501 According to his gravestone, William died at age 92. He was a graduate of Harvard College, class of 1747, and was among the signers of the Declaration of Independance.

The inscription on his gravestone reads as follows:
"In memory of William Ellery born December 22 1727, graduated Harvard College 1747, early in the contest between Great Britain and her American Colonies, he left the practice of Law to represent this State in Congress. He was an active and influential member of that body for many years and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He died after an illness of four days February 15 1820. He was in full possession of his powers to the close of his long life, rarely unfitted by disease for study, society, or official duties and waiting for death with the hope of a Christian."

Information on William's life and his gravesite can be found at findagrave.com.
Ellery, Hon. William Jr. (I07148)

502 According to his obituary, Colin came from Canada to Michigan at the age of 12. Currie, Colin Camble (I21029)

503 According to his obituary, Mr. Slocum was a prominent citizen and businessman of Pawtucket for many years. Born in Providence in 1924, as a young man he moved to Pawtucket and opened the first bootmaking business in the state. He later was in the cigar business and also manufactured carpets. In subsequent years he moved to Attleboro. Slocum, Eason Lafayette Sr. (I26580)

504 According to his obituary, Simeon & Amey had 13 children, 5 boys and 8 girls. I have a family picture which I believe includes the parents and all 13 children; however, I am missing the name of one daughter, probably born early 1880s. I would guess the picture was taken c 1888 - 1890, perhaps a 60th birthday (Simeon, 1889) or anniversary portrait (1890).

In the Federal Census of 1880, the family is living at South Kingstown, RI; there are 11 children.

In 1900 they are still at South Kingstown; three daughters and the youngest son are with the parents.
Whitford, Simeon (I21049)

505 According to Ian Nisbet, her name is Elizabeth Gibson Kennedy Nisbet.

She appears in the 1900 census as Elsie K., in the 1910 census as Elsie G., and in the 1920 census as Elsie G. K. Nesbit.
Nisbet, Elsie Gibson Kennedy (I14331)

508 According to information from Joanne McLaughlin, Winifred was orphaned in her teens and taken in by a family named McGovern. She had twin brothers who were adopted by a Canadian couple. O'Brien, Winifred Josephine (I13541)

509 According to information posted at Rootsweb's Worldconnect (Pamela D. Hudson's family tree), John and his father John Sr. were both Revolutionary soldiers. The family moved from VA to GA about 1775/76, first settling in Burke County, and later moving to Tattnall County, acquiring land on the Ogeechee River. The Sharpe plantation is now a part of the state prison property.

The surname is spelled variously as Sharp or Sharpe in the historical records.

513 According to James Vaught, Jr., Matthew has been married twice and has several children, but as yet I do not have data on them. Nikolaisen, Matthew Jay (I02208)

514 According to John's Revolutionary War Pension File, both he and Mary were born in Tiverton, and knew each other from their youth.

I have roughly estimated his year of birth. At present it is unclear which family group this John Manchester belongs to. He may be a son of Isaac Manchester and Hannah Cundall, since the name Isaac is found several times in subsequent generations.

Or, could he be a son of John & Lidia who were married 13 May 1749 at Tiverton?

Glenn Russell's family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect lists 8 children for this couple, but I am including only 5 of them at this point. This family needs more research.
Manchester, John (I18879)

515 According to Les Ralston, James is the only Rhode Islander known to have fought for the Confederacy. He served in the 50th GA Infantry. When war broke out he was staying with his sister in Thomas County. His sister was married to Edward Remington. James served under Peter McGlashan who later became mayor of Thomasville. As of 1920 he was a resident of Savannah, GA. Sheldon, James Rhodes (I10669)

516 According to Lois Remington Smith in "The Remington Family" p. 41, Harry served in the Civil War and was imprisoned at Andersonville, from which he escaped 27 Sep 1864, possibly as some inmates were being moved. He arrived home c 1 Nov 1864. Remington, Henry "Harry" (I11325)

517 According to McPartland's "History of East Greenwich," Richard Briggs and his family lived on South Road.

His date of birth is given as 1 Feb 1675 in RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 15, p. 303 ("A Line of Descent from John Spencer of East Greenwich, RI").

The will of Richard Briggs of East Greenwich is dated 9 Mar 1733. It mentions his wife Experience; sons Richard, Francis, John, Caleb, Philip, & Daniel; daughters Sarah Aylesworth, Ann King, Mary Briggs, Audrey Briggs; and grandsons Richard Briggs, Caleb Tarbox, & Richard Matteson.
Briggs, Richard (I07227)

518 According to Michael Edward Remington's genealogy, Alice M. Remington was born 10 Sep 1875. However, the 1900 Federal Census gives her birth date as Sep 1873. This agrees with the Federal Census of 1 June 1880, in which Alice was age 6 (soon to be 7). Consequently, I have used 1873 as her birth year (pending further research). Remington, Alice M. (I16135)

519 According to Michael Edward Remington's genealogy, Arthur Edward Remington was born 9 Jun 1881. However, he was already age 2 in the 1880 Federal Census. In addition, the 1900 Federal Census gives his birth date as June 1877. Consequently, I am using the year 1877 as his birth year, pending further research.

In 1910, the family is all together in Manchester, NH, including grandparents, two sons and their wives, and the three grandchildren.

In 1930 the family is at Manchester, NH, as follows (all surname Remington): Noris 51 RI, Laverna 42 MA, Walter 24 NH, Harold 22 NH, William J. 4 and 3/12 NH (says son but he is their grandson), Penn 82 MA (father), and Julia 82 MA (mother). (Norris is Laverna's maiden name.)

His birthplace is given as Providence in the birth record of son William.
Remington, Arthur Edward (I16137)

520 According to Michael Edward Remington's genealogy, Blanche E. Remington was born 29 Apr 1873. However, she is age 8 in the 1880 Federal Census, which makes 1872 a possible birth year. Since Alice's birth year is given as 1873 in the 1900 Federal Census, I have changed Blanche's to 1872 (pending further research). Remington, Etta Blanche (I16134)

521 According to Michael Edward Remington's genealogy, William Lincoln Remington was born 3 Aug 1878. However, the 1900 Federal Census gives his birth date as Aug 1875. In the 1880 Federal Census, William's age is given as 3, which would place his birth year as c1876/77. Therefore, a birth year of 1875/76 seems more likely, since his younger brother Arthur was probably born in 1877 or 1878 (at the latest). This needs more research to confirm.

In 1910 William L. 33 & Elizabeth A. Remington 35 are living in Manchester, NH, with his parents and other family members.
Remington, William "Willy" Lincoln (I16136)

522 According to Mills family historian Katie Mills, Sophia and Jane marred two Waldo brothers. Douglass, Jane (I28169)

524 According to my Dad, Shirley died on the farm in Coventry, RI. Chafee, Shirley Mae (one) (I00198)

525 According to my great-grandma's writings, her father William "was only 13 years old when his mother died -- and he used to work in the factory as a weaver until he went to sea as a cabin boy and followed the sea until his family came to America -- and while they were all working in the factories of Hebronville, for one place, and Central Falls and Pawtucket, I think it was while my aunts -- my father's sisters -- were there, he would go into the mill to see them and my mother was working there also and it was there he met her first."

William probably came to America with his father and sister Mary c1847 (see notes for John Andrews).

In the 1860 Federal Census, William & Eliza J. Andrews, ages 27 & 23, are living at North Providence, RI. He is a weaver. They have two children: William H., 3, and Carrie J., 1 month. In 1870 the family is still at North Providence, Centredale Post Office District.

The family was listed in the 1880 census for Providence / Graniteville; also known as District 1 Johnston:
William Andrews 47 born England
Eliza J Andrews 42 born England
Clara J. 20
James E. 15
Joseph C. 11
Mary E. 8
John F. 6
Estella M. 4
William H. 22

According to Mary's letter, her father William was in the Civil War, and also became an overseer at a mill in Centredale. She said his trade was "boss weaver" -- did she mean a manager of weavers?

His death record at Bristol, RI, identifies him as s/o John & Catherine. According to the record, he died at age 66.
ANDREWS, William (I00007)

526 According to my great-grandma's writings, this "Aunt Emma" was in New Jersey.

In the 1940 census, she is "Anna Andrews" age 66, living with her daughter Florida and family in Cape May, NJ. Son William and family are living nearby.
Seiffert, Emma Louise (I00095)

527 According to my great-grandmother's writings, after Mr. Lockwood's first wife died, Mary went to work for him as a housekeeper, and he later married her.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Mary and her husband Abraham Lockwood are living in Warwick, RI. She is age 65 and he is 68. They have been married for 8 years. According to the census data, Mary immigrated in 1847.

Abraham & Mary are still at Warwick in the census taken 27 Apr 1910, although Mary must have died shortly after this.

531 According to notes from Dr. J. A. Remington, Darius had the following children by his first wife Hannah: Abby, Polly, Dinah, Elizabeth, Joseph, & Jeremiah. Knight, Darius (I15572)

532 According to notes from Dr. John A. Remington, Nicholas & Patience had the following children: dtrs. Rhoda, Hannah, Louisa, Patience, Susan; sons George, Nicholas, & Lindsay. I can't confirm all of these children or their dates of birth, but I have included the names and information here pending further research. I can confirm Susan, Hannah, Louisa, and Lindsey. Johnson, Nicholas Whitford (I12170)

533 According to notes I received from Dr. John A. Remington, Mr. Pitcher kept a store in Knightsville.

PITCHER Capt. John, at Cranston, in 91st year, May 1, 1820

PITCHER Capt. John, at Cranston, in 91st year. Sermon by Rev. Mr. Wilson. Ecl. 12-1. May 1, 1820

He may have remarried after the death of his wife Mary:
PITCHER Mrs. Alice, wife of Capt. John, at Cranston, in 66th year, Dec. 22, 1804
Pitcher, Captain John (I26614)

534 According to notes in the Mary E. Rice Collection, Sarah's Tillinghast ancestry was like this, starting from the earliest American ancestor: Pardon, Philip, John, Pardon, Stukely, Stephen, Samuel, Sarah. This needs to be confirmed. Tillinghast, Sarah A. (I04114)

535 According to notes in the Special Collections at NE Hist & Gen Soc, Dan Remington and his family went to Rush, Monroe Co., NY, in 1804 from Suffield, CT. At that time there was a colony formed consisting of families from CT, including Goff, Brainerd, Tupper, and others.

History of Niagara County, NY, pub 1878, p. 293, states that Dan Remington came to the home of his brother-in-law Charles Goff in Niagara Township in 1825. Later he removed to Michigan, settling in Macomb County, probably in 1836. (noted in same source as above)

This manuscript at NE Hist & Gen Soc has Dan's birth year as 1774; and says that he and Hannah had fourteen children, four of whom died young; however, only 9 are listed in the file; the list includes an Abner, a Justin, and a Jesse. However, I am not sure about the accuracy of these names in this family.

In the 1850 Federal Census, "Dan" Remington b CT is age 75, a farmer, living with his son Norman and family at Ray, Macomb Co., MI.

In 1860 Dan Remington is age 85 MA, a shoemaker, living with his son Joseph in Shelby, Macomb Co., MI.

I have not found him listed in the 1870 census.

According to the History of Macomb County, MI (Google Books), Daniel died at age 96, "from the effects of an injury in a sawmill from a flying slab."
Remington, Daniel "Dan" (I10028)

536 According to notes in the Special Collections at NE Hist & Gen Soc, there were two other children in this famiy: Joseph & Lydia (no sources mentioned; needs more research to confirm). Remington, Elihu Sr. (I08106)

537 According to notes in the Special Collections at NE Hist Gen Soc, Joseph was one of the first settlers of Shelby Township, MI.

In 1850 he appears to be the Joseph Remington 34 and apparently single, a carpenter, living in Ray, Macomb Co., MI. However, a Joseph Remington, age 35 and married, also a carpenter, is living at Oakland, Oakland Co., MI; there his wife is Alvina and they have a daughter Caroline, 4. This may be the same Joseph listed twice, although the two listings have the exact same date of 13 Aug. Because of the census data in 1860, I am assuming that Alvina is a first wife for this Joseph, and that Caroline in 1850 is Carrie in 1860.

In 1860 he is age 42, a joiner, living at Shelby, MI. With him is Jane Remington 26 MI and Carrie Remington 14 MI; also with him is his father Dan Remington, age 85 (shoemaker, MA). Jane is probably a second wife. This needs more research.

In subsequent MI censuses there is a Joseph H. Remington who has a wife named Nancy J. and N. Jane; their ages and places of birth seem to fit this couple. They have a son named E. Lind born c 1861. Later, Lind J. Remington is married to Mary J. and has children Howard W., Carrie M., & Flossie O. With a daughter named Carrie, this may be a clue that this family belongs to Joseph, son of Dan, who had a daughter Carrie (needs more research to confirm).

A family tree at Ancestry.com has Joseph Hile Remington as married to Nancy Jane Naramour. At the present time I am making an assumption that this is the correct couple for this particular Joseph. Other than the above census evidence, I have not personally confirmed this.

I am wondering if his middle name should be Hill? Hannah Goff's mother was Deborah Hill.
Remington, Joseph H. (I19948)

538 According to one family tree online, Daniel was a son of Peleg; but this needs more research to be confirmed. SHEARMAN, Daniel (I28354)

539 According to one genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, William had 19 children by his three wives.

From Pam Amari: Bahmer in his "History of Coshocton County" in an article about Z. T. Humphrey (Zachery Taylor) born November 10, 1846, son of William and Elizabeth (McMahon) Humphrey says, "William Junior was born near Providence, Rhode Island and was a sailor on the ocean between Narragansett Bay and the West Indies for 12 years. After leaving the sea, he came to Coshocton County and engaged in farming until his death, January 28, 1865."

From Pam Amari, words by Delight Trent: "The History of Coshocton County, Ohio by Hill 1861 Tiverton Township, page 595 says: (Isaac Draper, first settler) The next settler of whom anything is known was William Humphrey who came to this township about 1812 from the vicinity of Fall River, Massachusetts. He was a brother of Squire Humphrey a prominent pioneer of New Castle Township and owned lots 19, 20 and 29 of section 3. He, William, brought his family and goods through the wilderness on a litter, made by strapping poles between two horses, placed one in front of the other. The cabin which he hastily put together for the shelter of his family and goods was without door, floor or chimney and often at night wildcats and coons would clamber over the roof and make night hideous with their squalling and screeching."
Humphrey, William Jr. (I10570)

540 According to one genealogy, Wait (Harris) Fenner died in March 1720/21. If that is true, only two of these children are hers, and the other four are by Joseph's second wife, Amy. However, the genealogy at the Fenner family web site has all the children borne by Wait. (needs more research) Harris, Wait (I13576)

541 According to Pat Boyden's genealogy, Kate was born 30 Sep 1848 at Salisbury, Addison Co., VT. Kelsey, Kathryn "Kate" A. (I16449)

542 According to Remington descendant Gretchen Paulsen, Dorothy was the first female in this branch of her family to graduate from college; she achieved highest honors. Ellis, Dorothy Julia (I18791)

543 According to researcher Alden G. Beaman, the only one of Edward's children whose existance is proven is Daniel. He also mentions a theory that Edward was possibly a son of John Wilcox, b.1580, of Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, England.

However, a more recent article clarifies some family data on Edward. See "Edward Wilcox of Lincolnshire and Rhode Island" by Jane Fletcher Fiske, New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 147, April 1993, pp. 191 ff.

His name was on a list of inhabitants admitted to Aquidneck Island in 1638.
WILCOX, Edward (I03364)

544 According to Rev. Shepherd in "The History of Kirby Underdale," Benjamin's twins were Lillie Mary & Florence Effie. However, they are not with the family in the 1880 census, so may have died young.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Frank & Mary Remington, ages 34 and 36, are living at New York City. Frank is a Baptist clergyman. Daughter Florence is 4; Mary is 2.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Frank & Mary Remington and family are at East Cleveland; the children's names appear to be Mary, Grace K., & Henry. In the 1880 Federal Census, Frank & Mary Remington and family are living in District 51, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH. The children's names appear to be May A., Grace K., & Harry H.

I am not sure of the exact dates of all the children in this family (needs more research).
Remington, Benjamin Franklin "Frank" (I02984)

545 According to Rev. Shepherd in "The History of Kirby Underdale," Henry resided at Adams, MA; Burlington, VT; Cleveland, OH; and Huron, OH.

A genealogy chart at NE Historic Genealogical Society Library lists four children for this couple: Rev. Benjamin Franklin, Julia Ann, Maria Ann, & Fidelia.
Remington, Henry (I02982)

546 According to several family trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, John was a son of Samuel Tefft and Sarah Hooper. Tefft, John Hooper (I23677)

547 According to several family trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, Laban was a son of Samuel Tefft and Sarah Hooper. Tefft, Laban (I23675)

548 According to T. Dowling's family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, Elva married second to Eugene Mayo. Witter, Elva E. (I23531)

549 According to the "Connecting Capron Cousins" website, Jane is a descendant of Banfield Capron.

REMINGTON JANE (PARKER*) 1831 - 3 AUG 1922 PV003
Parker, Jane (I25359)

550 According to the 1789 Boston City Directory, "Nathaniel Nuttage" was a house-wright.

Nathaniel may have married a second time: "In Boston, Mr. Nathaniel Nottage, aged 62, to Mrs. Harriet Witherbe, aged 29, after a courtship of 3 weeks and 6 days" (source: 23 March 1819 Rochester Telegraph). I am including this marriage here pending further confirmation.

I am not sure Nathaniel belongs to these parents (needs more research to confirm).
Nottage, Nathaniel (I16070)
