| In the 1800 Federal Census, Shadrack is at Schenectady Ward 4, Albany, NY. In 1810 he is at Halfmoon, Saratoga, NY. | Remington, Shadrach (I08205)
| In the 1810 and 1820 Federal Censuses, John & family are in Tolland, Hampshire County, MA, along with Josiah, Charles, Anthony, & Holden Remington. In the 1830 Federal Census they are in Otis, Berkshire County, MA. In the 1840 and 1850 Federal Censuses, they are in Becket, Berkshire County, MA. In the 1855 MA Census, the family is still at Becket: John Remington 69 RI, farmer; Sarah 70 CT; Amasa A. 34 MA; John O. 27 MA; and June A. 19 NY. | Remington, John (I06372)
| In the 1810 census, Nathaniel is listed as a head of household in North Kingstown, RI. In the 1820 census, Nathaniel is listed again as a head of household in North Kingstown, RI. The household consists of three free white males -- one age 16-18, one age 16-25, and one age 45+ (who I assume is Nathaniel). Also in the same census and same town is George Munday (age 25-44) with a wife and two children under age 10, one male and one female. I found two references to a Nathaniel Munday of North Kingstown as follows. In an estate document for James Church, a letter of Administration was given to Nathaniel Munday, merchant, of NK, dated 7 March 1808; also Nathanial Munday of NK, yeoman, was mentioned in a deed of William Gardner of Exeter, dated 1 Aug 1812. These two documents may refer to the same individual. He died in Wickford 2 January 1827, age 72 (Newport Mercury 6 January 1827 and lost gravestone). "Capt. Nathaniel MUNDAY died Jan 2, 1827 aged 72 years." | Munday, Captain Nathaniel (I28551)
| In the 1813 Rate Book for Mansfield, p. 21, a Joseph Marshall living at Stockwell Gate paid 1/10 - 1/2 (one shilling ten and a half pence). That reference could pertain to this particular Joseph Marshall, our ancestor. In the 1841 census, Joseph & Sarah Marshall, their ages given as 60 & 50, are living on Bancroft Lane in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. In the household are Phoebe 30, Elizabeth 25, James 15, Eliza 15, William 9, & Harriett 4. (In the 1841 census ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.) I have made an assumption that all of the children belong to Joseph & Sarah (needs research to confirm). | MARSHALL, Joseph (I16829)
| In the 1820 & 1830 Federal Censuses, Asa is at West Springfield, Hampden County, MA. The death announcement in the newspaper (The Springfield Republican) says he died at Cabotville. | Remington, Asa (I08163)
| In the 1820 census, the William Lewis household in South Kingstown includes 1 male under age 10, 1 female under age 10, 1 male age 26-44, and one female age 26-44. This suggests that there may have been a son in this family. | Lewis, William (I28004)
| In the 1820 census, Zeno Remington is head of household in Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY. There are 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10, and one female 25-44. The adults are Zeno and Mary; the two boys are likely Orlando (9) and Philander (2), and the girl could be Mary (not sure of her exact age). By 1830 Zeno is not there and assumed to have died. See his wife Mary for notes. I have made an assumption that Theodore is a son in this family, based on a few points: 1) he named a son Zeno; 2) his birth year range and location place him here; and 3) Theodore and Philander are both mentioned in a land assessment as grantees Jan 1849. | Remington, Zeno (I28171)
| In the 1820 Federal Census, the three brothers -- Thomas, Silas, & Alva -- are listed at Henrietta, Monroe Co., NY. Silas went to Wisconsin in the 1840s. In the 1850 Federal Census, Silas & Margaret Remington are living at Genesee, Waukesha Co., WI. There are four children in the household: B. 25, Orthos 22, M. 20, & A. 18 (the last two are females). I have made an assumption that M. is Marcelia, based on her age. His gravestone data says he was born at Rutland, VT. | Remington, Silas (I08376)
| In the 1820 Federal Census, the three brothers -- Thomas, Silas, & Alva -- are listed at Henrietta, Monroe Co., NY. In 1850 and 1860, Thomas & Huldah are still living at Henrietta, Monroe Co., NY. In 1860 he is listed as Thomas N. Remington, so possibly his middle name was Nelson. In 1810, he may be at Rupert, Bennington Co., VT, as is Silas. If so, it appears that there are several children in the family. | Remington, Thomas N. (I08374)
| In the 1830 census, Mary Remington is listed as head of household with four children. Researcher Katie Mills gives the name of only one of these children, Orlan. It appears there were two other sons and one daughter. See my notes below: In 1850, Mary Remington is age 55, living in Brutus with Philander Remington and family. I am assuming he is her son. Also there is Mary E. Remington, 28, apparently single. I am making an assumption she is a daughter. Inscription: "Grandmother" age 82y | Olmsted, Mary Waity (I28173)
| In the 1830 census, there is one daughter under age 5, and one age 10-14, who would have been Mary. | Rounds, Sarah A. (I28769)
| In the 1830 census, William Munday is listed at Troy (Fall River), MA. The household consists of 2 free white males 15-19, 1 free white male 20-29, and 1 free white female 20-29. I suppose this includes William and his wife, but who are the others? In the 1840 census, William Munday and wife appear to be at Fall River, MA. Also listed is George Munday. In 1850 and 1860, William & Eliza are in Fall River, MA. Other individuals with them in 1850 are Mary Durfee, Thomas M. Durfee, and Levica Miller. In 1860 they have a daughter Abby L, age 9; Mary Durfee is still with them, but the age is off. In the 1865 Massachusetts State Census, the family is still at Fall River: William Munday 58 RI, Eliza H. Munday 53 RI, Augustin Munday 19 South America, Abby Munday 14 MA, Mary Durfee 50, and Jane Farrell 30 Ireland. In 1870 William, Eliza, and their daughter (Alice?) are in Boston. Mary Durfee is still with them -- age 54. According to William's death record at Boston (it is also registered in Fall River), he was born in Wickford; no parents are named. He died at age 76 y 7 m. Based on location and census records, I have made an assumption that William is a son of Nathaniel Munday, who is in the 1820 census at NK with two sons. I believe Mary Durfee is ister to Eliza. | Munday, William (I28574)
| In the 1830 Federal Census "Aretus" is shown as residing at Tyringham, Berkshire County, MA. In the 1850 Federal Census, Aretus S. & Susan are living at Abingdon, Luzerne Co., PA, with six of their children: Susan 20, Holden 18, John 15, Aretus 13, Martha 9, and Emerald 3. All of the family members are listed as born in RI, except Susan, the older daughter. According to the 1850 census data, all of these family members were born in RI. Perhaps the census taker assumed too much? In the 1870 US Census, Aratus is living in Dartmouth, MA. Nearby in New Bedford, MA, are four of his sons, including William, and William's son, Jonathan Stedman Remington. His birth is recorded at New Bedford, MA, as 1 June 1804. He was probably named after his uncle by marriage, husband of Huldah. | Remington, Aratus Sweetland (I06330)
| In the 1830 Federal Census, Bela is residing at Hingham, Plymouth County, MA. Steve Condarcure's Genealogy Data (web site) has his date of death as 22 June 1842. | Remington, Bela (I07903)
| In the 1830 Federal Census, both Seneca and Seneca, Jr., are residing at Hinsdale, Berkshire County, MA. Sometime after this, the family must have moved to PA, where his son was born in 1843. He & Hannah are living with their son's family in Kansas in 1880. | Remington, Seneca Jr. (I08349)
| In the 1830 Federal Census, Elisha is residing at Hingham, Plymouth County, MA. | Remington, Elisha III (I07921)
| In the 1830 Federal Census, Phineas is residing at Hingham, Plymouth County, MA. | Remington, Phineas (I07948)
| In the 1830s, Silas and Margaret went with their son Greene, daughter Mercy, and her son Allen, to Clarksville, PA. In the 1850 Federal Census, Silas and Margaret, ages 82 and 80, are living at Abington, Luzerne Co., PA, with Green and Mercy. | Kettelle, Silas (I12098)
| In the 1840 Federal Census, Dexter Remington's household at East Greenwich consists of the following: 1 male 15 < 20 (Thomas), 1 male 30 < 40 (probably Dexter himself), 1 female < 5 (daughter b 1836 -1840), 1 female 10 < 15 (Sarah, age 13), 1 female 30 < 40 (probably Ruth). In the 1850 Federal Census, Dexter & Ruth are living at East Greenwich, RI, where their household also appeared in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. In 1850 the extended family consists of: Warren & Hitty Remington, ages 56 & 47; William Greene, 82 (probably father-in-law); Dexter S. & Ruth Remington, both aged 49; and Henry, 27. I am assuming that Henry is Thomas Henry, mentioned in the will of his grandfather Benedict Remington. | Remington, Dexter S. (I13654)
| In the 1840 Federal Census, Warren and his wife are probably living with his father at East Greenwich. There are an older couple and a younger couple in the household. Warren and his wife are living at East Greenwich, RI, in the 1850 Federal Census. They are together with his brother Dexter's family. Also in the household is William Greene (32 ?), probably Mehitable's brother. Mehitable and Ruth, Dexter's wife, may be sisters. In the 1860 Federal Census, Warren Remmington is age 65, a shoemaker, living at East Greenwich, RI. He is living next to Ruth Remington, age 58, his sister-in-law, along with Almyra Briggs, 48, who is living with Ruth. I have estimated his birth year based on his age in the census, and from his age at death. Warren's will, dated 3 Oct 1867 EG, mentions only William Taplin of East Greenwich and his wife Hannah L. Taplin. There is no indication of any any family relationship. | Remington, Warren (I13658)
| In the 1840 Federal Census, Wm. Waterman is listed at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY. His family includes himself (male 20-30) one female (30-40) -- probably his wife; a male under age 5, another male age 10-15, and possibly an additional male age 30 - 40 (unclear). He is listed near Johnathan Remington, C. H. Remington (probably Clark H.), Hial Hall, Thomas Hall, Varnum Miles, William R. Cox, and others. In the 1850 Federal Census, the family is living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY: William 39, Rachel 39, Althea 8, Finsa (?) 7, and Ellen 5. Other Remington relatives are also living in Jefferson Co., NY, in this census. In 1860 the family is still at Lorraine: W. Waterman 39, Rachel 40, Heresa (?) 17, Ellen 15, Walker 9, & Ida 4. In 1870 the family is at Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., NY: William & Rachel, 59; Wallace 19, Ida 14, & Lydia 22. | Waterman, William (I09628)
| In the 1841 census she is listed as Betty age 2 months. | Andrews, Lizzie (I00092)
| In the 1841 census William & Hannah and the four oldest (living) children were at Hopkin Lane, Hucknall-Under-Huthwaite near Sutton. In 1851 they have six children, including Joseph, our ancestor. In 1861 the family is at Forest Land End, Sutton-in-Ashfield, with the five youngest children. It is noted that Nathan is mentally retarded. In 1871 they are back in Hucknall-Under-Huthwaite and have with them their unmarried son Nathan, whose occupation is given as "moulder"; in 1881 they are at Mansfield Rd., Sutton-in-Ashfield, where Nathan is a "coal miner"; and in 1891 he is simply "unmarried." The three of them are still together, living on Mansfield Rd., Sutton. | COLEMAN, William (I00240)
| In the 1841 census, Edward is living with other members of the Slack family, and it is not clear exactly whose son he is -- either Robert's, or Ann's. | Slack, Edward (I16886)
| In the 1841 census, Elizabeth Allsop is a widow, age 60, living at Hucknall Huthewaite. Her married son Samuel Coleman (Colman) and his family are living with her. | WILSON, Elizabeth (I00644)
| In the 1841 census, Gilbert & Ann Slack are living at 12 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield. Two of their children are in the household: William & John. Also living on the same street are Gilbert's parents, Gilbert & Elizabeth, and three other brothers and their families. In the 1851 census, Gilbert & Ann are at 21 Bancroft Lane; they have four children: William 19, John 11, Sarah 7, & Elizabeth 3 (our ancestor -- maternal grandmother of Edna). Gilbert is a cotton stockinger and Ann is a seamer. Living near them are other Slack family members. Next door is Ann's mother Sarah Marshall, two of Ann's sisters, as well as a niece. In the 1861 census, Gilbert is living at 26 The Lawn, Mansfield. His profession is given as silk stocking maker. His son John, 21, was a cotton stocking maker, while Sarah, 17, was a dressmaker. Elizabeth, at 13, was still a "scholar." Also in the 1861 census is another family that is likely related, living at 38 Club Square: Robert Slack, age 60, cotton stocking FWK; Eliza, his wife, 40; Herbert, 12; Frederick, 6; Gilbert, 4; and Walter, 11 months. I believe the father Robert is the older brother of Gilbert, the father of Elizabeth Slack. In the 1871 census, Gilbert is age 65 and Ann is 64. They are living at 26 Union St., Mansfield. With them are their daughter and son-in-law and infant granddaughter: Joseph & Elizabeth (Slack) Coleman, both 24, and Ann, 6 months (all born Mansfield, Notts). Both Gilbert and his son-in-law Joseph are frame work knitters. Living on the same street are Elizabeth's sister and brother-in-law, John & Sarah Adcock. In 1881 Gilbert is age 75, widowed, living at 30 Union St., Mansfield. With him are John & Sarah Adcock, both age 38. Sarah is Gilbert's daughter. Death at Mansfield: GRO ref June 1889 vol 7b p 52 | SLACK, Gilbert (I00239)
| In the 1841 census, Harriet is living with other members of the Slack family, and it is not clear exactly whose daughter she is -- either Robert's, or Ann's. | Slack, Harriet (I16885)
| In the 1841 census, John & Mary, ages given as 30 for both of them, are at Bancroft Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. They have three children: Ann 4, Martha 2, & John 1. (In the 1841 census ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.) In 1851, John & Mary are both age 38, still living on Bancroft Lane (number 23 or 123). John is a cotton stockinger and Mary is a seamer. They have five children: Ann 14 (twist factory hand), John 10 (scholar), Sarah 7 (seamer), Thomas 5 (scholar), and Edwin 2. In 1861 the family is at 34 Bancroft Lane, next to Joshua & Ann and family. They have seven children. In the 1871 census, John and Mary Slack, both age 59, are living at 34 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield, England. Three of their sons are in the household; Edwin and his wife Lavina (?), Gilbert, & Willie. Other Slack families are nearby on the street: John & Ann, Charles & Mary, Frederick & Mary Ann. In 1881 John & Mary, their ages given as 67, are living at 34 Botany Lane (this must be Bancroft Lane). Gilbert, 29, is with them. Next door at #35 are John & Ann and their two children, Emma & Edward. Also nearby on the same street, #38, are Frederick & Mary Ann and their children; and at #36, Charles & Mary and their children. | Slack, John (I16840)
| In the 1841 census, Robert is living with his parents at 10 Bancroft Lane, Mansfield. It appears that five of his children are in the household, along with a possible wife, Ann -- however, further research suggests that Ann is his sister and that one of the children, Charles, is an infant belonging to Ann. By 1861 he has remarried and has a wife named Eliza, plus four more children. They are living at 38 Club Square, Mansfield. | Slack, Robert (I16835)
| In the 1841 census, Samuel & Mary were in Hucknall-Under-Huthwaite with their three oldest children, and also living with them was Sam's widowed mother, Elizabeth (Wilson) (Coleman) Allsop. In 1851 they are still there, with Mrs. Allsop, their three children, and a 1-year-old named Mary. Also in the household is Ellen Greaves, age 19, "daughter-in-law." She may be a daughter Mary had before she married Samuel. If so, why wasn't she with them in 1841? Is the baby hers, or Mary's? In 1881, at Sampsons Yard, Hucknall Under Huthwaite, Samuel & Hannah have no more of their own children living with them, but have two grandsons -- Abraham and Samuel Berrisford, 9 and 6. Also in the household is William Greaves age 86, Mary's father. | Coleman, Samuel (I06521)
| In the 1850 & 1860 censuses, Rebecca Allen is ages 73/82 and living at Westport, MA, with her married daughter Sarah Akin/Aiken and family. | Unknown, Rebecca (I18445)
| In the 1850 & 1860 Federal Censuses, Anselm & Susan S. Parsons are living at Becket, Berkshire Co., MA. By 1860 they have 8 children. In 1870 the family is living at Peru, Clinton Co., NY. Five of their children are in the household. | Parsons, Anselm (I18617)
| In the 1850 and 1860 Federal Censuses, the family is living at Scituate, RI. I have estimated the children's birth years based on their ages in the 1850 census. | Tourtellot, Williams (I21928)
| In the 1850 and 1870 Federal Censuses, Amanezer is with his first wife Olive at Tiverton. By the 1880 census he is with his third wife, Mary, and her stepdaughter Minnie. | Durfee, Amanezer James (I09394)
| In the 1850 and 1870 Federal Censuses, Stephen & Maria and family are residing at Woodstock, Windham Co., CT. In 1880, he is still at Woodstock, but Maria is no longer there; in the household with Stephen, age 78, are Millard 30, Marion 29 (wife of Millard), Addie 28, and Mary A. 26. Living with them is a young man working as a laborer, John Andrews, born in England. | Hopkins, Stephen Green (I12188)
| In the 1850 census and in the marriage record she is Ella; elsewhere she is Ellen. | Peirce, Ella M. (I05744)
| In the 1850 census Eleanor was two months old. According to her birth record, she was born on Dartmouth St. In the 1880 Federal Census at New Bedford, she is listed as Ella H. Remington, age 28, at home (with mother and sister Lucy). Eleanor died at age 43 of bronchitis and tuberculosis. she was single. I believe she is the one who sent the list of Alice (Grinnell) Remington's 14 children to the relatives in Michigan. I have a copy of that list. | Remington, Eleanor H. "Ella" (I06500)
| In the 1850 census Nathan is living with his family at Tiverton, RI. In the 1860 census, he is living at Little Compton with the Dyer family. In 1900 he is boarding with the George A. Green family at Tiverton, RI. In 1920 it appears that he is the Nathan Remington, aged 73 RI, single and living in the New Bedford city almshouse. It does not state whether he has any handicap, although it says he can read and write. | Remington, Nathan (I05882)
| In the 1850 census she appears to be Maryette or Mozette. | Parshall, Etta E. (I18608)
| In the 1850 census she is Elitia A. (sp? -- or Elilta, Elitta, Eletia); in 1860 she is Lydia; in 1870 she is Lida A.; in 1880 she is Lida King, 64, an aunt (widowed) living with Henry N. & Hattie Johnson at Ellisburgh, NY. | Unknown, Elitia "Lydia" (I22154)
| In the 1850 census she is Francelia A.; in 1860 she is F. R.; in 1870 she is Celia. | Wightman, Francelia A. (I23496)
| In the 1850 census she is Harriet E., age 2; In the 1860 and 1870 censuses she is listed as Lydia (12 & 22); in 1880 she is Lizzie. It is possible her nickname was Liddie and the census taker in 1880 heard it incorrectly. Her mother's name was either Lydia, Lida A., Elitia, or Elidia; so perhaps Harriet's middle name was the same as her mother's. | King, Harriet E. "Lydia" (I22151)
| In the 1850 census she is Persis Remington, 15; in the 1860 census she is Persis W. Williams, 24. According to a posting on the Rootsweb Remington message board (22 Aug 2008), her middle name is Uretta. In the 1870 census, her name appears as Persis U. or V. Williams; in 1880 and 1900 she is listed as Perseus U. The 1880 census data says both of her parents were born in RI, but I don't think that is correct. | Remington, Persis Uretta (I10082)
| In the 1850 census, Almeida Armstrong is age 40, living at Newport, RI. She is living with the family of Alfred & Ann Maria Smith. | Armstrong, Almeda (I10963)
| In the 1850 census, Alonzo is age 4 months. In 1880, Alonzo & Mary Ann Remington are living at Bennington, Bennington Co., VT. They have two daughters, Carrie 4, & Eliza 2. They are living near Milo G. Remington and his family. In 1900, Alonzo Remington is a widower, age 50, still living at Bennington, VT. With him are three daughters: Carrie 22, Lizzie 21, & Charlotte. They are living adjacent to the families of Milo, Frank, & George Remington. In the 1896-97 directory of Bennington, VT, Alonzo N. Remington is listed as a blacksmith, boarding at 114 Jeffeson Ave. | Remington, Alonzo N. (I18332)
| In the 1850 census, George W. Rounds is age 15 MA, a sailor living in New Bedford with his mother, grandfather, and other relatives. | Rounds, George W. (I28787)
| In the 1850 census, Ruth's age is given as 46, and her birthplace NY. | Remington, Ruth (I11514)
| In the 1850 census, the family is at Lordstown, Trumbill Co., OH: Mathew R. Allen 45, R. R. Allen 44, Prudence 11, Mary 9, Martha 8, Thomas 6, and Angeline 54. | Allen, Matthew Remington (I11120)
| In the 1850 Federal Census at New Bedford, MA (p. 234), Henry & Sarah Dedrick are 50 and 46. This age does not seem right for Sarah, as she should be about 50 also. Perhaps she took a few years off when giving her age, or else someone else in the household was estimating it. Living with them and their two sons is Lydia A. Remington, who appears to be Sarah's niece, daughter of John. However, Lydia A., daughter of John, is listed with her own family at Tiverton in 1850. There may be two Lydias born the same year, and if so, who is this one? Alternatively, she may have been staying with her aunt and uncle when the census was taken, and the informant included her. In the 1855 MA state census, Henry and Sally are in New Bedford with Charles and Elizabeth. Is Elizabeth a daughter? Yes, her death record identifies her parents as Henry and Sally. In the 1860 Federal Census, Henry is age 60, apparently widowed, living at New Bedford with Joseph & Alice Wade. His son William D. Dedrick, 21, a seamann, is also there. In 1870 Henry is age 69, still living at New Bedford, and apparently has remarried (?) to Alice, age 75. In 1880 he is still at New Bedford, age 80, boarding with the family of Patrick Kirwin. | Dedrick, Henry Y. (I05793)
| In the 1850 Federal Census at Northbridge, MA, he is listed as Thomas A. Remington, age 5. In the 1870 Federal Census, Alonzo (25) & Almira are living in Northbridge, MA. His brother Edwin (21) and young wife Mary are living with them. | Remington, Thomas Alonzo (I08758)
