Notes - According to the book "Records of the Bailey Family," compiled by "A Descendant," Hannah C. (Bailey) Hopkins in 1895, William Bailey probably became a resident of Newport, RI, soon after settlement of the town. Since most of the early records were destroyed or damaged by the British during the Revolution, we can not be sure just when he came. However, there is a record of a transaction in which William Bailey of Newport bought of Gabriel Hicks a certain piece of land bounded partly by the sea. The date on this record is 14 June 1655. The following year, on 5 March 1656, William Bailey, Sr., , along with Gabriel Hicks, sold 21 acres in Newport to Josahua Coggeshall.
Nothing definite has been discovered about his parentage or place of origin, or dates of birth and death. It is known that his death occurred before 20 July 1670.
