7251 The will of William Willcox of SK, yeoman advanced in yrs, is dated 27 Feb 1807, proved 8 May 1810. It mentions his late wife Amy; brothers Jeremiah & Robert; sister Sarah Rogers; Sylvester Willcox s/o bro Robert; also Robert Willcox s/o Sylvester and grandson of my bro Robert; Mary & Amy, dtrs of said Sylvester; several other names. Wilcox, William (I26984)

7252 The will of William Wood of Glocester, RI, dated 1 Aug 1761 and proved 20 June 1763, mentions wife Anne; sons Charles under 21, Thomas, Humphrey, and John; and daughters Anne, Mary, and Elizabeth. Wood, William (I20519)

7253 The wills of Mary's father and grandfather appear to state that Mary is the wife of Porter Reynolds. Has Peter been misread for Porter, or vice versa? The 1850 Federal Census clearly reads Peter. (needs more research)

In 1850 "Peter" & Mary Reynolds are living at Greenwich, Washington Co., NY, with their six children, along with several other individuals who may be boarders and/or farm workers.
Reynolds, Porter Hanks (I08968)

7254 The year of William's birth is recorded at Tiverton, but he may not have been born there, as it is recorded along with the birth year of his wife, and the births of all his children. Tiverton VRs record births of 7 children to this couple: Sarah, Ann, Joseph, Thomas, Nathaniel, Demarias, & Jonathan. Earle, William (I03711)

7255 The years of birth and death came from Boyd Scott Remington's chart; the day and month for each came from Rootsweb's Worldconnect (Frank Fisher's family tree). Remington, Grace Jessie Kate (I08769)

7256 Their date of marriage is given as 10 Oct 1883 in "Dictionary of American Biography." Family F01297

7257 Their marriage license, issued in Wells County and dated 1/13/1859, is recorded in Wells County Marriage Record C-P, Page 334.

Family F10413

7258 Their marriage record is found in Warwick Marriages 1850 - 1882, Vol. 1. According to the entry, Peacy was 20 years old, and William was 42. It was his third marriage. Family F00173

7259 Their marriage was published in the "Newport Mercury" 5 April 1796.

William & Mary had at least 7 children. (See "Descendants of Roger Williams" Book I, p. 163; also "Genealogy of Zachariah Rhodes," p. 279.)
Family F00943

7260 Their three children were still living as of 2004. The oldest, Margaret, died in Nov 2004 at the age of 94. Family F00149

7261 Theirs was the second marriage performed by Elder John Gorton (see "Elder John Gorton and the Six Principle Baptist Church of East Greenwich" by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, pub. 2001 by RI Genealogical Society). Family F02117

7262 Theodore Foster was a Congressman. Foster, Theodore (I14562)

7263 Theodosia was most likely named after her maternal grandmother, Theodosia Hopkins.

"Theodocia Remington widow of Daniel Remington, dec" is mentioned in the will of Thomas Holden of Warwick dated 14 Oct 1820.

Several years after Daniel died, she married Jonathan Nichols, widower of her sister Mary.
Wightman, Theodosia (I04780)

7264 There are at least two branches of the Chaffey family who settled in Vermont. The line from Nathaniel Chafee (III) and Susanna Carpenter (his 2nd wife), through their son Benjamin, then Daniel, then George Daniel, spell the surname with one F: CHAFEE. These families are based in the Pittsford, VT, area.

The other Vermont family line, descended from Nathaniel III's son Comfort, by his first wife (Ruth Mansfield), spell the name with two Fs: CHAFFEE. This branch settled in the Berkshire, VT, area.

Comfort is a male given name in the Chaffee family, first seen as the eldest son (b. 1735) of Nathaniel, and subsequently in succeeding generations of his line. It also appears on the family tree as the father of Chloe Pearce, the wife of Stephen Chafee, who was a son of Levi.
Chafee, Nathaniel (I00568)

7265 There are conflicting dates for the death of Mary. Remington, Mary (I08741)

7266 There are indications that William may have married also Jemima Hathaway and/or Susannah (?). SHERMAN, William (I02383)

7267 There are several Adelines on our family tree:
Adeline Tripp (Manchester) Remington (1835 - 1893)
Hannah Adeline G. Remington (1864 - 1942)
Adeline G. Turner (1887 - 1962)
Adeline G. Randall (1906 - 2003)
Adeline G. Randall (1909 - 1984)
Adeline G. Freelove (1944 - )
Curry, Adeline Faith (I26223)

7268 There are several William Earles living at the same time, so it is difficult to determine if this marriage pertains to this particular individual. However, the marriage record says he is William Earle of Portsmouth, and she is Sarah Chase of Freetown (MA); so I am making an assumption that it belongs here. Earle, William (I27723)

7269 There are so many Philip Arnolds and I don't know for sure if I have the correct spouses with the correct Philip Arnolds. The Arnold families need more research to confirm these relationships. See all my noters and sources. Arnold, Philip (I08776)

7270 There are some researchers who think that Moses Barber's second wife was Susanna Wait, not Susanna West. For a discussion of this, see "A Line of Descent From Moses Barber" in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 1, No. 2.

Moses & Susanna had 14 children.
Barber, Moses (I03117)

7271 There are three sons under age 10 in the 1820 census. I don't know the name of this one. In 1830 there are two sons age 15-19, so probably this one died. Rounds, Son (I28833)

7272 There are two birth records for William Hubbard(s) at Dorchester; one 26 Oct 1719 and the other 17 Jan 1720 -- whcih must be 1721 (old-style date). Hubbard, William (I28616)

7273 There are two marriage records for Richard Phillips and Abigail Haskell in New Gloucester, ME. One is dated 16 Nov 1776 and the other is dated 12 Dec 1777. Family F10573

7274 There is a bit of confusion between the census records and the cemetery data. Was there one son George, or two? Possibly the dates on the gravestone were misread. The RI Cemetery Database has the dates for George W. Jenckes as c.1859 - 15 Aug 1859. However, he was clearly born in 1850, as he is in the census that year as four months old. So, either he really died in August 1850, or there was a second son George, and both died young. Jenckes, George W. (I13694)

7275 There is a Clark Hall age 26 living at Lorrain, NY, in 1850. I feel that his name must have some connection to Clark H. Remington. Perhaps they share a common ancestor.

In 1840 he is C. H. Remington, living near Jonathan Remington at Lorraine.

C. H. Remington and family are at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY, in 1840. Also there is Johnathan Remington.
Remington, Clark Hall (I09643)

7276 There is a death record at Seekonk for "Joseph Munro, son of Joseph," who died in May 1863 at age 78. I am making an assumption that it was this particular Joseph. Munroe, Joseph Jr. (I16531)

7277 There is a discrepancy in the dates I have been given. One genealogy says Oscar drowned in Otter Creek 28 Apr 1878. However, another says he was married 29 Dec 1878. Obviously, at least one of these is incorrect. Remington, Oscar E. (I16448)

7278 There is a Stephan Remington, b.c. 1796 RI, living at Fall River, MA, on the 1880 Federal Census. Is that this individual? Very possibly. In the RI Cemetery Database, there is a Stephen S. Remington c.1794 - 23 Nov 1812, buried at the Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Yard. Were there three different Stephen Remingtons born around the same time in RI? Remington, Stephen (I08848)

7279 There is an Amos Remington in the 1790 Federal Census at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT: 3 FWM<16, 1 FWM>16, 4 FWF. This implies that there were three sons and three daughters in the household.

He may be the Amos Remington who married Julette Tower (both of Worthington, MA) on 23 Oct 1807 (in VRs of Cummington, MA).

He may also be the Amos Remington (of Chesterfield, MA) who married Sally Pettingill (of Cummington, MA), int. filed at Cummington 11 Nov 1811.

(source: "The Vital Records of Cummington, MA 1762-1900" by William W. Streeter & Daphne H. Morris, p. 148)

According to a family tree at Rootsweb, Julette was born c 1783, which would make her the age to be Amos's daughter. Perhaps Amos had a son named Amos, Jr. (?).
Remington, Amos (2) (I08046)

7280 There is another George W. Sherman buried in the same cemetery, with dates given as 1811 - 1895. I have chosen the c. 1814 date because it agrees with other records. Sherman, George W. (I04820)

7281 There is some uncertainly as to whether Elizabeth was the wife of William, and therefore whether she is the mother of Robert. GRANT, Elizabeth (I01822)

7282 There is some uncertainty as to whether John was from England or Germany. Some family researchers say he came from Great Canford, Dorsetshire, England, arriving at Massachusetts Bay around the time of John Winthrop's arrival in 1630. However, there is a family tradition passed down by some descendants that Henry was from Germany, and came to Boston on a Dutch ship in 1635. For a full discussion of this, see pages 30 - 33 in "The Luther Genealogy." (available at the Swansea, MA, library and elsewhere)

Capt. John Luther's name first appears in the Taunton Purchase of 1637, in which he is listed as one of the 46 purchasers of land in a transaction between Elizabeth Pole's (Poole's) company and Massasoit. Miss Pole was from Dorchester, England. John Luther was assigned 6 shares, consisting of about 9 (or 90) acres in Swansea.

In 1642 John left Swansea and became one of the first settlers of Gloucester. A mariner employed by a Boston merchant, he was killed by Indians on a trading voyage to Delaware Bay.
LUTHER, Captain John (I19677)

7283 There is some very interesting historical information on Joshua at the Graves family web site: http://www.gravesfa.org/gen166.htm Graves, Joshua (I19066)

7284 There is strong speculation that Esther & Mary may have been twins, since the first three children seem to have been born so close together. "Soule descendants have shown a strong genetic trait of twinning." (see "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations" Vol. 3 , George Soule, p. 14)

Jeremiah & Mary had two sets of twins.

Mary Gifford, wife of Jeremiah, is mentioned by name in her father's will of 1723.

Mary died after her son Gideon's will of 14 Apr 1760.
Wright, Mary (I01751)

7285 There is strong speculation that Esther & Mary may have been twins, since the first three children seem to have been born so close together. "Soule descendants have shown a strong genetic trait of twinning." (see "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations" Vol. 3 , George Soule, p. 14) Wright, Esther (I17282)

7286 There is uncertainty as to the identity and birth dates of some of Joseph's children, other than Lydia. Their names have been partially or totally burned off the original records at North Kingstown, so various genealogies show different names. Whitford, Joseph (I01288)

7287 There is uncertainty as to which Ruth Briggs was the wife of Joseph N. Remington. There were two Ruths of the same name, born the same year, both apparently in Rhode Island -- and, it so happens that they were first cousins. However, it seems very possible that Joseph's wife was this one, as she was born in East Greenwich, as Joseph was.

Interestingly, Ruth's birth entry and Joseph's birth entry are on facing pages in the old record book of births in East Greenwich.

So, the birth date and parent data for Joseph's wife are based on an assumption, subject to further research. In any case, the two Ruths have the same grandparents in the Briggs ancestral line. Data on the other Ruth Briggs can also be found on this family tree, since she not only ties into the Briggs line, but also is a descendant of the Bailey family, who are in our own direct ancestry.

Any further information on this marriage is welcomed.
Briggs, Ruth (I07169)

7288 There may also have been an Asa Bates, Jr., b.c.1795, in this family. The 1850 Federal Census shows an Asa Bates, age 55, living in Smithfield, RI, with wife Marietta, age 54. Bates, Asa (I06314)

7289 There may be confusion over whether there is just one Abby in this family. The 1850 Federal Census has Abby 18 (c1832) where "Albert" should be in the birth order. Remington, Albert (I09121)

7290 There may have been an earlier daughter named Sarah Hubbard born 1716 at Dorchester; no specific date given. Hubbard, Sarah (I28666)

7291 There may have been another Hannah Hull born around this time -- needs more research. I am making an assumption that this is the one who married Holder Slocumb. Hull, Hannah (I11168)

7292 There was also a Ruth Fish, daughter of David & Jemima Fish of Portsmouth, who married Samson Shearman in 1761. Samson was a great grandson of Philip shearman, as was Benjamin. Most likely the two Ruths were related, also. Fish, Ruth (I03268)

7293 There were at least two Cornelius Seaburys born in Tiverton around the same time, and they were first cousins. One was born 7 April 1763, a son of Aaron & Abigail (Westgate) Seabury. The other Cornelius was born 2 May 1769, a son of Philip & Sarah Seabury. Based on his estimated date of birth as given in the RI Cemetery Database (1769) and also based on his being named in his grandfather's will (appearing to be among the five sons of Philip, listed together), I have made an assumption that he is a son of Philip & Sarah.

These five sons of Philip & Sarah are also mentioned as grandsons in the will of Marcy Pearce, widow, of Tiverton; here they are identified as sons of Philip Seabury.

This conclusion is confirmed by the marriage record:
SEABURY Cornelius, of Philip and Sarah, and Mary Gray, of Col. Pardon and Mary; m. by Rev. John Briggs, March 16, 1714.

From the RI Cemetery Database:
SEABURY CORNELIUS 1769c - 1 SEP 1854 TV011
SEABURY MARY (GRAY) 1771c - 27 AUG 1847 TV011

There is no other Cornelius listed in the database for the earlier date of birth, which suggests that he may have died young or moved out-of-state.
Seabury, Cornelius (I23226)

7294 There were several John Briggses among the early settlers of MA and RI. This one is known as John Briggs of Kingstowne or Quaker John. Some genealogists have confused these men of the same name.

"John Briggs bought a lot in Westerly in 1661 and later participated in several land transactions in North Kingstown and East Greenwich. The first monthly meeting of The Society of Friends in Greenwich was held at his house and he was named as recording clerk." (source: article by John G. D'Alessandro, found on ancestry.com).

On 12 July 1708, the Town Council of Kingstown granted letters of administration on the estate of John Briggs to his widow and his son John. The records of North Kingstown have been badly burned, but following is a copy of what remains of the probate record of John Briggs. The year is burned off but it is clearly 1708, for the record immediately following is dated (day burned off) Aug 1708:
"The Towne Councell of Kingstowne has this Day gra[ ]ces Brigs widow & Relect to John Brigs of Kingstow[ ]John Brigs of Kingstowne Eldest Son of John Brigs[ ]ministration Joyntly vpon all ye Estate of John Br[ ]sband & your Honoured Father. "John Briggs, immigrant ancestor and founder, was a native of England, whence he emigrated at a date unknown to the American colonies. He is first of record in Kings Town (N. Kingstown) R I, in the year 1671, but in all probability was a resident there long before that date. On 20 May 1671 he became clerk of the military company, at the same time taking the oath of allegiance. On 1 January 1672, he and five others bought of Awashuwett, chief sachem of Quohesett, in Narragansett, a tract of land there. On 11 January 11 following, he purchased fifty-seven acres of Richard Smith for
Briggs, John Jr. (I07228)

7295 There were three sons named William in this family group; two died in infancy. William, Jr. & Mary had six known children. Tilley, William Jr. (I09863)

7296 There's a will for a Matthew Allen of North Kingstown, dated Apr 1759, proved 11 Feb 1760. I don't know if it's for this particular Matthew or not. Allen, Matthew (I25652)

7297 These are Philip's second and third marriages; I haven't yet discovered who Philip's first wife was. The third marriage entry says he was widowed, she was divorced.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Philip R. Johnson is living in Coventy, RI, with his four-year-old son, William R. Johnson.
Johnson, Philip Rhodes (I02242)

7298 These birth records were found in the vault at the Bristol Town Hall, in Vol. 4, p. 249. I have a photocopy.

According to "The Chaffee Genealogy" by William H. Chaffee, p. 276, Stephen & Deborah "were members first of the Episcopal and later of the Methodist Church. November 2, 1814, Stephen Chafee bought land of James Usher in Bristol, where he made his home. He was a country storekeeper and shipper of merchandise, and is said to have been eccentric in manner. He had a light complexion, blue eyes, and was five feet, four inches in height."

James Usher was brother to Deborah.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Stephen & Deborah Chafee are both aged 60, living in Bristol, RI. Son Cyril, aged 20, is with them. They are next door to sons Zechariah & Thomas and their families. In the 1860 Federal Census, Stephen & Deborah Chafee are both aged 70, still living at Bristol, RI.
CHAFEE, Stephen Jr. (I00245)

7299 These dates for George were found at: http://longislandgenealogy.com Havens, George Jr. (I09365)

7300 These dates for Martha are found in "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" ( by Clarence Almon Torrey, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1985). Belcher, Martha (I02862)
