Notes - This information on John Tibbits and his son George came from the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 12, Early RI Settlers in Rensselaer County, NY. George was the eldest of 10 children. When he was five his father and family moved to Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA, and in 1780 they moved to the village of Lansingburgh, NY. In 1784 he began his business career, and in 1787 he took his brother, Benjamin, in with him as a partner in G&B Tibbits. George remained a partner in this business until he retired about the year 1804. In 1800 he purchased a large amount of land in the Hoosick Patent; was the mayor of Troy from 1830-1836; was a member of the NY State Assembly in 1800 and 1820, and a State Senator from 1815-1818. The NSDAR Patriot Index of 1966, p. 678 lists Tibbetts, John b. 9-25-1737 d 1-27-1817 m Waite Brown, Pvt MA.
