851 Apparently Cooley and his brother Dennis were named for the town physician, Dennis Cooly, who lived nearby in Washington, Macomb Co., MI, in 1850 (age 61, born in MA). Remington, Cooley (I12889)

852 Apparently Cynthia was given her middle name for her aunt Mary (Remington) Cruff. Remington, Cynthia Cruff (I04442)

853 Apparently Dennis and his brother Cooley were named for the town physician, Dennis Cooly, who lived nearby in Washington, Macomb Co., MI, in 1850 (age 61, born in MA).

Although the age is off about five years, he is probably the Dennis Remington, age 53, living at Chicago (Ward 8), Cook Co., IL, in the 1900 Federal Census. His place of birth (MI), and parents' place of birth (NY), are correct, however, agreeing with the data on the 1850 & 1860 censuses. His wife, Alma, is age 32 (?), b. Sweden. According to the census, Dennis & Alma have been married 9 years. They have four children in the household: May, age 7 (Apr 1893); Grace, age 5 (Feb 1895); Maud, age 2 (May 1898); & Joseph, age 4 months (Feb 1900); all b IL.

By 1910, Dennis is gone. See notes for Alma.

854 Apparently Edward married Amey Bull & Abigail Davis; some genealogies say it is not clear which one was the mother of Edward II. But, see marriage story below. Edward was Attorney General of RI from 1677 to 1680; he was General Solicitor (same job, different title) in 1667, 1669/70, 1672, and 1677. He was Deputy to the RI General Court in 1678/9 and 1686, and was also a captain and lieutenant at Newport. He was probably a son of John "Webb" Richmond b.1592 & Elizabeth Nicholas, who came to America in 1635.

In 1656, Edward's Richmond's attorneys unsuccessfully sued Richard Ussell, who was Abigail's legal husband, she having been forced to marry him when Edward was already "espoused to" her. Later they successfully argued the case on the basis of trespass for breach of covenant. A petition in Abigail's name was presented to the General Assembly resulting in a declaration that the prior marriage to Ussell was "an unlawful marriage." Edward and Abigail had to pay a fine of forty shillings for living together and conceiving a child. The Court of Trials married the couple "for preventing of the like Temptation." (from "the Transatlantic Constitution" by Mary Sarah Bilder)

The following is from Daniel P. Himes' genealogy at Geni.com: "Abigail Davis, the first wife of Edward Richmond . . went to court in 1657 to annul her forced marriage to Richard Ussell. The court committee, headed by Roger Williams, finally decided in her favor, but only after delaying the decision for six weeks . . . The following summer (1658) Abigail and Edward were charged with living together contrary by law, and having a child (Abigail, born 1656) out of wedlock. They were fined and then conveniently declared to be married by the court 'as they been twice published according to law but . . . (Rev.) Obediah Holmes forbade it.' "

855 Apparently Elizabeth and Susan were married on the same day, if the records are accurate. Family F01168

856 Apparently Elizabeth died shortly after giving birth to twin girls. Unknown, Elizabeth (I27418)

857 Apparently Frances married Paris after his first wife died. Tucker, Frances (I14172)

858 Apparently Henri was adopted by his mother's second husband, and his name was changed to Harry George Remington. See notes and family under George Ward Remington and wife Ella Fitch. Chatain, Henri George (I29463)

859 Apparently Hiram was married twice, but no marriage records for either marriage have been found.

According to Hiram's gravestone, he died in the 23rd year of his life.

See the following quote:

"Hiram Greene, son of Judge Benjamin and grandson of Col. Isaac. His first wife's only son died at manhood. His second wife was Abigail Johnson of Greene descent. [Abigail, Daniel, Abigail Greene-Johnson, Usal Greene, John, John]. By her he had Tryphena and Benjamin. Hiram died, aged but 23, though twice married and the father of three children." (source: "The Greene Family and its Branches" by Lora S. LaMance, Mayflower Pub Co.)

Also note this from Google Books (snippet view available only):

The following is a partial quote from "Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" pub. by Henry Ward, Sec'y, 1846, p 7, January, 1846: "Upon the petition of Abigail Greene of Coventry, A. Greene, in this State, guardian of the persons and estates of Tryphenia H. Greene and Benjamin Greene, minors, children of Hiram Greene, late of said Coventry, deceased, praying for the reasons therein stated, that . . . "

860 Apparently his parents had another son born earlier of the same name who died young. Jonathan was born at South Kingstown, but his birth was registered at East Greenwich. Pearce, Jonathan (I13642)

861 Apparently Jane was dependent on public aid; her name appears several times in the Exeter Town Council Records:

12 Jan 1754
"Whereas Jane Whitford daughter of Joseph Whitford dec is become chargable to town of Ex it was decided that North Kingstown is the town wherin (sic) the said Jane was last legally settled; thus ordered that said Jane Whitford be sent to NK."

862 Apparently Jeremiah married twice. He had a daughter Sarah with his first wife, Elizabeth. After her death, he married Deborah Peckham and they had a son Jeremiah. Source: notes from a published genealogy at ancestry.com. Clarke, Jeremiah (I27832)

863 Apparently Joseph Henry Remington was named after his two grandfathers, Joseph Remington and Henry Orner.

In the 1870 Federal Census, he is listed as Joseph H.; in 1880 he is called Henry.
Remington, Joseph Henry (I14159)

864 Apparently Josephine was adopted by her mother's second husband, and her name was changed to Josephine Adele Remington. See notes and family under George Ward Remington and wife Ella Fitch. Chatain, Josephine Adele (I29464)

865 Apparently one of Joseph's wives was Hannah Remington. Could she have been the daughter of John Remington and Mercy Jones, born 25 March 1725? Mills, Joseph Jr. (I28082)

866 Apparently Susanna (Susan) and her sister Elizabeth were married on the same day. Family F01467

867 Apparently there were two individuals of this exact same name, as two marriages were reported for Rhodes Greene Allen in the year 1811 -- one in March (to Rebecca Bowen) and one in September (to Sarah P. Jones). These cannot be marriages of the same man because the death of Rebecca C. Allen, wife of Rhodes, was reported in 1822.

In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is at Providence, RI, as follows: Rhodes Allen 59, Mary Ann 49, Richmond 18, Edward 15, Thomas 7, Mary 16, Caroline 10, Charles 29, John 37, & Rhodes 34 (all born RI).

In the Federal Census of 1870, Rhodes is age 74, living with son George Allen and family at Providence.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Rhodes Allen is age 87, a rope maker, living at Providence. With him are son George W. L. (a moulder) and daughter-in-law Matilda (sews carpets).

His grave is supposedly at the North Burial Ground in Providence, but I have not personally seen it:
ALLEN RHODES G 1792 - 11 OCT 1880 PV001

I have not viewed the death record or the RI Death Index listing for Rhodes, but I hope this would confirm the identity of his parents.
Allen, Rhodes Greene (I26003)

868 Apparently William also sailed the seas. The records at New Bedford have a William S. Remington, age 22 on 24 Sep 1859, described as born in New Bedford, 5'8 1/2" with light skin, light hair, and blue eyes.

In 1870, William & Martha are living at Fall River, MA. Their ages are given as 32 & 42. With them are three teenagers, surname Valentine, probably Martha's children from a previous marriage: Jefferson B. 17, Jessie B. 17, & Ella C. 13, all b MA; also Eliza Waterhouse, age 64 Maine, probably Martha's mother.

In 1900, William Remington, age 50 (born Feb 1849), is living at New Bedford, MA, with a wife named Minnie J., age 40 (born June 1859). This may be the same William, even though the age is off considerably.

In 1910, William S. Remington, age 60, is living at New Bedford, MA, with a "second" wife, Linette (?name illegible?), b MA, parents b in England. The wife may be Minnie, as above.

He probably is the William S. Remington, age 70 and widowed, living at New Bedford, MA, in the 1920 Federal Census. It says he was born in MA, and both parents were born in RI. However, the age is off considerably.

In the 1900 Federal Census, there is a couple living at VT, which looks like William & Martha, but the birth dates are off: William Remington, b Oct 1834 MA, parents b RI & MA; Martha A. Remington, b Jul 1839 VT, parents b VT. This couple is also in the 1880 census at Craftsbury, Orleans Co., VT, with a daughter named Flora E., age 10; they are living with an older couple named Mulford. In 1910 they are still at Craftsbury, VT. They appear to be William & Martha of New Bedford except for two differences: Martha's birthplace, given in the censuses as VT, but in the marriage record as ME; also, the marriage record has her maiden name as Waterhouse, but in 1880 they are living with the Mulford & Clarisa Eldridg, and Martha is listed as their daughter. (this family needs more research)

See notes for Martha.

869 Archibald was Deacon of the Congregational Church, Bristol, RI. He is listed on the membership list as of 22 May 1785. He was also a private from RI in the Revolutionary War. The RI Cemetery Database records his year of death as 1819, but this may be because of a gravestone that is difficult to read. Munroe, Dr., Deacon Archibald (I12431)

ARNOLD Harriet, only daughter of Samuel G., aged 3 years, 4 months, suddenly, July 20, 1825.

This does not make sense to me because there seems to have been an infant daughter who died the following month, Aug. Perhaps the newspapers got it wrong and one just repeated the other.

886 ARNOLD Jonathan, Esq., at Smithfield, in 90th year, many years a member of the General Assembly. Gazette of Dec. 31, 1796.

ARNOLD Welcome, of Jonathan, of Smithfield, and Patience Greene, of Capt. Samuel, dec., of Warwick, at Warwick, Feb. 11, 1773. (Providence Records)

It appears that Welcome and Patience had two sons; the older one died after the younger one was about 7 months old, so they named the second the same name -- Samuel Greene Arnold. Samuel Greene was the name of Patience's father.
