- In the 1850 Federal Census, William is age 23, living in Warwick, RI, with his parents and siblings. He is a miner. William married in 1851, subsequently went south to Georgia, but presumably returned by the time his first wife Chloe died in 1856. After this he went back to Georgia, where he can be found in later censuses.
In a deed dated 13 Nov 1853 at Warwick, William A. Remington was said to be "of Marietta in the State of Georgia." Henry A. & Sally Ann Remington are also named in this deed.
William was widowed, probably twice. In the 1860 Federal Census, living at Marietta, Cobb Co., GA, in the household of G. T. Northup & family, are the following: W. A. Remington, 33 b. NJ, a carpenter; F. J. Remington, 24 b. NY (next to name it says William -- perhaps meaning his wife?); and Ella Remington, 1 b. GA. This is almost certainly William Aborn Remington of RI (see census data for 1870).
In the 1870 Federal Census, there is a William A. Remington, age 42, b. RI, living at Cartersville, Bartow, GA. This is the correct age for William Aborn Remington. Also in the home are Ellen L. Remington, 11; William H. Remington, 9; and George T. Remington, 5; these three children were all born in Georgia. He has no wife in the home, so it is reasonable to assume that his wife, mother of these children, has died. They are living next to or near to Simeon & Hester Smith and family.
In the 1880 Federal Census, William & Mary (assumed third wife) and their family are residing at 3rd Ward, District 13, Athens, Clarke Co., GA; W. A. Remington is 50, Mary E. is 36, Earnest W. is 7, and Lola G. is 5.
It is possible that William had another daughter named Marietta, because back in RI, the 1870 Federal Census lists a Marrietta Remington, age 14, b. GA (c1856), living in Providence with William's parents, Henry & Sally Remington. She could be the daughter of Chloe, because they must have gone to Georgia and then back to Massachusetts, where Chloe's death is in the Rehoboth, MA, vital records. This is one possible scenario. (see above note concerning deed dated 13 Nov 1853)
However, the RI Death Index lists a daughter of William & Chloe who would have been born c1856 -- Carrie C. Remington, who died 31 Mar 1876. The name Carrie does not sound at all like Marietta, so it is not certain that they are the same individual -- unless she was called by very different names at times.
From the web site newenglandancestors.org -- see "Rehoboth, MA, vital records": "1851 REMINGTON, William A., aged 23, of Providence, son of H. A. and Sally A., and Chloe Carpenter, aged 20, of Rehoboth, daughter of Asaph and Caroline, married by Rev. Charles P. Grosvenor June 8, 1851. Int. June 8, 1851. 8 6 Marriage." (This is very likely the first marriage for this particular William.)
