  According to William Chaffee's history of the Chaffees, Levi was a blacksmith by profession. He was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Rehoboth in the spring of 1751. His father Nathaniel died in 1759, after which his brother Nathaniel was appointed as his guardian. He served in the Colonial Wars as a private under Jabez Snow (1761).
