3551 | In the 1860 Census, Gideon is age 38, and living at Tiverton, RI, with his wife Susan and children Sophy 6, Otis 3, and Matteson 18 (possibly from a first marriage, or a nephew?). Susan may be his second wife (needs more research). | Manchester, Gideon (I03139)

According to the death record at Bristol, RI, Laura Anne Chafee died at age 67 y 7 m 4 d. She died at 19 Constitution St. The gravestone has her birth year as 1844. They have two children: Charles & Mary. Nancy may be a nickname for Eliza. In 1910 Mable is married and her husband is also in the home. The following notes are from "Industries and Wealth of the Principal Points in Rhode Island," NY: A. F. Parsons Publishing Co., 1892, p. 89: "Remington & Henthorn, Consulting and Mechanical Engineers, and Solicitors of Patents, No. 146 Westminster Street. In the domain of the arts and sciences there is, perhaps, no distinct sphere in which such notable progress has been made during the past quarter of a century, as in engineering. And these remarks apply equally to the civil and mechanical branches of the profession. The advance in steam and naval engineering, too, of late years, has been steady and marked, and is especially worthy of note. A Providence firm, sustaining a high reputation for skill and reliability in the line indicated, is that of Remington & Henthorn, whose office is at No. 146 Westminster Street. They rank among the leading consulting and mechanical engineers in New England, and are widely and favorably known. They have long been at the head of their profession, and receive a substantial measure of recognition. Messrs. Remington & Henthorn give particular attention to the designing and erection of electric-light plants, factories, big manufacturing concerns, and also do a large amount of naval work, yacht and pleasure craft being a specialty. Mr. Geo. H. REMINGTON, the senior member of the firm, is a gentleman of middle-age, and a native of Coventry, R.I.; and Mr. John T. Henthorn, his partner, who is also a man in the meridian of life, was born in Massachusetts. They are both thoroughly experienced and expert engineers, master of their art in all its branches, and are prominent members of the Mechanical Engineers' Society of America, and the Civil Engineers' Society of America. Messrs. Remington & Henthorn were each established on his own account for some fifteen years, and in 1885 formed the present copartnership. They occupy a commodious, and a well-appointed office, connected by telephone and employ a very efficient staff, including competent draughtsmen and skilled mechanics. The firm, who are agents for the Reynolds-Corliss Engine, are prepared to engage in all classes of work in the above indicated, furnishing designs, specifications, etc., at short notice. Special attention is given to consulations, while construction is personally supervised, and all work undertaken by this well-known and responsible firm is certain to be performed in the most careful, skilful and trustworthy manner. In addition to the foregoing, these gentlemen have established an enviable reputation as solicitors of patents, including Canadian and foreign countries." | Remington, George Henry (I16259)
|
3587 | In the 1860 Federal Census, George is age 10 and living with his grandparents in Meriden, New Haven Co., CT. In 1880 he appears to be the George Remington living in Meriden next to Henry E. Remington, most likely his uncle. The census data says his father was born in RI and his mother in CT. The 1860 Federal Census shows George living with both Hiram Remington and Oliver & Vincy. So, either there are two Georges about the same age, or -- the same George was counted twice in the census. | Remington, George H. (I16725)

In the 1870 Federal Census, Frank is listed as Frank Wilder, 12, and is living in Randolph, PA, with his mother and stepfather, Sylvester Wilder. In 1880 Frank Lippitt is living at Meadville, Crawford Co., PA. He is age 23, and is among a group of students boarding at North Main St., listed beneath the name of William Scott, Attorney at Law. These students range from age 15 to 29. According to Richard Brownell, a Lippitt descendant, Frank F. Lippitt b c1858 married first to Addie Guy, who died in 1897. Frank married second to Mrs. Rose Garver in 1899. In the 1910 Federal Census, F. F. & Rose Lippitt are ages 52 & 49. With them are children Sarah & Clarence. Next door is son Horace and his family. In the 1920 Federal Census, Horace & Edith are living at 172 Adelaide Ave., Providence, RI. His occupation is given as "gold refiner." | Remington, Horace H. (I08918)
|
3597 | In the 1860 Federal Census, J. H. & Avaline Hadley are living in Sacramento Co., CA, with their three oldest children: Aurora, Elmore (Elmer), & Avaline (Evaline). Elmer was probably named after Evaline's brother. Jesse & Evaline probably went to California because of the great Gold Rush, as her father Virgilious had done. However, since they were married in California, the question remains as to why Evaline made the journey as a single teenager, leaving her mother and young siblings. Was she going to "keep house" for her Dad? In the 1880 Federal Census, the family is living at Silver Creek, Marion Co., OR, a few doors down from Eveline's brother F. M. Remington, and near her brother Elmer Remington, and their families. Other Remington family members are also in Oregon at this time. Jesse & Eveline's family group at this time includes their seven youngest children. Later census data indicates that they may have had another child who died young, for a total of eleven. Notes in quotation marks are from Marcia Farina's excellent family web site, "Deep Roots in Hancock, Co., Illinois": "A second great-granddaughter of Jesse and Evaline, Anna Hadley, advises that she has a handwritten family history dictated by Evaline Remington Hadley shortly before her death in April of 1927. That history gives June 15, 1829, as Jesse's birth date, but his sister, Marinda, was born on September 22, 1829. Cumulative census listings and information recorded at the time of Jesse's death (his age was said to be 73), tend to indicate that he was born in 1827." (My note -- censuses I have consulted show his estimated year of birth to be c1828 or 1829. He could have been born either year, even in 1829 if he was a twin, one of which had a later birth. However, I am using Marcia's suggested date for continuity of data.) "Jesse and Evaline are named as Early Oregon Pioneers; they are said to have arrived in Silverton, Marion County, Oregon, in 1865. In 1866, there is a record of Jesse selling a parcel of land in Sacramento, California, in Township 010N, Range 007E, Section 20." | Hadley, Jesse Herschel (I14807)

3598 | In the 1860 Federal Census, Jacob & Harriet are living with their two daughters in Ward 6, Providence, RI. Jacob was a Private in the Union Army, 4th Rhode Island Regiment, Co. B (infantry). He died in the Battle of Antietam, considered the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. September 1862 -- Antietam: On September 17, Confederate forces under General Lee were caught by General McClellan near Sharpsburg, Maryland. This battle proved to be the bloodiest day of the war; 2,108 Union soldiers were killed and 9,549 wounded -- 2,700 Confederates were killed and 9,029 wounded. The battle had no clear winner, but because General Lee withdrew to Virginia, McClellan was considered the victor. The battle convinced the British and French -- who were contemplating official recognition of the Confederacy -- to reserve action, and gave Lincoln the opportunity to announce his Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation (September 22), which would free all slaves in areas rebelling against the United States, effective January 1, 1863. 3600 | In the 1860 Federal Census, Jerome & Sarah are living in Washington, Wyoming Co., PA. They have a young son, George E., and are living next door to Jerome's parents, George & Eunice. In 1870, the family is still in Washington, PA, next door to Jerome's parents. They have five children. In 1880, Jerome & Sally are still in the same town. Their five children are there, plus another girl named Mary F____ , age 18 (foster daughter?). Also with them is Jerome's mother, age 72. In 1900 Jerome & Sallie are ages 73 & 64. They are living at Tunkhannock, Wyoming Co., PA. With them is Mary Flumenfelt (?), age 37 PA, single, their daughter (see 1880 census also). She must be adopted because it says her father was born in NJ, her mother in PA. I have a photograph of Ida, Nora, Huldah, & Annie Remington taken about 1874, and given to me by Betty Malesky. They are pictured with their cousin Bertie Carr. | Remington, Jerome (I15157)
