    • In the 1871 census, he is probably the Gilbert Slack age 21 b. Mansfield, who is in the 7th dragoons at Walmer, Kent, England.

      He may also be the Gilbert Slack age 29 b. Mansfield who is lodging at Radford in 1881; occupation frame work knitter.

      In the 1891 census this family is living at 23 Rookery, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Gilbert & Hannah have four children. He is a hosiery factory hand.

      In 1901 they are at 17 Mount Pleasant, and have three more children. Gilbert is a self-employed window cleaner. (Ancestry has the family incorrectly indexed under the name Stack.)

      The two sons John & Gilbert may very will be the two by those names who arrived in America (Ellis Island) on 17 Apr 1907 on the ship Oceanic from Liverpool. They were from Mansfield; John was 24 and Gilbert was 22. I haven't been able to locate either of them in any US census.
