801 Andrew married two sisters. See marriage notes for Andrew & Cynthia. Dennis, Andrew (I12256)

802 Andrew was "of Lisbon, CT."

I had Andrew's middle initial as C; his middle name as Clark came to me on a family tree from Genevieve Walsh Shippy.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Andrew C. and Cynthia C. Burnham, ages 33 CT and 31 RI, are living at Lisbon, New London Co., CT. They have two sons: Thomas B. 7 CT and Henry H. 5 RI. Three other individuals are in the household: Maria E. Burlingame 21 RI, Samuel Blanchard 51 RI, and Joseph Kazer (?) 30 Germany. They are living with or next to Bishop and Elizabeth H. Burnham, ages 67 CT and 55 CT; they are Andrew's parents. Several family trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect have them as Andrew's parents, with Elizabeth identified as Elizabeth H. Clark. Also, Bishop & Elizabeth Burnham are buried in the same cemetery as Andrew and Cynthia: Read & Herskell Cemetery, Lisbon, CT. Lastly, as further confirmation, Andrew and Cynthia named a son Thomas Bishop, after both of their fathers.
Burnham, Andrew Clark (I04443)

803 Andrew was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

Potter, Colonel Andrew (I24951)

804 Andrew was of Warwick, RI. The surname is sometimes spelled Edmonds.

I have made an assumption that the Andrew Edmonds who married Freelove Fenner is the same individual as Andrew Edmunds, s/o Joseph.
Edmunds, Andrew (I14586)

805 Ane Kirstine married Soren Sorensen after his first wife died, while his children were still very young. She already had a daughter Marie, who of course became a step-sister to the others, and was known to the next generation as "Tante Marie."

Ane Kirstine had worked for a family for 15-18 years, but the couple and their son died of tuberculosis. The husband in the family had been a manager in a factory where Soren worked, and there Soren met Ane Kirstine, and eventually married her.

In later life, as a widow, Ane Kirstine lived as a tenant at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Marie & Marinus Andersen, in Aabyhoj, Skotojoforretning.

824 Anna's gravestone is difficult to read, as there is a large crack across the writing. It looks as if she died in May 1861 (?) at the age of 88. Cook, Anna (I03119)

825 Anna's surname was given to me by Beryl Meehan.

It may be that Anna died while giving birth to twins Alex & Eber.

840 Another genealogy says Elizabeth was born in July 1778, and married Caleb Booth 17 Dec 1800. Also, that genealogy says she had a son, Richard Coleman, abt Dec 1797. This needs more research. Coleman, Elizabeth (I13469)

841 Anthony & Amey were married by Benjamin Whipple, Justice. Amey was the widow of William Remington when she married Anthony, who was "of Woodstock, CT." Family F04238

843 Anthony & Wealtha migrated from Ohio to Pike Co., Illinois, in 1835 (according to Wealtha's obituary). They stayed there, on the upland between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, for fifteen years. In 1850 they settled in Stark Co., Illinois. For one year they lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, but then they returned to Illinois.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Anthony & Weltha are living in Stark Co., IL, with their 8 children. In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is living at Clover, Henry Co., IL, with six children.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Ant & Wealthy A. Remington, ages 62 & 59, are living at Essex, Stark Co., IL. With them are Hervey 26, Adaline 19, & Jeannette 14. Next door is son Alpheus and family.

In 1880, Anthony & Wealthy A. Remington at West Jersey, Stark Co., IL, with their daughter Sarah Ham, her husband John, and their five children. Also in the household is a niece, Wealthy A. Remington, age 19. However, it seems to me that she must be the daughter of Alpheus, meaning that she is really Sarah's niece.

According to Wealtha's obituary, she and Anthony had 15 children.
Remington, Anthony Rice (I06448)

844 Anthony is referred to as Capt. Anthony Shaw in some of the town council records of Exeter. He is given several responsibilities, such as helping to mend highways as a member of the various "highway squadrons." He also was told to transport some people who had smallpox, and his name was put into the jury box at least once.

Anthony Shaw is in the 1790 census at Exeter. His gravestone in Exeter says he was "late of Newport" and died in 68th year of his age.

Apparently Anthony died shortly after his marriage to Anna Dyer. From Exeter Town Council Records (2), 1771-1794, ed. Linda L. Mathew, RI Roots Gleanings publication: "6 May 1793, Anna Shaw, widow of Anthony Shaw, late of Exeter, deceased, refused to take adminstration on the personal estate of her husband and the next of kin of lawful age, Stephen Shaw, was absent . . . Stephen Shaw later appeared, refused administration, and approved of what had been done." James Clarke was appointed adminstrator.

"17 June 1793, Anthony Shaw of Stephentown in the County of Rensoler (Rensselaer), New York, was appointed guardian of his brother Arnold Shaw, son of Anthony Shaw, late of Exeter, deceased, on his complying with the law and giving bond in the amount of 100 pounds . . . Benjamin and William Shaw, sons of Anthony Shaw, deceased, appeared in council and chose Matthew Clarke of Exeter to be their guardian. The council agreed and also appointed him guardian to Anthony Shaw's son John."

"26 Oct 1793, at the house of the heirs of Anthony Shaw; Anthony Shaw of Stephentown, in Rensoler (Rensselaer) County, New York, guardian of Arnold Shaw, an infant son of Anthony Shaw, late of Exeter, deceased, appeared in council and resigned the guardianship. In his place the council appointed John Shaw of Newport, who was to comply with the law and post bond in the amount of 100 pounds . . . The petition of Susannah Church of Exeter, Sisson "Nicholds" of Stephentown and his wife Marcy, Stephen Shaw of Providence, yeoman, Sarah Shaw of Exeter, singlewoman, Benjamin Shaw, William Shaw, John Shaw, and Arnold Shaw, all of Exeter, infants under 21 years of age by their guardian Matthew Clarke, which recommended that Matthew Clarke be fully authorized, was approved by the council."

According to these lists of heirs, Anthony had these heirs or children still living after his death: Anthony, Stephen, Susannah (Church), Sisson Nichols (husband of Marcy), Ssrah, Benjamin, William, John, and Arnold.
Shaw III, Anthony (I29337)

845 Anthony is reported to have been a twin; a sister Content Shaw may have been his twin. I have not been able to confirm this.

Anthony's second wife Dinah was his first wife's niece. Dinah was born the year Anthony and Susannah married, and the story has come down in the family that Anthony made a cradle for Dinah when she was a baby.

" . . . 17 day of June 1793 Anthony Shaw of Stephentown in the County of Rensselaer in the State of New York, Yeoman, son of Anthony Shaw late of Exeter, deceased, who was appointed guardian to Arnold Shaw son of Anthony Shaw late of Exeter, deceased . . . " (Exeter is in the State of Rhode Island.) Susannah Remington Shaw was still alive when Anthony got custody of his half brother. He had custody only a short time and relinquished it to a half-brother John Shaw.

Anthony served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the 4th Regiment of the Albany County Militia under Col. ir Capt. Robert Killian Van Rensselaer and Lt. Jonathan Niles, under Brig. Gen. Abraham Ten Broeck.

According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect (source Kenneth Linwood Shaw, III), Anthony died "of Cholera Morbus," aged 71 years old.

His will mentions his wife Dinah as well as 11 sons, 6 daughters, and one stepdaughter (Sarah Solomon). Those in his will are "beloved wife Dinah"; sons Peter, John, Russell, Justus, Anthony Jr., Asa, George S., Remington, Sisson N., Benjamin, and Phineas K.; daughters Rebekkah and Susannah, single women; Sarah Solomon (wife's daughter); Abigail Thomas; Mercy, Roxana, and Mary Shaw.

It has been written that he fathered 22 children (see findagrave.com for details on his life and family).
Shaw, Anthony IV (I04746)

846 Anthony served in the Revolutionary War. His pension claim is #W4791, viewable at NARA on microfilm. I have viewed this file twice. It says he lived in Warwick, RI, where he enlisted in August 1776. He served as a marine (mariner) in Captain Duvall's company, on board the ship Providence, under Captain Abraham Whipple. He later served under Captain Rice until 1781. (see further notes below on military service)

In August 1818 Anthony was residing in Tolland, Hampden County, MA. He appears there in the 1820 & 1830 Federal Censuses. In the fall of 1833 he moved to Ohio, where his daughter Fanny and her husband William P. Barnes had located. In the 1830 census, an Anthony Remington is at Howland, Trumbull Co., OH. Might he have been visiting at that time? His son Virgilius is at Fowler, OH, that year.

The file notes that Anthony died "8-10-30 Nov 1833 in Freedom, Portage County, Ohio." It also states that he was married to Hannah sometime in the winter of 1781/82, probably March, in Westerly, RI. Her year of birth is given as 1762, but no surname is noted; she died 1 Aug 1842 at Fowler, Trumbull County, Ohio.

According to the pension file, in 1820 he stated the names of his children as: Mercy 22, Joseph W. 17, Anthony Rice 13, Lyman I. or J. 6, and Emeline M 3. I do not know where all of his children were born -- RI or MA.

A copy of a Bible record has the following: Rhoda 8 Oct 1782; Josiah 22 Sept 1784; Fannah, Fanny, or Frances 17 Aug 1786, m. 1809 to Wm. P. Barnes, b. in Granville (Tolland), MA; Charles 27 June 1788; Huldah 21 Feb 1791; Hannah 29 Jan 1793; Sally 4 Dec 1796; Mercy 28 Jul 1798; Lyman 28 Mar 1800; Virgilious 6 June 1805; Anthony Rice 7 Nov 1807.

Anthony & Hannah (Otter) Remington moved to Fowler, Ohio, to live with daughter Fannie Barnes, where Anthony died one week after arriving (Nov 11, 1833).

The following note is from Karen Hermann:
"The land records for Josiah Remington place him in Tolland, MA, in Oct 1833 and in Freedom, OH, in June 1834; since his father Anthony died in Freedom on 31 Nov 1833, according to the Anthony's pension record, I believe Josiah was the one who brought him to Ohio. He stated in an affidavit in 1823 that Josiah was his only means of support."

Here is an interesting web site done by one of his descendants: http://www.scuttlebuttsmallchow.com/prov.html

From another site:
"Anthony Remington, from Warwick, Rhode Island: Enlisted as a Marine in late August 1776 aboard the frigate Providence, which laid in Providence Harbor at the time, under Capt. Duval, Captain of Marines; and John Channing, 1st Lt of Marines. Term of enlistment: 12 months. Providence was commanded by Commodore Abraham Whipple. Honorably discharged twelve months later while the "Providence" lay in Providence River. Discharge signed by Commodore Abraham Whipple. After leaving the Marine Corps, his health impaired, Remington served every year in the local militia (Pawtuxet Rangers, of which he was a founding member) until 1781, and also as a coast watcher for the Navy. He endured ill health and poverty for the rest of his life, alleviated in part by pensions awarded for his military service. Remington's great-great-great grandson, Alpheus Appenheimer, served with the Marines in France in 1918. His great-great-great-great-great grandson, Mitchell B. Young, served with the Marines in Vietnam."

847 Anthony Shaw married Susanna Remington on 13 Oct 1771 at Trinity Church, Newport, RI. I am making an assumption that the bride was the daughter of this family, because the dates seem to fit, and I have found no record of another Susanna(h) Remington in this time period. Family F01777

848 Anthony was "of Woodstock, CT." Detray, Anthony (I10741)

849 Anthony's will mentions his deceased father, "Arates" or "Aretes"; his still living mother, Huldah Sweetland; brothers Nathan I. (dec'd.), James (dec'd.), Samuel, & Lemual; and sisters Charlotte (Gordon), Celinda, & Roba R.; and his wife Mary. Sweetland, Anthony (I14997)

850 Apparently Abigail was married when very young to Richard Ussell, but this marriage was declared unlawful by the Assembly, because she said her mother and stepfather, John Cowdall, had forced it on her. In 1656 she testified that her own choice was Edward Richmond. (see "Family Notes" at the Knight Memorial Library in Providence, RI; now at Providence Central Public Library)

The following is from Daniel P. Himes' genealogy at Geni.com:

"On May 20, 1657, Abigail Davis petitioned the Assembly alleging that her step-father John Cowdall and her mother had forced her into a marriage with Richard Ussell, and later in the same year the Assembly declared that the marriage was unlawful and that she was free to marry Edward Richmond, whom she declared in her petition to be her choice. When old Portsmouth was divided and Newport organized, Portsmouth was reorganized, and James Davice (Davis) signed (by his mark), April 30, 1639, forming 'the body politick' of Portsmouth: and in the list of the inhabitants of Acquednic Island (who had become such by consent of the goverment), dated September 1, 1640, James Davis's name appears; it does not appear again, and as there were no other of the name (save, possibly, Nicholas, who lived till 1671), it would seem that he was the father of Abigail Davis, and at the time Abigail married Edward Richmond, he had died and his widow had married John Cowdall.

"In one copy of "The Richmond Family" her father's name of James Davis was crossed out and the name 'William Davis' was handwritten in.

"Abigail Davis, the first wife of Edward Richmond . . went to court in 1657 to annul her forced marriage to Richard Ussell. The court committee, headed by Roger Williams, finally decided in her favor, but only after delaying the decision for six weeks due to the great disturbance made by the bystanders. The following summer (1658) Abigail and Edward were charged with living together contrary by law, and having a child (Abigail, born 1656) out of wedlock. They were fined and then conveniently declared to be married by the court 'as they been twice published according to law but . . . (Rev.) Obediah Holmes forbade it'.

"The Richmond Genealogy suggests that the father of Abigail Davis was James Davis of Portsmouth, but there was a William Davis, locksmith, of Boston, who died in 1643/4, leaving a widow, Mary, and a daughter, Abigail. The widow married John Cowdall and the family relocated to Portsmouth, RI."

"Ordered, that Mr. Richard Tew, Mr. John Greene, Jr., of Warwicke, Mr. Thomas Harris, of Providence, and Edward Greenman, of Newport, are apoynted a sub-committee to goe to Abigail, daughter-in-law to Mr. John Cowdall, and to carrie the petition that was presented to the court in her name, and to enquire of her if she owne it to be hers, and to informe themselves of other circumstances from her thereabout, and to make report thereof to the Court to-morrow morninge, at the meetinge of the Court.

"Upon a petition of richard Ussell, to this court for justice concerninge an execution graunted to him against Edward Richmond, or Newport, for the sum of three pound, thirteen shillings; which execution beinge unserved by reason that noe estate was found to serve it on, and now beinge adjitated in the Court for redress in the same, here appeared John Richmond, of Newport, Sen'r, and to the Court doth agree to pay the sayd sum mentioned in the execution to Richard Ussell or his assigns, before the 24th of June next, upon the penalty of a double bond forfeiture, payable to the sayd Ussell, recoverable by law.

"Concerninge the nihil dicit entered against Richard Ussell and John Cowdall, of Newport, by Edward Richmond, before the court of tryalls in October last, at Portsmouth, some difficulty arisinge in the Courts aboute it, and they referringe it to this Court to consider; the Court declareth that the Jury shall enquire of the damages upon the sayd nihil dicit, and judgment and execution shall be entered and graunted at the General Court of Tryalls a Warwicke in June next, in that case. . .

"The Report of the sub-committee yesterday chosen and sent to Abigall, daughter of John Cowdall is, that haveinge read the petition to the sayd Abigall, which was subscribed Abigall Davis, she owned the sayd petition to be her act, and likewise disclaimed Richard Ussell, and only owned Edward Richmond, and further professed that what she had done with respect to Richard Ussell, was for feare of being forced to it by her father and mother.

"Upon adjitation concerninge Richard Ussell and Abigall Davis, the Court declareth theire resolution to consider and debate the matter, as to theire sence concerninge the marridge of the sayd Ussell with the sayd Abigall Davis, whether it were legall or not.

"Upon the great disturbance made by standers by in the beginninge of the adjitation abovesayd, the Court hath for the present deferred the debate of the matter any further. . .

"It is ordered, and by this court declared, that the maridge of Richard Ussell with Abigall Davis was an unlawfull marridge."

"On May 20, 1657, Abigail Davis petitioned the Assembly, alleging that her stepfa. John Cowdall and her mo. had forced her into a m. with Richard Ussell, and later the same year the Assembly declared that the m. was unlawful and that she was free to marry Edward Richmond, whom she declared in her petition to be her choice."
