Notes |
- Probably this was the Sylvester Northup who moved to Exeter from North Kingstown, and was mentioned in the Exeter Town Council records on 12 Jan 1754, being summoned to appear at the next meeting to account for his residence in town. At the next meeting he was accepted as a resident of Exeter, on 12 Feb 1754. This signifies that he must have had some means of livlihood, or else he would have been sent back to North Kingstown.
He may have been a son of Joseph Northup, c1665 - 1726, who married Hopestill Smith; or he may be a son of Henry Northup, who was born c1688 - 1741-59. This Henry may have married Mary Eldred and/or Hopestill (Smith) Northup, widow of Joseph.
The names of Sylvester's children were obtained from genealogy notes belonging to Adeline King, but need research to confirm.
I have not been able to find any definitive data on this family, other than my notes above. It has been suggested that Sylvester II may have been orphaned or for some other reason raised by relatives, possibly Gideon & Avis Northup.
