, died April 11, 1867; she may have been born in Great Barrington, Mass. 7374 This information on a Charles Remington who married Susannah Budlong came from "Descendants of Roger Williams Book I Waterman & Winsor Lines" compiled by Dorothy Higson White (Baltimore: Gateway Press, Inc. 1991, p. 149).

I have used a rough estimate for his date of birth. Susannah's date of birth has not been determined, either.

Could he be the Charles Remington who later settled in NY, married Alice, and had a son named Stacy? Just speculation, as they are both named Charles.
Remington, Charles (I20434)

7375 This information on John Tibbits and his son George came from the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 12, Early RI Settlers in Rensselaer County, NY. George was the eldest of 10 children. When he was five his father and family moved to Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA, and in 1780 they moved to the village of Lansingburgh, NY. In 1784 he began his business career, and in 1787 he took his brother, Benjamin, in with him as a partner in G&B Tibbits. George remained a partner in this business until he retired about the year 1804. In 1800 he purchased a large amount of land in the Hoosick Patent; was the mayor of Troy from 1830-1836; was a member of the NY State Assembly in 1800 and 1820, and a State Senator from 1815-1818. The NSDAR Patriot Index of 1966, p. 678 lists Tibbetts, John b. 9-25-1737 d 1-27-1817 m Waite Brown, Pvt MA.

7378 This is a confusing death record or announcement: ARNOLD Samuel Greene, of Welcome and Patience, d. Sept. 5, 1778; Providence. Perhaps after he died, their other son already born was named for this one who died? See notes for siblings.

Rogers, Joseph; c1671 - 2 Oct 1710; husband of Mary. (source: "Newport, Rhode Island Colonial Burial Grounds" pub. 2009 by RI Genealogical Society, p. 245)

The will of Joseph Rogers of Newport, merchant, is dtd 20 Sep 1710 and was proved 6 Nov 1710. It mentions his wife Mary, son Joseph, and daughters Mary & Elizabeth; also "the child my wife is pregnant with"; daughter-in-law Iris Jenkins [probably stepdaughter]; brother John; and brother-in-law Edward Smith.

7383 This is the record from James N. Arnold's VRs: REMINGTON John, July 29, 1754. It is out of date order among the children. I have not seen the original at Cranston, but maybe it is 1774, which would be the correct order.

BSR's ancestry chart has the incorrect birth date for this John, with no marriage noted. He says that John was at Argyle, NY, in 1790 and at Litchfield, NY, in 1800. That may be correct. The 1790 census shows a John and a Stephen Remington at Argyle.

I don't remember my source for this marriage to Mary Green -- probably the DAR Patriot Index (needs more research). However, the death date of 1840 may be incorrect for this John Remington, since the other one (b. 1756, s/o Thomas & Abigail of Warwick) died in 1840. Someone may have confused the two John Remingtons, both born in RI around the same year.

7387 This Knapp family needs more research.

The will of David Knap of Johnston was dated 8 Jan 1826 and proved 18 Sep 1830. It mentions his wife Naomy; three sons: Zachariah, Joseph, & Moses; and one daughter, Lydia, who is single.

I am not sure how many times this David Knapp was married -- see all notes for David and his supposed wives. It may be that there were two David Knapp Jrs and that this family data should be divided between the two.

A David Knapp of Warwick, son of David, married Anne Griffin of Exeter, d/o Isaac, at West Greenwich 8 Dec 1768. Could this be the same David Knapp? I have made an assumption here that it is the same David (needs more research to confirm). Therefore, I am not absolutely certain that both of these marriages belong to the same David Knapp. Could Mariam have been his first wife and Anne the second? I have not positively resolved this. It could even have been a second marriage for his father, who may have also been a son of David.

See notes for David's son Remington Knapp. It is confirmed that his mother is Mariam. However, I don't know exactly when Remington was born.

There are two possible children for David & "Anne" Knapp: Moses B. b 2 Sep 1798, and Patience b c1787 (md. Laban Tefft Apr 1807 Johnston). If this is the same couple that were married in 1768, then Mariam must have been his first wife, or else the wife of another David Knapp. Or, Anne could have been a nickname for Mariam, also. As an alternative, David could have had a third wife also named Anne.

In the Federal Census of 1830, a David Knapp is listed at Johnston, RI. In the household are 3 males age 30 < 40, one male 80 < 90, one female 30 < 40, and one female 60 < 70. I have assumed the elderly gentleman age 80 - 90 is this David Knapp. The female is probably his wife "Naomy" mentioned in his will.

The Knapp property was located on Central Avenue in Johnston, west of what is now Route 5/Atwood Ave. Mariam's brother Caleb Remington and family members are buried at "the Knapp place."

Again, please be advised that I am not absolutely sure of these marriages for David, or of the exact birthdates of the children, or of which children belong to which wife. I have pieced David's likely family together as best I can, given the data I have, along with additional data from family trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect to fill in some gaps.

A question which remains is, is Mariam referred to in some of the vital records as Anne? Moses is identified as son of David & Anne, not David & Mariam.

7389 This marriage entry appears to be a second marriage for John, although I can not be certain of this. However, I have not yet found another John Briggs in East Greenwich at this time. So, this is based on an assumption, subject to further research. Family F02775

7390 This marriage is in the vital records at both Fall River and New Bedford, MA. It identifies William as son of Joseph & Mary W., and Martha as daughter of Charles & Eliza Waterhouse.

7391 This marriage is listed in "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" ( by Clarence Almon Torrey, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1985), which gives Elizabeth's year of death as 1657, and the years of births of their oldest known children as 1629/1630. Family F01078

7392 This marriage is listed in "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" ( by Clarence Almon Torrey, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1985), which gives the year of the birth of their first child as 1650, and locations of record as Rowley/Haverhill/Andover. Family F01077

7393 This marriage is listed in Arnold's VRs, Providence Churches, West Side, p. 217. Joseph is identified as "of Worcester, MA," and Alcy is "of Cumberland." Family F02001

7394 This marriage is listed in Seekonk/East Providence VRs; Gordon L. Remington says it was in Rehoboth. (I need to research and verify this)

At the time of their marriage, Mary Remington was "of Barrington" and David Saben was "of Rehoboth."
Family F03956

7395 This marriage is not in the RI Marriage Index, so possibly they were married in another state. Family F04666

7396 This marriage is noted in "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" by Clarence Almon Torrey. However, the entry does not indicate who Thomas's parents are.

Their marriage bond dated 4 Mar 1687 is in Supreme Court Record No. 13011 (source: "A Remington Family History" by Lois Remington Smith, p. 1).
Family F02764

7397 This marriage or marriage intention is listed in Elder James Wilson's Marriages, but the newspaper report says the minister was Rev. Mr. Shurtleff. There is also a discrepancy in the dates, as "Family Notes" by James N. Arnold has the date as 15 September, rather than 4 September.

The marriage intention was published on 20 & 27 Aug 1826 and also on 3 Sep 1826. At that time Edward was of Providence and Mary was of Pawtuxet.

A descendant, Martha Adams (Remington) (Davies) Bower, has the marriage date as 4 Sep 1826.

The cemetery information at usgwenwebarchives.net has the marriage date as 4 Sep 1826.

7398 This marriage record is confusing because the marriage intention says John Nottage. Also, there seems to be no distinction between Josias and his father. The marriage to Mary could have been a fourth marriage for Josias Sr. Nottage, Josias (I23625)

7399 This marriage to Phebe Case is probably a second marriage for Samuel, since his son Rufus was born c 1773 (RI Cemetery Database). Samuel's will dated 8 June 1813 WG, proved 27 Sep 1813, mentions his wife Phebe; sons Rufus, Amon, Jonathan, James, & Daniel: daughters Ruth Whitman, Ase Mires, Martha Potter, Sarah Kinyon, & Tabitha Case.

I have very roughly estimated the birth years of Samuel's children mentioned in his will, specifically those by his first wife.
