He was named for his father, but in the family was known by his middle name, Newton. The family lived on a farm near the border of Plainfield where it adjoins Savoy. Aaron Newton was a deacon, and his gravestone is thus inscribed (for more information on this family, see "A Remington Family History" compiled by Lois Remington Smith).

Aaron died of stomach cancer.
Remington, Deacon Aaron Newton (I11312)

3314 In the 1850 Federal Census, Aaron and his family are living in Savoy, Berkshire, MA. With them is his elderly father, Benjamin. Brother James is next door with his family. Also nearby in the same town is (probable) brother Benjamin and his family. Another neighboring family is that of Amos Deming, possibly related to Laura.

Aaron was appointed guardian for the orphaned children of his brother Reuben.

Aaron and his two eldest sons served as deacons at the Baptist Church in Savoy. His brother-in-law, Deacon Amos Deming, served as pastor for 14 years (for more information on this family group, see "A Remington Family History" compiled by Lois Remington Smith).

According to the death record, Deacon Aaron Remington died at age 63 of typhoid fever. His father died later that year at age 94. Their death records are on the same page of the Savoy, MA, death book.

Cemetery info from find-a-grave:
The location is described as "1/10 of a Mile North of Route 116" and "Walled up plot on Simon Le Marre's Farm (c. 1946) in the South East Corner of the town"

(In 1860, Isaac Lake, age 14, is living with the George Sawyer family, along with Lucy Lake, age 70. Lucy Lake c 1790 - 30 Jul 1868 TV 011)

In the 1860 Federal Census, Adaline Tripp is age 62, still living at Tiverton. With her are sons Green & Orlin (Alden?), ages 32 & 28.
Manchester, Adeline (I12248)

3317 In the 1850 Federal Census, Adoniram & Lucy Remington, ages 24 & 28, are living at Leicester, Addison Co., VT. they have a son "Raslin," age 3, and are living next to Adoniram's parents, David & Mary and their daughter Abbey.

In 1880 Adoniram J. Remington is age 52, living with his father and stepmother at Leicester.
Remington, Adoniram J. (I18204)

3318 In the 1850 Federal Census, Albert is age 13 and living with his parents and siblings at Smithfield, RI. In 1870 he is at Marengo, Iowa Co., IA. Albert is married to Helen, and his brother Edwin A. Remington is living with them there.

In 1900 Albert H.& Helen Remington are ages 63 and 56, living at South Bend, St. Joseph, IN. With them is niece Minna Greeley, 26.

Probably his middle name was Hazard, as was his brother who died.
Remington, Albert H. (I02237)

3319 In the 1850 Federal Census, Allen & Palmyra are living at Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY with their two children. Allen's wife and the two children listed were born in Canada, according to the census data. However, the 1860 census shows Palmyra and daughter Diadama as being born in NY. In 1850 they are next door to Jeremiah & Hannah Sheffield and family; Jeremiah -- although a couple of years older than Allen -- is his nephew. Remington, Allen II (I09615)

3320 In the 1850 Federal Census, Allen is living at Cranston with Joseph G. Johnson and his wife Mary A. (Remington) Johnson and family. It appears that they named a son after him (see 1860, 1870, & 1880 censuses).

I can't locate him in any censuses after 1850. He could be this individual in the RI Cemetery Database:
TIBBITTS ALLEN, CAPT 1822 - 3 JUN 1855 PV001
Tibbetts, Allen J. (I07136)

3321 In the 1850 Federal Census, Alpha & Julia Remington, ages 26 & 28, are living at Albany, Albany Co., NY. With them is son Charles, 2, and Mary Remington, 54 (probably Alpha's mother, although I am not sure of her age).

In 1860 Julia A. Remington, age 37, is living at Providence, RI. With her is daughter Mary A. Remington, age 6, b. NY. Alpha (aka Alfred) age 36 RI is also in Providence living separately with their three sons -- Charles E. 12 NY, Thomas P. 9 NY, and Alpha J. Jr. 5 NY; also with them is Maria Armington 40 NY seamstress.

Remington, Alpha J. (I04584)

3322 In the 1850 Federal Census, Amasa & Hannah are living with their three daughters at Cornish, Sullivan Co., NH.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Amasa appears to have been remarried, as his wife is named Clarisa. Here is the household, at Plainfield, Sullivan Co., NH: Amasa 49, Clarisa 44, Henry 23, Harriet 21, Laura 16, James 2; George Beers 19, Marthy Beers 15, & Charles Beers 10 (all born NH except Amasa born VT). This listing suggests that Amasa and Clarissa have a blended family with one child of their own and several children from their previous marriages.

In 1870 Clarissa is living with Phebe Johnson at Plainfield, with Clarissa's daughter Martha Beers also in the household. Amasa is not listed there.

I don't know for sure where Amasa is in the 1870 census. However, there is an Amitha Davis of the correct age living at Guilford, Windham Co., VT; his wife appears to be Jennie S. 36. James Davis 11 is in the home, as well as Emma S. 1 (all born VT). I don;t know if this is Amasa or not, but it could be, with his son James who appears in the previous census. (This needs more research to confirm.)

In the 1880 Federal Census, Amasa is age 70 at West Windsor, Windsor Co., VT. With him is Nancy Johnson, 60, servant & housekeeper.

His gravestone reads: Amasa Davis, son of Jonas & Asenath, died Feb. 27, 1885, 73 yrs 11 m 2 d (? - difficult to read the numbers), the twin brother of Jonathan Davis. This gravestone has been photographed by Harry Kivler.
Davis, Amasa (I10235)

3323 In the 1850 Federal Census, Amos & Clarissa B. Remmington, ages 42 & 34, are living at Jersey, Licking Co., OH. They have five children.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Amos & Clorina, ages 53 & 45, are living at Jersey, Licking Co., OH. They have eight children in the household.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Amos & Clarina are 63 & 55, living in Jersey, Licking Co., Ohio, with the following family members: Lucy 28, Mary 22, Austin 20, Howard 18, Charles 17, Lester 13, Florence 10, & Effie 6. They are near James & Betsey Remington. James & Amos are first cousins.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Amos & "Clorina" are still at Jersey, Licking County, Ohio, near Joseph Remington -- probably his brother. It says his father was born in RI and his mother in NY. Amos is 72, Clorina 64, and with them are three daughters: Lusy, Florance, & Effie. Charley Clemons, age 10, is also in the household.

Gravestone inscription:
REMINGTON, Amos, died June 6, 1881, aged 74 years -Gone to Rest-
Remington, Amos (I09450)

3324 In the 1850 Federal Census, Amos & Mahala are living at Huntington, Chittenden, VT, with their five children. They are nearby Oliver Gorton and his family, and also near Philemon Remington and family, and two Mix families.

Pat Boyden's genealogy has his date of birth as Feb 1814.
Gorton, Amos Hale (I07975)

3325 In the 1850 Federal Census, Amos & Phebe E. Remington are living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, with their two daughters Phebe E. 3 & Rebecca 4 months.

In 1860, 1870, and 1880 the family is at Diana, Lewis Co., NY. In 1870 and 1880 they are next to John & Susanna; John is Amos's presumed uncle. This needs more research ro confirm.

In the Federal Census of 1910, Amos Remington, aged 93 wd, is living at Diana, Lewis Co., NY, with Charles & Julia (Judah) R. Cole and their adopted son.

His middle initial is not given in any of the censuses, but is in the gravestone transcription.

The intersection of NY Rts. 3 & 812 in Diana, Lewis Co., NY, is called "Remington Corners."
Remington, Amos J. (I13388)

3326 In the 1850 Federal Census, Angeline Remington is age 42 and living at West Springfield, Hampden Co., MA. With her is Alamona Remington, age 10. I have made an assumption that she is Angeline's daughter. Also in the household are Francis & Lavinia Crouch, ages 20 & 21.

In 1860 Angeline Remington is age 53 and living at Enfield, Hartford Co., CT. She is next door to Henry L. Remington, so I am making an assumption that he is her son. In the household with Angeline is Lavinia or Louisa Crouch, 30 (perhaps her daughter?), and Arabella Dunn, 28.

In 1870 Angeline is 63 and still living at Enfield, Hartford Co., CT. She is with Henry L. Remington (her assumed son) and family.
Warner, Angeline C. (I08283)

3327 In the 1850 Federal Census, Asa & Jane are living at Cambridge, Washington Co., NY. They are listed as aged 24 and 23. With them is Simeon Crandall, age 48. In 1870, Asa & Jane, both aged 43, are living at Easton, Washington Co., NY, next door to John Crandall and family. Crandall, Asa (I13841)

3328 In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Elizabeth are at Greenwich, Washington Co., NY, with four of their children and Polly Remington 49, who is likely Benjamin's sister. In 1860, Elizabeth Remington, age 56, is living at Greenwich with her children William, Edward, & Morgan.

The are also listed in the 1855 NY State Census, transcibed at NYGenwen: Benjamin 49, Elisabeth 50, William 24, Joanna 21, Edward 20, Morgan 10.
Remington, Benjamin (I08980)

3329 In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Hanah are living at Suffield, CT, with their four children. Also in the household are Hannah Spencer, 78 (probably mother-in-law), and Edward Spencer, 50 (possibly brother-in-law). Remington, Benjamin III (I08099)

3330 In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Hannah are living at Warwick, Kent, RI, with children Andrew, Benjamin, Susan, Melissa, Albert, George, Charles, & Sarah.

In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is still in Warwick, and consists of: Benjamin 51, Hannah 53, Andrew J. 30, Charles 15, Sarah A. 12, Ellen 25, & Edgar 3. Also in the household is daughter "Melissa D. Payne" and her husband and children. They are living near Benjamin's uncle Jonathan Remington, b. c. 1785, and his daughter Sally b. c. 1814.

In 1870, the family -- still at Warwick -- includes: Benjamin, 61; Hannah, 63; & George, 38; next door is Albert F., 30, a peddlar; and Sarah M., 24.

In 1880, Benjamin is still at Warwick. The household includes: Benjamin Remington 78; Thomas Paine 42 (son-in-law); Malissa Paine 43 (dtr); Paine grandchildren Frank E. 13, George R. 11, & Minnie M. 8; John S. Paine 35 (son-in-law); Paine grandchildren Cora E. 9 & Charles R. 7. Next door is son Albert 40 and his wife Sarah 32.
Remington, Benjamin (I02960)

3331 In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Mary Remington are living at Middletown, Newport Co., RI. Three other individuals are in the household with them, including Tripheny Peckham, age 89, Mary's mother. Several other Peckham families are living nearby.

"Benny E." is the writer of several letters published in "Lydia's Letters." His letters show him to be a "doting uncle and loving brother," in the words of Pam (Amari) Rich.

Benjamin E. Remington is mentioned several times in the Jamestown Town Records, indexed online at the Jamestown Historical Society. One example is the following:
"Records; handwritten warrant to warn jurors issued to Walter Watson and Borden Watson for jury duty in the Court of Common Pleas to be held in Newport on May 15, 1820 as well as George Knowles and Daniel Weeden for jury duty in the District Court to be held in Newport May 9, 1820 and Benjamin E. Remington and Oliver Hopkins for jury duty in the Circuit Court to be held in Newport on June 15, 1820; issued April 1, 1820, witnessed by John Remington, Town Clerk.
Date 1820-04-01"
Remington, Benjamin Ellery (I04211)

3332 In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Phebe are living at Hudson (Ward 1), Columbia Co., NY. With them in the household are their daughters Sarah Jenkins and Phebe A. Moone, and son-in-law Lucius Moore.

They are still there in 1860, when Penelope's name is written as Penela and her birthplace is given as NY. Benj is 73, Penela is 72, and Sarah H. Remington is 42. Lucius Moore is there, but now it appears that his wife is Harriet F.; the Moores have three children.
Jenkins, Benjamin (I11829)

3333 In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin Armstrong is age 38 b RI and living at Chatham Co., GA. Sarah F. Armstrong, age 1 GA Female, is with him.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Benjamin (39 RI) & Eliza (28 SC) are living at Savannah, Chatham Co., GA. With them are: Alexander (12 6/12 GA), Leander (5 7/12 SC), and John R. (2 6/12 GA).

In the Federal Census of 1870, B. R. Armstrong is age 49 RI. He is living at Savannah, Chatham Co., GA. With him is son Leander 16 GA. They are living or staying at the Planters' Hotel. However, he appears to be listed twice, because he is also listed in Effingham Co., GA, as B. R. Armstrong 47 RI. His family is listed as follows: E. M. 40 SC, L. 15 SC, M. 9 GA, F. 6 GA, and G. 1 GA. (Is G. his grandson George? See note below from Georgia Historical Society. However, the census says George is Ben's son.)

In the Federal Census of 1880, the family is living on Gordon Street in Savannah: Benjamin (57 RI), Elizabeth (50 SC), Marion (19 GA), Leander (25 SC), Florence (16 GA), George (11 GA), & Iowa (10 GA, granddaughter).

In the Federal Census of 1900, Ben R. Armstrong is 78 RI and his wife Eliza is 75 SC. They are living at Guyton, Effingham Co., GA.

The following notes are from the Georgia Historical Society web site [http://www.georgiahistory.com/Collections/vm0025.htm]: "Benjamin Remington Armstrong, a native of Rhode Island, was a brickmason, builder, and contractor in Savannah, Georgia. Alexander Armstrong, Benjamin's son, was a machinist and the father of George F. Armstrong."
Armstrong, Benjamin Remington (I18509)

3334 In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin is age 88 and living with his son Aaron and family in Savoy, Berkshire, MA. Next door is his son James and family. (Probable) son Benjamin and his family are nearby, too.

According to Boyd Scott Remington's chart, Ben's parents lived in Cummington, MA. That is why I think his wife is Sarah Seamans, based on the marriage data. Otherwise, she married a different Benj. Remington.

The death record at Savoy, MA, says Mr. Benjamin Remington died of old age at 94y 4m 9d.
Remington, Benjamin (I07978)

3335 In the 1850 Federal Census, Betsey Remington is age 77, born in CT, and is living at Canandaigua, Ontario, NY, with John & Sophia Fosket/Foskett. Possibly Sophia is her daughter (needs more research).

The death notice said she died at age 81.
Nelson, Betsy Root or (I08527)

3336 In the 1850 Federal Census, C. H. & A. H. Remington, ages 36 RI & 24 MA, are living at Milwaukee, WI; C. H. is a machinist.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Charles H. & Abigail, both aged 38 (illegible?), he b RI and she b RI, are living at Dubuque, Dubuque Co., IA. They have two children, Elizabeth 7 WI & Charles H. 1 IA. Also in the household are: Clarissa Dean 63 MA (possibly Abigail's mother?); and Lucy Gormley 21 Ireland, a servant.
Remington, Charles H. (I21017)

3337 In the 1850 Federal Census, Caleb & Lucy are living at Sterling, Windham Co., CT. Nearby are brother Griffin and his wife Mercy. Whitford, Caleb (I19368)

3338 In the 1850 Federal Census, Caleb 37, Abby Jane 33, & Susan 1 are in Johnston, RI. Living with them is Elizabeth Hudson 52. In the 1880 Federal Census, Caleb & Abbie J. Remington are still residing in Johnston, RI. Their ages are given as 69 and 64.

He is identified as Caleb B. Remington in a division of his father's land, 12 April 1823, at Johnston, RI. Perhaps his middle name was Bussey, his maternal grandmother's maiden name.

Boyd Scott Remington's chart shows 3 wives for Caleb: Sarah Latham, Abigail Luther, and Abby Jane Unknown. However, the dates on the chart differ from these dates, which are from the RI Cemetery Database. Abby Jane is buried in the same cemetery as this Caleb. I don't know where Sarah is buried, I think Abby Jane is really Abigail Luther, as a witness on the probate records for Caleb is Addison Luther.

BSRs chart has Caleb's dates as follows: 5 Jan 1811 - 5 Apr 1890. The RI Cemetery Database has his date of death as 30 April 1889, while the RI Death Index says 5 April 1890, son of John & Sarah.
Remington, Caleb B. (I08884)

3339 In the 1850 Federal Census, Campbell is age 36 and Polly is age 42. They are living at Huntington, Chittenden, VT, with children Stephen, Emerson, Francis, Jane, & Lodeemy. In 1870 Campbell & Polly are at Calais, Washington Co., VT. A child, Willie E. Remington, age 9, is with them. Is he a son or grandson?

In 1870 they are next door to Oscar & Jane White. I am making an assumption that Jane is the former Jane Remington, daughter of Campbell & Polly (the age fits her year of birth).

Pat Boyden's genealogy has Campbell's date of birth as 3 Aug 1813. I have not verified which year is correct.
Remington, Campbell (I13228)

3340 In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles & Jane are living at Geneva, Kane Co., IL; they have 6 children. In 1860 they are at Winfield, Dupage Co., IL, with 6 children, but one of their sons has apparently died. In 1870 they are still there, with an additional young son.

In 1880 Charles is living in Turner, Dupage Co., IL, and has a wife named Sarah, so apparently Jane has died. Son Frank, 18, is in the household.
Watson, Charles (I16454)

3341 In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles & Lydia are living in North Providence, and with them are John & Susan (John's wife or sister?). In 1860 they are living in Johnston, next to William & Almy on one side, and William's son Charles & Lydia on the other side. Randall, Charles (I13298)

3342 In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles & Sophia are living with their infant daughter at Scituate, RI, in the household of Sophia's parents, Russell & Sophia Smith. Also in the home is Susan Remington, sister of Sophia Smith. Fisher, Charles H. (I12391)

3343 In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles A. Sheldon is age 35 b. RI and living in Greene Co., AL. Also in the same county is his brother George and family. The two brothers are both merchants. Sheldon, Charles A. (I16776)

3344 In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles is age 12 and living with his family in Cranston, RI. In the 1860 Federal Census, Charles is age 22, still living at home with his parents and siblings in Cranston, RI. I have not located him in the 1870 census.

I have made an assumption that this individual in the 1880 Federal Census is the son of Albert & Eliza. Charles's middle initial and date of death were obtained from the Rhode Island Death Index, which identifies Charles A. Remington as the son of Albert & Eliza, and says he he died at the age 57. The age and middle initial agree with the census data in 1880. His wife's death is also recorded on the same page in the Rhode Island Death Index.

In the 1875 Rhode Island Census, his name appears as Charles H. Remington, age 37. His wife Mary S. Remington is 32, while son Amasa E. is 7. The family is at Providence, RI.
Remington, Charles Augustus (I14672)

3345 In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles is age 24, a clerk, living with his family in Warwick, RI. There was another Charles Remington living in RI in 1850 -- a clerk, age 21, living in a hotel in Ward 5, Providence. Who is he? Could he be the same individual counted twice?

According to an 1895 article in "Club and Professional Life of Rhode Island" about Henry Adolphus Remington (Jr.), his brother Charles was living in Providence at that time. No other details are given about Charles. It does confirm that their brother William died in Atlanta, GA.
Remington, Charles (I11979)

3346 In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles, 50, & Caroline, 45, are living at Scituate, RI. With them are Sylvester, 30, & Harriet, 22, as well as Woon (?) Brown, 25, & Fenner Kent, 21.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Charles & Caroline, ages 60 & 61, are still living at Scituate, RI. Jabez Colvin, age 47, is with them.

In 1870, Charles & Caroline Stone, ages 70 & 71, are still at Scituate. With them is Jabez Colvin, 57.

I think Jabez may be first cousin to Caroline (needs more research to confirm).
Stone, Charles (I19179)

3347 In the 1850 Federal Census, Chauncey & Elizabeth are living at Canandaigua, Ontario Co., NY, with their four children. In 1865, these family members are listed: C. Remington, Elizabeth, Anna, Edmond, Hannah, & Sarah. Is "Hannah" actually "Herbert" or vice versa? Remington, Chauncey (I12859)

3348 In the 1850 Federal Census, Chauncey & Fanny are at Henrietta, Lorain Co., Ohio, with their daughter Frances.

See notes for Chauncey's father Ezekiel; in 1827 Ezekiel, Henry, Chancy, and Charles were living at Pittsfield, Lorain Co, OH.
Remington, Chauncey (I08448)

3349 In the 1850 Federal Census, Chauncey (Chaney or Chancy), age 45, and his wife Mariah, age 38, are living in Washington, Macomb Co., MI. In the household are eight children: Eliza 17, Mary 12, Cooley 11, Dennis 9, Porter 7, Joseph 5, Electa 3, and Andrew 1. Possibly another daughter, Hannah age 14, is living with the Burlingham family in town (needs more research).

In the 1860 Federal Census, Chancy & Maria Remington, ages 49 & 46, are living at Chesterfield, Macomb Co., MI. In the household are: Hannah 24, Cooley 21, Dennis 19, Potter 17, Joseph 16, Amelia 11, & Emily 8. Chancey is a carpenter & joiner; daughter Hannah is a domestic; and the three oldest sons are sailors. Amelia must have been written as Andrew in 1850 (?).

According to a descendant, Marge Graves, Chauncey died about 1867.
Remington, Chauncey (I10101)

3350 In the 1850 Federal Census, Christopher & "Areilly" (ages 37 & 30) are living in Cranston, RI, with his mother Alice, age 72. LeValley, Christopher W. (I12218)
