7201 The will of Jane Nicholson, of Portsmouth, spinster, is dated 9 Feb 1721/22, proved 10 of 11th month (Feb) 1723/24. It mentions my son William Brown "so called" and granddaughter Jane Brown, d/o William; cousins Jane Burrel, Francis Burril, Hannah Burrel, and William Brown; cousin John Coggeshall "so called," s/o cousin Jane Burrel.

Her gravestone says she died at age 52, but according to her birthdate she was 54.
Nicholson, Jane (I02460)

7202 The will of Jane or Jean Matteson of Warwick, RI, singlewoman, is dated 15 Jan 1747 and proved 8 Feb 1747. It mentions her father Francis Matteson; brothers Job & Thomas (and his daughter Sarah Matteson); and sisters Sary Corey, Hannah Whitford, Elizabeth Matteson (and her daughter Deliverance Matteson), & Phebe Green; also "cousins" Ruth Corey & Deborah Matteson. Matteson, Jane (I01686)

7203 The will of Jeremiah Clarke of Newport, yeoman, dated 13 June 1728 (codicil 9 Jan 1729), and proved 3 Feb 1728/9, mentions his wife Anne; 5 sons as follows: Weston, James, Samuel deceased, Jeremiah, and Henry; and (probably) 4 daughters: Unnamed Weeden deceased, Anne Greenman, Sarah Weeden, and Frances Sanford deceased. The will also mentions 4 grandsons, all sons of Samuel: John, Audley, Samuel, and Daniel. There are no other Clarke grandsons mentioned. He does mention other grandchildren, children of his two deceased daughters.

Notes from a family tree at ancestry.com (to be confirmed):
"Jeremiah, son of Jeremiah Clarke, was born 1643, died January 16, 1729. In 1666 he was a freeman. In 1696-98-99-1700-01-02-03-04-05, he was deputy. He was ordained deacon of the Second Baptist Church in 1701. He deeded one-half of his lands in Providence and in Connecticut to his son James, September 17, 1691, and on the same date, the other half of the above lands to his son-in-law, Jeremiah Weeden, for three pounds, and the sum of three pounds annually during the life of Jeremiah and his wife Ann. He married Ann Audley, who died December 15, 1732. Children: Jeremiah, Henry, James, Samuel, Weston, Frances (born December 15, 1669), Mary (died 1756, married Jeremiah Weeden), Anne (born 1675), and Sarah (died 1729)."

Note: the above can't be exactly correct, because Mary must be the deceased daughter in the above will, written in 1728. It appears that Mary had to have died before 13 June 1728. One family tree has Mary's sister Sarah marrying her brother-in-law Jeremiah Weeden, after Mary died. That would make more sense. I believed it means to say that Jeremiah Weeden died in 1756.
Clarke, Jeremiah (I02788)

7204 The will of Job Whaley of Coventry, dated 19 Jan 1833, proved 6 Mar 1835, mentions wife Rachel; two sons, Samuel & Reuben; two dtrs Ruth Knight and Esther C. Greene; grandsons Caleb Whaley, Amos Greene, and Job W. Greene. Whaley, Job (I09244)

7206 The will of John Dennis of Tiverton, yeoman, is dated 10 July 1774, proved 5 March 1787. It mentions wife Susanna (wording implies not first wife); sons Robert, Thomas, Shadrack, Samuel, & Redford; dtrs Susanna (wife of Jacob Taber) and Jerusha (w/o John Woodman). Dennis, Captain John (I22414)

7207 The will of John Greene of West Greenwich was dated 15 Aug 1754, proved 6 Nov 1756 at West Greenwich, RI. John's will mentions his wife, Mary Greene -- "who received household goods which she brought to me when I married her" (clue that she was not his first wife). He mentions 5 sons and 5 daughters, as well as several grandchildren; sons named are Silas dec'd, John, Timothy, Samuel, & Nathan; dtrs named are Enfield Matteson dec'd, Ann Nichols, Mary Johnson, Margaret Matteson, & Hester Weeks (Wickes). (Possibly another dtr. Elizabeth died young.) Grandchildren mentioned: Obediah, und 21, and 3 unnamed dtrs under 18, all of Silas dec'd; Anne Matteson und 18, and Josiah & Silas Matteson, all of Enfield dec'd. He does not mention any grandchildren who are children of his living children.

I have made an assumption that John's second wife was Mary Almy (see marriage notes).
Greene, John Jr. (I09288)

7208 The will of John Hopkins of West Greenwich, yeoman, is dated 25 Aug 1790, proved the last Monday of Dec 1791. It mentions wife Mary; sons Jonathan & George; dtrs Susannah Burlingame, Rhoba Whitford, and Wait Case.

He could be s/o Joseph & Martha Hopkins who was born in EG 2 Apr 1712; but I am not sure.

He also could be this individual: Hopkins John, and Mercy Greene; m. by Thomas Spencer, Justice, Oct. 9, 1732; East Greenwich marriage. The name Mercy is sometimes interchangeable with Mary in the old records.
Hopkins, John (I26930)

7209 The will of John Rogers of Newport was proved 4 May 1761. It mentions his wife Jane, and the following children: Thomas, James, John (dec'd), Jonathan, Sarah Gardner, Martha Reynolds, Elizabeth Stafford; and grandsons John & Thomas, sons of John (dec'd).

John is mentioned as a brother in the will of Joseph Rogers dtd. 20 Sep 1710.
Rogers, John (I24333)

7210 The will of John Tripp of Portsmouth, carpenter, being 67 years or there about, is dated 6 October 1677 and proved 1 September 1678. It mentions by name his wife Mary; sons Abiell, John, Peleg, Joseph, & James; and daughter Martha; also granddaughter Elizabeth Wodell. Also see notes below.

Notes from "Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol II", Page 176:
John Tripp of Portsmouth, R. I., was born in 1610, and died 1678. He was one of the signers of the compact at Portsmouth, April 30, 1639. March 1, 1643, he was granted by the town three acres of land next to Thomas Gorton. On November 30, 1657, he was granted planting land on Hog Island for a period of seven years. He was an influential man in the community, occupying many offices of importance in his town and in the colony; for many years he was a member of the Town Council, and deputy to the General Assembly in 1648/54/55/58/61/62/63/64/66/67/68/69 and 72. In 1670/73/74 and 75 he was the assistant from Portsmouth. His wife was Mary Paine, daughter of Anthony and Rose of Portsmouth. His wife survived him and is mentioned in his will as Mary; she was the sole executrix of his will, dated December (or Oct) 6, 1677, and proved October 28 (or Sept 1), 1678. He left lands in Dartmouth, Portsmouth, Narragansett and Westerly to his children, and to each of his grand-children five shillings (to buy Bibles for them). His widow may have married a second time, April 4, 1682, to Benjamin Engell. Her father, Anthony Paine, died in 1650, and her mother married again, to a Mr. Weeden.

From the Tripp Family Association website: John TRIPP The Founder was christened on 8 Sep 1611 in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, England. He died on 12 Feb 1678 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island. He was born in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, England . . . By his own hand, he wrote that he had 11 brothers and sisters, so he evidently did not have much to start with. For that reason he indentured himself to Randall Holden so that he could learn the carpenter trade. He was admitted as an inhabitant of the island of Aquidneck, (Later Rhode Island), and on April 30, 1638 signed a compact with twenty-eight others . . . John Tripp married Mary Paine in 1639 and during the next 21 years had, and then reared eleven children.

It names his father John Hopkins dec'd; wife Mary; sons Job, Oliver, Fones, & John; dtrs Roby Stanton, Ruth Hopkins, Susannah Brown, & Eunice Greene; also 2 grandsons named Jonathan Hopkins, sons of Job and Fones. Hopkins, Jonathan (I01708)

7214 The will of Jonathan Knight of Cranston is dated 4 Oct 1756, proved 29 Sep 1762. It mentions wife Mary; sons Jonathan, Ezra, Philip, Andrew, & Benjamin; and dtrs Dorcas & Elizabeth.

On 12 July 1717, Jonathan Knight (of Mashanticut) deeded land to his brother Joseph (of Kingstown) that had belonged to his late father Jonathan Knight (of Providence).

According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, this couple had 11 children.
Knight, Jonathan (I27081)

7215 The will of Joseph Nicholson of Portsmouth, RI, husbandman, is dated 12 April 1693, proved 5 Sep 1693. It mentions seven children: Joseph, Sarah Ward w/o John; Rebecka Carr w/o Nicholas, Rachall Pebody w/o John, Dina Burrill w/o Jeames, Elizabeth Nicholson, and Jane Nicholson; grandchildren: Jane d/o son Joseph; children of Nicholas & Rebecka Carr -- Joseph, Nicholas, Jane, Caleb, Rebecka, Margaret, & Marcy; children of Jeames & Dina Burrill -- Jeames, Elizabeth, Dina, & Suzana; children of John & Sarah Ward -- Joseph & Elizabeth; children of John & Rachall Pebody -- John, Joseph, Dorothy, & Jane; friends John Easton 2nd and Walter Clarke both of Newport, overseers.

Death record: NICHOLSON Joseph, on board ship Elizabeth, Daniel Gould, Jr., master, from Barbadoes, June, 1693.

The following notes may refer to this couple Joseph & Jane Nicholson (source: The Ecclesiastical History of New England Vol 2):

There are several references in this book to a Joseph Nicholson and one mentions his wife as Jane.

On or about 7 March 1660 JN "and wife" were examined at Boston (p 218).

On 16 Oct 1660 Quakers in prison were allowed to board a ship and return to England -- refers to JN "and wife Jane" -- but they could not be accommodated so returned to prison (p 227).

In 1660 JN and wife were "now in prison and had been banished on pain of death" and told they must depart from the Colony "by the next 4th day" (p 220)

Around or after 4 July 1663 JN and other men visited Newcastle and were whipped at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, then allowed to depart. After visiting the meeting house in Dover, NH, they were taken to prison and detained a fortnight, then let go (p 324).

In Dec 1663 JN and others were called "vagabond Quakers" in Salem, Boston, & Dedham (p 312). It's unclear where they actually were at that time -- whether they had already left and were being warned to never return (as did Mary Dyer, who had gone to RI, and she was killed because she returned into MA Bay territory).

If we assume this all refers to the same JN, it seems that he was in the Boston/Salem area in 1660, then in New Hampshire in 1663.

The dates and location of Joseph & Jane's children could place the family in this scenario. It is possible that they left MA and went to Barbados and Martinique, and later to Rhode Island. The book mentions two other Quakers who did just that.

Nicholson, Joseph (I02164)

7216 The will of Josephus Rice of Warwick, yeoman, is dated 26 Mar 1812, proved 17 July 1813. It mentions wife Sarah; son Thomas Rice; dtrs: Elizabeth Whitford w/o John S., Phebe Rice, Sarah Arnold w/o Daniel, and deceased dtr Sarah Arnold formerly wife of James Arnold; and granddtr. Lucy Arnold, d/o James and Sarah.

His will is somewhat confusing because he mentions his wife as Sarah Rice. However, his daughter Sarah's (w/o Daniel Arnold) gravestone identifies her as the daughter of Josephus & Mary. He also mentions another daughter Sarah, deceased. Both Sarahs married an Arnold; however, one could not have died before the other was born, if the ages on the gravestone and in the will are correct. Could there have been a divorce, and he remarried to a Sarah, and had another daughter named Sarah? Or, perhaps his second wife already had a daughter Sarah, whom he adopted; or perhaps she was simply his stepdaughter and he included her in his will as a daughter. Josephus did have a daughter Abigail (Warwick VRs), and according to DAR records she married James Arnold and they had a daughter named Lucy b 30 June 1800, so perhaps the second daughter Sarah in his will should read Abigail.
Rice, Josephus (I02841)

7217 The will of Josiah Colvin of Scituate, yeoman, is dated 17 March 1791 and proved 11 June 1791. It mentions wife Freelove; sons Aaron, David, Andrew, & Stephen; dtrs Dorcas Ralph, Patience Burlingame, & Alice Colvin; and sister Anna Colvin. Colvin, Josiah (I22244)

7218 The will of Lydia Boomer of Freetown, MA, is dated 27 Dec 1759, proved 3 Nov 1761. It mentions siblings Caleb and Joshua Boomer, and Deborah Mason; cousins Joseph Jenks and Boomer Elsbree; kinsmen Benjamin Jenks; Nathaniel, Matthew, Isaac, and John Luther; Thomas, John, and William Elsbree; Henry, Joshua, and Stephen Salberry; kinswomen Abiah Monro; Ruth Sprage; Hannah and Susannah Salberry; Mary and Eleanor Luther; Mary, Hannah, Lydia, Martha, and Rebecca Boomer; Mary Elsbree; and Deborah Mason. Cousin Caleb Boomer was appointed executor.  Boomer, Lydia (I19656)

7219 The will of Mary Ann Manchester of Tiverton, spinster alias singlewoman, is dated 6 Nov 1837 and proved 5 Feb 1838. In it she mentions her sister Rachel B. Fish, w/o Robert Fish. Also mentioned, no relationship specified, is Philip Manchester, s/o David & Hope.

I have roughly estimated Mary Ann's year of birth.
Manchester, Mary Ann (I18056)

7220 The will of Mary Hazard mentions her father Samuel Carr, deceased; brothers Samuel & Ebenezer Carr; and sisters Comfort, Abigail, & Hannah (Smith); and children of brother Samuel -- Francis & Demaris (Allen); and the daughter of Samuel & Demaris Allen, Demaris Allen under 18. Carr, Mary (I04629)

7221 The will of Mary Hopkins of West Greenwich, widow, advanced in years, is dated 13 Jan 1795, proved last Monday of Sep 1806. It mentions sons Jonathan & George; daughters Susannah Burlingame, Rubah Whitford, and Wate Case. Unknown, Mary (I26931)

7222 The will of Matthew Hill of Scituate is dated 31 March 1788, proved 30 June 1788. It mentions wife Rhoda (who brought furnitrue with her when she married him); sons Nathaniel, Matthew, and Caleb; and daughters Deliverance Blancher, Phebe Briggs, and Elizabeth Hill. Hill, Matthew (I05914)

7223 The will of Nathaniel Munday of Stamford, CT, was made on 18 March 1785, according to the three witnesses. It mentions my "loving and beloved wife Sarah Munday" who receives all property and possessions "as long as she shall remain my widow."

"I give and bequest to my loving nephew Nathaniel Munday all my Real Estate to be to him and his Heirs and Assigns forever after my widow shall be dec'd or if she should marry -- meaning all my Estate that I have and hold in the Town of Stamford, State of Connecticut."

"I give and bequest to my loving nephew Richard Stanton son of my sister Rebecca Stanton all my right and title that I have in and unto a Dwelling House in Rhode Island to be to him his Heirs and Assigns forever at and after the widowhood of my said wife."

"Stamford, Fairfield County on March 23 1785 three witnesses made oath that on the 18th day Instant March they saw Nathaniel Munday the Testator now Dec'd sign and seal said will and that they heard him publish pronounce and declare the same to be his Last Will and Testament."

I have made an assumption that he died about 20 March 1785.

Mr. John Arnold declined to be Executor while the widow Sarah Munday accepted.
Munday, Nathaniel (I28595)

7224 The will of Nicholas Northup of North Kingstown mentions his (probably third) wife Sarah, four unnamed daughters, and the following sons: William, Thomas, Gideon, Nicholas, and Rouse. I do not know which children were born of which wife.

Some genealogies have his first wife as Abigail Slocum or Abigail Eldred. I have not been able to confirm this, but have included her with some estimated dates, pending further research. If Nicholas was in fact married before he married Freelove, some of the children -- particularly Thomas -- may have been of this first marriage.
Northup, Esquire Nicholas (I13246)

7225 The will of Pardon Sheldon of Cranston, dated 9 October 1848, proved 30 June 1849, mentions his wife Rebecca W. Sheldon, sons Israel Remington, Robert Aborn, Pardon, James Rhodes, George Frederick, & Lewis; daughters Louisa Greene, Patience Aborn, Rebecca Aborn, Mary Tyler, & Huldah Dorcas. One of the four trustees was Samuel T. Remington; one of the witnesses was Remington Arnold.

Some information on Pardon Sheldon and his family came from a posting by Drusilla Sheldon, 28 September 1999, on the Sheldon Family Forum at genealogy.com.

"Pardon Sheldon was a lifelong resident of Pawtuxet, R. I., and a prominent figure in its life and affairs. He was active in town affairs for many years." (from "History of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations," Biographical; NY: The American Historical Society, Inc., 1920, p. 204)
Sheldon, Captain Pardon (I10655)

7226 The will of Patience Andrew of Coventry, dated 15 Mar 1777, and proved 1 Sep 1777, mentions daughters Zilpha Green, w/o Stephen; Rhoda Matteson; & Vilate Potter; sisters Rebecca Andrew & Jane Andrew; and Amey Johnson, d/o Elkanah Johnson (no relationship stated). Amey or Almy may have been a niece; see the will of Patience's father, James Greene.

Patience is mentioned as Patience Andrew in the will of her father.
Greene, Patience (I09278)

7227 The will of Preserved Pearce mentions his (probably second) wife Sarah, daughters Hannah Pearce & Mary Dexter, and son-in-law Thomas Arnold of East Greenwich; also, nine grandchildren. Pierce, Major Preserved (I03338)

7228 The will of Rachel Colegrove, widow of Thomas late of WG, dated 4 Nov 1820, proved 25 Mar 1822, mentions sons Jesse & Thomas; dtrs Elizabeth Carr and Rachel Whaley, wife of Job; also grand-dtr Esther Whaley. Unknown, Rachel (I09247)

7229 The will of Rebecca Green of Coventry, widow, was dated 9 June 1784 and proved 11 Nov 1786. It mentions sons Nathaniel, James, Wardwell, John, & Isaac; and daughters Rebecca Andrew, w/o William Andrew; and Jane Andrew, w/o Elnathan Andrew; as well as two granddaughters named Rebecca Andrew, daughters of her two daughters Rebecca & Jane. Other granddaughters mentioned are: Zilpha Green, w/o Stephen; Vilate Potter, w/o George; & Rhoda Matteson, w/o Rufus. CAHOONE, Rebeckah (I09249)

7230 The will of Reuben Mathewson of Johnston, dated 21 May 1842 (codicil dated 3 June 1842), and proved 18 June 1842, mentions his wife Anne; sons Reuben Jr. and Henry Remington; and five grandsons and two granddaughters. Mathewson, Reuben (I08871)

7231 The will of Robert Whitford, yeoman of East Greenwich, is dated 31 Oct 1768, provde 29 Nov 1788. It mentions wife Margaret; sons Caleb & Robert; dtrs Mary Hopkins, Maraley (single), Margaret Wait, and Diner (single). Whitford, Robert (I01272)

7232 The will of Ruth Thurston, widow, was dated 25 Jan 1765, codicil was dated 28 Oct 1767, proved 2 Nov 1767. It mentions her late husband Jonathan Thurston of Newport, and her mother Ruth, d/o Daniel Gould. It also mentions three children: Jonathan, Joseph, & Elizabeth. Executors were Edward Scott & Godfrey Malbourne, Jr. Scott, Ruth (I21694)

7233 The will of Sarah Rogers of Newport is dated 11 Feb 1731 and proved 6 Mar 1731. It mentions sons William, James, & Isaac (all under 21); and dtrs Elizabeth Barker and _____ Commen; also brother Samuel Rogers [probably meaning brother-in-law]. Lawton, Sarah (I24438)

7234 The will of Sion Seabury, dated 21 Sep 1793 and proved 15 Aug 1801 at Tiverton, RI, mentions his (assumed second) wife Dorcas (and the possessions she brought when she married him); also mentions sons Aaron, Philip, & Joseph; daughters Dorcas (w/o Abner Sowle) and Alice (single); grandchildren John, Peleg, David, Cornelius, Peirce, George, Job, and Mary.

I am not sure when Sion's first wife died and when he married Dorcas; consequently I am not sure if daughter Dorcas is from his first or second marriage. This needs more research. For the time being I have placed the daughter Dorcas as from a second marriage, with the assumption that Anna died shortly after their fourth child was born.
Seabury, Sion (I23268)

7235 The will of Stephen Smith, Sr., of Warwick, is dated 1 June 1815, codicil dated 13 Feb 1821, and proved 12 July 1824. It mentions his wife Phebe, sons Benjamin, Stephen Jr., & Israel, and daughters Mary Remington, Phebe Smith, Lydia Smith, & Sally Smith.

I have been able to find definite birth dates for only two of the children -- Benjamin & Israel. For Mary, the RI Cemetery Database says 1770, but the supplement to Descendants of Roger Williams says 1776. This needs more research. Consequently, I am not sure which children are of Patience and which are of Phebe.
Smith, Capt. Stephen Jr. (I05056)

7236 The will of Stephen Waterman of Scituate, dated 16 Jan 1797 and proved April 1804, mentions wife Marcy; sons Olney & Stephen; dtrs Mary, Abigail, Phebe, & Sally.

WATERMAN Stephen, formerly of Cranston, at Scituate, in 84th year, March 28, 1804
Waterman, Stephen (I26611)

7237 The will of Susanna Cary of Bristol, widow, was proved the 1st Monday of October 1764. In, she mentions sons Benjamin & Nathaniel, and daughter Elizabeth Clarke. Kent, Susannah (I12810)

7238 The will of Sylvester Sweet, yeoman, advanced in life, is dated 7 Mar 1804, proved 25 Jan 1806 at East Greenwich. It mentions wife Dorcas; sons James, Samuel, Thomas, Sylvester dec'd, & Elisha; and daughters Tabitha Sweet, Lydia w/o John Johnson, Almy w/o Amos Vaughn, Wait w/o George Wightman, Mary w/o Charles (should read Pardon) Tillinghast, Sarah w/o William Sleid, and susannah w/o Charles Sleid; grandson Luther Sweet s/o son Sylvester dec'd. Sweet, Deacon Sylvester (I05839)

7239 The will of Thankful Collins of Warwick, yeoman, is dated 14 Feb 1757 and was proved 12 Sep 1757. It mentions his son Thomas; and daughters Elizabeth Remington, Sarah Collins, & Lydia Collins.

There is a notation in James N. Arnold's VRs concerning three of the children of Thankful -- Elizabeth, Sarah, & Thomas -- concerning a birth (or baptism?) at Narragansett on 12 May 1740.
Collins, Thankful (I20501)

7240 The will of Thomas Colgrove of WG, yeoman, dated 3 Dec 1811, proved 25 Apr 1814 at WG, mentions but does not name his living wife; sons Jesse & Thomas; daughters Elizabeth Carr and Rachel Whaley; son-in-law Job Whaley. Colgrove, Thomas (I09246)

7241 The will of Thomas Collins of Warwick, RI, is dated 7 Mar 1725/6, and it was proved 18 Mar 1725/6. The will mentions his wife Mary: sons Elizur, William (dec'd), Thomas, Samuell (under age), & Thankful; and daughters Sarah Ruttenborge, Ann Collins, & Abigail Collins (under 18).

I have made an assumption that the Thomas Collins who married Abigail, Anna, & Mary is the son of Elizur & Sarah whose birth is in the Warwick records: "Collins Thomas, of Lieut. Ellyza and Sarah, Oct. 26, 1664."
Collins, Thomas (I20505)

7242 The will of Thomas Durfee of Portsmouth, dated 4 Feb 1709/10, proved 17 July 1712, mentions wife Deliverance; sons Richard (eldest), Thomas, William, Richard (dec'd), and Benjamin (youngest); daughters Patience Tallman and Deliverance Durfee (youngest); grandsons, sons of Richard: Richard & Thomas.

"Thomas DURFEE (742) was born in 1643 in England. LDS Family Search Ancestral File indicates that he was born Oct 1643 in Portsmouth, RI, where he was also chistened. (AFN: 9M2P-N5 & film # 1760781) Bonnie Hubbard's material indicates that he was born in England in 1643. He died on 14 Jul 1712 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. He was buried in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. (LDS Family Search Ancestral File, AFN: 9M2P-N5) IMMIGRANT - "The Durfee article in Boyer, p. 183, says that there were no Durfees in England before 1628 nor after 1723 and that they were probably French Huguenot. The first in America was Thomas, born in England in 1643. Family tradition (Reed) says he came to Portsmouth in 1660 and 'The recorded evidence of his appearing at the session of the Colonial General Assembly of Rhode Island, in October 1664, carries unmistakable proof of his presence in the Colony many months previous to that session.' The family wasn't admitting it even as late as 1902 but Boyer describes the proof: 'In 1664 the 'insoelent carriadge of Thomas Durfee with the sayd [Peter] Tallmans wife' was brought to the attention of the Rhode Island General Assembly {RCRI, 2:85], and on 3 May 1665 Peter Tallman was given a divorce from his wife as she admitted she had had a child 'begotten by another man' [RCRI, 2:123].' Thomas probably came as a redemptioner. Such a person was one who couldn't pay his passage and was sold at auction for the lowest term of years for which anyone would take him. Thomas was admitted a freeman of Portsmouth in 1673 and served on a petit jury in 1677. He was elected Constable for one year terms in 1687 and 1690. He was chosen one of the Overseers of the Poor in 1691 and made a Deputy that same year and again in 1694. He was elected to the town council in 1692 and again in 1694. It appears that the townspeople had forgiven if not forgotten his sin. I wonder what Peter Tallman was like -- in 1683 he had moved to Guilford, near New Haven, Connecticut, and sold eight acres of Portsmouth land to Thomas Durfee for
Durfee, Thomas (I22115)

7243 The will of Thomas Matteson, of Coventry, Esquire, is dated 14 March 1793 and proved 13 April 1793. It mentions his wife Susannah (whom I assume to be his second wife); sons Thomas, Francis, David, John, Henry, Job, Richard (dec'd.), & Solomon; daughters Sarah Colvin, Phebe Whaley, Hannah Tyler, Elizabeth Matteson, & Marcy Matteson; and heirs of deceased son Richard: Levi, Alden, Joanna, & Richard. Matteson, Thomas Sr. (I11454)

7244 The will of Thomas Nichols of East Greenwich is dated 7 Dec 1738 and proved 30 Nov 1745. It mentions sons James, and Thomas dec'd; dtr Frances Peirce, widow; other daughters not named; son-in-law Giles Peirce; son-in-law Joseph Edmunds of Warwick; grandson Thomas Edmunds; other family members.
